Abstract

Superalloys go through cyclic oxidation which refers to the progression of reputed exposure of materials to alternating oxidizing and non-oxidizing environments at high temperatures. The oxidation behavior of cobalt-based superalloy coatings depends on several variables, including the environment, surface roughness, manufacturing conditions, & coating composition. Because of their higher temperatures and protective oxide layer, coatings with a greater cobalt concentration are more oxidation-resistant. The behavior of oxidation is influenced by surface roughness, where rough surfaces offer greater surface area to oxidation while smooth surfaces decrease interaction with the environment. The microstructure and porosity of the coating are further impacted by processing variables used in thermal spraying, including temperature, particles velocity, and spray distance. Adding reactive components to the coating composition, such as silicon and aluminum, and applying post-treatments like nitriding or sealing are two ways to increase oxidation resistance. A greater temperature and particle speed can lead to a denser with less porous covering, improving the oxidation process resistance. The two typically used heat spraying techniques are high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) and plasma spraying. To increase the resistance to oxidation of thermal spray cobalt-based superalloy coating, some strategies have been devised, such as inclusion of reactive materials, such as aluminum and silicon, which is the coating composition. Abstract

Dry sliding wear tests on Cu-Al-Mn Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) were performed in this study. The alloy was synthesised with the amount of manganese content varied as 5, 7, and 9 wt.% and the amount of aluminium was kept constant at 10.5 wt.% with the remaining copper. Dry sliding wear tests were carried out at different conditions of sliding speeds, sliding distances, and various load conditions. Experiments were carried out using Taguchi's technique to obtain an experimental design. The data were analysed using an L27 orthogonal array. The wear rate (WR) and coefficient of friction (COF) were evaluated using the 'smaller is better' method approach. The main parameters affecting WR and COF were determined using ANOVA. The effects of applied load, sliding speed, sliding distance, and material on WR and COF are determined. The optimum combinations of parameters were set to achieve the lowest wear rate and highest COF. Finally, confirmation tests were conducted to ensure that the experimental results were accurate. 40. Microstructure, mechanical and wear properties of SiC and Mo reinforced NiCr microwave cladding.

Abstract

The NiCrMoSiC composite cladding on Titan-31 base alloy was produced using a hybrid microwave heating process. The produced claddings were examined for microstructural, phase analysis, microhardness, and surface roughness using suitable techniques. The linear reciprocator ball on plate wear test was conducted using a static alumina indenter on microwave cladding. Studies have been done on track specifications for friction and wear. It is feasible to fabricate a dense microstructure with uniform distribution of hard phases, absence of pores and fractures, and strong metallurgical bonds. Typically, cladding is two times as durable as the underlying metal. The cladding has a lower coefficient of friction than the substrate as a result of enhanced hardness and improved internal lubricity brought on by the production of hard carbide phases. 41. Design and optimization of fatigue life studies on induction hardened IN718 alloy for gas turbine applications.

Abstract

The Inconel 718 (IN718) superalloy is commonly used as a component in industrial gas turbines due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature properties. Generally, gas turbines experience failure in their service on account of high thermal fatigue. In the present research, specimens of Inconel 718 superalloy are treated at two different temperatures 850℃ and 1000℃ (IHT1 & IHT2) with oil quenching, respectively. The specimens are studied with controlled strain amplitudes for different values 0.6%, 0.7% & 0.8% at room temperature and 800°C. It is noticed that the fatigue lifetimes of induction-hardened specimens are greater than those of untreated specimens at the above-mentioned strain amplitude values at room and elevated temperature, whereas the fatigue life of all the specimens reduces as strain amplitudes increase. Interestingly, the stress difference among the three strain amplitudes gradually decreases as the fatigue test progresses and induction-hardened specimens have cyclic softening behaviour as compared to untreated specimens' cyclic hardening behaviour. Additionally, the mode of fracture for IN718 superalloys in the current study is entirely transgranular, as shown by the fracture surface observation using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
