This research was triggered by the identified need in literature for large-scale studies about the kinds of designs that teachers create for mobile learning (m-learning). These studies require analyses of large datasets of learning designs. The common approach followed by researchers when analyzing designs has been to manually classify them following high-level pedagogically guided coding strategies, which demands extensive work. Therefore, the first goal of this paper is to explore the use of supervised machine learning (SML) to automatically classify the textual content of m-learning designs using pedagogically relevant classifications, such as the cognitive level demanded by students to carry out specific designed tasks, the phases of inquiry learning represented in the designs, or the role that the situated environment has in the designs. Because not all SML models are transparent, but researchers often need to understand their behaviour, the second goal of this paper is to consider the trade-off between models' performance and interpretability in the context of design analytics for m-learning. To achieve these goals, we compiled a dataset of designs deployed using two tools, Avastusrada and Smartzoos. With this dataset, we trained and compared different models and feature extraction techniques. We further optimized and compared the best performing and most interpretable algorithms (EstBERT and Logistic Regression) to consider the second goal with an illustrative case. We found that SML can reliably classify designs with accuracy > 0.86 and Cohen's kappa > 0.69.

Data-informed decision-making in teachers' practice, now recommended by different teacher inquiry models and policy documents, implies deep practice change for many teachers. However, not much is known about how teachers perceive the different steps that analytics-informed teacher inquiry entails. This paper presents the results of a study into developing an Analytics Model for Teacher Inquiry (AMTI), which was then used to understand how teachers (N=10) construe the steps in the model and to explore the possible constraints as well as incentives for TLA-informed teacher practices (Teaching and Learning Analytics). In the final iteration experts (N=7) and teacher-researchers (N=2) tested and evaluated the developed model. Their feedback was used to improve the model and provide example cases with insights into possible scenarios for TLA-informed analyses of teaching.

Orchestrating technology-enhanced learning is a difficult task, especially in demanding pedagogical approaches like inquiry-based learning (IBL). To foster effective teacher adoption, both the complexity of designing IBL activities and the uncertainty about the student learning path during enactment need to be addressed. Previous research suggests that aligning learning design and learning analytics can be an effective way to provide such orchestration support. This paper reports on a design-based research (DBR) project to explore teachers' orchestration needs in Go-Lab (a technological ecosystem for IBL used by thousands of primary and secondary school teachers around the world), and on how solutions that align learning design and analytics can fulfill such needs. The analysis of data from multiple events (including surveys, case studies, workshops with teachers, and platform usage analyses) led to a catalogue of IBL orchestration needs that can be tackled by aligning learning design and analytics, as well as a list of guidelines for technology development aiming to support IBL orchestration. These two contributions can support the creation of future learning analytics--enhanced IBL environments that are both pedagogically grounded and usable by teachers in authentic settings.

Monitoring and guiding multiple groups of students in face-to-face collaborative work is a demanding task which could possibly be alleviated with the use of a technological assistant in the form of learning analytics. However, it is still unclear whether teachers would indeed trust, understand, and use such analytics in their classroom practice and how they would interact with such an assistant. The present research aimed to find out what the perception of in-service secondary school teachers is when provided with a dashboard based on audio and digital trace data when monitoring a collaborative learning activity. In a vignette study, we presented twenty-one in-service teachers with videos from an authentic collaborative activity, together with visualizations of simple collaboration analytics of those activities. The teachers perceived the dashboards as providers of useful information for their everyday work. In addition to assisting in monitoring collaboration, the involved teachers imagined using it for picking out students in need, getting information about the individual contribution of each collaborator, or even as a basis for assessment. Our results highlight the need for guiding dashboards as only providing new information to teachers did not compel them to intervene and additionally, a guiding dashboard could possibly help less experienced teachers with data-informed assessment.

