In a binary mixture, stripes refer to a one-dimensional periodicity of the composition, namely, a regular alternation of layers filled with particles of mostly one species. We have recently introduced [Munaò et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 25, 16227 (2023)] a model that possibly provides the simplest binary mixture endowed with stripe order. The model consists of two species of identical hard spheres with equal concentration, which mutually interact through a square-well potential. In that paper, we have numerically shown that stripes are present in both liquid and solid phases when the attraction range is rather long. Here, we study the phase behavior of the model in terms of a density functional theory capable to account for the existence of stripes in the dense mixture. Our theory is accurate in reproducing the phases of the model, at least insofar as the composition inhomogeneities occur on length scales quite larger than the particle size. Then, using Monte Carlo simulations, we prove the existence of solid stripes even when the square well is much thinner than the particle diameter, making our model more similar to a real colloidal mixture. Finally, when the width of the attractive well is equal to the particle diameter, we observe a different and more complex form of compositional order in the solid, where each species of particle forms a regular porous matrix holding in its holes the other species, witnessing a surprising variety of emergent behaviors for a very basic model of interaction. The emergence of supramolecular aggregates from simple microscopic interaction rules is a fascinating feature of complex fluids which, besides its fundamental interest, has potential applications in many areas, from biological self-assembly to smart material design. We here investigate by Monte Carlo simulation the equilibrium structure of a two-dimensional mixture of asymmetric dimers and spheres (disks). Dimers and disks are hard particles, with an additional short-range attraction between a disk and the smaller monomer of a dimer. The model parameters and thermodynamic conditions probed are typical of colloidal fluid mixtures. In spite of the minimalistic character of the interaction, we observe--upon varying the relative concentration and size of the two colloidal species--a rich inventory of mesoscale structures at low temperature, such as clusters, lamellæ (i.e., polymer-like chains), and gel-like networks. For colloidal species of similar size and near equimolar concentrations, a dilute fluid of clusters gives way to floating lamellæ upon cooling; at higher densities, the lamellæ percolate through the simulation box, giving rise to an extended network. A crystal-vapour phase-separation may occur for a mixture of dimers and much larger disks. Finally, when the fluid is brought in contact with a planar wall, further structures are obtained at the interface, from layers to branched patterns, depending on the nature of wall-particle interactions. We reconsider model II of Orban et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 1968, 49, 1778–1783), a two-dimensional lattice-gas system featuring a crystalline phase and two distinct fluid phases (liquid and vapor). In this system, a particle prevents other particles from occupying sites up to third neighbors on the square lattice, while attracting (with decreasing strength) particles sitting at fourth- or fifth-neighbor sites. To make the model more realistic, we assume a finite repulsion at third-neighbor distance, with the result that a second crystalline phase appears at higher pressures. However, the similarity with real-world substances is only partial: Upon closer inspection, the alleged liquid–vapor transition turns out to be a continuous (albeit sharp) crossover, even near the putative triple point. We investigate the structure of a dilute mixture of amphiphilic dimers and spherical particles, a model relevant to the problem of encapsulating globular "guest" molecules in a dispersion. Dimers and spheres are taken to be hard particles, with an additional attraction between spheres and the smaller monomers in a dimer. Using the Monte Carlo simulation, we document the low-temperature formation of aggregates of guests (clusters) held together by dimers, whose typical size and shape depend on the guest concentration X. For low X (less than 10%), most guests are isolated and coated with a layer of dimers. As X progressively increases, clusters grow in size becoming more and more elongated and polydisperse; after reaching a shallow maximum for X ≈50%, the size of clusters again reduces upon increasing X further. In one case only ( X = 50%and moderately low temperature) the mixture relaxed to a fluid of lamellae, suggesting that in this case clusters are metastable with respect to crystal-vapor separation. On heating, clusters shrink until eventually the system becomes homogeneous on all scales. On the other hand, as the mixture is made denser and denser at low temperature, clusters get increasingly larger until a percolating network is