Background: Exposure to the breadth of healthcare opportunities is crucial to high-school and college students considering a career in medicine. Most programs revolve around research or subspecialties, limiting exposure to the richness within medicine. Objective: We conducted a program evaluation of the Stanford Clinical Summer Internship (CSI) 2-week program, to understand learner viewpoints around CSI program utility, and to assess long term impact. We assess viewpoints by learner level (high school versus college) and participation mode (in-person versus virtual). Methods: In 2016 we launched a two-week premedical internship, incorporating AAMC core competencies. In 2022 and 2023, we surveyed past participants, collecting demographic data and evaluating/comparing CSI's impact on educational and career paths, future preferences in healthcare careers, and influential factors of matriculation for high-school and college participants. Results: Of 411 past participants, 42% responded (n = 173). We found minimal significant differences between high school and college students. The primary reason for joining was exploring a career in health professions. Notably, 82% acknowledged Stanford-CSI broadened their medical perspectives, 79% gained clarity on healthcare professionals' daily life, 79% heightened their interest in healthcare careers, 71% enhanced their resumes, and 72% learned valuable clinical skills. In-person participants reported developing more friendships (agree/strongly agree: 60% vs 35%, unpaired t-test: p = 0.01), while virtual participants reported having more interest in research careers (40% vs 68%, p = 0.01). Amongst high school matriculants (n = 133), 46% are now in college and 4% in medical or nursing school. Amongst collegiate matriculants (n = 40), 89% have graduated and 11% are now in graduate or medical school. All respondents believed Stanford-CSI was a worthwhile investment of time and resources, with nearly all reporting subsequent increased interest in medicine. Conclusions: Stanford-CSI's summer internship gives premedical students real-world medical profession exposure and fosters meaningful connections. With the number of medical school applicants more than doubling during the past 30 years, there has been an increased need to mentor premedical undergraduate students. The Vertically Inte-grated Training Program at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Columbia, was created to provide direct mentoring for college students interested in a career as a physician. Online surveys were distributed at the beginning and end of the Fall 2023 semester to gain insight into the success of the program's events from the undergraduate perspective. Data suggest a trend toward positive change in terms of increased confidence of undergraduate students regarding the process of applying to and finding success in medical school. The article presents a study which investigated how exposure to geriatric medicine before medical school through Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) impacts students' interest and attitudes toward geriatrics. Topics discussed include self-assessment of perceptions of the field of geriatrics by respondents before and after participating in the HELP program, students' retrospective assessments about themselves before the program, and limitation of this type of assessment.

Objectives: Undergraduate college pathway (or pipeline) programs support students' interests as they explore advanced degree and career pathways. Many programs aimto diversify themedicalworkforce by reducing barriers that may have otherwise prevented desired academic and career goals; however, variability in structure, expectations, benefits, and outcome data exist. This systematic review was conducted to identify and evaluate undergraduate college pathway programs designed to increase the diversity of medical school matriculants. Methods: We searched Ovid Medline, PsycInfo, Scopus, and the Education Resources Information Center for peer-reviewed, original research publications (1996-2019) describing US pathway/pipeline programs designed for undergraduate-level college students from underrepresented groups to apply and enter medical school. Data extraction included application processes, participant demographics, curricular components, social support systems, mentorship, funding, and program/participant outcomes. We reviewed the journal impact factor to inform us about where articles are being published. Results: Our full-text review included 137 articles; 25 articles met the inclusion criteria. All of the papers were descriptive, requiring an application, minimum grade point average, letters of recommendation, and personal statements. All of the programs aimed to diversify medicine, yet some could not request identification of race/ethnicity because of changes in affirmative action or legal restrictions when reporting demographics. Women represented the majority of enrollees. The program length varied; all reported having one or a combination of academic enrichment, research, field observation/experience, andmentorship. All of the programs included career development and various supplemental social supports. Only two programs provided comparison data; four reported no outcomes. Conclusions: Pathway programs support the acquisition and enhancement of professional skills. Lacking longitudinal or comparison data leads to questions of the long-term impact on diversifying the medical workforce. This article highlights a need for rigorous data collection methods and transparent reporting of participant outcomes to inform programmatic efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Health outcome disparities persist among racial and ethnic minorities in the United States, contributing to elevated rates of illness and mortality. Addressing these inequities requires a multifaceted approach, and increasing diversity in the medical profession is emerging as a pivotal strategy. This review examines 25 studies exploring the outcomes of diversity-focused premedical, postbaccalaureate programs for students from underrepresented minority and low socioeconomic backgrounds. The literature underscores the effectiveness of these programs by analyzing time-to-graduation and board exam pass rates. Although medical school attrition rates among postbaccalaureate graduates vary, this review suggests that additional academic support and mentorship may be needed. Most important, it reveals a positive correlation between participation in postbaccalaureate programs and subsequent choice to specialize in primary care in medically underserved areas. Postbaccalaureate programs show potential, not only to diversify the medical workforce, but to remediate healthcare access gaps in underserved communities. However, challenges, such as MCAT preparation, attrition rates, and institutional support, must be systematically addressed to optimize program outcomes. Continued research, better data collection, and collaboration between medical schools and postbaccalaureate programs are essential to mitigating healthcare disparities in the United States. