Impacts of energy retrofits on IAQ were studied in two European countries, Finland and Lithuania. Air change rates were estimated based on air flows measured through ventilation outlets and 24-hour monitoring of CO2 concentrations before and after various energy retrofits in multi-family buildings. The air change rates (ACR) after retrofits were higher in apartments with mechanical ventilation in Finland. The ACR after retrofits were smaller in all study groups in Lithuania, yet noticeably smaller in apartments with mixed ventilation. CO2 concentrations in all study groups in Finland were lower than in Lithuania. Also, some decrease in CO2 concentrations was noticed after retrofits in Finland, whereas an opposite trend was observed in Lithuania. In conclusion, impacts of energy retrofits were mainly marginally positive in Finland and mainly negative in Lithuania. Positive impacts were typically noticed in apartments with mechanical ventilation and "good" IAQ before retrofits. On contrary, negative impacts were noticed in apartments with natural ventilation and "adequate" IAQ. It was concluded that IAQ should be assessed before and after retrofits. publishedVersion

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are a relatively new alternative to conventional cigarettes and the prevalence of use is increasing amongst smokers worldwide. This raises new questions for example on the potential impact of e-cigarette use on indoor air quality and bystander exposures; evidence on this topic is still emerging. To that end, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of different factors on the dispersion of exhaled e-cigarette particles at a bystander’s position, namely vaping topography, distance from bystander and room ventilation rate, following use of a commercial e-cigarette.

The first aim of this study was to characterise total and size-fractionated particulate matter (PM) aerosol, including fibres, released from the processing operations of cement roofing slates. The second aim was to compare particle emissions from asbestos-cement and non-asbestos cement sheets, with respect to total and size-fractionated particulate matter as well as fibres emissions. Asbestos and cellulose-based cement sheets were compared during slate treatment processes, namely crushing, rubbing, rasping and scrubbing. Generated PM and fibres were classified by a variety of methods (PM2.5 and PM10 cyclones, aerodynamic particle spectrometer and optical particle counter). A substantial variation in the mass of generated particles has been noticed, both within each PM fraction and between different treatment processes. The PM10/PMtotal concentration ratio ranged from 70 to 98% and PM2.5/PMtotal ratio equalled to w20%. The new generation non-asbestos sheets produced three times higher PM emissions than asbestos-cement sheets during crushing operation. Particle size distribution of number concentrations was mostly bimodal (two modes at 0.5 and 2.5 mm). With respect to fibres, the release of cellulose fibres from non-asbestos slates was from 1.8 to 13 times lower in comparison with asbestos fibres. At the same time, cellulose fibre length was 1.4e1.6 times lower. Hence, new generation non-asbestos roofing slates were proved to be less hazardous from the point of view of fibre release, but more hazardous with respect to total particle release.

People spend major part of their life indoors – at home or in other public or private indoor environments. Clean air in the living environment is very important for the public health. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is largely dependent on the outdoor air quality, due to the continuous indoor air mixing with the ambient air. However, air pollutants in buildings are strongly linked to building indoor factors as well (emissions from building structure, fabrics, coating, furnishing, ventilation system, food preparation, occupant activities etc.). Building renovation is mostly based on economic aspects – performing cost-effective refurbishment actions assuming further savings in energy costs, without taking into account possible changes in air quality conditions. Therefore, a natural question arises whether it will be possible to ensure a comfortable and healthy living for occupants. There is a lack of methodologically robust intervention studies that support the improvement of energy efficiency measures by means of improved IAQ. It is also important to improve the knowledgebase in order to support the implementation of the related policies in Europe. In this context, overview of the results from before and after intervention measurements and emissions from building materials were presented, and the implications on IAQ were discussed. The results of the research provide data for the technical and administrative measures for the improvement of IAQ in residential buildings., Žmonės įprastai praleidžia didžiąją dalį savo laiko patalpose - namuose ar kitų valstybinių ir privačių patalpų aplinkoje. Švaraus oro užtikrinimas gyvenamojoje aplinkoje yra labai svarbus visuomenės sveikatai. Oro teršalai patalpose yra glaudžiai susiję su pastato viduje vykstančiais procesais (emisijos iš pastato konstrukcijos, apdailos medžiagų, buitinių cheminių priemonių, ventiliacijos sistemos, maisto ruošos, gyventojų aktyvumo ir t.t.). Dėl nuolatinio vidaus oro maišymosi su išorės aplinkos oru, patalpų oro kokybė yra taip pat smarkiai įtakojama išorės oro kokybės. Pastatų renovacija daugiausia yra grindžiama ekonominiu aspektu. Atliekant ekonominius pastatų atnaujinimo veiksmus, paremtus didesniu energijos sąnaudų taupymu, neatsižvelgiama į galimus oro kokybės pokyčius. Todėl kyla natūralus klausimas ar po šių procesų pavyks užtikrinti patogią ir sveiką gyvenseną. Šiuo metu yra stygius metodologiškai stiprių mokslinių tyrimų, kurie nagrinėja energijos efektyvumo priemonių didinimo įtaką patalpų oro kokybei. Atsižvelgiant į tai, šiame darbe yra aptariami gauti rezultatai iš oro kokybės tyrimų daugiabučiuose pastatuose jų eksploatacijos metu bei aerozolio dalelių emisijos iš statybinių medžiagų pastato statybos ir atnaujinimo metu. Taip pat parengtos rekomendacijos daugiabučių pastatų atnaujinimui ir eksploatacijai, užtikrinant sveiką patalpų oro kokybę. Tyrimo rezultatai suteikia svarbios informacijos tiek techninėms, tiek ir administracinėms priemonėms, skirtoms gyvenamųjų pastatų patalpų oro kokybei pagerinti.

