The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. 4. Effects of a magnetic field on the fragile antiferromagnetism in YbBiPt

We present neutron diffraction data for the cubic-heavy-fermion YbBiPt that show broad magnetic diffraction peaks due to the fragile short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order persist under an applied magnetic-field $\mathbf{H}$. Our results for $\mathbf{H}\perp[\bar{1}~1~0]$ and a temperature of $T=0.14(1)$ K show that the $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{3}{2})$ magnetic diffraction peak can be described by the same two-peak lineshape found for $\mu_{0}H=0$ T below the N\'{e}el temperature of $T_{\text{N}}=0.4$ K. Both components of the peak exist for $\mu_{0}H\lesssim1.4 T$, which is well past the AFM phase boundary determined from our new resistivity data. Using neutron diffraction data taken at $T=0.13(2)$ K for $\mathbf{H}\parallel[0~0~1]$ or $[1~1~0]$, we show that domains of short-range AFM order change size throughout the previously determined AFM and non-Fermi liquid regions of the phase diagram, and that the appearance of a magnetic diffraction peak at $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ at $\mu_{0}H\approx0.4$ T signals canting of the ordered magnetic moment away from $[1~1~1]$. The continued broadness of the magnetic diffraction peaks under a magnetic field and their persistence across the AFM phase boundary established by detailed transport and thermodynamic experiments present an interesting quandary concerning the nature of YbBiPt's electronic ground state., Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures

- Abstract
IntroductionMore than 30 million adults are released from incarceration globally each year. Many experience complex physical and mental health problems, and are at markedly increased risk of preventable mortality. Despite this, evidence regarding the global epidemiology of mortality following release from incarceration is insufficient to inform the development of targeted, evidence-based responses. Many previous studies have suffered from inadequate power and poor precision, and even large studies have limited capacity to disaggregate data by specific causes of death, sub-populations or time since release to answer questions of clinical and public health relevance.ObjectivesTo comprehensively document the incidence, timing, causes and risk factors for mortality in adults released from prison.MethodsWe created the Mortality After Release from Incarceration Consortium (MARIC), a multi-disciplinary collaboration representing 29 cohorts of adults who have experienced incarceration from 11 countries. Findings across cohorts will be analysed using a two-step, individual participant data meta-analysis methodology.ResultsThe combined sample includes 1,337,993 individuals (89% male), with 75,795 deaths recorded over 9,191,393 person-years of follow-up.ConclusionsThe consortium represents an important advancement in the field, bringing international attention to this problem. - Abstract
The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. This scheme required a complete revision of the computing model and rewriting of the experiment's software.

Using inelastic neutron scattering, we show that the onset of superconductivity in underdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ coincides with a crossover from well-defined spin waves to overdamped and diffusive spin excitations. This crossover occurs despite the presence of long-range stripe antiferromagnetic order for samples in a compositional range from x=0.04-0.055, and is a consequence of the shrinking spin-density wave gap and a corresponding increase in the particle-hole (Landau) damping. The latter effect is captured by a simple itinerant model relating Co doping to changes in the hot spots of the Fermi surface. We argue that the overdamped spin fluctuations provide a pairing mechanism for superconductivity in these materials.