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze patterns of using ChatGPT before and after group activities and to explore medical students' perceptions of ChatGPT as a feedback tool in the classroom. Methods: The study included 99 2nd-year pre-medical students who participated in a "Leadership and Communication" course from March to June 2023. Students engaged in both individual and group activities related to negotiation strategies. ChatGPT was used to provide feedback on their solutions. A survey was administered to assess students' perceptions of ChatGPT's feedback, its use in the classroom, and the strengths and challenges of ChatGPT from May 17 to 19, 2023. Results: The students responded by indicating that ChatGPT's feedback was helpful, and revised and resubmitted their group answers in various ways after receiving feedback. The majority of respondents expressed agreement with the use of ChatGPT during class. The most common response concerning the appropriate context of using ChatGPT's feedback was "after the first round of discussion, for revisions." There was a significant difference in satisfaction with ChatGPT's feedback, including correctness, usefulness, and ethics, depending on whether or not ChatGPT was used during class, but there was no significant difference according to gender or whether students had previous experience with ChatGPT. The strongest advantages were "providing answers to questions" and "summarizing information," and the worst disadvantage was "producing information without supporting evidence." Conclusion: The students were aware of the advantages and disadvantages of ChatGPT, and they had a positive attitude toward using ChatGPT in the classroom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Premedical students typically pursue undergraduate specialization in basic biological and other sciences, learning to understand living systems at a microscopic, genetic, or molecular level. However, curricula in the basic sciences do not traditionally include courses that enable students to learn about living systems at the macro level—understanding individuals within their environment, as well as understanding and managing the health of populations, especially those with underlying conditions or the underserved. This disconnect can be bridged by creating novel curricular programs intersecting medicine and business. Population health management is a multidisciplinary field that aims to improve the patient experience, reduce health care costs, and improve treatment outcomes. Though related to public health, the 2 fields differ in significant ways. Population health management emphasizes health outcomes and their measurements and seeks to improve health outcomes based on a full understanding of risk, behaviors, lifestyle, environment, and all social determinants of health. A shift in premedical education that connects the medical sciences with business requires curricular reform with the emerging field of population health management at their intersection, allowing students to be better prepared for future medical practices and to understand expectations, benchmarks, business, and economics in a new value-based health care system. Introduction: Medical school leaders are seeking strategies to increase the diversity of their student populations. Post-baccalaureate premedical (PBPM) programs are one such pipeline that has supported diversity in medicine. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Uniformed Services University's (USU's) PBPM program (the Enlisted to Medical Degree Preparatory Program, EMDP2) to determine how well it prepares its learners for the School of Medicine (SOM).Materials and Methods: The National Board of Medical Examiners Clinical Science Subject Examination scores of EMDP2 learners from the SOM classes of 2020-2023 were compared to those of four similarly sized cohorts of their peers that varied by age and prior military service.Results: We found that the performance of program graduates was comparable to their peers who followed more traditional and other alternative preparatory paths.Conclusions: The EMDP2 appears to prepare medical students on a par with their non-EMDP2 peers. The EMDP2 contributes to USU's commitment to train physicians who represent the nation and its citizens by making medical education available to enlisted service members, a population that closely mirrors the diversity of the nation. Gender disparities in retention in pathways to science continue to vary widely by course. Undergraduates intending to study prehealth and premedicine often represent a majority of students enrolled in introductory science courses, contribute to a large number of eventual science degree earners, and are a population that typically includes a high number of women. However, gender differences in attrition, grades, and attitudes persist in the introductory science courses required by undergraduate preheath and premedical programs, particularly within the physical sciences (i.e., Chemistry and Physics). We use structural equation modeling to study 416 undergraduate students across multiple sections of an Algebra‐based Physics course, a common course on the prehealth and premedical track where large gender differences in grades, retention and competency beliefs have been documented. Our analysis focuses on identifying potential academic and attitudinal sources for gender differences in students' beliefs about their