Indoor air quality is an influential factor in human health. To achieve a standard of comfort, it is necessary to have an interaction of variables, such as the optimization of relative humidity, temperature, and measurements of indoor air quality. Another important factor is the need for air renewal in the environment. Low rates of air exchange in indoor environments cause a considerable increase in chemical and biological pollutants in the air. Chemical products comprising volatile organic compounds, particulate matter, and others are released into the air from everyday products, various constructions, and processing tools. The largest is fresh construction materials. In general, it is common to spend more time working, living, or in leisure activities indoors. Nowadays, this topic is gaining more and more attention in debates and research, such as the concern to reduce its risks, as it is a matter of public health. For these reasons, it is crucial to decide on air abatement technology to clean the air effectively and efficiently. In this master thesis, a prototype is analyzed to decompose the VOC concentration, where terpene is applied to the airflow to create an atmosphere with VOCs so that its decomposition can be investigated. This device is divided into stages: non-thermal plasma, UVC photolysis, bipolar ionization, electrostatic precipitator, and an ozone destructor. In this prototype, advanced oxidation processes are utilized to remove aerosol particles in the complex air cleaner device. The study aims to investigate the efficiency of the complex air cleaner prototype by observing how aerosol particles as a by-product of the VOCs oxidation/decomposition process are generated at different air cleaning device stages. The objectives are: An overview of scientific literature on VOCs as an indoor pollution source, as well as aerosol particles generation as a by-product of the VOCs oxidation/decomposition process and its removal technologies; To create a research plan and prepare a methodology for generated aerosol particle sampling in the complex air cleaner prototype; To evaluate the influence of individual complex air cleaner module parameters (bipolar ionization power and the number of UV lamps) on the generation of aerosol particles; To determine the dependence of the generated aerosol particle removal efficiency (efficiency of electrostatic precipitator) on the process parameters. Experiments utilized ELPI+ Dekati as an analytical instrument to measure real-time particle number concentration of the aerosol formation at each sampling point. As a result of it, the particle size distribution and total suspended particles were plotted and analyzed. The initial concentrations had smaller diameters and higher concentrations, however, when observing the data at different sampling points (after the reaction chamber where the particles passed through UVC photolysis and bipolar ionizer), it had a slighter decrease in concentration, and the influence of a number of the UVC lamps and bipolar ionizer did not appear to affect the relationship of increase in gas-to-particle conversion rate. At the last sampling measurement point, a significant decrease in concentration occurred leading to an increase in particle size. Overall, the complex air cleaner prototype had a removal efficiency of approximately 99,7%., Patalpų