1. Doing Research Overseas without Tears: Adventures of an Innocent Abroad.

Abstract

This paper shares some of the experiences of the author, a former Ph.D. overseas student from Thailand, during the time she was conducting a research project in Australia. Being abroad for the first time, as well as coming from a culture with different norms, values, languages, beliefs, and ways of life, led to most of her days studying overseas being very challenging. The author hopes that sharing these experiences will be useful for other potential overseas students who are in the same or similar situations to acquaint them with what they may confront so they can lessen or avoid similar problems. Challenges discussed include language barriers, academic problems, cultural problems, financial constraints, and emotional problems. Suggestions are offered for alleviating academic problems (i.e., problems related to conducting the research project), including: thoroughly understanding the research process; making oneself clear and better understanding the research topic; reviewing the literature; writing a mind map; discussing the topic; writing down all ideas; keeping up with what is happening in the profession; catching up with available software packages; and doing other academic projects in between. 2. Collaboration between a Technological University Library and Tenant Firms in a Technology Park in Thailand: New Challenges for Librarianship in a Developing Country.

Abstract

The main objective of this research was to develop a suitable model for a Thai university library in information provision to tenant firms in the first Thai technology park. Such a model, which was based on Australian data, was fine-tuned to meet local Thai social and economic conditions. The research process investigated many issues with tenants in five Australian technology parks, including information needs, information use, information seeking behavior, information perception, librarian roles, and characteristics of required information services; the library information services that are already offered to tenant firms by Australian university libraries were also evaluated. The proposed Thai model encompassed five major library activities--policies, collection development, information services, staffing, and promotion and marketing. In Australia, there were three sub-sample groups taken into account: company staff members in five Australian technology parks; the technology park managers; and librarians in Australian university libraries that have formal links with the technology parks. In Thailand, the sample group for a preliminary testing of the proposed model comprised top management personnel of King Mongkut's University of Technology, whose technology park is in the process of establishment, and of three university libraries and one public library involved in information provision. 10. Information services to tenant companies in technology parks : Australia and Thailand.

Abstract

This thesis investigates the most appropriate and effective ways in which a university library can interact with tenant companies and the staff in a technology park. Tenant company staff members in five Australian Technology Parks were surveyed about their information needs, information use, and information seeking behaviour as well as their attitudes towards university libraries which offered services to them. Three of the five Australian Technology Parks had formal relationships with universities and their libraries. The librarians of these universities were interviewed on their attitudes towards the provision of information services to the technology park community, as well as the information services they offered to this group of clients.The research results indicated that most of the respondents who were engaged in R&D areas accessed university libraries' collections for technical information and valued their services and the professional help of the librarians, whereas those in other areas, particularly marketing and sales, did not place as high a value on these services. One striking finding from the research was that the respondents in the latter group use the Internet as their preferred first source of information, not informal personal contact as been expected and indicated in previous studies. A contributing factor to low use of the university libraries was poor promotion of library services.A major objective of the research was to obtain information on the relevance of the Australian data to developing and offering services to tenants in a new technology park in Thailand. Results drawn from the Australian data was used to form a model for the interaction between university libraries and tenant company staff in Thai technology parks. Abstract

This paper outlines 10 years of experiences concerning the inception and operation of the Thai-Journal Citation Index (TCI) Centre, which was the first national citation centre in Thailand and also in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), founded in 2001. The experiences discussed involve the aims and missions of the TCI towards improving the quality and increasing the visibility of local and national research findings. The impacts of the TCI on the academic community are also described, together with the challenges faced in regard to its acceptability, especially by internationally oriented researchers. Various TCI activities to promote and disseminate national research findings are discussed, such as a quality assessment program for Thai journals indexed in TCI, awarding high-quality Thai journals, launching the Thai Journal Online (Thai-JO) system, and identification and comparison of local research performances using TCI and international databases as data sources. Finally, the ASEAN Citation Index (ACI) database is introduced, as part of the preparation for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in conjunction with the TCI and other national citation index databases, in order to enhance the dissemination and quality of ASEAN research profiles on an international platform. Abstract

The article assesses research productivity in the field of energy and fuel among Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries and universities. Standard bibliometric indicators were used for the assessment which were proposed by the Centre for Science and Technology of the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. Results showed that Thailand has the highest number of published research articles, while Singapore was ranked first in terms of total citations and citations per publication.
