Membrane application in wastewater is gaining significant popularity. Selecting the right membrane and filtration technique is an important consideration to ensure a successful system development and long term performance. A new type of membrane filtration technology known as ‘Vibratory Shear Enhanced Process’ (VSEP) is introduced in this paper with some test results that has been conducted with VSEP pilot unit to recycle starch wastewater. Conventional cross flow membrane process used in wastewater application always led to rapid fouling. This loss in throughput capacity is primarily due to the formation of a layer that builds up naturally on the membranes surface during the filtration process. In addition to cutting down on the flux performance of the membrane, this boundary or gel layer acts as a secondary membrane reducing the native design selectivity of the membrane in use. This inability to handle the buildup of solids has also limited the use of membranes to low-solids feed streams. In a VSEP system, an additional shear wave produced by the membrane’s vibration cause solids and foulants to be lifted off the membrane surface and remixed with the bulk material flowing through the membrane stack. This high shear processing exposes the membrane pores for maximum throughput that is typically between 3 to10 times the throughput of conventional cross-flow systems. The short term results with raw starch wastewater shows very stable flux rate of 110 lmh using the VSEP system and selecting the PVDF ultrafiltration membrane with no pre-filtration.

Curcumin (CUR), a polyphenolic compound, shows promising biological properties, particularly antioxidant activity. However, its medical applications are limited due to its low water solubility, bioavailability, and pH-instability. CUR-loaded albumin microparticles (CUR-HSA-MPs) of submicron size in the range of 800 to 900 nm and a zeta potential of −15 mV were prepared. The CUR loading efficiency was up to 65%. A maximum release of 37% of the encapsulated CUR was observed within 6 h when the CUR-HSA-MPs were dispersed in 50% ethanol in PBS at pH 7, while in RPMI 1640 medium the release was 7%. This demonstrates a sustainable release. The in vitro cytotoxicity of CUR-HSA-MPs showed promising anticancer potential against human hepatocellular carcinoma (Huh-7) and human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines, although this effect was less pronounced in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFB) and human cholangiocyte (MMN) cell lines. Confocal microscopy was used to confirm the uptake of CUR-HSA-MPs by cancer cells. Our studies revealed that HSA-MPs are potentially promising vehicles for increasing the solubility and bioavailability of CUR.

This study investigated the epidemiology of gastrointestinal (GI) parasite infections among 42 meat goat herds in Khon Kaen, Northeast Thailand, based on 913 fecal samples. The predominant parasites identified in the herd were strongyle (100.0%, 42/42), Trichuris spp. (73.8%, 31/42), Eimeria spp. (66.7%, 28/42), Moniezia spp. (64.3%, 27/42), Strongyloides spp. (38.1%, 16/42), and Paramphistomum spp. (7.1%, 3/42). Coinfection with at least two GI parasites was observed in 90.4% of the herds. Molecular analysis confirmed Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus spp. as the strongyle species. The study explored parasite prevalence among animals, finding significant correlations with season, sex, age, and breed. Notably, the wet season showed increased strongyle and Eimeria spp. infections. Female animals had higher odds of strongyle infection, while younger animals (less than 1 year) were more susceptible. Conversely, animals aged over 1 year were more likely to be positive for Trichuris spp., Moniezia spp., and Eimeria spp. infections. Female animals exhibited poor body condition scores (BCS) and anemia, as indicated by the FAMACHA score and packed cell volume (PCV) levels. Correlations between age, clinical signs, hematological parameters, biochemistry, and GI parasite burdens were investigated, revealing significant associations. These findings emphasize the need for tailored intervention strategies considering seasonal variations, age, and sex differences for effective GI parasite control in meat goats. Prioritizing animals exhibiting poor BCS and elevated FAMACHA score is imperative to mitigate the deleterious impacts of GI parasitic infections on health and productivity.