oro kokybė daro didelę įtaką žmonių sveikatai. Komfortiškos sąlygos gali būti pasiektos esant tam tikrų kintamųjų sąveikai, pvz., optimaliai santykinei drėgmei, temperatūrai ir patalpų oro kokybei (mikroklimatui). Kitas svarbus veiksnys gerai patalpų oro kokybei – tinkamas oro apykaitos lygis. Žemas oro apykaitos lygis patalpose padidina cheminių ir biologinių teršalų kiekį ore. Patalpų aplinkos ore veikiant aktyviems ir pasyviems veiksniams į orą patenka įvairūs teršalai, tokie kaip lakieji organiniai junginiai, kietosios dalelės ir kt. Didelė organinių teršalų emisija atsiranda iš naujų statybinių medžiagų. Įprasta, kad daugiau laiko praleidžiama dirbant, gyvenant ar užsiimant laisvalaikio veiklomis uždarose patalpose. Šiais laikais ši tema sulaukia vis daugiau dėmesio diskusijose ir tyrimuose, rūpinamasi kaip sumažinti jos riziką, nes tai yra visuomenės sveikatos klausimas. Dėl šių priežasčių labai svarbu apsvarstyti oro taršos mažinimo technologijas, kad oras būtų išvalytas efektyviai. Šiame magistro darbe analizuojamas eksperimentinis inovatyvaus kompleksinio oro valymo įrenginio prototipas, kuris skirtas LOJ teršalams skaidyti. Lakus organinis junginys – terpenas, buvo pasirinktas kaip teršalas, siekiant ištirti jo skilimo procesus. Kompleksinio oro valymo įrenginio prototipas skirstomas į kelis etapus: neterminę plazmą, UVC fotolizę, bipolinę jonizaciją, elektrostatinį nusodintuvą ir ozono destruktorių. Šiame prototipe naudojami pažangūs oksidacijos procesai, siekiant pašalinti aerozolio daleles sudėtingame oro valytuvo įrenginyje. Tyrimo tikslas – ištirti eksperimentinio inovatyvaus kompleksinio oro valymo įrenginio prototipo efektyvumą, stebint, kaip aerozolio dalelės, kaip šalutinis LOJ oksidacijos/skilimo proceso produktas, susidaro skirtingose oro valymo įrenginio stadijose. Tikslai: Apžvelgti mokslinę literatūrą apie LOJ, kaip patalpų taršos šaltinį, taip pat aerozolių dalelių susidarymą kaip LOJ oksidacijos/skilimo proceso šalutinį produktą ir jų šalinimo technologijas; Sudaryti tyrimo planą ir parengti generuojamų aerozolių dalelių mėginių ėmimo kompleksiniame oro valytuvo prototipe metodiką; Įvertinti atskirų kompleksinių oro valytuvo modulių parametrų (bipolinės jonizacijos galios ir UV lempų skaičiaus) įtaką aerozolio dalelių susidarymui; Nustatyti susidarančio aerozolio dalelių šalinimo efektyvumo (elektrostatinio nusodintuvo efektyvumo) priklausomybę nuo proceso parametrų. ELPI+ Dekati buvo naudojamas kaip analitinis prietaisas, skirtas matuoti susidariusių aerozolio dalelių koncentraciją realiu laiku kiekviename mėginių ėmimo taške. Šiame darbe buvo grafiškai atvaizduotas ir išanalizuotas dalelių pasiskirstymas pagal dydį ir bendras suspenduotų dalelių kiekis (skaitinė koncentracija). Pradinės koncentracijos buvo mažesnio skersmens ir tankesnės, tačiau, stebint duomenis skirtinguose mėginių ėmimo taškuose (po reakcijos kameros, kurioje dalelės praeidavo per UVC fotolizę ir bipolinį jonizatorių), jų koncentracija šiek tiek sumažėjo. UVC lempų skaičius ir bipolinis jonizatorius neturėjo įtakos dalelių konversijos iš dujinės fazės greičio padidėjimui. Paskutiniame mėginių ėmimo matavimo taške, po elektrostatinio nusodintuvo, žymiai sumažėjo dalelių koncentracija, todėl padidėjo dalelių dydis. Kompleksinio oro valymo įrenginio prototipo aerozolio dalelių šalinimo efektyvumas siekė apie 99,7%.