Physics abilities at the end of the course, and retention to the second physics course, which is often influenced by these competency beliefs. Results suggest that while men's ability beliefs in Physics are relatively stable and largely derived from early performance indicators, this is a smaller source of ability beliefs for women. Instead, women's ability beliefs are mediated during the course through their sense of belonging in Physics, and the extent to which they believe that Physics ability is fixed or malleable. These findings can inform the design of interventions in Physics courses that specifically target the development of ability beliefs for women intending medical careers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To assess how a virtual shadowing (VS) session on breast imaging (BI), shared through social media, can increase interest and awareness of radiology in pre-medical students. Methods: This study was IRB exempt. A VS slide presentation on BI mentorship, didactic lecture, and deidentified image-rich, case-based learning was created. This session was advertised and presented live through an Instagram page (Pre-Health Virtual Shadowing, @virtualshadowing) geared toward pre-health students. Students were asked to complete a two-question self-assessment using a 5-point Likert scale on which 1 was "least" and 5 was "most." Question 1 read: "Please rate your overall knowledge about radiology and what a radiologist does," and question 2 read: "Please rate your interest in possibly looking into radiology as a potential career." Results: A total of 420 participants logged into the VS session; 82% (345/420) answered the presession survey and 48% (202/420) answered the post-session survey. Of post-survey respondents, 84% (170/202) were female and 70% (143/202) were 22 years old or younger. There was a signifi- cant difference in mean pre-session survey responses to question 1 when compared to mean post-session survey responses (2.67 vs 3.55, P < 0.001). There was also a significant difference in mean pre-session survey responses to question 2 when compared to mean post-session survey responses (3.16 vs 3.58, P < 0.001). Our VS session remains on YouTube and has 6157 views to date. We evaluate the effect and feasibility of offering education and mentorship opportunities in surgery to premedical students at our institution through an undergraduate surgery interest group (USIG).Materials and Methods: We conducted a 1-year assessment of our USIG and reviewed its organizational structure, funding resources, media promotion, and educational activities. Our USIG hosted introductory-level surgical skills workshops, guest lectures by surgeons, and various facility tours. To assess participants’ interests, as well as the influences on them to pursue a surgical profession, we analyzed pre- and post-event questionnaires. Similar questionnaires were completed by medical students in our medical student surgery interest group to compare any differences in perception between premedical and medical students.Results: Our USIG currently has 378 undergraduate student members, with a higher proportion of women than in our medical student surgery interest group (P < 0.003). Neurosurgery was the most popular career choice among undergraduate participants. Participants reported the highest satisfaction with suturing and high-fidelity trauma surgery skills workshops. Undergraduate participants indicated that their intrinsic interest in the sciences is the highest motivation to pursue a surgical profession. Resident lifestyle and social obligations of a surgical career were actually positive influences for undergraduate participants; in contrast, medical students viewed those variables as negative factors.Conclusion: Our USIG was met with enthusiasm by premedical students and faculty alike. Participation strengthened premedical students’ interest in pursuing surgery and increased their understanding of the surgical profession. Early mentorship may positively influence premedical students’ perception of surgical careers. Introduction: An estimated 5 billion people lack access to safe surgical care. Development and nurturing of medical student interest in global surgery can play a part in addressing this need. This study examines characteristics and experiences of medical students in the United States (US) associated with interest in global surgery., Methods: A cross-sectional survey study of US-based medical students was performed. Student leaders from the Global Surgery Student Alliance were recruited via email and distributed the online survey to peers at their institutions. Responses from students currently training outside of the US were excluded, as were surveys with <80% completion. Descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis were performed with p < 0.05 indicating significance in R (Vienna, Austria)., Results: About 708 responses from students at 38 US medical schools were analyzed. 251 students (34.6%) identified as being interested in global surgery. After adjusting for covariates on multivariable regression, demographic factors significantly associated with interest in global surgery were Hispanic/Latino ethnicity (in comparison to Non-Hispanic White/Caucasian, OR = 1.30) and being born outside of the United States (OR = 1.21). Increased interest was also associated with previous clinical experiences in low or middle-income countries (OR = 1.19), public or global health experiences (OR = 1.18), and international service experiences (OR = 1.13)., Conclusions: While many factors may influence student interest in global surgery, previous global health experience and nonclinical global service work are important predictors regardless of background. Limited opportunities exist for university premedical students to gain exposure to the realities of clinical practice through physician shadowing or through a formal curriculum. Medical Professionalism and Observership utilizes didactics, reflective writing, small- and large- group discussions, and clinical observerships to enhance the process of professional identity formation during a critical developmental window of late- adolescence. The pilot semester included a sample of 135 students, all in their sophomore, junior, or senior years of study at Rice