Background: Medical students are highly prone to stress, anxiety, and depression due to academic and psychosocial challenges, emphasizing the need for effective mental health interventions.Objectives: This research aims to investigate the levels of perceived stress among healthcare students and its relationship with anxiety and depression.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among medical students at GMC Almora using a validated questionnaire. The 14-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) was employed to assess perceived stress, while the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was utilized to measure anxiety and depression. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16.Results: The mean age of the participants was 21.15±2.04 years. Out of 278 students, 140 were male, and 138 were female; 21 reported having a known illness in the past. The study found that 52.1% of students experienced moderate to high levels of perceived stress. Regarding anxiety levels, 24.5% of students reported moderate anxiety, while 23% experienced concerning levels of anxiety. Approximately 7.6% of students indicated they had a known illness. Perceived stress was significantly associated with anxiety, depression, gender, academic year, and the presence of known illness.Conclusion: Stress is highly prevalent among healthcare students and is strongly associated with female gender as well as levels of anxiety and depression. Therefore, addressing the mental health of healthcare students is crucial, as it significantly impacts perceived stress and identifies at-risk individuals.

Introduction: Children who are born with disability, more so intellectual disability are dependant on their parents for their daily needs. The presence of disabled child in the family adds to the caregiver burden which may read to emotional distress manifesting as anger, depression, stigma, etc. The study aimed to assess both the positive and negative impacts of having a disabled child in the family on caregivers. Methodology: The present, cross-sectional study was conducted in a rural area of Jammu district using simple random sampling, two health zones out of eight were selected for the conduct of the study. All the disabled children were identified and their parents were interviewed using National Institute of Mental Health-Disability Impact Scale Scale after taking an informed consent from them (IECGJ)(NO: IEC/GMC/2019/892). Results: During the course of the study, a total of 101 caregivers of disabled children were interviewed. Both negative and positive impact on the caregivers was found to be in close approximation to the tune of 15%–16%. Among the negative impacts, financial burden was the most dominant domain followed by physical care of the child and caregiver health being affected. Conclusion: It would be pertinent to conclude that we need to empower the caregivers as an important step for the inclusion of these special children in the society. In this context, few recommendations have been discussed in the present study.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the morbidity profile of patients attending dermatology outpatient department in a tertiary care center of Kumaun region, North India. Methods: The present study was a retrospective, record-based cross-sectional study in which OP registers of the Department of Dermatology from July 2023 to July 2024 were analyzed. Skin diseases were grouped into different groups and the frequency of cases in each group was studied. Data analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 16. Results: A total of 5118 patients were recorded in this study. About 44.7% were male while 55.2 % were females. All disorders were broadly classified into non-infectious and infectious dermatoses, out of them acne was most common in non-infectious group while tinea was most common in infectious group. Conclusion: Infections and eczemas which could be managed in primary healthcare set-up contributed to the majority of the OP attendance of our tertiary care center. The peripheral institutions should be strengthened in manpower and the level of knowledge and skills.

Conventional hemostatic treatments may occasionally help reduce the bleeding but are not an effective long‐term solution. Uterine Artery Embolization, a minimally invasive intervention, can halt the bleeding, achieving hemostasis, while removing many of the complications that alternative interventions carry. We outline a case study of a patient with extensive vaginal bleeding who had uterocervical malignancy and talk about the benefits of uterine artery embolisation for therapeutic management.

The power output of photovoltaic (PV) systems, especially bifacial modules, varies due to daily fluctuations in irradiance and temperature. Maximising the efficiency and power extraction are considered crucial. Hybrid DC off-grid topologies are highly promising for rural electrification with solar energy and battery backup. These systems, tailored for household appliance use, feature low semiconductor count, continuous current ports for PV, battery and DC loads, low-voltage levels for PV and battery, voltage regulation for DC loads, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), proper battery charging and discharging, high-voltage boosting without low-frequency transformers and reduced power converter stages. However, the existing schemes often lack the above-mentioned critical features. Hence, this paper proposes a novel three-switch tri-port converter with integrated energy storage for stand-alone bifacial PV applications, with modelling and experimental validation. The battery serves as an energy storage component, regulating the DC link voltage for consistency. This paper underscores PV system power optimisation and introduces a novel tri-port converter for stand-alone bifacial PV setups, emphasising energy storage’s role in voltage regulation.

