Little is known about the genetic architecture of antifungal immunity in natural populations. Using two population genetic approaches, quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and evolve and resequence (E&R), we explored D. melanogaster immune defense against infection with the fungus Beauveria bassiana. The immune defense was highly variable both in the recombinant inbred lines from the Drosophila Synthetic Population Resource used for our QTL mapping and in the synthetic outbred populations used in our E&R study. Survivorship of infection improved dramatically over just 10 generations in the E&R study, and continued to increase for an additional nine generations, revealing a trade-off with uninfected longevity. Populations selected for increased defense against B. bassiana evolved cross resistance to a second, distinct B. bassiana strain but not to bacterial pathogens. The QTL mapping study revealed that sexual dimorphism in defense depends on host genotype, and the E&R study indicated that sexual dimorphism also depends on the specific pathogen to which the host is exposed. Both the QTL mapping and E&R experiments generated lists of potentially causal candidate genes, although these lists were nonoverlapping.

In many animal species, females and males differ in physiology, lifespan, and immune function. The magnitude and direction of the sexual dimorphism in immune function varies greatly and the genetic and mechanistic bases for this dimorphism are often unknown. Here we show that Drosophila melanogaster females are more likely than males to die from infection with several strains of the fungal entomopathogen Beauveria bassiana. The sexual dimorphism is not exclusively due to barrier defenses and persists when flies are inoculated by injection as well as by surface exposure. Loss of function mutations of Toll pathway genes remove the dimorphism in survivorship. Surprisingly, loss of function mutation of relish, a gene in the Imd pathway, also removes the dimorphism, but the dimorphism persists in flies carrying other Imd pathway mutations. The robust sexual dimorphism in D. melanogaster survival to B. bassiana presents opportunities to further dissect its mechanistic details, with applications for biological control of insect vectors of human disease and insect crop pests.

Internet of Things (IoT) is an associate in nursing an ever-growing network of smart and functional objects. It refers to the physical objects capable of exchanging information with alternative physical objects. Nowadays, safety and security have always become a necessity for urban society. Our project proposes a security system for the IoT environment that prevents intrusion in Home, Bank, Airports, Offices, University, or any location with the security system. The primary goal of our project is to reduce human work by designing and implementing a security system that offers control through a handheld mobile phone and PC by employing IoT and cloud-based services to manage the cost of the setup. To detect malicious activity or privacy violation, we propose an Unauthorized Human Entry Detection system (UHEDS), which detect any intrusion or breach and typically report to the homeowner. The project includes an Anomalybased technique for unauthorized entry detection and signature analysis using face recognition algorithm running on AWS cloud to differentiate between an authorized person and intruder and thus improving accuracy in authorizing the legitimate person and provide access to the private/personal zone, thereby reducing risk of sending false alerts/alarms.

Clinical features of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) worsens when it involves kidneys. Even then in our socioeconomic context the patients who seek admission are usually at later stages. Moreover histological classes may not be previewed by clinical and laboratory features. The aim of the study is to show variation of clinical features and laboratory findings in relation to pathological classes of Lupus nephritis. It was a cross sectional descriptive study enrolling 30 female patients admitted in medicine and nephrology department of Chittagong Medical College. Majority of the patients are of age range 21-40 years (73%); belonging to middle class family (90%) and educated upto level of secondary school certificate (43%). Oedema (93%), normotension (73%) and anaemia (93%) are common clinical features. Though all patients had macroscopic proteinuria only 20 % patients had massive proteinuria (>3gm%). Serologically Nineteen patients are ANA positive (63%) and all patients had Anti-dsDNA positivity. Class III and Class IV comprises 70% of patients. Estimated Glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is more in class V ( mean 77.77) and class III (mean 76.86) than class II ( mean 52.67) and class IV ( mean 59.95) signifying eGFR cannot estimate severity. In conclusion without renal biopsy Lupus nephritis class cannot be ascertained and so class specific management cannot be given. JCMCTA 2012 ; 23 (2): 34-37