formed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two-dimensional crystals of classical particles are very peculiar in that melting may occur in two steps, in a continuous fashion, via an intermediate hexatic fluid phase exhibiting quasi-long-range orientational order. On the other hand, three-dimensional spheres repelling each other through a fastdecaying bounded potential of generalized-exponential shape (GEM4 potential) can undergo freezing into cluster crystals, allowing for more that one particle per lattice site. We hereby study the combined effect of low spatial dimensionality and extreme potential softness, by investigating the phase behavior of the two-dimensional (2D) GEM4 system. Using a combination of density-functional theory and numerical free-energy calculations, we show that the 2D GEM4 system displays one ordinary and several cluster triangular-crystal phases, and that only the ordinary crystal first melts into a hexatic phase. Upon heating, the difference between the various cluster crystals fades away, eventually leaving a single undifferentiated cluster phase with a pressure-modulated site occupancy. In standard nucleation theory, the nucleation process is characterized by computing ΔΩ(V ), the reversible work required to form a cluster of volume V of the stable phase inside the metastable mother phase. However, other quantities besides the volume could play a role in the free energy of cluster formation, and this will in turn affect the nucleation barrier and the shape of the nucleus. Here we exploit our recently introduced mesoscopic theory of nucleation to compute the free energy cost of a nearly spherical cluster of volume V and a fluctuating surface area A, whereby the maximum of ΔΩ(V ) is replaced by a saddle point in ΔΩ(V,A). Compared to the simpler theory based on volume only, the barrier height of ΔΩ(V,A) at the transition state is systematically larger by a few kBT. More importantly, we show that, depending on the physical situation, the most probable shape of the nucleus may be highly non-spherical, even when the surface tension and stiffness of the model are isotropic. Interestingly, these shape fluctuations do not influence or modify the standard Classical Nucleation Theory manner of extracting the interface tension from the logarithm of the nucleation rate near coexistence. Isotropic pair potentials that are bounded at the origin have been proposed from time to time as models of the effective interaction between macromolecules of interest in the chemical physics of soft matter. We present a thorough study of the phase behavior of point particles interacting through a potential which combines a bounded short-range repulsion with a much weaker attraction at moderate distances, both of Gaussian shape. Notwithstanding the fact that the attraction acts as a small perturbation of the Gaussian-core model potential, the phase diagram of the double-Gaussian model (DGM) is far richer, showing two fluid phases and four distinct solid phases in the case that we have studied. Using free-energy calculations, the various regions of confluence of three distinct phases in the DGM system have all been characterized in detail. We focus on the Gibbs free energy ΔG for nucleating a droplet of the stable phase (e.g., solid) inside the metastable parent phase (e.g., liquid), close to the first-order transition temperature. This quantity is central to the theory of homogeneous nucleation, since it superintends the nucleation rate. We recently introduced a field theory describing the dependence of ΔG on the droplet volume V, taking into account besides the microscopic fuzziness of the droplet-parent interface, also small fluctuations around the spherical shape whose effect, assuming isotropy, was found to be a characteristic logarithmic term. Here we extend this theory, introducing the effect of anisotropy in the surface tension, and show that in the limit of strong anisotropy ΔG(V) once more develops a term logarithmic on V, now with a prefactor of opposite sign with respect to the isotropic case. Based on this result, we argue that the geometrical shape that large solid nuclei mostly prefer could be inferred from the prefactor of the logarithmic term in the droplet free energy, as determined from the optimization of its near-coexistence profile. We study a two-dimensional fluid of particles interacting through a spherically symmetric and marginally soft two-body repulsion. This model can exist in three different crystal phases, one of them with square symmetry and the other two triangular. We show that, while the triangular solids first melt into a hexatic fluid, the square solid is directly transformed on heating into an isotropic fluid through a first-order transition, with no intermediate tetratic phase. In the low-pressure triangular and square crystals, melting is reentrant provided the temperature is not too low, but without the necessity of two competing nearest-neighbor distances over a range of pressures. We present evidence that the concurrent existence of two populations of particles with different effective diameters