The present study was conducted to determine the availability of bioactive phytomolecules in the Dhaman (Grewia tiliifolia) fruit collected from a sub-tropical region of India. Methanolic and ethanolic extracts were prepared from processed Dhaman fruits. The extracts were screened for phytomolecules using the Gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method. Results found that the methanolic extract has alkaloids at 5%, esters at 21%, triterpenoids at 2%, fatty alcohol at 5%, acid chloride at 2%, hydrocarbons at 26%, and steroids at 2%. However, the ethanolic extract has alkaloids (2%), ester (27%), fatty alcohol (6%), hydrocarbons (9%), steroids (13%), amide (4%), and triglycerides (2%) in different amounts. From this study, it has been concluded that the Dhaman fruit is highly enriched in different phytomolecules. As a result, Dhaman fruit has a high potential for curing various human diseases and well-being.

Abstract The paper presents an approach to develop assistive devices by combining multimodal biosignals and radio frequency identification (RFID). The brain and eye signals have been used as multimodal biosignals to control the movement of a robot in four directions and help reach near the object following a predefined path. RFID shared control over object identification, and the gripper arm connected at the end effector of the robot performs pick and place operations. Horizontal electrooculography (EOG) has been used for x-directional movement control and electroencephalography (EEG) signal obtained by visual stimulus, called steady-state visual-evoked potential (SSVEP) has been used for y-directional movement control of a robot. The SSVEP signal has also been used to ring an alarm in case of an emergency call by the user. Two parameters classification accuracy (CA) and information transfer rate (ITR) have been calculated for the performance evaluation of the proposed multimodal-shared control model and have shown improved results as compared to previous literature. The results also proved that the proposed model can be used for real-time mobility assistive applications.

Background: Disabled Children suffer Intellectual Disability/ies (ID) to a varying extent. Role of environmental and non-genetic factors in Intellectual Disability remains largely unexplored in developing nations. The study aimed to determine Intellectual Disability among disabled rural children and its association of various demographic variables. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in a randomly selected rural health zone. 52 children of ages 1 18 years with various disabilities were assessed for IQ by a clinical psychologist using Developmental Screening Test, Sequin Form Board test, CM Bhatia test and Vineland Social Maturity Scale. Chi-square test was used to find associations, if any. Results: 16 children out of 52 were suffering from Intellectual Disability thus resulting in a prevalence of 30.7%. Early identification and appropriate management are crucial for improved outcomes in patients with this rare manifestation of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection. Abstract CHIKV infection is commonly associated with fever and joint pains, but neurological complications such as encephalitis are rare. Here, we present a unique case of confirmed chikungunya encephalitis in a 12‐year‐old male exhibiting atypical neurological symptoms. The diagnostic journey involved comprehensive neuroimaging and serological investigations, revealing intriguing findings on magnetic resonance imaging and positive CHIKV RNA in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. We discuss the clinical presentation, radiological characteristics, and management strategies, emphasizing the importance of recognizing this uncommon neurological manifestation of CHIKV infection.

Sebaceous gland tumors are neoplasms originating from the sebaceous gland and are the third most common type of skin tumor, accounting for 21–35% of all cutaneous neoplasms in dogs. According to their histopathological characteristics, sebaceous gland tumors can be classified into adenoma as a benign tumor and epithelioma as a malignant tumor. Sebaceous epithelioma is distinguished from sebaceous adenoma by containing 90% or more reserve cells. However, this simple numerical criterion is insufficient to histologically distinguish between epitheliomas and adenomas. In addition, sebaceoma in humans, a similar tumor to sebaceous epithelioma, is a term used for tumors with more than 50% of reserve cells, unlike epithelioma. Therefore, we aimed to compare and characterize the histological and immunohistochemical profiles of comprehensive sebaceous adenoma, epithelioma, and borderline tumors that have more than 50% but less than 90% of reserve cells. A total of 14 canine sebaceous tumors were diagnosed as seven adenomas, four borderline tumors, and three epitheliomas. Histologically, the sebaceous adenomas showed nodules consisting of mature sebocytes surrounded by monolayer basaloid cells. In contrast, the portion of the reserve cells was increased, the portion of lipidized cells was decreased, and the majority of lipidized cells were found to be immature in sebaceous epithelioma. In the sebaceous adenomas, necrosis was not observed and mitotic figures were rarely seen. However, necrosis and mitotic figures were highly frequent in both borderline tumor and sebaceous epithelioma. Immunohistochemistry revealed that borderline tumor and sebaceous epithelioma showed significantly higher expression against Ki-67 than sebaceous adenoma. We conclude that it is more accurate to employ the cut-off value of 50% reserve cells in humans rather than the current 90% reserve cells for classifying sebaceous gland tumors in dogs, thereby providing new insight into the characterization of the sebaceous gland tumors.