University. Students were selected through an application process and paired with physicians at Houston Methodist Hospital based on specialty preference and availability. Students were required to participate in biweekly lectures and discussions and to submit a weekly reflection on topics discussed in the course and their shadowing experiences. Student evaluations were administered to survey changes in students' knowledge and perceptions of the curriculum. Selected reflections were read for evidence of professional identity formation. Lectures increased students' exposure to core competencies within the medical profession and influenced their desire to become physicians. Reflective writings demonstrated integration of these core competencies into the professional identity of students. Structured reflection and didactics, when coupled with physician shadowing, appear to promote integration of the values, beliefs, and attitudes of medical professionalism. Future studies should seek to demonstrate how such a curriculum affects professional identity formation through established measures, and to assess whether such a curriculum may influence students' preparedness for medical training and practice as they progress along their careers. Narrative analysis, creative writing, and interactive reflective writing have been identified as valuable for professional identity formation and resilience among medical and premedical students alike. This study proposes that medical student blogs are novel pedagogical tools for fostering peer-to-peer learning in academic medicine and are currently underutilized as a near-peer resource for premedical students to learn about the medical profession. To evaluate the pedagogical utility of medical student blogs for introducing core themes in the medical humanities, the authors conducted qualitative analysis of one hundred seventy-six reflective essays by baccalaureate premedical students written in response to medical student-authored narrative blog posts. Using an iterative thematic approach, the authors identified common patterns in the reflective essays, distilled major themes, coded the essays, and conducted narrative analysis through close reading. Qualitative analysis identified three core themes (empathic conflict, bias in healthcare, and the humanity of medicine) and one overarching theme (near-peer affinities). The premedical students' essays demonstrated significant self-reflection in response to near-peer works, discussed their perceptions of medical professionalism, and expressed concerns about their future progress through the medical education system. The essays consistently attributed the impact of the medical student narratives to the authors' status as near-peers. The authors conclude that reading and engaging in reflective writing about near-peer blog posts encourages premedical students to develop an understanding of core concepts in the medical humanities and promotes their reflection on the profession of medicine. Thus, incorporating online blogs written by medical trainees as narrative works in medical humanities classrooms is a novel pedagogical method for fostering peer-to-peer learning in academic medicine. Peer teaching is an educational methodology in which groups of students interact among each other. One group takes on the role of the educator and the other one takes on the role of the student, which benefits both of them. We report here the case of a program where this methodology was used by students in a medical school in Lima, Peru, who were tutors of junior students from the same faculty. Abundant literature supports the value of interprofessional education (IPE) in health profession programs, but few studies focus on undergraduate honors students. The goals of this academic-practice partnership quality improvement project were to increase awareness of IPE, provide experiential opportunities to learn the principles of interprofessional practice, assess perceptions of readiness for practice, and to explore motivations and learning expectations of undergraduate nursing and pre-medical honors students. Average scores on the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) increased in several areas after the IPE simulation experiences, with small to medium effect sizes (Cohen's d) on individual items and two subscales (Teamwork & Collaboration and Positive Professional Identity). Themes identified in the narrative data were opportunity , fun , self-awareness , situational awareness , and the value of teamwork. Purpose Premedical education is one stage in which various educational approaches are used to promote critical thinking. Given that critical thinking ability could be regarded as one of the intended outcomes of social science and humanities education, this study explored the effectiveness of a course to promote critical thinking in a premedical curriculum using both literature and film. Methods Fifty-one 2nd year premedical students enrolled in a ‘Critical Thinking for Premeds’ course. Students were required to read or watch a selected material, submit group discussion agendas, attend five group discussion sessions, and write critical essays. Five tutors facilitated the group discussions, observed and assessed the students’ performance and critical essay. Students’ critical thinking disposition and opinion on assigned reading materials were examined before and after the course. A program evaluation survey was conducted to investigate the students’ reaction after the course. Results On average, students appreciated 78.6% of the total assigned materials. The students indicated that group discussions and the narrative comments of facilitators contributed the most to develop critical thinking. After the course, the students’ tendency preferring cheaper price books, as well as medicine-related books decreased significantly. Students who had critical essay scores greater than or equal to the median demonstrated a significant improvement in critical thinking disposition scores. Conclusion The course was well-accepted by premedical students and had several positive outcomes. A more effective use of the course could be anticipated with a clearer explanation of the purpose, the consideration of previous reading experience, and use of complementary learning activities.