is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of anomalous phase behaviors in systems of particles interacting through spherically symmetric unbounded potentials. Our results show that an extremely weak softening of the interparticle repulsion, which yields a single nearest-neighbor separation, is able to originate a wide spectrum of unconventional features including reentrant melting, solid polymorphism, as well as thermodynamic, dynamic, and structural anomalies. The metadynamics method, recently proposed by Laio and Parrinello as a general tool to map multidimensional free-energy landscapes [A. Laio and M. Parrinello, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. The authors study a simple model of a nematic liquid crystal made of parallel ellipsoidal particles interacting via a repulsive Gaussian law. After identifying the relevant solid phases of the system through a careful zero-temperature scrutiny of as many as eleven candidate crystal structures, they determine the melting temperature for various pressure values, also with the help of exact free energy calculations. We test the validity of some widely used phenomenological criteria for the localization of the fluid-solid transition thresholds against the phase diagrams of particles interacting through the exp-6, inverse-power-law, and Gaussian potentials. We find that one-phase rules give, on the whole, reliable estimates of freezing/melting points. The agreement is ordinarily better for a face-centered-cubic solid than for a body-centered-cubic crystal, even more so in the presence of a pressure-driven reentrant transition of the solid into a denser fluid phase, as found in the Gaussian-core model. We redraw, using state-of-the-art methods for free-energy calculations, the phase diagrams of two reference models for the liquid state: the Gaussian and inverse-power-law repulsive potentials. Notwithstanding the different behaviors of the two potentials for vanishing interparticle distances, their thermodynamic properties are similar in a range of densities and temperatures, being ruled by the competition between the body-centered-cubic (bcc) and face-centered-cubic (fcc) crystalline structures and the fluid phase. We confirm the existence of a reentrant bcc phase in the phase diagram of the Gaussian-core model, just above the triple point. We also trace the bcc-fcc coexistence line of the inverse-power-law model as a function of the power exponent n and relate the common features in the phase diagrams of such systems to the softness degree of the interaction. We present the first systematic application of the integral equation implementation of the replica method to the study of arrested states in fluids with microscopic competing interactions (short-range attractive and long-range repulsive, SALR), as exemplified by the prototype Lennard-Jones–Yukawa model. Using a wide set of potential parameters, we provide as many as 11 different phase diagrams on the density (ρ)–temperature (T) plane, embodying both the cluster-phase boundary, TC(ρ), and the locus below which arrest takes place, TD(ρ). We describe how the interplay between TC and TD—with the former falling on top of the other, or the other way around, depending on thermodynamic conditions and potential parameters—gives rise to a rich variety of non-ergodic states interspersed with ergodic ones, of which both the building blocks are clusters or single particles. In a few cases, we find that the TD locus does not extend all over the density range subtended by the TC envelope; under these conditions, the λ-line is within reach of the cluster fluid, with the ensuing possibility to develop ordered microphases. Whenever a comparison is possible, our predictions favorably agree with previous numerical results. Thereby, we demonstrate the reliability and effectiveness of our scheme to provide a unified theoretical framework for the study of arrested states in SALR fluids, irrespective of their nature. The effective repulsion between macromolecules such as polymer chains or dendrimers is everywhere finite, implying that interaction centers can even coincide. If, in addition, the large-distance attraction is sufficiently strong, then the system is driven unstable. An unstable system lacks a conventional thermodynamics since, in the infinite-size limit, it eventually collapses to a finite-size cluster (for instance, a polymer dispersion undergoes irreversible coagulation when increasing the amount of dissolved salt beyond a certain limit). Using a double-Gaussian (DG) potential for demonstration, we study the phase behavior of a system of ultrasoft particles as a function of the attraction strength η . Above a critical threshold η c , the DG system is unstable but its collective behavior is far from trivial since two separate regions of the thermodynamic plane can be identified, based on the value taken by the average waiting time for collapse: this is finite and small on one side of the boundary, while presumably infinite in the other region. In order to make sense of this evidence, we consider a stable