The paper industry faces two critical challenges: the scarcity of raw materials and the environmental impact of chemical waste pollution. Addressing the first challenge involves harnessing alternative, sustainable raw materials, while the second challenge can be mitigated through the adoption of bio-bleaching processes, which significantly reduce chemical consumption while enhancing paper brightness and quality. This study proposes a solution to both challenges by using non-woody Calotropis procera (Ankara) and a xylanase-producing microbial consortium for sustainable handmade paper production, a combination not extensively explored in prior research. To evaluate this approach, the process was divided into three stages. In stage I, Ankara fibre was pulped through open hot digestion. In stage II, the pulp was subjected to bio-bleaching in two experimental setups: Set I (without sucrose) and Set II (with sucrose) for 5 days. In stage III, chemical bleaching was used to improve the final brightness of the treated pulps. A novel comparison was made between the bio-bleaching efficiency of an individual isolate g5 (BI) and a bacterial consortium (BC). This research highlighted that bio-bleaching with the consortium effectively removed lignin (140±60 mg/l) and colour (1830±50 PCU), especially in the presence of sucrose, compared to using a single xylanase isolate. Pulp residue/filtrate collected at each stage was estimated based on parameters such as colour and lignin content. After stage III (chemical bleaching), the release of colour and lignin in pulp filtrate was higher in BI compared to BC, indicating the consortium's effectiveness during bio-bleaching, which leaves fewer degradable lignin structures for the chemical bleaching stage. Papers crafted from consortium-treated pulp also exhibited higher brightness than those treated with the isolate. This study reveals the synergistic effect of microbial consortia, leading to more efficient lignin degradation and enhanced bio-bleaching capabilities, supporting the development of greener industrial processes. Ultimately, this study demonstrates a unique and eco-friendly approach to papermaking, combining C. procera and enzymatic bio-bleaching to reduce dependency on hazardous chemicals and support sustainable industry practices.

Background: Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for the right-side colon cancer is well-established and proven to be better than the open approach in terms of post-operative and overall hospital stay. Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy can be done by lateral to medial approach (LA), medial to lateral approach (MA), or tunnel/IRETA approach (TA). No previous study has been conducted to compare the clinical outcomes of all three approaches and the superiority of one approach over the other is still debatable. Aims and Objectives: This retrospective study was conducted to compare all three approaches and to find the ideal one to practice. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study carried out to analyze 86 patients who were admitted to the department of General Surgery from March 2015 to December 2021 with a diagnosis of the right-side colon cancer and underwent laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with either of these three approaches. A total of 29 patients had operated with lateral to medial approach (LA), 29 patients with medial approach (MA), and 28 with tunnel (TA) approach. The patient’s baseline demographics, perioperative parameters, and post-operative outcomes were compared. Results: Intraoperative blood loss was significantly lower in the medial to lateral approach and tunnel approach. Duration of surgery was less in the medial to lateral approach as compared to the other two approaches and was statistically significant. R0 resection, lymph node dissection, intraoperative and post-operative complications, morbidity, mortality, and conversion to open were similar in all three groups. Conclusion: Laparoscopic medial to lateral to medial to lateral approach is feasible and safe and should be preferred approaches in laparoscopic right hemicolectomy.

Background & objectives: The highly sensitive method for a true understanding of malaria prevalence is of utmost importance for India’s elimination strategy. The PCR reaction type with rapid detection, cost-effectiveness, and less workforce should be preferable. Multiplex PCR type accomplishes the present requirement by saving time and resources to find true surveillance data for malaria, especially in low-parasitemia/asymptomatic groups or populations. Methods: The present study focuses on designing multiplex PCR (mPCR) to detect simultaneously Plasmodium genus (PAN) and two common Plasmodium species found in India. It is compared to standard nested PCR on 195 clinical samples to diagnose malaria. The mPCR was designed with a minimum number of primers, leading to less clogging and effective and enhanced detection. It contains one common reverse primer and three forward primers amplifying three targeted genes corresponding to P. falciparum, P. vivax, and Plasmodium genus. Results: The sensitivity and specificity for mPCR were 94.06 and 95.74, respectively. The limit of detection for mPCR was 0.1 parasites/µl. The study has shown a ROC curve area for the mPCR of 0.949 for Plasmodium genus and P. falciparum and 0.897 for P. vivax with standard nPCR. Interpretation & conclusion: The mPCR is rapid in detecting species together, cost-effective, and requires fewer human resources than the standard nPCR. Therefore, the mPCR can be used as an alternative technique for the higher sensitive detection of the malaria parasite. It could also become a vital tool for determining malaria prevalence, facilitating the application of the most effective measures.