Undoubtedly, throughout the past half-century, environmental quality has emerged as a significant obstacle to both economic and social endeavors. Recent local and international policy debates have focused on environmental deterioration and global warming, but how governments balance economic growth and environmental sustainability is still enigmatic. For this reason, we have examined the determinants of environmental quality in India from 1972 to 2021. More specifically, we have investigated whether the fiscal deficit is ‘curse’ or ‘haven’ for environmental quality (CO2) in India. Moreover, this study deliberated four other predictors, comprising technological development (TIN), fossil fuel consumption (FFC), urbanization (Ub), and human capital index (HCI). In order to attain this objective, a range of econometric estimation techniques are employed to ensure the validity and reliability of the outcomes. For instance, we have employed a battery of ARDL approaches, such as standard ARDL, nonlinear ARDL, and multiple threshold NARDL approaches. In light of our research findings, we will be focusing directly on the examination of the NARDL and MTNARDL outcomes. This is due to the empirical evidence indicating the existence of asymmetric effects resulting from FD on CO2 emissions in India. The NARDL approach reveals that the consequence of fiscal deterioration is more pronounced, and the influence of fiscal progress is mild in terms of CO2 emission growth. Further, the outcomes of the MTNARDL approach revealed that the size of the extremely low changes in FD is much higher than the extremely high changes in FD in both models. This implies that as the FD rises, CO2 ascends more significantly, and when the FD lowers, CO2 declines progressively. In a nutshell, FD has a long-run positive and asymmetric impact on CO2 in India; thus, we may conclude that FD is considered the ‘curse’ for CO2 in India. Furthermore, TIN, HCI, and Ub have detrimental effects on CO2, whereas FFC stimulates CO2 in India. This research work provides some important policy implications for environmentalists, economists and macroeconomic policymakers to promote a green and healthy environment.

BackgroundCoronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) has emerged as a powerful imaging modality for the detection and prognostication of individuals with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). High amounts of coronary artery calcium (CAC) significantly obscure the interpretation of CCTA. Clinical risk assessment tools and data specific to predictors of high CAC in symptomatic patients are limited.MethodsConsecutive patients who underwent CAC scan and CCTA to diagnose CAD during 2016–2020 were included. A high CAC score was defined as >400 by Agatston method. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the predictors of high CAC. The clinical risk score was derived from factors independently associated with high CAC. The derivation cohort was composed of 465 patients; this score was validated in 98 patients.ResultsThe mean age was 63 ± 11 years, 53% were female, and 15.9% had high CAC scores. The independent predictors of high CAC scores were age >65 years (odds ratio [OR] 3.02, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) 1.56–5.85, p = 0.001), chronic kidney disease (CKD) (OR 11.09, 95%CI 3.38–36.38, p 65) score allocates 1 point for age >65, 2 points for CKD or heart failure, and 3 points for hypertension or vascular diseases. Using a threshold of ≥4 points, the sensitivity and specificity to detect high CAC was 81% and 80%, respectively. The area under the curve was 0.88 and 0.85 in the derivation and validation cohorts, respectively.ConclusionThe novel H2VK-65 score demonstrated good performance for predicting high CAC scores in symptomatic patients referred for CCTA.

BackgroundThe objective of mass antimalarial drug administration (MDA) is to eliminate malaria rapidly by eliminating the asymptomatic malaria parasite reservoirs and interrupting transmission. In the Greater Mekong Subregion, where artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum is now widespread, MDA has been proposed as an elimination accelerator, but the contribution of asymptomatic infections to malaria transmission has been questioned. The impact of MDA on entomological indices has not been characterized previously.MethodsMDA was conducted in 4 villages in Kayin State (Myanmar). Malaria mosquito vectors were captured 3 months before, during, and 3 months after MDA, and their Plasmodium infections were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. The relationship between the entomological inoculation rate, the malaria prevalence in humans determined by ultrasensitive PCR, and MDA was characterized by generalized estimating equation regression.ResultsAsymptomatic P. falciparum and Plasmodium vivax infections were cleared by MDA. The P. vivax entomological inoculation rate was reduced by 12.5-fold (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.6-100-fold), but the reservoir of asymptomatic P. vivax infections was reconstituted within 3 months, presumably because of relapses. This was coincident with a 5.3-fold (95% CI, 4.8-6.0-fold) increase in the vector infection rate.ConclusionAsymptomatic infections are a major source of malaria transmission in Southeast Asia.