Previous research has documented that negative experiences in chemistry courses are a major factor that discourages many students from continuing in premedical studies. This adverse impact affects women and students from under-represented minority (URM) groups disproportionately. To determine if chemistry courses have a similar effect at a large public university, we surveyed 1,036 students from three entering cohorts at the University of California, Berkeley. We surveyed students at the beginning of their first year at the university and again at the end of their second year. All subjects had indicated an interest in premedical studies at the time they entered the university. We conducted follow-up interviews with a stratified sub-set of 63 survey respondents to explore the factors that affected their level of interest in premedical studies. Using a 10-point scale, we found that the strength of interest in premedical studies declined for all racial/ethnic groups. In the follow-up interviews, students identified chemistry courses as the principal factor contributing to their reported loss of interest. URM students especially often stated that chemistry courses caused them to abandon their hopes of becoming a physician. Consistent with reports over more than 50 years, it appears that undergraduate courses in chemistry have the effect of discouraging otherwise qualified students, as reflected in their admission to one of the most highly selective public universities in the US, from continuing in premedical studies, especially in the case of URM students. Reassessment of this role for chemistry courses may be overdue.

Context: The Aspiring DOctors PreCollege Program at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Cleveland Campus is unique among other precollege pipeline and mini-medical school programs in that it engages learners from urban underserved communities for an entire academic year as a cocurricular adjunct to their high school course load. One day per month, students are brought to the medical college campus and introduced to the field of osteopathic medicine. Students also participate in activities related to preparing for college admissions, diversity in higher education, mental health and wellness, and financial stewardship. All these activities are done with the goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minority (URM) students in the health care professions. Objective: Self-efficacy has been identified as a measure of internal motivation and belief in one's ability to succeed in the face of challenges. The purpose of this study is to determine what effect, if any, participation in this program has on URM student self-efficacy. Methods: Students were asked to complete a validated self-efficacy questionnaire at the start and end of this program to determine their levels of self-efficacy and if there were changes after participating in this program. Results: Ten of the 12 seniors completed pre- and post-self-efficacy surveys. Two main discoveries were made through this pilot. First, when tested at the beginning of the program, all students had high levels of self-efficacy (mean score, 4.45 of 5). Second, 2 items were specifically increased by a statistically significant amount. The students increased in self-efficacy concerning the responses "I can learn what is being taught in class this year" (P =.024) and "My ability grows with effort" (P =.015). Conclusions: With the competitive standards of acceptance into the Aspiring DOctors PreCollege Program, students enrolled in this program had high levels of self-efficacy from the onset. While there was modest increase across the board, many of these indicators remained consistently high after the program. As the medical school admissions process becomes increasingly competitive, there is an increased mental and emotional burden on undergraduate premedical students due to uncertainty about acceptance. Mentors in Medicine is a mentoring program between Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and Texas Tech University students; the data demonstrate that this program can alleviate some negative emotional aspects faced by premedical students on their journey to medical school. The program interventions include establishing mentor-mentee relationships between medical students and premedical students, hosting various events to encourage dialogue, and promoting communication efforts from medical mentors. These interventions were found to significantly decrease feelings of anxiety or nervousness, as well as feelings of doubt or insecurity. This study aimed to (1) evaluate the effects of an empathy education program, and (2) explore functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as a potential empathy assessment tool. An empathy enhancement program for premedical students was developed. The Korean version of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Student version (JSE-S) and Interpersonal Reactivity Index (K-IRI) were used to measure self-assessed changes in empathy. Clinical vignettes demonstrating empathy tasks were presented to participants undergoing fMRI, to assess regional changes in the brain. Self-reported empathy scores and brain activity signals using fMRI from before and after the program were compared. The JSE-S total and perspective taking scores significantly increased after the program. Data from the fMRI revealed noticeable differences in cognitive regions associated with empathy, namely the right superior medial frontal gyrus and left precentral gyrus. This study results support the prior evidence of positive impact of empathy education. The authors present a premedical education program, unprecedented in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), that has been able to address the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Pre-Medicine Bridge Program (PMBP) at Khalifa University uses holistic methods to prepare graduate students for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and application to the MD program. Participants are predominantly Emirati and international STEM graduates who are at a disadvantage for success on the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) section of the MCAT for linguistic, educational, and sociocultural reasons. COVID-19 lockdown exacerbates the intrinsic CARS struggles facing these PMBP students, but through swift course restructuring and sound distance-learning pedagogy, their CARS learning has progressed. Purpose We tested the effect of team-based learning (TBL) on medical education through the second-year premedical students’ TBL scores in biochemistry classes over 5 years. Methods We analyzed the results based on test scores before and after the students’ debate. The groups of students for statistical analysis were divided as follows: group 1 comprised the top-ranked students, group 3 comprised the low-ranked students, and group 2 comprised the medium-ranked students. Therefore, group T comprised 382 students (the total number of students in group 1, 2, and 3). To calibrate the difficulty of the test, original scores were converted into standardized scores. We determined the differences of the tests using Student t-test, and the relationship between scores before, and after the TBL using linear regression tests. Results Although there was a decrease in the lowest score, group T and 3 showed a significant increase in both original and standardized scores; there was also an increase in the standardized score of group 3. There was a positive correlation between the pre- and the post-debate scores in group T, and 2. And the beta values of the pre-debate scores and “the changes between the pre- and post-debate scores” were statistically significant in both original and standardized scores. Conclusion TBL is one of the educational methods for helping students improve their grades, particularly those of low-ranked students.