Cardiovascular thromboembolic diseases and cancer continue to be a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Therefore, it is crucial to advance their diagnoses and treatment in the context of individualized medicine. However, the disease specificity of the currently available markers is limited. Based on analyses of a subset of peptides and matching proteins in disease vs. healthy platelets, scientists have recently shown that focused platelet proteomics enables the quantification of disease-specific biomarkers in humans. In this review, we explored the potential of accurate platelet proteomic research, which is required to identify novel diagnostic and pharmaceutical targets by comprehending the proteome variety of healthy individuals and patients for personalized and precision medicine.

Pollutants are big threat for the environment. Their imperil nature have disturbed the balance in the ecosystem and have also endangered the existence of the life on the earth. Advanced oxidation process is one of the emerging approach for the treatment of recalcitrant pollutants in nature. The process mainly involves the generation of a strong oxidant, which can easily degrade the pollutants produced from different sources. This review manifests the need of advanced oxidation process, and gives an outline of the different types of advanced oxidation process. It discusses the mechanism, advantages and disadvantages of the various forms of advanced oxidation process. Parameters for a sustainable technology such as technical and economical feasibility of the process, toxicity level and degradation effectiveness of the medium have also been discussed in detail to profess the sustainability of the process. It has potential and efficacy in removal of organic, toxic and non-biodegradable pollutants with minimum harmful effects. The future perspectives provide the room for modification and development and motivates us to overcome the present challenges and achieve better outcomes in future.

Opportunistic behavior of commensal bacteria during severe infection, especially of the intestine is always considered as a predisposing threat for the severely ill patient admitted to hospitals. A descriptive-analytical case-control study was carried out to detect the prevalence and risk factor analysis of fecal carriage of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Patients having fecal carriage of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae were considered as cases and patients who were without Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae were taken as the control in a proportion of 1:4. Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) was confirmed by both conventional as well as molecular methods. Methods such as Combined Disk Test, mCIMtest, and RAPIDEC CarbaNP Test were used for phenotypic identification of CRE, Whereas Real-Time (RT)-PCR was used for the detection of bla-gene encoded for CRE (blaNDM1, blaVIM, blaKPC, blaIMP, and blaOXA48). All patients belonging to medicine wards were included in the study. we screened 436 patients during the study and found 160 patients suitable for our study, out of which 32 (20%) were cases and 128 (80%) were controls. We found a total number of 25 genes out of 16 isolates, where NDM 1 was identified in maximum numbers followed by KPC &VIM. Standard statistical analyses such as chi-squire and odd ratios were conducted to determine the risk factor of different variables. Stepwise multiple logistic regressions were carried out, where we found, that transfer from other wards to medicine ward, use of nebulizer and intravenous catheter, and use of multiple antibiotics were still statistically significant. Implementation of Multi-modal colonization prevention and control is the need for the present situation throughout the world.

Adrenocortical disorders encompass a broad spectrum of conditions ranging from benign hyperplasia to malignant tumors, significantly disrupting hormone balance and causing a variety of clinical manifestations. By leveraging next-generation sequencing and in silico analyses, recent studies have uncovered the genetic and molecular pathways implicated in these transitions. In this review, we explored the molecular and genetic alterations in adrenocortical disorders, with a particular focus on the transitions from normal adrenal function to hyperfunction. The insights gained are intended to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, offering up-to-date knowledge for managing these complex conditions effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EVs are membranous subcellular structures originating from various cells, including platelets which consist of biomolecules that can modify the target cell’s pathophysiological functions including inflammation, cell communication, coagulation, and metastasis. EVs, which are known to allow the transmission of a wide range of molecules between cells, are gaining popularity in the fields of subcellular treatment, regenerative medicine, and drug delivery. PEVs are the most abundant EVs in circulation, being produced by platelet activation, and are considered to have a significant role in coagulation. PEV cargo is extremely diverse, containing lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and organelles depending on the condition that induced their release and can regulate a wide range of biological activities. PEVs, unlike platelets, can overcome tissue barriers, allowing platelet-derived contents to be transferred to target cells and organs that platelets cannot reach. Their isolation, characterization, and therapeutic efficacy, on the other hand, are poorly understood. This review summarizes the technical elements of PEV isolation and characterization methods as well as the pathophysiological role of PEVs, including therapeutic potential and translational possibility in diverse disciplines.