We report results from neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of YbBiPt that demonstrate antiferromagnetic order characterized by a propagation vector, $\tau_{\rm{AFM}}$ = ($\frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2}$), and ordered moments that align along the [1 1 1] direction of the cubic unit cell. We describe the scattering in terms of a two-Gaussian peak fit, which consists of a narrower component that appears below $T_{\rm{N}}~\approx 0.4$ K and corresponds to a magnetic correlation length of $\xi_{\rm{n}} \approx$ 80 $\rm{\AA}$, and a broad component that persists up to $T^*\approx$ 0.7 K and corresponds to antiferromagnetic correlations extending over $\xi_{\rm{b}} \approx$ 20 $\rm{\AA}$. Our results illustrate the fragile magnetic order present in YbBiPt and provide a path forward for microscopic investigations of the ground states and fluctuations associated with the purported quantum critical point in this heavy-fermion compound., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The relationship between antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and superconductivity has become a central topic of research in studies of superconductivity in the iron pnictides. We present unambiguous evidence of the absence of magnetic fluctuations in the non-superconducting collapsed tetragonal phase of CaFe2As2 via inelastic neutron scattering time-of-flight data, which is consistent with the view that spin fluctuations are a necessary ingredient for unconventional superconductivity in the iron pnictides. We report the effect of applied pressures on magnetic and superconducting order in single crystals of the aliovalent La-doped iron pnictide material Ca$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. Using electrical transport, elastic neutron scattering and resonant tunnel diode oscillator measurements on samples under both quasi-hydrostatic and hydrostatic pressure conditions, we report a series of phase diagrams spanning the range of substitution concentrations for both antiferromagnetic and superconducting ground states that include pressure-tuning through the antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical point. Our results indicate that the observed superconducting phase with maximum transition temperature of $T_{c}$=47 K is intrinsic to these materials, appearing only upon suppression of magnetic order by pressure tuning through the AFM critical point. In contrast to all other intermetallic iron-pnictide superconductors with the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure, this superconducting phase appears to exist only exclusively from the antiferromagnetic phase in a manner similar to the oxygen- and fluorine-based iron-pnictide superconductors with the highest transition temperatures reported to date. The unusual dichotomy between lower-$T_{c}$ systems with coexistent superconductivity and magnetism and the tendency for the highest-$T_{c}$ systems to show non-coexistence provides an important insight into the distinct transition temperature limits in different members of the iron-based superconductor family.

We present detailed temperature and field dependent data obtained from magnetization, resistivity, heat capacity, Hall resistivity and thermoelectric power measurements performed on single crystals of CeZn11. The compounds orders antiferromagnetically at $\sim$ 2 K. The zero-field resistivity and TEP data show features characteristic of a Ce-based intermetallic with crystal electric field splitting and possible correlated, Kondo lattice effects. We constructed the T-H phase diagram for the magnetic field applied along the easy, [110], direction which shows that the magnetic field required to suppress T_N below 0.4 K is in the range of 45-47.5 kOe. A linear behavior of the rho(T) data, H||[110], was observed only for H=45 kOe for 0.46 K

A combined neutron and x-ray diffraction study of TbBaFe2O5 reveals a rare checkerboard to charge ordering transition. TbBaFe2O5 is a mixed valent compound where Fe2+/Fe3+ ions are known to arrange into a stripe charge-ordered state below TV = 291 K, that consists of alternating Fe2+/Fe3+ stripes in the basal plane running along the b direction. Our measurements reveal that the stripe charge-ordering is preceded by a checkerboard charge-ordered phase between TV < T < T* = 308 K. The checkerboard ordering is stabilized by inter-site coulomb interactions which give way to a stripe state stabilized by orbital ordering., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ba(Fe0.925Mn0.075)2As2 manifest spin fluctuations at two different wavevectors in the Fe square lattice, (1/2,0) and (1/2,1/2), corresponding to the expected stripe spin-density wave order and checkerboard antiferromagnetic order, respectively. Below T_N=80 K, long-range stripe magnetic ordering occurs and sharp spin wave excitations appear at (1/2,0) while broad and diffusive spin fluctuations remain at (1/2,1/2) at all temperatures. The spin fluctuation spectra from nonsuperconducting Cu-substituted, and superconducting Co-substituted, BaFe2As2 are compared quantitatively by inelastic neutron scattering measurements and are found to be indis- tinguishable. Whereas diffraction studies show the appearance of incommensurate spin-density wave order in Co and Ni substituted samples, the magnetic phase diagram for Cu substitution does not display incommensu- rate order, demonstrating that simple electron counting based on rigid-band concepts is invalid. Neutron diffraction studies of Ba(Fe[1-x]Co[x])2As2 reveal that commensurate antiferromagnetic order gives way to incommensurate magnetic order for Co compositions between 0.056 < x < 0.06. The incommensurability has the form of a small transverse splitting (0, +-e, 0) from the nominal commensurate antiferromagnetic propagation vector Q[AFM] = (1, 0, 1) (in orthorhombic notation) where e = 0.02-0.03 and is composition dependent. We have found a remarkably large response of the transition temperature of CaFe2As2 single crystals grown out of excess FeAs to annealing / quenching temperature. Whereas crystals that are annealed at 400 C exhibit a first order phase transition from a high temperature tetragonal to a low temperature orthorhombic and antiferromagnetic state near 170 K, crystals that have been quenched from 960 C exhibit a transition from a high temperature tetragonal phase to a low temperature, non-magnetic, collapsed tetragonal phase below 100 K. By use of temperature dependent electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements we have been able to demonstrate that the transition temperature can be reduced in a monotonic fashion by varying the annealing / quenching temperature from 400 to 850 C with the low temperature state remaining antiferromagnetic for transition temperatures larger than 100 K and becoming collapsed tetragonal / non-magnetic for transition temperatures below 90 K. This suppression of the orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic phase transition and its ultimate replacement with the collapsed tetragonal / non-magnetic phase is similar to what has been observed for CaFe2As2 under hydrostatic pressure. Transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that there is a temperature dependent, width of formation of CaFe2As2 with a decreasing amount of excess Fe and As being soluble in the single crystal at lower annealing temperatures. For samples quenched from 960 C there is a fine (of order 10 nm), semi-uniform distribution of precipitate that can be associated with an average strain field whereas for samples annealed at 400 C the excess Fe and As form mesoscopic grains that induce little strain throughout the CaFe2As2 lattice.

Neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements demonstrate that, unlike for the electron-doped compounds, the structural and magnetic transitions remain coincident in temperature. Both the magnetic and structural transitions are gradually suppressed with increased Ru concentration and coexist with superconductivity. Neutron and x-ray diffraction studies of Ba(Fe{1-x}Mn{x})2As2 for low doping concentrations (x <= 0.176) reveal that at a critical concentration, 0.102 < x < 0.118, the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition abruptly disappears whereas magnetic ordering with a propagation vector of (1/2 1/2 1) persists. Among all of the iron arsenides this observation is unique to Mn-doping, and unexpected because all models for "stripe-like" antiferromagnetic order anticipate an attendant orthorhombic distortion due to magnetoelastic effects. Inelastic neutron scattering from superconducting (SC) Ba(Fe$_{0.926}$Co$_{0.074}$)$_2$As$_2$ reveals anisotropic and quasi-two-dimensional (2D) magnetic excitations close to \textbf{Q}$_{\texttt{AFM}}=({1}{2}/{1}{2})$ - the 2D antiferromagnetic (AFM) wave-vector of the parent BaFe$_2$As$_2$ compound. The correlation length anisotropy of these low energy fluctuations is consistent with spin nematic correlations in the $J_1$-$J_2$ model with $J_1/J_2 \sim$ 1. The spin resonance at $\sim$8.3 meV in the SC state displays the same anisotropy. Neutron diffraction and high-resolution x-ray diffraction studies find that, similar to the closely related underdoped Ba(Fe[1-x]Cox)2As2 superconducting compounds, Ba(Fe0.961Rh0.039)2As2 shows strong evidence of competition and coexistence between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order below the superconducting transition, Tc = 14 K. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on underdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 4.7%) where superconductivity and long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order coexist. The broad magnetic spectrum found in the normal state develops into a magnetic resonance feature below TC that has appreciable dispersion along c-axis with a bandwidth of 3-4 meV. This is in contrast to the optimally doped x = 8.0% composition, with no long-range AFM order, where the resonance exhibits a much weaker dispersion [see Lumsden et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 107005 (2009)]. The results suggest that the resonance dispersion arises from interlayer spin correlations present in the AFM ordered state.

Magnetic correlations in the paramagnetic phase of CaFe2As2 (T_N=172 K) have been examined by means of inelastic neutron scattering from 180 K (~ 1.05 T_N) up to 300 K (~1.8 T_N). Despite the first-order nature of the magnetic ordering, strong but short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations are clearly observed. These correlations, which consist of quasi-elastic scattering centered at the wavevector Q_{AFM} of the low-temperature AFM structure, are observed up to the highest measured temperature of 300 K and at high energy transfer (E> 60 meV). The L dependence of the scattering implies rather weak interlayer coupling in the tetragonal c-direction corresponding to nearly two-dimensional fluctuations in the (ab) plane. The spin correlation lengths within the Fe layer are found to be anisotropic, consistent with underlying fluctuations of the AFM stripe structure. Similar to the cobalt doped superconducting BaFe2As2 compounds, these experimental features can be adequately reproduced by a scattering model that describes short-range anisotropic spin correlations with overdamped spin dynamics., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, article