In 1999, Tougaloo College (TC), located in Jackson, Mississippi, was charged, as a part of its role in the Jackson Heart Study (JHS), with creating a pool of well-trained high school students who, upon entering college, could successfully complete undergraduate and graduate or professional degrees in the health professions, biomedical research, and public health. TC identified the following educational challenges experienced by Mississippi high school students: inadequate exposure to reading, writing, logic, and quantitative skills; inadequate course work in science and mathematics; lack of mentors and role models in science-related fields as well as for exploration and identification of career options in the health professions and biomedical research. To this end, the JHS Undergraduate Training and Education Center (JHS UTEC) developed three four-week summer workshops in Science, Language Arts, and Mathematics (SLAM) for high school students in grades 9 through 11. Since SLAM's inception, more than 900 students have completed the program, and more than 90% have enrolled in college. In addition, according to National Student Clearinghouse and participant-reported data, many of the SLAM participants have earned not only undergraduate degrees in science, but also graduate degrees in a health-related and STEM fields. This article details the SLAM curricula and strategies for recruiting, selecting, training, and retaining high school students; we also present data to illustrate the success of the SLAM program. The Youth Enjoy Science (YES) Program at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) R25-funded training grant, designed to increase the pipeline of underrepresented minority (URM) students entering college and pursuing biomedical research and health care careers in the Cleveland Metropolitan and surrounding school districts. The three components of the program include: Learn to Beat Cancer, engaging middle school students and their families; Research to Beat Cancer, designed for high school students and college undergraduates; and Teach to Beat Cancer, focused on enhancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching capacity among high school teachers. This study focuses on Research to Beat Cancer, which, in 2018 enrolled 36 URM students as paid summer scholars. Students were assigned to a faculty mentor, were taught laboratory safety, responsible conduct of research and the scientific method, and then immersed in full-time laboratory cancer research during an eight-week period. Twice each week, students participated in Lunch and Learn Seminars where faculty members provided combined motivational and scientific guidance lectures. In a capstone poster session at the end of the program, students presented their research to peers, medical and graduate students, family members, faculty, community members and leaders. Students' perceptions of the program were reported using descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic analyses. Twenty-four of the 2018 YES students (67%) and 19 (53%) mentors completed the online post-program survey. Opportunity was a major qualitative theme from student and mentor responses. Context: Student interest in and national recognition for the value of global education is expanding. Opportunities for interprofessional education (IPE) are a required component of athletic training education and education of other health care professions. Objective: To describe the development of a short-term study abroad IPE course in the international setting of Australia. Background: While some literature is available for discipline-specific study abroad experiences, limited information is available for implementing IPE in the international setting. Description: Two faculty leaders from athletic training and speech language pathology, with IPE experience, designed and conducted a 17-day immersive study abroad experience for 12 students from 7 health care professional programs (athletic training, nursing, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, premedical, occupational therapy, and speech language pathology). Clinical Advantage: Students desire unique, global learning experiences but may have trouble studying abroad for full semesters due to the lockstep nature of curriculum within their professional education programs. Having students learn from, with, and about each other in an international setting may enhance their preparation for collaborative practice. Conclusions: Short-term study abroad opportunities offer an alternative to satisfy student interest in global education while meeting programmatic requirements for IPE. Despite women's greater propensity to enter college aspiring to careers in medicine, they are less likely than men to persist in these ambitions. Past research suggests that students' experiences in coursework strongly influence their decision to continue along or depart from the premedical track, yet it remains unclear whether women and men have differential experiences in coursework that contribute to sex-based disparities in premedical attrition. To gain insight into whether and how premeds' experiences in coursework contribute to gendered patterns of attrition, this study employs a mixed methods design that combines longitudinal survey data collected from premedical students at a large state university with in-depth interview data collected from a subset of respondents. Survey results (n = 268) demonstrate that while women report more stress from premedical coursework than men, these differences do not help to explain the female-male gap in attrition. Rather, it is women's lower levels of affinity