system of particles interacting through a DG potential augmented with a hard core (stabilized DG, or SDG potential). We provide arguments supporting the view that the boundary line of the unstable DG model is the remnant of the spinodal line of a fluid–fluid phase transition occurring in the SDG model when the hard-core diameter is sent to zero. The phase behavior of stabilized dispersions of macromolecules is most easily described in terms of the effective interaction between the centers of mass of solute particles. For molecules such as polymer chains, dendrimers, etc., the effective pair potential is finite at the origin, allowing "particles" to freely interpenetrate each other. Using a double-Gaussian model (DGM) for demonstration, we study the behavior of the system as a function of the attraction strength η Above a critical strength η the infinite-size system is Ruelle unstable, in that it collapses to a cluster of finite volume. As ηc, is approached from below, the liquid-vapor region exhibits an anomalous widening at low temperature, and the liquid density apparently diverges at the stability threshold. Above ηc, the thermodynamic plane is divided in two regions, differing in the value of the average waiting time for collapse, being finite and small on one side of the boundary line, while large or even infinite in the other region. Upon adding a small hard core to the DGM potential, stability is fully recovered and the boundary line is converted to the spinodal line of a transition between fluid phases. We argue that the destabilization of a colloidal dispersion, as induced by the addition of salt or other fiocculant, finds a suggestive analogy in the process by which a strengthening of the attraction pushes a stabilized-DGM system inside the fluid-fluid spinodal region. Phase transitions in one-dimensional classical fluids are usually ruled out by using van Hove's theorem, A way to circumvent the conclusions of the theorem is to consider an interparticle potential that is everywhere bounded. Such is the case of, e.g., the generalized exponential model of index 4 (GEM-4 potential), which in three dimensions gives a reasonable description of the effective repulsion between flexible dendrimers in a solution. An extensive Monte Carlo simulation of the one-dimensional GEM-4 model [S. Prestipino, Phys. Rev. E 90, 042306 (2014)] has recently provided evidence of an infinite sequence of low-temperature cluster phases, however, also suggesting that upon pushing the simulation forward what seemed a true transition may eventually prove to be only a sharp crossover. We hereby investigate this problem theoretically by use of three different and increasingly sophisticated approaches (i.e., a mean-field theory, the transfer matrix of a lattice model of clusters, and the exact treatment of a system of point clusters in the continuum) to conclude that the alleged transitions of the one-dimensional GEM-4 system are likely just crossovers. Crystallization from a supercooled liquid initially proceeds via the formation of a small solid embryo (nucleus), which requires surmounting an activation barrier. This phenomenon is most easily studied by numerical simulation, using specialized biased-sampling techniques to overcome the limitations imposed by the rarity of nucleation events. Here, I focus on the barrier to homogeneous ice nucleation in supercooled water, as represented by the monatomic-water model, which in the bulk exhibits a complex interplay between different ice structures. I consider various protocols to identify solidlike particles on a computer, which perform well enough for the Lennard-Jones model, and compare their respective impact on the shape and height of the nucleation barrier. It turns out that the effect is stronger on the nucleus size than on the barrier height. As a by-product of the analysis, I determine the structure of the nucleation cluster, finding that the relative amount of ice phases in the cluster heavily depends on the method used for classifying solidlike particles. Moreover, the phase which is most favored during the earlier stages of crystallization may happen, depending on the nucleation coordinate adopted, to be different from the stable polymorph. Therefore, the quality of a reaction coordinate cannot be assessed simply on the basis of the barrier height obtained. I explain how this outcome is possible and why it just points out the shortcoming of collective variables appropriate to simple fluids in providing a robust method of particle classification for monatomic water. The return of a supercooled liquidto equilibrium usually beginswith a fast heating up of the sample which ends when the system reachesthe equilibrium freezing temperature. At this stage, the system isstill a microsegregated mixture of solid and liquid. Only later issolidification completed through the exchange of energy with the surroundings.Using the IAPWS-95 formulation, we investigate the adiabatic freezingof supercooled water in a closed and rigid vessel, i.e., under thermallyand mechanically isolated conditions, which captures the