Abstract

We propose a high order numerical scheme for time-dependent first order Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equations. In particular we propose to combine a semi-Lagrangian scheme with a Central Weighted Non-Oscillatory reconstruction. We prove a convergence result in the case of state- and time-independent Hamiltonians. Numerical simulations are presented in space dimensions one and two, also for more general state- and time-dependent Hamiltonians, demonstrating superior performance in terms of CPU time gain compared with a semi-Lagrangian scheme coupled with Weighted Non-Oscillatory reconstructions.

Abstract

Background COVID-19 pandemic presented an unexpected challenge for the surgical community in general and Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) specialists in particular. This document aims to summarize recent evidence and experts’ opinion and formulate recommendations to guide the surgical community on how to best organize the recovery plan for surgical activity across different sub-specialities after the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Recommendations were developed through a Delphi process for establishment of expert consensus. Domain topics were formulated and subsequently subdivided into questions pertinent to different surgical specialities following the COVID-19 crisis. Sixty-five experts from 24 countries, representing the entire EAES board, were invited. Fifty clinicians and six engineers accepted the invitation and drafted statements based on specific key questions. Anonymous voting on the statements was performed until consensus was achieved, defined by at least 70% agreement. Results A total of 92 consensus statements were formulated with regard to safe resumption of surgery across eight domains, addressing general surgery, upper GI, lower GI, bariatrics, endocrine, HPB, abdominal wall and technology/research. The statements addressed elective and emergency services across all subspecialties with specific attention to the role of MIS during the recovery plan. Eighty-four of the statements were approved during the first round of Delphi voting (91.3%) and another 8 during the following round after substantial modification, resulting in a 100% consensus. Conclusion The recommendations formulated by the EAES board establish a framework for resumption of surgery following COVID-19 pandemic with particular focus on the role of MIS across surgical specialities. The statements have the potential for wide application in the clinical setting, education activities and research work across different healthcare systems.

Abstract

Our study shows craniofacial morphological abnormalities in Turner syndrome by analyzing linear and angular variables calculated on cephalometry. Craniofacial aberrant aspects are found in reduction of the posterior base of the skull, mandibular and maxillary shortening, mandibular and maxillary retrusion. The values obtained by us are within the specific profile of this pathology, also reported to the specialized studies in the field, even if we were limited by the small number of cases, but we can affirm the importance of cephalometry in highlighting the craniofacial morphological features in Turner syndrome.

Abstract

The nut crops are important for their valuable fruits and for their potential to increase the economic growth of Romania. The Southern part of Romania which includes the regions of Oltenia and Muntenia is known for its favourable conditions for fruit growing and in particular for nut crops like walnut, hazelnut and sweet chestnut. During the last two decades at University of Craiova - SCDP Vâlcea several cultivars trials were set up in order to compare the Romanian and foreign cultivars and to establish the most favourable ones for culture in this part of the country. This study presents the behaviour of 19 walnut cultivars (9 Romanian ones and 10 of foreignorigin), 19 hazelnut cultivars (8 Romanian and 11 foreign ones) and 11 cultivars and hybrids of sweet chestnut (3 Romanian and 8 of foreign origin). Due to the results obtained several cultivars of walnut, hazelnut and sweet chestnut are recommended to be propagated and planted into the orchards from southern part of Romania.

Abstract

Modern dental practice involves many procedures that aim to reduce stress for the patient and, at the same time, increase comfort for the dentist. On this wise, the rubber dam has been available in the dental field for over 150 years. Although its advantages are indisputable and it is an essential condition for the success of endodontic treatment, in the literature there is a lot of information that the rubber dam is not usually used by dentists in endodontic treatments. There are many unsustainable reasons for not using it: high-cost price, non-acceptance of the patient, increased time for application, etc. Because the dam is not used, negative results can be observed, the endangerment by aspiration or swallowing of tools, materials and solutions, the spread of microorganisms through aerosols and even the transmission of diseases.

Abstract

In the economic context created by the acceleration of global warming and globalization phenomena the operation of the power systems becomes more and more intricate and challenging, leading to an electricity market more complex and risky. The decisional process must be faster and the financial consequences may be very significant, thus a risk analysis is the most appropriate tool to identify the best set of decisions. In this paper, we propose the SMARTRADE software platform designed as a market simulator for the participants (mainly producers and suppliers or retailers) on the electricity market. A brief description of the facilities and options provided by the market simulator from the risks perspectives persuades the reader to go deeper into knowledge of this software.

Abstract

Nowadays, it is exceedingly difficult for a market player to decide what the best combination of offers (prices/volumes) is, considering the multiple possibilities (electricity markets) available. The authors of this paper developed a simulator of the potential transactions on the main electricity markets, as a form of support for the identification of the optimal solution. The design of the simulator is based on the structure of the Romanian electricity market, recognized as representative for the European Union member states. The paper briefly presents the modules of the simulator, highlighting the required input data, recommendations, analysis capabilities, reporting, and editing facilities.