Se presentan los resultados del análisis de isótopos estables (d 13C y d 15N sobre colágeno, d 13C sobre apatita) de 8 muestras óseas procedentes de Tierra del Fuego que, junto con 15 determinaciones previas, informan sobre la variación en la subsistencia de poblaciones de cazadores-recolectores. Se observa que los valores más "marítimos" se encuentran en el conjunto Sudeste de la Isla Grande. Por otra parte, los más "continentales" se encuentran en el conjunto Norte de la Isla Grande. Es interesante destacar que, sin cambiar la tendencia antes mencionada, los datos del d 15N están indicando una incidencia importante de las dietas marítimas en los tres conjuntos. La variación observada es mayor que la registrada previamente.

Research indicates that data-informed practice helps teachers change their teaching and promotes teacher professional development (TPD). Although educational data are often collected from digital spaces, in-action evidence from physical spaces is seldom gathered, providing an incomplete view of the classroom reality. Also, most learning analytics tools focus on learners and do not explicitly collect or analyse teaching data. To support teacher-led inquiries in TPD, the authors' Design-Based Research explores the feasibility and effects of teachers actively collecting, with the help of technology, data about their classroom practice and the possible impact of such data on their own teaching. Based on an online survey (N = 94), prior research literature and feedback from teachers (N = 11), the authors demonstrate the feasibility of such data collection and suggest design principles for classroom data-collection tools as, besides usability and ease of use, they also detected interest in customisation, triggering teacher interest and inclusion of teaching data.

Despite the ubiquity of learning in workplace and professional settings, the learning analytics (LA) community has paid significant attention to such settings only recently. This may be due to the focus on researching formal learning, as workplace learning is often informal, hard to grasp, and not unequivocally defined. This article summarizes the state of the art of workplace learning analytics (WPLA), extracted from a two-iteration systematic literature review. Our in-depth analysis of 52 existing proposals not only provides a descriptive view of the field, but also reflects on researcher conceptions of learning and their influence on the design, analytics, and technology choices made in this area. We also discuss the characteristics of workplace learning that make WPLA proposals different from LA in formal education contexts and the challenges resulting from this. We found that WPLA is gaining momentum, especially in some fields, like healthcare and education. The focus on theory is generally a positive feature in WPLA, but we encourage a stronger focus on assessing the impact of WPLA in realistic settings.

Social practices are assumed to play an important role in the evolution of new teaching and learning methods. Teachers internalize knowledge developed in their communities through interactions with peers and experts while solving problems or co-creating materials. However, these social practices and their influence on teachers' adoption of new pedagogical practices are notoriously hard to study, given their implicit and informal nature. In this paper, we apply the Knowledge Appropriation Model (KAM) to trace how different social practices relate to the implementation of pedagogical innovations in the classroom, through the analysis of more than 40,000 learning designs created within Graasp, an online authoring tool to support inquiry-based learning, used by more than 35,000 teachers. Our results show how different practices of knowledge appropriation, maturation and scaffolding seem to be related, to a varying degree, to teachers' increased classroom implementation of learning designs. Our study also provides insights into how we can use traces from digital co-creation platforms to better understand the social dimension of professional learning, knowledge creation and the adoption of new practices.

