We investigate the power of weak measurements in the framework of quantum state discrimination. First, we define and analyze the notion of weak consecutive measurements. Our main result is a convergence theorem whereby we demonstrate when and how a set of consecutive weak measurements converges to a strong measurement. Second, we show that for a small set of consecutive weak measurements, long before their convergence, one can separate close states without causing their collapse. We thus demonstrate a tradeoff between the success probability and the bias of the original vector towards collapse. Next we use post-selection within the Two-State-Vector Formalism and present the non-linear expansion of the expectation value of the measurement device's pointer to distinguish between two predetermined close vectors., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures. It has been suggested that microtubules and other cytoskeletal filaments may act as electrical transmission lines. An electrical circuit model of the microtubule is constructed incorporating features of its cylindrical structure with nanopores in its walls. This model is used to study how ionic conductance along the lumen is affected by flux through the nanopores when an external potential is applied across its two ends. Based on the results of Brownian dynamics simulations, the nanopores were found to have asymmetric inner and outer conductances, manifested as nonlinear IV curves. Our simulations indicate that a combination of this asymmetry and an internal voltage source arising from the motion of the C-terminal tails causes a net current to be pumped across the microtubule wall and propagate down the microtubule through the lumen. This effect is demonstrated to enhance and add directly to the longitudinal current through the lumen resulting from an external voltage source, and could be significant in amplifying low-intensity endogenous currents within the cellular environment or as a nano-bioelectronic device., Comment: 43 pages, 6 figures, revised version

Microtubules (MTs) are important cytoskeletal structures, engaged in a number of specific cellular activities, including vesicular traffic, cell cyto-architecture and motility, cell division, and information processing within neuronal processes. MTs have also been implicated in higher neuronal functions, including memory, and the emergence of "consciousness". How MTs handle and process electrical information, however, is heretofore unknown. Here we show new electrodynamic properties of MTs. Isolated, taxol-stabilized microtubules behave as bio-molecular transistors capable of amplifying electrical information. Electrical amplification by MTs can lead to the enhancement of dynamic information, and processivity in neurons can be conceptualized as an "ionic-based" transistor, which may impact among other known functions, neuronal computational capabilities., Comment: This is the final submitted version. The properties of the mean first passage time in a system characterized by multiple periodic attractors are studied. Using a transformation from a high dimensional space to 1D, the problem is reduced to a stochastic process along the path from the fixed point attractor to a saddle point located between two neighboring attractors. It is found that the time to switch between attractors depends on the effective size of the attractors, $\tau$, the noise, $\epsilon$, and the potential difference between the attractor and an adjacent saddle point as: $~T = {c \over \tau} \exp({\tau \over \epsilon} \Delta {\cal{U}})~$; the ratio between the sizes of the two attractors affects $\Delta {\cal{U}}$. The result is obtained analytically for small $\tau$ and confirmed by numerical simulations. We model the dynamical states of the C-termini of tubulin dimers that comprise neuronal microtubules. We use molecular dynamics and other computational tools to explore the time-dependent behavior of conformational states of a C-terminus of tubulin within a microtubule and assume that each C-terminus interacts via screened Coulomb forces with the surface of a tubulin dimer, with neighboring C-termini and also with any adjacent microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2). Each C-terminus can either bind to the tubulin surface via one of several positively charged regions or can be allowed to explore the space available in the solution surrounding the dimer. We find that the preferential orientation of each C-terminus is away from the tubulin surface but binding to the surface may also take place, albeit at a lower probability. The results of our model suggest that perturbations generated by the C-termini interactions with counter-ions surrounding a MAP2 may propagate over distances greater than those between adjacent microtubules. Thus, the MAP2 structure is able to act as a kind of biological wire (or a cable) transmitting local electrostatic perturbations resulting in ionic concentration gradients from one microtubule to another.