initial stageof the decay of metastable water to equilibrium. To improve realismfurther, we also account for a fixed amount of foreign gas in thevessel. Under the simplifying assumption that the system is at equilibriumimmediately after the nominal freezing temperature has been attained,we determineas a function of undercooling and gas mole numberthefinal temperature and pressure of the system, the fraction of iceat equilibrium, and the entropy increase. Assuming a nonzero energycost for the ice–water interface, we also show that, unlesssufficiently undercooled, perfectly isolated pure-water droplets cannotstart freezing in the bulk. We reconsider the applicability of classical nucleation theory (CNT) to the calculation of the free energy of solid cluster formation in a liquid and its use to the evaluation of interface free energies from nucleation barriers. Using two different freezing transitions (hard spheres and NaCl) as test cases, we first observe that the interface-free-energy estimates based on CNT are generally in error. As successive refinements of nucleation-barrier theory, we consider corrections due to a nonsharp solid-liquid interface and to a nonspherical cluster shape. Extensive calculations for the Ising model show that corrections due to a nonsharp and thermally fluctuating interface account for the barrier shape with excellent accuracy. The experimental solid nucleation rates that are measured in colloids are better accounted for by these non-CNT terms, whose effect appears to be crucial in the interpretation of data and in the extraction of the interface tension from them. We investigated the equilibrium properties of a one-dimensional system of classical particles which interact in pairs through a bounded repulsive potential with a Gaussian shape. Notwithstanding the absence of a proper fluid–solid phase transition, we found that the system exhibits a complex behaviour, with ‘anomalies’ in the density and in the thermodynamic response functions which closely recall those observed in bulk and confined liquid water. We also discuss the emergence in the cold fluid under compression of an unusual structural regime, characterized by density correlations reminiscent of the ordered arrangements found in clustered crystals. We numerically investigate a system of particles interacting through a repulsive pair potential of inverse-power form, modified in such a way that the strength of the repulsion is softened in a range of distances. The solid phases of the system for various levels of softness are identified by computing the zero-temperature phase diagram; then, for each solid phase, the melting line is determined by Monte Carlo simulation. Upon increasing the softness of the potential core, a region appears where melting occurs upon compression at constant temperature (‘anomalous’ melting) and a number of low-coordinated crystals become stable at moderate pressures. Next, the structural properties of the system for varying core softness are surveyed in the hypernetted-chain approximation, whose accuracy has been positively tested against numerical simulation. For sufficiently high degrees of softness, the radial distribution function shows the typical interplay between two distinct length-scales. In a narrow range of moderate softness, reentrant melting occurs instead with just one length-scale, which shows that the existence of two well-definite length-scales is not the only mechanism for anomalous melting. I present a generalization of the Ehrenfest urn model that is aimed at simulating the approach to equilibrium in a dilute gas. The present model differs from the original one in two respects: (1) the two boxes have different volumes and are divided into identical cells with either multiple or single occupancy; (2) particles, which carry also a velocity vector, are subjected to random, but elastic, collisions, both mutual and against the container walls. I show, both analytically and numerically, that the number and energy of particles in a given urn evolve eventually to an equilibrium probability density W which, depending on cell occupancy, is binomial or hypergeometric in the particle number and beta-like in the energy. Moreover, the Boltzmann entropy ln W takes precisely the same form as the thermodynamic entropy of an ideal gas. This exercise can be useful for pedagogical purposes in that it provides, although in an extremely simplified case, a probabilistic justification for the maximum-entropy principle. We revisit the concavity property of the thermodynamic entropy in order to formulate a general proof of the minimum energy principle as well as of other equivalent extremum principles that are valid for thermodynamic potentials and corresponding Massieu functions under different constraints. The current derivation aims at providing a coherent formal framework for such principles which may be also pedagogically useful as it fully exploits and highlights the equivalence between different schemes. Thermal anisotropic roughening of vicinal surfaces is well known and well studied. Here, we consider the