Eye Movements and Visual Abilities Characteristics in Gymnasts, Soccer Players, and Esports Athletes: A Comparative Study. JEPonline 2024;27(5):70-80. This study investigated the differences in eye movements and visual ability among female athletes from gymnastics, soccer, and esports. Forty-two female athletes (14 per Group) participated. Eye movements were recorded using Tobii Pro Glasses 2 while the participants viewed standardized video stimuli. Fixation count, fixation duration, and saccade amplitude were analyzed. Visual abilities were assessed through tasks measuring visual working memory, peripheral vision, and near-far accommodation. Gymnasts exhibited significantly longer fixation duration compared to soccer players for single object stimuli. Gymnasts also showed longer total fixation duration compared to both soccer and esports athletes. Esports athletes demonstrated faster mean reaction times in the near-far accommodation task compared to gymnasts. The findings indicate that sport-specific visual demands influence eye movement patterns and performance. The gymnasts exhibited detailed visual analysis, while the soccer players prioritized rapid scanning. The esports athletes demonstrated superior near-far accommodation. This paper presents a compact sensor system for estimating the dielectric properties of materials based on commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) modules. The dielectric constant and conductivity of a material under test can be determined from the measurement of the microwave reflected from the material. By using dual microwave sensor modules with a slightly different radio frequency, an identical intermediate frequency at the mixers of the modules was obtained. The intermediate frequency was chosen such that the associated microwave and data processing components could be easily obtainable, leading to a practical realization of the sensor system. Synchronization of the two microwave sensor modules was achieved using electronically controlled relays that simultaneously switch on the power supplies of both modules. Two microcontrollers were used to capture the corresponding signals. The sensor was designed at a 10 GHz band for measuring reflected waves from various kinds of materials, especially soils with different moisture and fertilizer contents. The evaluation results indicate a good agreement between the measured results from the proposed sensor and the ones from a network analyzer, verifying that the proposed sensor is fully functional for monitoring variation in the dielectric properties of materials, including soil. The average sensitivity for the dielectric constant of moist soil is 0.26/% moisture content and the error rate for dielectric constant measurement is 4.83%.

SARS-CoV-2 virus infection has imposed a significant healthcare burden globally. To contain its spread and decrease infection-related mortality, several vaccines have been deployed worldwide in the past 3 years. We conducted a cross-sectional seroprevalence study to assess the immune response against the virus among blood donors at a tertiary care hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. From December 2021 to March 2022, total of 1,520 participants were enrolled, and their past history of SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination was recorded. Two serology test, namely, quantitative IgG spike protein (IgGSP) and qualitative IgG nucleocapsid antibody (IgGNC) were performed. The median age of study participants was 40 years (IQR 30-48) and 833 (54.8%) were men. Vaccine uptake was reported in 1,500 donors (98.7%) and 84 (5.5%) reported the past infection history. IgGNC was detected in 46/84 donors with the past infection history (54.8%) and in 36 out of the rest 1,436 (2.5%) with no past history. IgGSP positivity was observed in 1484 donors (97.6%). When compared to unvaccinated donors (n = 20), IgGSP level was higher in the donors who had received one vaccine dose (p< 0.001) and these antibody levels increased significantly among those with 3rd and 4th vaccine doses. Factors associated with low IgGSP (lowest quartile) by multivariate analysis included: no past infection history, homologous vaccination, < 3 vaccine doses, and > 90 days duration since last vaccination. In conclusion, vaccine uptake among our study donors was high (98.7%) and IgGSP antibody was observed in nearly all the vaccinated donors (97.6%). Previous SARS-CoV-2 infection, use of heterologous vaccination, vaccines ≥ 3 doses, and duration of the last vaccination >90 days affected IgGSP levels. Use of serological assays were found beneficial in the evaluation and differentiation of immune response to vaccination, and natural infection including the identification of previous asymptomatic infections.