Silibinin (SBN), a sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) activator, has been evaluated for its anti-inflammatory activity in many inflammatory diseases. However, its role in diabetes-induced peripheral neuropathy (DPN) remains unknown. The SIRT1 activation convalesces nerve functions by improving mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy. DPN was induced by streptozotocin (STZ) at a dose of 55 mg/kg, i.p. in the male SD rats whereas neurotoxicity was induced in Neuro2A cells by 30 mM (high glucose) glucose. Neurobehavioural (nerve conduction velocity and nerve blood flow) western blot, immunohistochemistry, and immunocytochemistry were performed to evaluate the protein expression and their cellular localisation. Two-week SBN treatment improved neurobehavioural symptoms, SIRT1, PGC-1α, and TFAM expression in the sciatic nerve and HG insulted N2A cells. It has also maintained the mitophagy by up-regulating PARL, PINK1, PGAM5, LC3 level and provided antioxidant defence by upregulating Nrf2. SBN has shown neuroprotective potential in DPN through SIRT1 activation and antioxidant mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A fully-digital wideband joint communication-radar (JCR) with a single-input-multiple-output (SIMO) architecture at the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band will enable high joint communication and radar performance with enhanced design flexibility. A quantized receiver with few-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) will enable a practical JCR solution with reduced power consumption for futuristic portable devices and autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we present a joint communication-radar proof-of-concept platform, named JCR70, to evaluate and demonstrate the performance of these JCR systems using real channel measurements in the 71–76 GHz band. We develop this platform by extending a mmWave communication set-up with an additional full-duplex radar receiver and by capturing the SIMO JCR channel using a moving antenna on a sliding rail. To characterize the JCR performance of our developed testbed, we conduct several indoor and outdoor experiments and apply traditional as well as advanced processing algorithms on the measured data. The experimental results show that the quantized receiver with 2–4 b ADCs generally performs quite close to the high-resolution ADC for a signal-to-noise ratio of up to 5 dB. Additionally, we compare the performance of our JCR70 platform with the INRAS Radarbook, which is a state-of-the-art automotive radar evaluation platform at 77 GHz.

Glucocorticoids have been commonly used in the treatment of inflammation and immune-mediated diseases in human beings and small animals such as cats and dogs. However, excessive use can lead to Cushing’s syndrome along with several thrombotic and cardiovascular diseases. Although it is well-known that glucocorticoids exert a significant effect on coagulation, the effect of cortisol on platelet function is much less clear. Thus, we aimed to study the effects of prednisolone, one of the commonly used glucocorticoids, on the regulation of platelet function using murine platelets. We first evaluated the concentration-dependent effect of prednisolone on 2-MeSADP-induced platelet function and found that the 2-MeSADP-induced secondary wave of aggregation and dense granule secretion were completely inhibited from 500 nM prednisolone. Since 2-MeSADP-induced secretion and the resultant secondary wave of aggregation are mediated by TxA2 generation, this result suggested a role of prednisolone in platelet TxA2 generation. Consistently, prednisolone did not affect the 2-MeSADP-induced aggregation in aspirinated platelets, where the secondary wave of aggregation and secretion were blocked by eliminating the contribution of TxA2 generation by aspirin. In addition, thrombin-induced platelet aggregation and secretion were inhibited in the presence of prednisolone by inhibiting the positive-feedback effect of TxA2 generation on platelet function. Furthermore, prednisolone completely inhibited 2-MeSADP-induced TxA2 generation, confirming the role of prednisolone in TxA2 generation. Finally, Western blot analysis revealed that prednisolone significantly inhibited 2-MeSADP-induced cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) and ERK phosphorylation in non-aspirinated platelets, while only cPLA2 phosphorylation, but not ERK phosphorylation, was significantly inhibited by prednisolone in aspirinated platelets. In conclusion, prednisolone affects platelet function by the inhibition of TxA2 generation through the regulation of cPLA2 phosphorylation, thereby shedding light on its clinical characterization and treatment efficacy in dogs with hypercortisolism in the future.