possibility that a separate pre-roughening transition might take place, prior to roughening. Within the framework of a terrace-step-kink model, we identify possible interaction mechanisms for promoting pre-roughening (PR) and the ensuing disordered flat (DOF) phase. In particular, the most likely to occur in real systems is a short-range repulsion between equally oriented parallel kinks. When this interaction is strong, PR shows up and the DOF phase is characterized by antiparallel order of kinks within a step. Next, we discuss the relevance of this scenario for real vicinals, in particular Ag(115), where high-accuracy scanning tunnelling microscopy data are available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A well-established approach to the entropy of a simple fluid is the so-called multiparticle correlation expansion (MPCE), expressing the statistical entropy as a sum of contributions from increasingly large numbers of particles. It was under the pressure of accurately locating the solid-liquid transition in simple-fluid models that "exact" free-energy methods were initially developed [[1]]. Turning to theory, while the exact determination of the partition function for a non-trivial system with solid, liquid, and vapor phases will probably never be accomplished, there are nevertheless variational treatments of the solid-liquid transition (density functional theories) that have by now reached a high degree of sophistication (see, e.g., Refs. We study self-assembly on a spherical surface of a model for a binary mixture of amphiphilic dimers in the presence of guest particles via Monte Carlo (MC) computer simulation. All particles had a hard core, but one monomer of the dimer also interacted with the guest particle by means of a short-range attractive potential. We observed the formation of aggregates of various shapes as a function of the composition of the mixture and of the size of guest particles. Our MC simulations are a further step towards a microscopic understanding of experiments on colloidal aggregation over curved surfaces, such as oil droplets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here, the zero-temperature phase behavior of bosonic particles living on the nodes of a regular spherical mesh ("Platonic mesh") and interacting through an extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian has been studied. Only the hard-core version of the model for two instances of Platonic mesh is considered here. Using the mean-field decoupling approximation, it is shown that the system may exist in various ground states, which can be regarded as analogs of gas, solid, supersolid, and superfluid. For one mesh, by comparing the theoretical results with the outcome of numerical diagonalization, I manage to uncover the signatures of diagonal and off-diagonal spatial orders in a finite quantum system. As first shown by H. S. Green in 1952, the entropy of a classical fluid of identical particles can be written as a sum of many-particle contributions, each of them being a distinctive functional of all spatial distribution functions up to a given order. By revisiting the combinatorial derivation of the entropy formula, we argue that a similar correlation expansion holds for the entropy of a crystalline system. We discuss how one- and two-body entropies scale with the size of the crystal, and provide fresh numerical data to check the expectation, grounded in theoretical arguments, that both entropies are extensive quantities. I employ the van der Waals theory of Baus and co-workers to analyze the fast, adiabatic decay of a supercooled liquid in a closed vessel with which the solidification process usually starts. By imposing a further constraint on either the system volume or pressure, I use the maximum-entropy method to quantify the fraction of liquid that is transformed into solid as a function of undercooling and of the amount of a foreign gas that could possibly be also present in the test tube. Upon looking at the implications of thermal and mechanical insulation for the energy cost of forming a solid droplet within the liquid, I identify one situation where the onset of solidification inevitably occurs near the wall in contact with the bath. We study a pure fluid of heteronuclear sticky Janus dumbbells, considered to be the result of complete chemical association between unlike species in an initially equimolar mixture of hard spheres (species A) and sticky hard spheres (species B) with different diameters. The B spheres are particles whose attractive surface layer is infinitely thin. Wertheim's two-density integral equations are employed to describe the mixture of AB dumbbells together with unbound A and B monomers. After Baxter factorization, these equations are solved analytically within the associative Percus-Yevick approximation. The limit of complete association is taken at the end. The present paper extends to the more general, heteronuclear case of A and B species with size asymmetry a previous study by Wu and Chiew [J. Chem. Phys. 115, 6641 (2001)], which was restricted to dumbbells with equal monomer