This research aims to study satisfaction in online teaching management using Google Classroom of 1st year student at Siam Technology College. It is survey-based research. By the sample group used consists of 120 first-year students who are enrolled in the Evolution of Science and cognitive learning and Introduction to Multidisciplinary courses for the academic year 2023. The research Instrument is a satisfaction questionnaire regarding online teaching management via Google Classroom. It consists of three parts: Part 1 surveys students' satisfaction with online teaching management through Google Classroom; Part 2 surveys students' satisfaction with the ease of access to Google Classroom; Part 3 collects additional comments and suggestions from students regarding their satisfaction with online teaching management through Google Classroom. The result of this research indicate that students are highly satisfied with the online teaching and learning management provided through Google Classroom. Overall, the satisfaction level is high, with an average score of 4.26 and a standard deviation of 0.39. In terms of the ease of access to Google Classroom, the satisfaction level is also high, with an average score of 4.30 and a standard deviation of 0.40. Purpose. This study aimed to identify proper exposure techniques to maintain optimal diagnostic image quality with minimum radiation dose for anteroposterior chest X-ray projection in pediatric patients. Methods. Briefly, an in-house developed pediatric chest phantom was constructed. Next, nanodot OSLDs were used for organ absorbed dose measurement and placed in the lung area, and the phantom was exposed to various exposure techniques (ranging from 50 to 70 kVp with 1.6, 2, and 2.5 mAs). After that, the phantom was used to assess image quality parameters, including SNR and CNR. Two radiologists assessed the subjective image quality using a visual grading analysis (VGA) technique. Finally, the figure of merit (FOM) was analyzed. Results. The developed phantom was constructed successfully and could be useful for dose measurement and image quality assessment. The absorbed dose varied from 0.009 to 0.031 mGy for the range of exposure techniques used. SNR and CNR showed a gradually increasing trend, while kVp and mAs values were increased. Water pollution is a serious concern for developing and undeveloped countries. Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants is an effective degradation method to restrain the green ecosystem. This research article presents a green, low-cost, and benevolent eco-friendly biosynthesis of cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanoparticles using Curcuma longa plant extract. The UV and visible region absorbance of Co3O4 nanoparticles estimated the Co2+ and Co3+ transitions on the lattice oxygen, and their bandgap of 2.2 eV was confirmed from the UV-DRS spectroscopy. The cubic structure and spherical shape of Co3O4 nanoparticles were estimated by using XRD and TEM characterizations. Plant molecules aggregation and their agglomerations on the nanoparticles were established from FTIR and EDX spectroscopy. Multiple cobalt valences on the oxygen surfaces and their reaction, bonding, and binding energies were analyzed from XPS measurements. The biogenic Co3O4 nanoparticles were executed against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus—S. aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli—E. coli) bacteria. A gram-positive bacterial strain exhibited great resistivity on Co3O4 nanoparticles. Degradation of organic dye pollutants on the Co3O4 nanoparticles was performed against methylene blue (MB) dye under the conditions of visible light irradiation. Dye degradation efficiency pseudo-first-order kinetics on the pseudo-first-order kinetics denotes the rate of degradation over the MB dye. This research work achieved enhanced degradation potency against toxic organic dye and their radicals are excited from visible light irradiations. Absorption light and charged particle recombinations are reformed and provoked by the plant extract bio-molecules. In this process, there is no inferior yield development, and electrons are robustly stimulated. Furthermore, the biosynthesized Co3O4 nanoparticles determined the potency of bacterial susceptibility and catalytic efficacy over the industrial dye pollutants.

The green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles is an efficient, simple, and chemical-free method of producing nanoparticles. The present work reports the synthesis of Murraya koenigii-mediated ZrO2 nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs) and their applications as a photocatalyst and antibacterial agent. Capping and stabilization of metal oxide nanoparticles were achieved by using Murraya koenigii leaf extract. The optical, structural, and morphological valance of the ZrO2 NPs were characterized using UV-DRS, FTIR, XRD, and FESEM with EDX, TEM, and XPS. An XRD analysis determined that ZrO2 NPs have a monoclinic structure and a crystallite size of 24 nm. TEM and FESEM morphological images confirm the spherical nature of ZrO2 NPs, and their distributions on surfaces show lower agglomerations. ZrO2 NPs showed high optical absorbance in the UV region and a wide bandgap indicating surface oxygen vacancies and charge carriers. The presence of Zr and O elements and their O=Zr=O bonds was categorized using EDX and FTIR spectroscopy. The plant molecules’ interface, bonding, binding energy, and their existence on the surface of ZrO2 NPs were established from XPS analysis. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue using ZrO2 NPs was examined under visible light irradiation. The 94% degradation of toxic MB dye was achieved within 20 min. The antibacterial inhibition of ZrO2 NPs was tested against S. aureus and E. coli pathogens. Applications of bio-synthesized ZrO2 NPs including organic substance removal, pathogenic inhibitor development, catalysis, optical, and biomedical development were explored.