Patalpų oro kokybė – vienas iš svarbių faktorių, norint gyventi kokybiškai. Patalpų oro kokybę gali paveikti daugybė įvairių faktorių – vienas iš jų tabako gaminiai. Kaitinamojo tabako produktai – nauja, plačiai plintanti alternatyva, tradicinių cigarečių vartojimui, tačiau kiekvienas naujas rinkoje atsirandantis produktas turėtų būti kruopščiai ištirtas, siekiant charakterizuoti emisijas į aplinką, taigi ir galimą poveikį oro kokybei bei pašaliniams asmenims. Magistro baigiamojo projekto darbo tikslas buvo sudaryti tabako kaitinimo produktų sąlygojamos taršos patalpų ore skaičiuojamosios skysčių dinamikos modelį ir jį validuoti naudojant eksperimentinio tyrimo duomenis. Mokslinės literatūros apžvalgoje atlikta kaitinamojo tabako produktų apžvalga, veikimo principas, išmetamųjų cheminių junginių, koncentracijų kiekių analizė patalpose, įvertintas poveikis sveikatai ir skaičiuojamosios skysčių dinamikos pritaikymo galimybės, nustatytam modeliui apskaičiuoti, apžvelgiama modeliavimo specifika, pasirinkta programinė įranga SolidWorks. Metodinėje dalyje aprašyta tyrimams naudojama metodika, duomenys, sistemos modelis, tyrimų planas ir darbo eiliškumas. Taršos šaltinio projektavimui parinkti skirtingi aerozolių dalelių dydžiai: 50nm, 60nm, 70nm, 80nm, 90nm, 100nm. Rezultatų dalyje atliktas skirtingų ventiliacijos režimų modeliavimas ir pasirinktų, aerozolio dalelių taršos modeliavimas į kvėpuojantį žmogų ir rezultatų apžvalga., Indoor air quality is one of the most important factors for a good quality of life. Indoor air quality can be affected by many different factors, one of them being tobacco products. Heated tobacco products are a new and widespread alternative to traditional cigarettes, but each new product on the market should be carefully studied to characterise emissions into the environment and thus potential impacts on air quality and bystanders. The aim of the Master's Final Degree Project was to develop a computational fluid dynamics model of indoor air pollution caused by tobacco heating products and to validate it using experimental data. The literature review provides an overview of combustible tobacco products, the principle of operation, the analysis of chemical emissions, indoor concentrations, the assessment of health effects and the applicability of computational fluid dynamics to calculate the established model, an overview of the specifics of the modelling, and the choice of SolidWorks software. The methodological part describes the methodology, data, system model, research design and sequence of work. Different aerosol particle sizes have been selected for the source design: 50nm, 60nm, 70nm, 80nm, 90nm, 100nm. In the results part, the simulation of different ventilation modes and the modelling of the selected aerosol particles to a breathing human being was carried out and the results are summarised.

Lakieji organiniai junginiai, tai ore esančios dujų fazės teršalai, kurie skleidžią nemalonų kvapą ir daro neigiamą poveikį aplinkos kokybei ir žmonių sveikatai, todėl būtina kontroliuoti jų išmetimą. Daugelis šių junginių yra reaktyvios medžiagos, galinčios reaguoti į aplinkos oksidatorius ir sudaryti naujus teršalus. Dažniausiai lakieji organiniai junginiai yra išmetami įvairiose pramonės šakose ar žmogaus veiklos procesuose. Magistro baigiamojo projekto tikslas ištirti pažangiosios oksidacijos principais paremtą lakiųjų organinių junginių šalinimo technologiją. Oro valymo sistemos technologija buvo pagrįsta daugiapakope konfigūracija, įskaitant ozonolizę, fotolizę, aerozolių aglomeraciją bei dalelių nusodinimo elektrostatiniame lauke. Tokia seka lemia lakiųjų organinių junginių pašalinimą paverčiant juos iš dujinės būsenos į aerozolio daleles. Technologijos bandymui kaip tikslinis teršalas buvo pasirinktas terpenas, kuriame gausu junginių: α–pineno, β–pineno ir α–terpineolio. Šio tirpalo pradinė koncentracija buvo 4,1 ± 0,3 mg / m3., Volatile organic compounds are airborne gas phase pollutants that emit unpleasant odours and have negative impact on the quality of the environment and human health; therefore, it is necessary to control their emissions. Many of these compounds are reactive substances that can react with environmental oxidants to form new contaminants. Volatile organic compounds are most commonly emitted in various industries or human activity processes. The master's thesis presents a volatile organic compounds air purification system based on a multi-stage configuration, including ozonolysis, photolysis, agglomeration of aerosols, and precipitation of aerosols in electrostatic field. This sequence results volatile organic compounds removal by converting them from the gaseous state to aerosol particles. As the target pollutant, for the technology test, was chosen terpene rich compounds: α–pinene, β–pinene and α–terpineol. The initial concentration of this solution was 4,1±0.3 mg/m3.