diameters. Furthermore, the solution for the Baxter factor correlation functions qijαβ(r) is determined here in a fully analytic way, since we have been able to find explicit analytic expressions for all the intervening parameters. We show that a system of particles interacting through the exp-6 pair potential, commonly used to describe effective interatomic forces under high compression, exhibits anomalous melting features such as reentrant melting and a rich solid polymorphism, including a stable BC8 crystal. We relate this behavior to the crossover, with increasing pressure, between two different regimes of local order that are associated with the two repulsive length scales of the potential. Our results provide a unifying picture for the high-pressure melting anomalies observed in many elements and point out that, under extreme conditions, atomic systems may reveal surprising similarities with soft matter. Phase transitions are uncommon among homogeneous one-dimensional fluids of classical particles owing to a general nonexistence result due to van Hove. A way to circumvent van Hove's theorem is to consider an interparticle potential that is finite everywhere. Of this type is the generalized exponential model of index 4 (GEM4 potential), a model interaction which in three dimensions provides an accurate description of the effective pair repulsion between dissolved soft macromolecules (e.g., flexible dendrimers). Using specialized free-energy methods, I reconstruct the equilibrium phase diagram of the one-dimensional GEM4 system, showing that, apart from the usual fluid phase at low densities, it consists of an endless sequence of cluster fluid phases of increasing pressure, having a sharp crystal appearance for low temperatures. The coexistence line between successive phases in the sequence invariably terminates at a critical point. Focussing on the first of such transitions, I show that the growth of the two-cluster phase from the metastable ordinary fluid is extremely slow, even for large supersaturations. Finally, I clarify the apparent paradox of the observation of an activation barrier to nucleation in a system where, due to the dimensionality of the hosting space, the critical radius is expected to vanish. We investigate by Monte Carlo simulation the structure and self-assembly of a mixture formed by asymmetric dimers and larger spherical particles. In our model, dimers and spheres interact through a monomer-specific short-range attraction, in addition to hard-core repulsion. The interaction parameters are chosen so as to mimic features of real colloidal mixtures. We find that the dilute mixture at low temperature is characterized by the onset of aggregates of spheres held together by dimers. In particular, when the sphere concentration is sufficiently high, the system stays homogeneous; at intermediate concentrations, very small clusters of spheres coexist with a few lamellar aggregates; finally, for even lower concentrations a single droplet eventually forms. Upon increasing the density, a sponge-like structure emerges for not too high concentrations. If the attraction between dimers and spheres is switched off, leaving only depletion forces to act, neither phase separation nor demixing are found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study, by using liquid-state theories and Monte Carlo simulation, the behavior of systems of classical particles interacting through a finite pair repulsion supplemented with a longer range attraction. Any such potential can be driven Ruelle-unstable by increasing the attraction at the expense of repulsion, until the thermodynamic limit is lost. By examining several potential forms, we find that all systems exhibit a qualitatively similar behavior in the fluid phase as the threshold of thermodynamic stability is approached (and possibly surpassed). The general feature underlying the approach to Ruelle instability is a pronounced widening of the liquid-vapor binodal (and spinodal) line at low temperatures, to such an extent that at the stability threshold a vanishing-density vapor would coexist with a diverging-density liquid. We investigate the phase behaviour of a system of particles interacting through the exp-6 pair potential, an interaction model that is appropriate to describe effective interatomic forces under high compression. The soft-repulsive component of the potential is being varied so as to study the effect on re-entrant melting and density anomaly. Upon increasing the repulsion softness, we find that the anomalous melting features persist and occur at lower pressures. Moreover, if we reduce the range of downward concavity in the potential by extending the hard core at the expenses of the soft-repulsive shoulder, the re-entrant part of the melting line reduces in extent so as it does the region of density anomaly. Specialized Monte Carlo methods are nowadays routinely employed, in combination with thermodynamic integration (TI), to locate phase boundaries of classical many-particle systems. This is especially useful for the fluid-solid transition, where a