for premedical coursework—specifically, their less positive evaluations of premed coursework, and greater enjoyment of non-premed courses—that contribute most notably to the gender gap in attrition. Qualitative results (n = 39) suggest that women's affinity for premed coursework is diminished by more frequent, negative interactions with faculty, and a tendency to interpret low grades in premedical coursework as a sign that this career track is a 'poor fit' for their strengths and aptitudes. These findings broadly align with scholarship on the role of self-expressive decision-making in curricular sex segregation. Interview data also point to a critical factor for sustaining women's medical career aspirations: clinical experiences. Ranging from shadowing, to volunteer experiences, to jobs in local hospitals, these experiences allow women to 'try on' the role of doctor and inspire resilience in the face of academic adversity. Abstract Rural American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities face physician vacancy rates over 25%. A variety of programs aim to address those gaps, from early-life STEM initiatives for AI/ANs to physician loan repayment programs. However, unfilled clinical positions and underrepresentation of AI/AN physicians persist. We review existing workforce initiatives, then demonstrate that three recently developed clinical fellowship programs fill an important gap. The fellowships, led by faculty at large academic health centers, place fellows in clinical positions in rural AI/AN communities in partnership with tribal health systems and/or the Indian Health Service. In addition to providing clinical care, the fellowships seek to enhance health systems' capacity development through community-centered initiatives that include training and health promotion. Other academic health centers should consider working together with tribal communities to assess whether replication of the models could reduce local physician staffing gaps and health disparities. Context: Medical school admissions committees use a variety of criteria to determine which candidates to admit to their programmes. Effective communication is increasingly considered a key requisite to the practice of effective medicine. Medical students with pre‐medical backgrounds in the humanities and social sciences may be more likely to acquire skills relevant to patient‐centred communication, either prior to or during medical school. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between pre‐medical backgrounds in the humanities and social sciences and outcomes in medical school, including in communication and interpersonal skills (CIS), licensure examination results and postgraduate specialty choice (primary care versus non‐primary care specialties). Methods: The American Medical College Application Service database was used to identify pre‐medical college majors, demographic characteristics, Medical College Admission Test scores and college grade point averages for medical students at a large, midwestern medical school. Data were obtained for 465 medical students across three cohorts (classes of 2014–2016). Correlation and regression analyses were used to examine relationships between pre‐medical background, performance on graduation competency examination standardised patient encounter CIS scores and on United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge scores, and postgraduate specialty choice. Results: Graduating medical students with pre‐medical humanities or social sciences majors performed significantly better in terms of CIS than those with natural science majors (Cohen's d = 0.28, p = 0.011). There were no significant associations between pre‐medical majors and USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge scores or postgraduate specialty choice. Conclusions: These results suggest that considering humanistic factors as part of admissions criteria may promote the selection and training of physicians with good communication skills. The authors analyze the curriculum of a summer pipeline program for underserved premedical students. They compare qualitative data on the delivery and experience of curricular activities obtained from 48 activity descriptions, participant surveys, and faculty/staff observations against the 15 American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) core competencies. Retrospective and follow-up data obtained from program applications and alumni surveys are used to describe the demographics and longitudinal career outcomes for the 228 participants from 2002 to 2018. The analysis identifies 10 fully addressed and 5 partially addressed AAMC competencies in the 6-week curriculum. Ninety-two graduates matriculated into medical school, 83 (90 percent) from groups underrepresented in medicine. Support from experientially similar others—individuals who have been through the same life transition or faced a similar set of stressful circumstances—has been shown to be effective for coping with issues ranging from chronic illness to bereavement. Less research has examined how networks comprised of experientially similar others may shape academic outcomes. Using longitudinal egocentric network data collected from early career premedical students at a large research university (n = 268), results indicate that greater experiential homophily in premeds' networks are associated with a lower likelihood of departing from the premedical career track at the end of the academic year. Interview data (n = 39) highlight three support functions provided by premedical peers that help to explain this relationship: 1) concrete task assistance with