Abstract

In case of a hypothetical severe accident in a Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR), coolability of the debris bed in the post-accident phase plays a vital role in mitigating the accident and ensuring the structural integrity of the reactor vessel. Few numerical studies are reported in literature, in which the boiling heat transfer in debris bed is expressed as equivalent heat conduction using similarity law between heat conduction and two-phase heat transfer. However, these studies assumed steady state mass conservation for the boiling zone and neglected the gravity force. Hence, a detailed study has been carried out for various particle sizes and porosities of SFR debris to investigate the influence of above considerations. The effect of gravity on debris bed coolability is studied using steady state model of Lipinski, which showed that gravity has a non-negligible effect, for particle size of 0.3 mm and porosity of 0.5. However, the gravitation force was found to have a negligible effect in dryout heat flux estimation for the bottom cooled configuration. A transient numerical model is developed for simulating the boiling phenomena in debris beds and validated with the published experimental results. The assumption of steady state mass conservation is verified by carrying out transient analysis, which indicated early prediction of the dryout inception. For time dependent heat generation case, the unsteady mass conservation predicted higher DHF compared to constant heat generation.

Abstract

Abstract Cybersecurity is critical in today’s digitally linked and networked society. There is no way to overestimate the importance of cyber security as technology develops and becomes more pervasive in our daily lives. Cybersecurity is essential to people’s protection. One type of cyberattack known as “credential stuffing” involves using previously acquired usernames and passwords by attackers to access user accounts on several websites without authorization. This is feasible as a lot of people use the same passwords and usernames on several different websites. Maintaining the security of online accounts requires defence against credential-stuffing attacks. The problems of credential stuffing attacks, failure detection, and prediction can be handled by the suggested EWOA-ANN model. Here, a novel optimization approach known as Enhanced Whale Optimization Algorithm (EWOA) is put on to train the neural network. The effectiveness of the suggested attack identification model has been demonstrated, and an empirical comparison will be carried out with respect to specific security analysis.

Abstract

Abstract This work develops a hybrid active power filter (HAPF) in this article to operate in conjunction with the energy storage system (ESS), wind power generation system (WPGS), and solar energy system (SES). It employs three level shunt voltage source converters (VSC) connected to the DC-bus. Optimization of the gain values of the fractional-order proportional integral derivative controller (FOPIDC) and parameter values of the HAPF is achieved using the Jaya grey wolf hybrid algorithm (GWJA). The primary objectives of this study, aimed at enhancing power quality (PQ), include: (1) ensuring swift stabilization of DC link capacitor voltage (DCLCV); (2) reducing harmonics and improving power factor (PF); (3) maintaining satisfactory performance under different combinations of loads like EV charging load, non linear load and solar irradiation conditions. The proposed controller's performance is evaluated through three test scenarios featuring different load configurations and irradiation levels. Additionally, the HAPF is subjected to design using other optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and ant colony optimization (ACO) to assess their respective contributions to PQ improvement.

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce an environmentally friendly approach to recycle used batteries and recover highly valuable manganese-based cathode materials. This study demonstrates the feasibility of fast plasma pyrolysis to recover LiMn2O4 electrode materials (e.g., lithium manganese oxide, LMO) and demonstrate their reuse in newly assembled Li-ion cells. The electrochemical performance of as-recycled cathodes shows an initial discharge capacity of 72 mAh/g and is stable for 100 cycles at 0.1 C. After adding 20 mole % of excess LiOH, the recycled LMO after relithiation at 660 °C can deliver an initial discharge capacity of 96 mAh/g and retain a decent discharge capacity of 88 mAh/g after 50 cycles at a 0.2 C rate. Without relithiation, the as-recycled LMO cathode after heating at 1000 °C delivers the best electrochemical cycling performance, including an initial discharge capacity of 94 mAh/g and 50th cycle capacity of 91 mAh/g at a 0.2 C rate. This study highlights a feasible approach for recycling electrode materials in spent LIBs. Recycling of lithium-ion batteries and especially electrode materials is crucial for the sustained growth of the lithium-ion battery industry and reduced environmental issues.