critical point does not exist and both phases may notoriously go deeply metastable. Using the Lennard-Jones model for demonstration, we hereby investigate on the alternate possibility of tracing reasonably accurate transition lines directly by integrating the pressure equation of state computed in a canonical-ensemble simulation with local moves. The recourse to this method would become a necessity when the stable crystal structure is not known. We show that, rather counterintuitively, metastability problems can be alleviated by reducing (rather than increasing) the size of the system. In particular, the location of liquid-vapor coexistence can exactly be predicted by just TI. On the contrary, TI badly fails in the solid-liquid region, where a better assessment (to within 10% accuracy) of the coexistence pressure can be made by following the expansion, until melting, of the defective solid which has previously emerged from the decay of the metastable liquid. In this work, methods of description of crystal nucleation by using the statistical approach are analyzed. Findings from classical nucleation theory (CNT) for the average time of formation of the first supercritical nucleus are linked with experimental data on nucleation in glass-forming liquids stemming from repetitive cooling protocols both under isothermal and isochronal conditions. It is shown that statistical methods of lifetime analysis, frequently used in medicine, public health, and social and behavioral sciences, are applicable to crystal nucleation problems in glass-forming liquids and are very useful tools for their exploration. Identifying lifetime with the time to nucleate as a random variable in homogeneous and non-homogeneous Poisson processes, solutions for the nucleation rate under steady-state conditions are presented using the hazard rate and related parameters. This approach supplies us with a more detailed description of nucleation going beyond CNT. In particular, we show that cumulative hazard estimation enables one to derive the plotting positions for visually examining distributional model assumptions. As the crystallization of glass-forming melts can involve more than one type of nucleation processes, linear dependencies of the cumulative hazard function are used to facilitate assignment of lifetimes to each nucleation mechanism. The irreversible return of a supercooled liquid to stable thermodynamic equilibrium often begins as a fast process which adiabatically drives the system to solid-liquid coexistence. Only at a later stage will solidification proceed with the expected exchange of thermal energy with the external bath. In this paper we discuss some aspects of the adiabatic freezing of metastable water at constant pressure. In particular, we investigated the thermal behavior of the isobaric gap between the molar volume of supercooled water and that of the warmer ice-water mixture which eventually forms at equilibrium. The available experimental data at ambient pressure, extrapolated into the metastable region within the scheme provided by the reference IAPWS-95 formulation, show that water ordinarily expands upon (partially) freezing under isenthalpic conditions. However, the same scheme also suggests that, for increasing undercoolings, the volume gap is gradually reduced and eventually vanishes at a temperature close to the currently estimated homogeneous ice nucleation temperature. This behavior is contrasted with that of substances which do not display a volumetric anomaly. The return of supercooled water to a stable equilibrium condition is an irreversible process which, in large enough samples, takes place adiabatically. We investigated this phenomenon in water by fast imaging techniques. As water freezes, large energy and density fluctuations promote the spatial coexistence of solid and liquid phases at different temperatures. Upon synchronously monitoring the time evolution of the local temperature, we observed a sharp dynamic transition between a fast and a slow decay regime at about 266.6 K. We construe the observed phenomenon in terms of the temperature dependence of heat transfers from solid and liquid volumes already at their bulk coexistence temperature towards adjacent still supercooled liquid regions. These findings can be justified by observing that convective motions induced by thermal gradients in a supercooled liquid near coexistence are rapidly suppressed as the nucleated solid fraction overcomes, at low enough temperatures, a characteristic percolation threshold. We show by extensive molecular dynamics simulations that accurate predictions of liquid-vapor coexistence in molten alkali halides can be achieved in terms of a rigid ion potential description in which temperature-dependent ionic diameters are employed. The new ionic sizes result from the fitting of the experimental isothermal compressibilities, a condition whose physical implications and consequences are illustrated. The same diameters also allow us to formulate confident predictions for the compressibilities of salts in cases where the experimental data are lacking.
