A useful tool that can achieve a high level of spin polarization is a circularly polarized far off-resonance dipole force trap (CFORT). This work is the first step in its development; building the necessary components to successfully load stable 39K into a linearly polarized far off-resonance trap (FORT) from a magneto-optical trap, where the atoms are precooled to a temperature of 400 μK. The FORT consists of 700 mW of light from a titanium–sapphire ring laser, focused with a 200 mm achromatic lens to a waist of 35 μm. The light is detuned between 1 and 20 nm to the red of the D1 transition and this gives rise to trap depths in the region of a few milliKelvin. A characterization of the FORT's loading efficiency and lifetime as a function of FORT beam detuning, power, and ellipticity are studied. Many experiments carried out at radioactive beam facilities require the production of intense, isotopically clean and isobar free beams of a particular isotope. At TRIUMF the addition of a resonant ionization laser ion source (TRILIS) enables a multitude of new beams and therefore new experiments to be carried out. 26Al was one of the first radioactive ion beams delivered to an experiment using TRILIS. The nuclear charge radius of 11Li has been determined for the first time by high-precision laser spectroscopy. On-line measurements at TRIUMF-ISAC yielded a 7Li-11Li isotope shift (IS) of 25 101.23(13) MHz for the Doppler-free [FORMULA: SEE TEXT]transition. IS accuracy for all other bound Li isotopes was also improved. Differences from calculated mass-based IS yield values for change in charge radius along the isotope chain. The charge radius decreases monotonically from 6Li to 9Li, and then increases from 2.217(35) to 2.467(37) fm for 11Li. This is compared to various models, and it is found that a combination of halo neutron correlation and intrinsic core excitation best reproduces the experimental results.
