Abstract

Adsorption is a promising technique for the removal of persistent contaminants, since it is a relatively cheap process with low energy requirements and does not produce secondary contamination. However, the large-scale implementation of an adsorption process usually involves a dual column process for either pressure swing or temperature swing operations. Therefore, the reusability of adsorbents is a key characteristic to consider and evaluate but is often overlooked during the development of new materials. To be reused, the adsorbent should successfully release the contaminant by a desorption or regeneration step without compromising the chemical and physical stability of the matrix. The efficiency of desorption/regeneration methods depends greatly on the chemical characteristics of the contaminants, the nature of the adsorbents, and the adsorption mechanisms responsible for the adsorbent–adsorbate interactions. This review focuses on the desorption strategies that have been used for the regeneration of biobased hydrogels and hydrogel composites, materials that have been successfully applied in the adsorption of wastewater contaminants. The strategies can be divided into chemical and physical methods. The chemical methods include the use of desorption agents, photocatalytic oxidation, and CO₂ bubbling; and the physical methods include thermal and ultrasonic treatments. These regeneration strategies have shown different efficiencies as well as specific advantages and drawbacks that need to be considered to select the most suitable method for a specific application.

Abstract

A strategic vision to ensure an adequate, safe and secure drinking water supply presents a challenge, particularly for such a small country as Jordan, faced with a critical supply-demand imbalance and a high risk of water quality deterioration. In order to provide sustainable and equitable long-term water management plans for the future, current and future demands, along with available adaptation options should be assessed through community engagement. An analysis of available water resources, existing demands and use per sector served to assess the nation’s historic water status. Taking into account the effect of both population growth and rainfall reduction, future per sector demands were predicted by linear temporal trend analysis. Water sector vulnerability and adaptation options were assessed by engaging thirty five stakeholders. A set of weighed-criterions were selected, adopted, modified, and then framed into comprehensive guidelines. A quantitative ratio-level approach was used to quantify the magnitude and likelihood of risks and opportunities associated with each proposed adaptation measure using the level of effectiveness and severity status. Prioritization indicated that public awareness and training programs were the most feasible and effective adaptation measures, while building new infrastructure was of low priority. Associated barriers were related to a lack of financial resources, institutional arrangements, and data collection, sharing, availability, consistency and transparency, as well as willingness to adapt. Independent community-based watershed-vulnerability analyses to address water integrity at watershed scale are recommended.

50. Evaluation of electric arc furnace slag as a potential phosphate-removal substrate

Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate the performance of locally available electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) as a substrate for removing phosphorus from wastewater. First, in a laboratory study, EAFS was found to have high phosphorus removal efficiency for three P concentrations (0.3, 3.0, and 6.0 mg/L); this resulted in nearly 100% phosphorus removal in 24 h. Next, the experiment was repeated using aeration and similar phosphorus removal was observed but in a shorter contact time of 1 h. The adsorption capacity of EAFS was determined to be 1,458 mg/kg. In a pilot-scale study, over 90% P removal took place in the first 4 h under nonaerated conditions, and nearly 100% removal in 8 h. While the P removal with aeration was relatively less initially for the shorter residence times, a 100% removal was observed for the 24-h residence time.