We use magnetic long range order as a tool to probe the Cooper pair wave function in the iron arsenide superconductors. We show theoretically that antiferromagnetism and superconductivity can coexist in these materials only if Cooper pairs form an unconventional, sign-changing state. The observation of coexistence in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ then demonstrates unconventional pairing in this material. The detailed agreement between theory and neutron diffraction experiments, in particular for the unusual behavior of the magnetic order below $T_{c}$, demonstrates the robustness of our conclusions. Single crystal neutron and high-energy x-ray diffraction have identified the phase lines corresponding to transitions between the ambient-pressure tetragonal (T), the antiferromagnetic orthorhombic (O) and the non-magnetic collapsed tetragonal (cT) phases of CaFe2As2. We find no evidence of additional structures for pressures up to 2.5 GPa (at 300 K). Both the T-cT and O-cT transitions exhibit significant hysteresis effects and we demonstrate that coexistence of the O and cT phases can occur if a non-hydrostatic component of pressure is present. Measurements of the magnetic diffraction peaks show no change in the magnetic structure or ordered moment as a function of pressure in the O phase and we find no evidence of magnetic ordering in the cT phase. There is growing interest in policies, programs and tariffs that encourage customer loads to provide demand response (DR) to help discipline wholesale electricity markets. Proposals at the retail level range from eliminating fixed rate tariffs as the default service for some or all customer groups to reinstituting utility-sponsored load management programs with market-based inducements to curtail. Alternative rate designs include time-of-use (TOU), day-ahead real-time pricing (RTP), critical peak pricing, and even pricing usage at real-time market balancing prices. Some Independent System Operators (ISOs) have implemented their own DR programs whereby load curtailment capabilities are treated as a system resource and are paid an equivalent value. The resulting load reductions from these tariffs and programs provide a variety of benefits, including limiting the ability of suppliers to increase spot and long-term market-clearing prices above competitive levels (Neenan et al., 2002; Borenstein, 2002; Ruff, 2002). Unfortunately, there is little information in the public domain to characterize and quantify how customers actually respond to these alternative dynamic pricing schemes. A few empirical studies of large customer RTP response have shown modest results for most customers, with a few very price-responsive customers providing most of the aggregate response (Herriges et al., 1993; Schwarz et al., 2002). However, these studies examined response to voluntary, two-part RTP programs implemented by utilities in states without retail competition.1 Furthermore, the researchers had limited information on customer characteristics so they were unable to identify the drivers to price response. In the absence of a compelling characterization of why customers join RTP programs and how they respond to prices, many initiatives to modernize retail electricity rates seem to be stymied.

- Abstract
Background & Aims: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) has been well characterised and codified through the development of diagnostic criteria. These criteria have been adapted and simplified and are widely used in clinical practice. However, there is a need to update and precisely define the criteria for both treatment response and treatment. Methods: A systematic review was performed and a modified Delphi consensus process was used to identify and redefine the response criteria in autoimmune hepatitis. Results: The consensus process initiated by the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group proposes that the term ‘complete biochemical response’ defined as ‘normalization of serum transaminases and IgG below the upper limit of normal’ be adopted to include a time point at 6 months after initiation of treatment. An insufficient response by 6 months was a failure to meet the above definition. Non-response was defined as ‘<50% decrease of serum transaminases within 4 weeks after initiation of treatment’. Remission is defined as liver histology with a Hepatitis Activity Index <4/18. Intolerance to treatment was agreed to stand for ‘any adverse event possibly related to treatment leading to potential drug discontinuation’. Conclusions: These definitions provide a simple and reproducible framework to define treatment response and non-response, irrespective of the therapeutic intervention. A consensus on endpoints is urgently required to set a global standard for the reporting of study results and to enable inter-study comparisons. Future prospective database studies are needed to validate these endpoints. Lay summary: Consensus among international experts on response criteria and endpoints in autoimmune hepatitis is lacking. - Abstract
In this account a model of communicative functions is used in an attempt to clarify the nature of mixed mode learning delivery. Formulated in research on communication in written mode, the model can be seen to offer insights into the nature of hypermedia communication, as well as helping to identify some key features of effective mixed mode course design. The model also suggests that blended learning should be viewed as a multiplicity of combinations rather than "middle ground" in a continuum of wholesale adoption or rejection of ICT. The tentative hypotheses outlined in this paper are illustrated with reference to doctoral research on communication in written mode and reflective monitoring of mixed mode courses run at the Durban University of Technology from 2002-2006.
