Abstract: We report new measurements of inclusive pion production from frozen-spin HD for polarized photon beams covering the Delta(1232) resonance. These provide data simultaneously on both H and D with nearly complete angular distributions of the spin-difference cross sections entering the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule. Recent results from Mainz and Bonn exceed the GDH prediction for the proton by 22 microbarns, suggesting as yet unmeasured high-energy components. Our pi0 data reveal a different angular dependence than assumed in Mainz analyses and integrate to a value that is 18 microbarns lower, suggesting a more rapid convergence. Our results for deuterium are somewhat lower than published data, considerably more precise and generally lower than available calculations., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: A search for exotic mesons in the $\pi^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ system photoproduced by the charge exchange reaction $\gamma p\to \pi^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}(n)$ was carried out by the CLAS collaboration at Jefferson Lab. A tagged-photon beam with energies in the 4.8 to 5.4 GeV range, produced through bremsstrahlung from a 5.744 GeV electron beam, was incident on a liquid-hydrogen target. A Partial Wave Analysis (PWA) was performed on a sample of 83,000 events, the highest such statistics to date in this reaction at these energies. The main objective of this study was to look for the photoproduction of an exotic $J^{PC} = 1^{-+}$ resonant state in the 1 to 2 GeV mass range. Our PWA analysis, based on the isobar model, shows production of the $a_{2}(1320)$ and the $\pi_{2}(1670)$ mesons, but no evidence for the $a_{1}(1260)$, nor the $\pi_{1}(1600)$ exotic state at the expected levels. An upper limit of 13.5 nb is determined for the exotic $\pi_1(1600)$ cross section, less than 2% of the $a_2(1320)$ production., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, to be submitted to Phys.Rev.Lett

Abstract: We report new measurements of inclusive pi production from frozen-spin HD for polarized photon beams covering the Delta(1232) resonance. These provide data simultaneously on both H and D with nearly complete angular distributions of the spin-difference cross sections entering the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule. Recent results from Mainz and Bonn exceed the GDH prediction for the proton by 22 mu b, suggesting as yet unmeasured high-energy components. Our pi(0) data reveal a different angular dependence than assumed in Mainz analyses and integrate to a value that is 18 mu b lower, suggesting a more rapid convergence. Our results for deuterium are somewhat lower than published data, considerably more precise, and generally lower than available calculations.

Abstract: The neutron elastic magnetic form factor was extracted from quasielastic electron scattering on deuterium over the range Q(2)=1.0-4.8 GeV2 with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. High precision was achieved with a ratio technique and a simultaneous in situ calibration of the neutron detection efficiency. Neutrons were detected with electromagnetic calorimeters and time-of-flight scintillators at two beam energies. The dipole parametrization gives a good description of the data.

Abstract: The helicity amplitudes of the electroexcitation of the Roper resonance are extracted for 1.7 < Q(2)< 4.5 GeV2 from recent high precision JLab-CLAS cross section and longitudinally polarized beam asymmetry data for pi(+) electroproduction on protons at W=1.15-1.69 GeV. The analysis is made using two approaches, dispersion relations and a unitary isobar model, which give consistent Q(2) behavior of the helicity amplitudes for the gamma(*)p -> N(1440)P-11 transition. It is found that the transverse helicity amplitude A(1/2), which is large and negative at Q(2)=0, becomes large and positive at Q(2)similar or equal to 2 GeV2, and then drops slowly with Q(2). The longitudinal helicity amplitude S-1/2, which was previously found from CLAS ep -> ep pi(0),en pi(+) data to be large and positive at Q(2)=0.4,0.65 GeV2, drops with Q(2). Available model predictions for gamma(*)p -> N(1440)P-11 allow us to conclude that these results provide strong evidence in favor of N(1440)P-11 as a first radial excitation of the 3q ground state. The results of the present paper also confirm the conclusion of our previous analysis for Q(2)< 1 GeV2 that the presentation of N(1440)P-11 as a q(3)G hybrid state is ruled out.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to p \pi^0$ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV. The results reported here possess greater accuracy in the absolute normalization than previous measurements. They disagree with recent CB-ELSA measurements for the process at forward scattering angles. Agreement with the SAID and MAID fits is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been extended to 3 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations., Comment: 18 pages, 48 figures

Abstract: PHASE; We report a new measurement of the exclusive electroproduction reaction gamma* p -> pi0 p to explore the evolution from soft non-perturbative physics to hard processes via the Q2 dependence of the magnetic (M1+), electric (E1+) and scalar (S1+) multipoles in the N to Delta transition. 9000 differential cross section data points cover W from threshold to 1.4 eV/c2, 4pi center-of-mass solid angle, and Q2 from 3 to 6 GeV2/c2, the highest yet achieved. It is found that the magnetic form factor G*M decreases with Q2 more steeply than the proton magnetic form factor, the ratio E1+/M1+ is small and negative, indicating strong helicity non-conservation, and the ratio S1+/M1+ is negative, while its magnitude increases with Q2.