Rinkoje atsiranda vis daugiau naujų nikotino turinčių produktų: naujos kartos elektroninės cigaretės ir tabako kaitinimo sistemos, kurios naudojamos kaip alternatyva tradicinėms cigaretėms. Tačiau adekvačių tyrimų trūkumas ir metodologinės problemos sukelia sunkumų formuojant išvadas apie elektroninių cigarečių ir tabako kaitinimo sistemos poveikį patalpų oro kokybei ir žmonių sveikatai. Metodų ir duomenų trūkumas analizuojant naujų nikotino turinčių produktų taršą aerozolio dalelėmis, bei jų kitimo erdvėje ir laike dinamiką Projekto tikslas – charakterizuoti naujų nikotino turinčių produktų aerozolio dalelių emisiją ir palyginti su tradicinių cigarečių išskiriama tarša. Siekiant nustatyti elektroninių cigarečių ir tabako kaitinimo sistemos poveikį patalpų oro kokybei, naudoti 2–iejų projektų metu sukaupti duomenys. Bendruoju atveju projektų metu buvo naudotas eksperimentinis kambarys imituojantis realias sąlygas, kuriame buvo įmontuotas šildomas manekenas. Eksperimentų metu buvo analizuojama aerozolio dalelių koncentracijos kitimo erdvėje ir laike dinamika, bei aerozolio dalelių pasiskirstymas pagal dydį. Taip pat palyginti elektroninių cigarečių ir tabako kaitinimo sistemos generuojamą aerozolio dalelių emisiją su tradicinių cigarečių generuojama emisija. Gauti duomenys buvo apdorojami naudojant pagrindinius aprašomosios statistinės analizės metodus. Tyrimo metu įvertintas tradicinių, elektroninių cigarečių ir tabako kaitinimo sistemos generuojamo aerozolio dalelių pasiskirstymas laike ir erdvėje. Nustatyta, kad elektroninių ir tradicinių cigarečių generuojamą aerozolio dalelių koncentraciją įtakoja atstumas nuo manekeno, taip pat priklauso nuo vartotojų iškvepiamų dūmų topografijos. Didėjant atstumui nuo manekeno elektroninių cigarečių generuojama aerozolio dalelių koncentracija sumažėjo vidutiniškai 1,5 karto, o tradicinių cigarečių padidėjo 2 kartus. Tabako kaitinimo sistemos generuojamo aerozolio dalelių koncentracija. priklauso nuo drėgmės, atstumo nuo manekeno ir oro apykaitos koeficiento. Nustatyta mažiausia tabako kaitinimo sistemos generuojama aerozolio dalelių koncentracija esant 30 % drėgmei, oro apykaitai 0,5 h-1 ir 0,5 m atstumui nuo manekeno t. y. 1,92×104 #/cm3. Lyginant pagal vidutinę elektroninių, tradicinių cigarečių ir tabako kaitinimo sistemos generuojamą aerozolio dalelių koncentraciją pastebėta, kad tabako kaitinimo sistemos generuoja 1,64×105±1,61×105 #/cm3 emisiją t. y. 2,7 kartus mažesnę už elektroninių cigarečių ir 21,9 karto mažesnę už tradicinių cigarečių koncentraciją. Įvertinus elektroninių ir tradicinių cigarečių generuojamo aerozolio dalelių pasiskirstymą pagal dydį nustatyta, kad daugiausiai aptikta nuo 0,0165–1,59 µm dydžio dalelių. Such innovations, however, lack of adequate research regarding human health, therefore it’s hard to draw any clear conclusions on how electronic cigarettes and tobacco heating system effects human health and indoor air quality. Moreover there’s still lack of methodological data for analysis of new nicotine containing products pollution with aerosol particles and their change in temporal and spatial variation. The aim of this project – describe aerosol particle emissions of new nicotine containing products and compare them with conventional cigarette pollution. Two projects and their data was used to determine electronic cigarettes and tobacco heating system effects on indoor air quality. An experimental chamber imitating real conditions with an installed heated dummy was used in the overall experiment. During the experiment aerosol particle concentration change in temporal and spatial variation as well as aerosol particle distribution by size was analyzed. Generated electronic cigarette and tobacco heating system aerosol particle emissions was compared with conventional cigarette emissions. Gathered data was processed by using main descriptive statistical analysis indicators. During the research generated electronic cigarette and tobacco heating system. aerosol particle variation in temporal and spatial environment was evaluated. It was established that electronic and conventional cigarette aerosol concentration is influenced by distance to dummy and consumer exhaled smoke topographies. Increasing distance to the dummy, generated electronic cigarette aerosol concentration decreased on average 1.5 times and for conventional cigarettes increased 2 times. Tobacco heating system. is influenced by humidity, distance to the dummy and air flow coefficient. At 30 % humidity, air flow coefficient 0.5 h-1 and 0.5 m distance to dummy, which is 1.92×104 #/cm3, lowest tobacco heating system aerosol particle concentration was established. By comparing average generated electronic cigarette, conventional cigarette and tobacco heating system aerosol particle concentrations, it was observed that tobacco heating system generated 1.64×105±1.61×105 #/cm3 , which is 2.7 times less than electronic cigarette and 21.9 times less than conventional cigarette. After evaluating generated electronic and conventional cigarette aerosol particle distribution by size it was determined that 0.0165–1.59 μm particles were found most frequently.