Abstract

Magnesium-based biomaterials have recently been in the research spotlight in the field of biomedical engineering owing to their properties, such as density and biocompatibility that closely align with those of human bone. However, poor strength and rapid degradation impede their application as bone support fixtures. The present research aims to tailor the properties of Mg by using a novel ultrasonic-assisted rheo-squeeze casting approach. To satisfy the demand, pure Mg (Mg), MHA (Mg/5%HA), MZHA (Mg-1%Zn/5%HA/), and MSHA (Mg-1%Sn/5%HA) were fabricated, and various mechanical tests were conducted to assess the composite’s mechanical properties, including its microhardness, tensile strength, compressive strength, flexural strength, and impact strength. The microstructural and fractured morphology of the composites was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), whereas their elemental composition was analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) equipped with elemental mapping. Comparing the MZHA, MHA, and pure Mg samples, the mechanical behavior of MSHA is significantly superior. This is due to composites containing Sn that possess finer-grained materials, which act as barriers to dislocation motion while increasing the strength of the materials. From the observed results, there is a significant improvement in the microhardness of MSHA of 64.5% when compared to that of pure Mg, and 42.7% compared to MHA. Furthermore, MSHA composites possess noticeable enhancements in tensile and compression performance of 80.8% and 58.3%, respectively, and 19% and 22.4% compared to MHA. Additionally, the impact and flexural performance of MSHA composites exhibit higher performance (41% and 42%) than pure Mg and 8% and 7% against the MHA composite.

Recent advancements in the cloud computing domain have resulted in huge strides toward simplifying the procurement of hardware and software for diverse needs. By moving enterprise workloads to managed cloud offerings (private, public, hybrid), customers are delegating mundane tasks and labor-intensive maintenance activities related to network connectivity, procurement of cloud resource, application deployment, software patches, and upgrades, etc., This often translates to benefits such as high availability and reduced cost. The popularity of container and micro-services-based deployment has made Kubernetes the de-facto standard to deliver applications. However, even with Kubernetes orchestration, cloud service providers frequently have operational scalability issues due to lack of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CICD) automation and increased demand for human operators when managing a large number of software deployments across multiple data centers/availability zones. Kubernetes solves this in a novel way by creating and managing custom applications using Operators. Agile methodology advocates incremental CICD which are adopted by cloud providers. However, ironically, it is this same continuous delivery feature of application updates, Kubernetes cluster upgrades, etc., that is also a bane to cloud providers. In this paper, we will demonstrate the use of IBM open-source project Razee as a scalable continuous deployment framework to deploy open-source RStudio and Nginx Operators. We will discuss how IBM Watson SaaS application Operator, Blockchain applications, and Kubernetes resources updates, etc., can be deployed similarly and the use of Operators to perform application life cycle management. Abstract

The behavior and performance of distribution systems have been significantly impacted by the presence of solar and wind based renewable energy sources (RES) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) based electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. This work designs the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) through optimal selection of the active filter and PID Controller (PIDC) parameters using the enhanced most valuable player algorithm (EMVPA). The prime objective is to effectively address the power quality (PQ) challenges such as voltage distortions and total harmonic distortions (THD) of a distribution system integrated with UPQC, solar, wind, BESS and EV (U-SWBEV). The study also aims to manage the power flow between the RES, grid, EV, BESS, and consumer loads by artificial neuro-fuzzy interface system (ANFIS). Besides, this integration helps to have a reliable supply of electricity, efficient utilization of generated power, and effective fulfillment of the demand. The proposed scheme results in a THD of 4.5%, 2.26%, 4.09% and 3.98% for selected four distinct case studies with power factor to almost unity with an appropriate power sharing. Therefore, the study and results indicate that the ANFIS based power flow management with optimal design of UPQC addresses the PQ challenges and achieves the appropriate and effective sharing of power.
