Background: Acral melanoma is rare and associated with a worse prognosis compared to cutaneous melanoma in other locations. Despite this, few studies have focused on the prognosis of acral melanoma, particularly in patients with initial clinical stage. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of clinical and histopathological characteristics on the disease-free survival (DFS) of stage I-II patients., Methods: We analyzed 154 stage I-II acral melanoma cases, all of whom underwent a review of the histopathological and clinical parameters. Patients were divided into groups based on the presence or absence of disease recurrence within 5 years. We used Cox proportional regression to analyze independent risk factors and computed DFS curves using the Kaplan-Meier method., Results: Within 5 years, 27.9% of patients experienced disease recurrence, with 90.4% occurring during the first 3 years. Univariate and multivariate analyses did not identify any clinical parameters with a significant influence on DFS. The DFS rate at 5 years was 72.7%. The median duration of disease recurrence after the initial diagnosis was 21 months. However, Breslow thickness, presence of ulceration, >3 mitosis/mm 2 , presence of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL), and perineural invasion were significantly associated with a decrease in time to first recurrence., Conclusions: Despite the favorable prognosis of stage I-II acral melanoma compared with advance stage, clinical and histopathological characteristics can impact prognosis. In addition to Breslow thickness and ulceration, attention should be paid to mitotic rate, presence of TIL, and perineural invasion to optimize follow-up of acral melanoma patients diagnosed in the initial clinical stage., (© 2023 the International Society of Dermatology.)

Whey protein (WP) is a dairy food supplement and, due to its effects on fat-free mass (FFM) gain and fat mass (FM) loss, it has been widely consumed by resistance training practitioners. This review analyzed the impact of WP supplementation in its concentrated (WPC), hydrolyzed (WPH) and isolated (WPI) forms, comparing it exclusively to isocaloric placebos. Random effect meta-analyses were performed from the final and initial body composition values of 246 healthy athletes undergoing 64.5 ± 15.3 days of training in eight randomized clinical trials (RCT) collected systematically from five scientific databases. The weighted mean difference (WMD) was statistically significant for FM loss (WMD = -0.96, 95% CI = -1.37, -0.55, p < 0.001) and, in the analysis of subgroups, this effect was maintained for the WPC (WMD = -0.63, 95% CI = -1.19, -0.06, p = 0.030), with protein content between 51% and 80% (WMD = -1.53; 95% CI = -2.13, -0.93, p < 0.001), and only for regular physical activity practitioners (WMD = -0.95; 95% CI = -1.70, -0.19, p = 0.014). There was no significant effect on FFM in any of the scenarios investigated ( p > 0.05). Due to several and important limitations, more detailed analyses are required regarding FFM gain.

Objective: To describe the characteristics of the malignant and pre-malignant lesions found in the minor surgical interventions performed at a health centre., Design: Retrospective, descriptive study., Participants: 682 lesions: all the lesions extirpated and referred to pathology except for epidermal and trichilemmal cysts, lipomas, molluscum, common warts, and nails., Setting: Rochapea Health Centre, Pamplona.Main measurements. We analysed the anatomical-pathological results and the distribution by sex, age-group, location, technique and edges affected in 27 dysplasias and 11 malignant lesions., Results: We found that malignant and pre-malignant lesions were more common in women, aged 15 to 44 for dysplasias and 45-64 for malignant lesions. The most common location was on the back; the most frequent technique, fusiform excision. This technique had the highest percentage of edges without lesion in dysplasias. The lesions whose edges were affected corresponded to punch and circular excision samples. None of the malignant lesions had their edges affected., Conclusions: Most malignant lesions are not suspected. They appear in samples referred with a diagnosis of benign. Employment of techniques such as fusiform excision in lesions which are potentially malign, even though in principle they seem benign, enables them to be extirpated with free edges.

Six trials were conducted at various locations to determine the response of broiler chickens to combinations of zinc bacitracin and roxarsone when fed in the presence of narasin. The addition of zinc bacitracin at 55 mg per kg significantly improved growth rate and feed utilization when data from all locations were combined. There was no effect of roxarsone fed at 50 mg per kg on BW or feed utilization, nor was there an interaction of roxarsone and zinc bacitracin on BW. There was a significant interaction of roxarsone and zinc bacitracin for feed utilization; addition of zinc bacitracin significantly improved feed utilization both in the presence and absence of roxarsone, but the improvement was greater in the absence of roxarsone.

Six trials were conducted at different locations to examine the response of broiler chickens to roxarsone and bacitracin in the form of bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD) in the presence of the anticoccidal narasin. All diets contained narasin (80 mg/kg) and were fortified with a factorial arrangement of roxarsone (0 to 50 mg/kg) and BMD (0 or 55 mg/kg). Broilers were grown to market weights with narasin and roxarsone removed from the diets for the final 5 days. Addition of both roxarsone and BMD resulted in significant (P less than .05) improvements in body weight and feed utilization. Response to roxarsone for feed utilization was influenced to some extent by the presence or absence of BMD. Although the response to roxarsone was always positive, the degree of response was lessened by the presence of BMD. This resulted in a significant (P less than .10) interaction between roxarsone and BMD for feed utilization but not for body weight.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of broiler chickens to addition of bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD) to diets containing salinomycin. In each experiment, five tests were conducted at different locations. In Experiment 1, all diets contained 66 mg salinomycin/kg of diet for the first 42 days and either 0 or 33 mg BMD/kg of diet for the entire 49-day feeding period. In Experiment 2, all diets contained 66 mg salinomycin and 50 mg roxarsone/kg of diet for the first 42 days and either 0, 11, 33, or 55 mg BMD/kg of diet for the entire 49-day feeding period. In Experiment 1, addition of 33 mg BMD/kg of diet significantly (P less than .05) improved body weights and feed utilization. Results were similar in all five tests. In Experiment 2, addition of 11, 33, or 55 mg BMD/kg of diet significantly (P less than .05) increased body weights. In one location the addition of 55 mg BMD/kg of diet resulted in no significant difference in body weight compared with those fed the unsupplemented diet, but in all other locations the response was similar. Addition of 33 or 55 mg BMD/kg of diet resulted in improved (P less than .05) feed utilization when all tests were combined. Feed utilization was not improved in all locations by the addition of BMD.

Studies were conducted at six locations over a 7-yr period to evaluate the response of broiler chickens to bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD) and roxarsone in the presence of diets containing 3 ppm halofuginone/kg feed. Treatments consisted of a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement with 0 or 55 mg BMD and 0 or 50 mg roxarsone/kg feed. These additives were fed beginning with day-old chicks and were removed 6 days before termination of the study, which varied in length from 48 to 56 days among locations. Body weights were significantly improved (P less than .05) by the addition of either BMD or roxarsone with a significant interaction (P less than .05) between BMD and roxarsone. Roxarsone improved body weights only in the presence of BMD. Feed utilization was significantly (P less than .05) improved by addition of either BMD or roxarsone, with no interaction between the two products.

Five trials were conducted at various locations to determine the response of broiler chickens to the addition of zinc bacitracin to diets containing both salinomycin and roxarsone. Results indicate that when a combination of salinomycin and roxarsone is used as an anticoccidial, the addition of zinc bacitracin at 33 or 55 mg/kg diet will improve growth rate and feed utilization by broiler chickens. Regression of body weight and feed utilization on dietary levels of zinc bacitracin indicated that each milligram of zinc bacitracin in the diet increased the 49-day weight of broiler chickens by .92 g and reduced the feed required per gram of gain by .0012 g.