Since the use of the first target in-beam in November 2001, dramatic improvements have been made to the in-beam and transfer cryostats and the NMR circuit has been redesigned and is well understood.

Abstract: The electromagnetic decays of the Sig0(1385) and Lambda(1520) hyperons were studied in photon-induced reactions gamma p -> K+ Lambda(1116)gamma in the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. We report the first observation of the radiative decay of the Sig0(1385) and a measurement of the Lambda(1520) radiative decay width. For the Sig0(1385) -> Lambda(1116)gamma transition, we measured a partial width of 479+/-120(stat)+81-100(sys) keV, larger than all of the existing model predictions. For the Lambda(1520) -> Lambda(1116)gamma transition, we obtained a partial width of 167+/-43(stat)+26-12(sys) keV., 15 pages, 19 eps figures, revtex4, accepted for publication Phys. Rev. C. Abstract: The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function $\sigma_{LT^\prime}$ has been measured using the $p(\vec e,e'\pi^+)n$ reaction in the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance region at $Q^2=0.40$ and 0.65 GeV$^2$. No previous $\sigma_{LT^\prime}$ data exist for this reaction channel. The kinematically complete experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally polarized electrons at an energy of 1.515 GeV. A partial wave analysis of the data shows generally better agreement with recent phenomenological models of pion electroproduction compared to the previously measured $\pi^0 p$ channel. A fit to both $\pi^0 p$ and $\pi^+ n$ channels using a unitary isobar model suggests the unitarized Born terms provide a consistent description of the non-resonant background. Abstract: PHASE; The three-body photodisintegration of 3He has been measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, using tagged photons of energies between 0.35 GeV and 1.55 GeV. The large acceptance of the spectrometer allowed us for the first time to cover a wide momentum and angular range for the two outgoing protons. Three kinematic regions dominated by either two- or three-body contributions have been distinguished and analyzed. The measured cross sections have been compared with results of a theoretical model, which, in certain kinematic ranges, have been found to be in reasonable agreement with the data.

Abstract: Double-polarization asymmetries for inclusive ep scattering were measured at Jefferson Lab using 2.6 and 4.3 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons incident on a longitudinally polarized NH3 target in the CLAS detector. The polarized structure function g(1)(x,Q2) was extracted throughout the nucleon resonance region and into the deep inelastic regime, for Q(2)=0.15-1.64 GeV2. The contributions to the first moment Gamma(1)(Q2)= integral g(1)(x,Q2) dx were determined up to Q(2)=1.2 GeV2. Using a parametrization for g(1) in the unmeasured low x regions, the complete first moment was estimated over this Q2 region. A rapid change in Gamma(1) is observed for Q21 GeV2, with a sign change near Q(2)=0.3 GeV2, indicating dominant contributions from the resonance region. At Q(2)=1.2 GeV2 our data are below the perturbative QCD evolved scaling value.

Abstract: A new polarized target using HD in the solid phase has been developed for studies of the nucleon spin structure at Q(2) = 0 using pion photo-production. In combination with the high quality LEGS photon beam and a large solid angle spectrometer this target allows practically background-free measurements on the proton and on the neutron. The first beam-target double-polarization data taken with this target are reported here.

Abstract: Models of baryon structure predict a small quadrupole deformation of the nucleon due to residual tensor forces between quarks or distortions from the pion cloud. Sensitivity to quark versus pion degrees of freedom occurs through the Q2 dependence of the magnetic (M1+), electric (E1+), and scalar (S1+) multipoles in the gamma*p--Delta(+)--p pi(0) transition. We report new experimental values for the ratios E(1+)/M(1+) and S(1+)/M(1+) over the range Q2 = 0.4-1.8 GeV2, extracted from precision p(e,e(')p)pi(0) data using a truncated multipole expansion. Results are best described by recent unitary models in which the pion cloud plays a dominant role.

Abstract: New cross sections for the reaction e p -> ep eta are reported for total center of mass energy W = 1.5--1.86 GeV and invariant momentum transfer Q^2 = 0.25--1.5 GeV^2. This large kinematic range allows extraction of important new information about response functions, photocouplings, and eta N coupling strengths of baryon resonances. Expanded W coverage shows sharp structure at W \~ 1.7 GeV; this is shown to come from interference between S and P waves and can be interpreted in terms of known resonances. Improved values are derived for the photon coupling amplitude for the S11(1535) resonance.
