1. Quantum Order by Disorder: A Key to Understanding the Magnetic Phases of BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$

Abstract

BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ (BCAO), a honeycomb cobaltate, is considered a promising candidate for materials displaying the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. This assumption is based on the distinctive characteristics of Co$^{2+}$ ions (3$d^7$) within an octahedral crystal environment, resulting in spin-orbit-coupled $J_{\rm eff}$~=~1/2 doublet states. However, recent experimental observations and theoretical analyses have raised questions regarding this hypothesis. Despite these uncertainties, reports of continuum excitations reminiscent of spinon excitations have prompted further investigations. In this study, we explore the magnetic phases of BCAO under both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields, employing dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, capacitance, and torque magnetometry measurement. Our results affirm the existence of multiple field-induced magnetic phases, with strong anisotropy of the phase boundaries between in-plane and out-of-plane fields. To elucidate the nature of these phases, we develop a minimal anisotropic exchange model. This model, supported by combined first principles calculations and theoretical modeling, quantitatively reproduces our experimental data. Abstract

Planar tunneling spectroscopy of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ suggests that an interaction between the surface Dirac fermions and the bulk spin excitons results in incompletely protected topological surface states. To gain further insight into their true nature, it is necessary to study other topological Kondo insulator candidates. Calculations of electronic energy bands predict that the Kondo insulator YbB$_{12}$ hosts topological surface states protected by crystalline mirror symmetry. In this study, we present tunneling conductance spectra obtained from the (001) surface of YbB$_{12}$ single crystals and discuss them in comparison to SmB$_6$. The linear conductance at low bias provides strong evidence for the existence of surface Dirac fermions. The double-hump structure in the negative bias region is associated with hybridized band edges, in agreement with a calculated band structure. While these similarities with SmB6 are suggestive of the existence of topological surface states in YbB$_{12}$, in agreement with other experiments, some discrepancies are also observed, which we attribute to a difference in their exact nature from those in SmB$_6$., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physical Review B

Abstract

Conventional BCS superconductors are expected to exhibit a conductivity with vanishing dissipation with decreasing temperature. While bulk physical properties measurements indicate PdPb$_{2}$ is a conventional superconductor with a $T_c$ of 3.0 K, measurements of surface impedance through the microwave cavity perturbation technique indicate a large, non-vanishing dissipative component below $T_c$ that is at odds with conventional superconductivity. We demonstrate PdPb$_2$ to be a possible topological superconductor with a fully gapped bulk and a dissipative Majorana fluid surface.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of renal denervation using the Symplicity system in real-world patients with uncontrolled hypertension (NCT01534299). The Global SYMPLICITY Registry is a prospective, open-label, multicenter registry. Office and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressures (BPs) were measured. Change from baseline to 6 months was analyzed for all patients and for subgroups based on baseline office systolic BP, diabetic status, and renal function; a cohort with severe hypertension (office systolic pressure, ≥160 mm Hg; 24-hour systolic pressure, ≥135 mm Hg; and ≥3 antihypertensive medication classes) was also included. The analysis included protocol-defined safety events. Six-month outcomes for 998 patients, including 323 in the severe hypertension cohort, are reported. Mean baseline office systolic BP was 163.5±24.0 mm Hg for all patients and 179.3±16.5 mm Hg for the severe cohort; the corresponding baseline 24-hour mean systolic BPs were 151.5±17.0 and 159.0±15.6 mm Hg. At 6 months, the changes in office and 24-hour systolic BPs were −11.6±25.3 and −6.6±18.0 mm Hg for all patients ( P P 70% and 5 cases of hospitalization for a hypertensive emergency. In clinical practice, renal denervation resulted in significant reductions in office and 24-hour BPs with a favorable safety profile. Abstract

Background: There is concern about whether cardiac damage occurs as a result of prolonged strenuous exercise. Objective: To investigate whether competing in a triathlon is associated with cardiac damage based on a sustained increase in cardiac troponin T (cTnT), and whether such an increase correlates with echocardiographic changes Methods: cTnT and echocardiographic measurements were made in 38 participants in the 2001 Australian ironman triathlon, cTnT was measured the day before, immediately after, and the day following the race. Echocardiography was done the day before, immediately after, and two to six weeks later far measurement of ejection fraction, stroke volume, cardiac output, wall motion analysis, and global left ventricular function (LVF). Results: No subject had detectable cTnT in the pre-race sample. Following the race, 32 subjects (86.5%) had detectable levels of cTnT (>0.01 ng/ml), with six (16.2%) having >0.10 ng/ml. The day after the race, nine subjects (23.7%) still had detectable cTnT, with two recording a level >0.10 ng/ml. Previously described echocardiographic changes of ‘cardiac fatigue’ were observed in the whole cohort. There was a modest but significant correlation between change in ejection fraction and peak cTnT level (p = 0.02, r = 0.39). Athletes with a post-race cTnT >0.10 ng/ml had a greater decrease in global LVF (p = 0.02) and a trend toward a greater fall in ejection fraction and stroke volume than athletes with cTnT levels <0.10 ng/ml. Cardiac output fell in the group with cTnT >0.10 ng/ml (p>0.05). Conclusions: Participation in ironman triathlon often resulted in persistently raised cTnT levels, and the troponin rise was associated with echocardiographic evidence of abnormal left ventricular function.