Conceptions or ideas that couples hold about sexual consent could be a key factor in their communication, mutual respect, and the prevention of sexual violence. The multifaceted nature of sexual consent makes it a complex concept. The aim of the present study was to explore individuals' ideas and understanding of sexual intercourse in two distinct contexts: consensual and non-consensual. We used a qualitative approach, adopting the methodology of thematic analysis. In total, 113 surveys obtained from the general population (76.1% women and 23.9% men aged 18 to 59 years) were studied. Two open-ended questions were asked about the general topic of sexual consent, where we distinguished sexual activity in which there is sexual consent vs. no consent. The phases of the thematic analysis approach were applied. For the consensual context, the following themes emerged: mutual reciprocity and respect; open, clear communication and agreements; and awareness and emotional well-being. For the non-consensual context, the following themes emerged: violence and sexual assault, absence and ambiguity of sexual consent, and lack of communication. All of these aspects should be considered in couples' communication and sexual education to facilitate and improve sexual relationships and, in turn, prevent violence and sexual aggression. In the Reserva Ecológica del Pedregal of San Ángel, located in the south of Mexico City, Mexico, free-roaming dogs and cats coexist with 148 bird, 33 of mammal, 23 of reptile and seven amphibian species, that represent a remnant of the original fauna of the Mexican Plateau. The negative impact that dogs and cats have on local fauna is unobjectionable, however, the role that these introduced vertebrates play as potential transmitters of infectious diseases for native fauna and humans, is much less understood. Information about parasitic infections in native and introduced animals in this location is scarce. In order to ameliorate this lack of information, the objective of this study is to characterize the helminth fauna of the free-ranging dogs and cats of the ecological reserve. Between 2018 and 2023, 36 Felis silvestris catus and 7 Canis lupus familiaris were studied from the helminthological perspective. Endoparasites were obtained from the digestive tract and were identified to the species level using morphological and molecular evidence. Hosts were parasitized by eight species of helminths: in cats the cestodes Hydatigera taeniaeformis, Mesocestoides sp., Taenia rileyi and the nematode Toxocara cati were recorded, while in dogs, the cestode Taenia pisiformis and the nematodes Ancylostoma caninum, and Uncinaria stenocephala were found. The only species shared between cats and dogs was the cestode Dipylidium caninum. These free-ranging animals act as definitive hosts of 5 species known to have zoonotic potential; their presence in the area may generate a public and animal health problem if programs of dog and cat population control are not continued. Mobile and Ubiquitous Learning (m/u-learning) are finding an increasing adoption in education. They are often distinguished by hybrid learning environments that encompass elements of formal and informal learning, in activities that happen in distributed settings (indoors and outdoors), across physical and virtual spaces. Despite their purported benefits, these environments imply additional complexity in the design, monitoring and evaluation of learning activities. The research literature on learning design (LD) and learning analytics (LA) has started to deal with these issues. This paper presents a systematic literature review of LD and LA, in m/u-learning. Apart from providing an overview of the current research in the field, this review elicits elements of common ground between both communities, as shown by the similar learning contexts and complementary research contributions, and based on the research gaps, proposes to: address m/u-learning beyond higher education settings, reinforce the connection between physical and virtual learning spaces, and more systematically align LD and LA processes.

Improving educational practice through reflection is one important focus of teacher professional development approaches. However, such teacher reflection operates under practical classroom constraints that make it happen infrequently, including the reliance on disruptive peer/supervisor observations or recordings. This article describes three design-based research iterations towards technological support for teacher reflection based on everyday evidence and feedback. The authors collaborated with 16 teachers from two different secondary schools, using a variety of prototype technologies (from paper prototypes to web applications and wearable sensors). The iterative evaluation of such prototypes led them from a high-tech focused approach to a more nuanced socio-technical one, based on lightweight technologies and 'envelope routines' that also involve students. After illustrating the potential of this approach to change teacher practice and students' learning experience, the authors also present a series of guidelines for the design of technology that supports such reflection based on everyday evidence gathering.

With the wide availability of mobile devices and the growing interest in social media, numerous applications have emerged to support student engagement in the classroom. There is conflicting evidence, however, on whether the engagement benefits of such applications outweigh their potential cost as a source of disaffection. To investigate these issues, this article presents a case study on the usage of a social media app (SpeakUp) during a semester-long face-to-face university course, and its relations with the context and the learning outcomes. In this mixed-methods study, we gathered data from multiple sources (video recordings of the lessons, SpeakUp logs and messages, student questionnaires, and course assessments) in order to extract self-reported and observable behavioral and emotional indicators. Our findings reveal that simple measures of behavioral engagement were insufficient to predict academic performance. Nevertheless, our models significantly improved using relatively simple and unobtrusive indicators of both behavioral and emotional engagement and disaffection. This article also indicates that the mere introduction of social media in educational settings does not guarantee a positive impact on learning. To promote an effective use of social media in the classroom (raising engagement while avoiding disaffection), teachers need to design the learning activities aligning the use of social media with the learning goals.