assignments and studying, 2) empathic understanding and emotional support, and 3) advice and reassurance from more advanced peers. Results hint at the potential utility of peer support for the retention of students at-risk of straying from the premedical career track, and have implications for other fields of study. Phenomenon: Although most premedical students shadow physicians prior to starting medical school, there is no set of guidelines or expectations to facilitate effective experiences for students and physicians, nor is there data on the value of shadowing medical trainees as a way to learn about the training environment. We sought to understand premedical student perspectives on an intensive resident shadowing experience. Approach: This was a qualitative study using anonymous data from focus groups conducted with premedical student participants in a month-long time motion analysis of internal medicine interns at two large academic medical centers. The authors convened, professionally transcribed verbatim, and analyzed data using step-by-step thematic analysis from 3 focus groups in 2012. Focus group questions included goals of participants, shadowing experiences, patient safety experiences, and thoughts on physician training. Findings: Twenty of the 22 students who were involved in the time motion study participated in the focus groups (91%). Three major themes were generated from the transcripts: qualities of a good physician, the inefficiencies of the healthcare system and the hospital, and the realities of graduate medical education. Insights: The intensive shadowing experience exposed premedical students to the hospital environment and many of the challenges they will face as future residents. Observing patient care firsthand, students considered the qualities of good intern physicians and appreciated the teamwork and collaboration essential to patient care in an academic medical center. Students witnessed some of the fundamental challenges of graduate medical training, including time pressures, documentation requirements, and the medical hierarchy. They also observed the difficulties of providing quality care in the current healthcare system, including hospital inefficiencies, interprofessional tensions, and financial barriers to care. Intensive shadowing of residents can begin the process of socialization to the culture of medicine by giving premedical students a realistic perspective of both positive and negative aspects of medical training and inpatient care. Background:Pakistan currently has two forms of pre medical educational setup prevalent. FSc. relies heavily on rote memorization while A-levels, involves Problem Based Learning (PBL) and critical thinking. The choices of premedical education have impact on learning methodologies amongst students in their MBBS career pathway. Methodology: A cross sectional survey conducted at Fatima Memorial Hospital College of Medicine and Dentistry, Lahore during December 2014 to March 2015. A non-probability consecutive sampling technique was used to select 139 first year MBBS students. A self administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data was analyzed using SPSS 20.Chi square test for association and statistical significance was applied and p value of > 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Among 139 students, 45(32%) were males and 94(67%) were females. Out of these 139 students, 68.8% of the males and 74.9% of females opted for FSc. Around 76% of Pakistani nationals had studied in FSc system while 24% had gone for A 'levels as compared to foreign nationals (p value 0.018). Among 108 students who preferred problem based learning 71.3% had done FSc and 28.7% had done A 'levels (p value 0.213).Seventy eight percent of the students want to stay in Pakistan after completion of their studies have done FSc (p value 0.028). Background: Physicians with backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (URiM) are more likely to practice in underserved communities. Recruitment into and assistance during medical education has the potential to increase the number of URiM physicians. This study analyzes URiM students' academic performance at a well-established Caribbean school with and without prior successful completion of the Medical Education Readiness Program (MERP). Methods: A retrospective analysis of premedical school requirements and achievements in medical school were performed for URiM students enrolled in Ross University School of Medicine between 2006 and 2012, through either MERP or direct admission. For MERP and non-MERP students, an independent sample two-tailed Student t-test was used to compare prerequisite Grade Point Average (p GPA), Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), and The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 scores. Chi-square analysis was performed to compare the attrition rates for MERP and non-MERP URiM students in the first years of medical schools well as USMLE Step 1 pass rates. Results: A total of 1299 students entering medical school directly (n = 981) or through MERP (n = 318) were evaluated. The mean MCAT (19.6 for MERP vs. 21.6 for non-MERP, P < 0.001) and prerequisite GPA (2.8 for MERP vs. 3.1 for non-MERP, P < 0.001) were significantly lower for the MERP students. A similar percentage of MERP and non-MERP students reached the 2nd year (83.0% and 80.9% respectively, P = 0.407) and 3rd year (80.5% and 79.0% respectively, P = 0.565) of medical school. USMLE Step 1 pass rates for MERP (90.6%) and non-MERP (92.3%) as well as USMLE Step 1 mean scores (208.9 and 210.0 for MERP and non-MERP, respectively) were also comparable.