Blood compatibility is a key requirement to fulfil for intravenous administration of drug and oxygen carrier system. Recently, we published the fabrication of oxidised-dextran (Odex)-crosslinked protein particles by one-pot formulation. In the current study we investigate the haemocompatibility of these Odex - particles including albumin particles (Odex-APs) and haemoglobin particles (Odex-HbMPs). Odex-APs and Odex-HbMPs have a submicron size ranged 800–1000 nm with peanut-like shape and a negative surface charge. In vitro haemocompatibility assays included haemolysis test, indirect phagocytosis test and platelet activation test in human blood. Odex-APs and Odex-HbMPs did not provoke any undesirable effects on the blood cells. Firstly, the ratio of haemolysis after contacted with Odex-crosslinked protein particles were less than 5% and therefore the particles may be considered non-haemolytic. Secondly, the incubation of leukocyte with Odex-APs/HbMPs did not influence the phagocytosis of leukocyte. We conclude that our particles are not recognized by monocytes or granulocytes. Finally, exposure of Odex-APs/HbMPs to platelets did not cause an activation of platelets. Additionally, Odex-HbMP/AP did not enhance or attenuate agonist-induced platelet activation. We conclude that Odex-crosslinked protein particles exhibit a very good haemocompatibility and represent highly promising carriers for drugs or oxygen.

Introduction: Frequent HIV testing of at-risk individuals is crucial to detect and treat infections early and prevent transmissions. We assessed the effect of reminders on HIV retesting uptake. Methods: The study was conducted within a programme involving four facilities providing free-of-charge HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C testing and counselling in northern Thailand. Individuals found HIV negative and identified at risk by counsellors were invited to participate in a three-arm, open-label, randomized, controlled trial comparing: (a) 'No Appointment & No Reminder' (control arm); (b) 'No Appointment but Reminder': short message service (SMS) sent 24 weeks after the enrolment visit to remind booking an appointment, and sent again one week later if no appointment was booked; and (c) 'Appointment & Reminder': appointment scheduled during the enrolment visit and SMS sent one week before appointment to ask for confirmation; if no response: single call made within one business day. The primary endpoint was a HIV retest within seven months after the enrolment visit. The cost of each reminder strategy was calculated as the sum of the following costs in United States dollars (USD): time spent by participants, counsellors and hotline staff; phone calls made; and SMS sent. The target sample size was 217 participants per arm (651 overall). Results: Between April and November 2017, 651 participants were randomized. The proportion presenting for HIV retesting within seven months was 11.2% (24/215) in the control arm, versus 19.3% (42/218) in 'No Appointment but Reminder' (p = 0.023) and 36.7% (80/218) in 'Appointment & Reminder' (p < 0.001). Differences in proportions compared to the control arm were respectively +8.1% (95% CI: +1.4% to +14.8%) and +25.5% (+17.9% to +33.2%). The incremental cost-effectiveness ratios of 'No Appointment but Reminder' and 'Appointment & Reminder' compared to the control arm were respectively USD 0.05 and USD 0.14 per participant for each 5% increase in HIV retesting uptake within seven months. Conclusions: Scheduling an appointment and sending a reminder one week before was a simple, easy-to-implement and affordable intervention that significantly increased HIV retesting uptake in these at-risk individuals. ObjectivesTo assess the influence of body weight and missed doses on lopinavir pharmacokinetics with standard and increased doses of lopinavir/ritonavir melt extrusion tablets during late pregnancy.Patients and methodsLopinavir concentration data during the third trimester of pregnancy were pooled from clinical trials in Thailand (NCT00409591) and the USA (NCT00042289). A total of 154 HIV-infected pregnant women receiving either 400/100 mg (standard) or 600/150 mg (increased) twice daily had lopinavir plasma concentration data available. Population parameters were estimated using non-linear mixed-effects regression models. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to estimate the probability of achieving target lopinavir trough concentrations (>1.0 mg/L) with standard and increased doses of lopinavir/ritonavir during pregnancy.ResultsThe median (range) age, weight and gestational age were 28 years (18-43), 62 kg (45-123) and 33 weeks (29-38), respectively. Body weight influenced lopinavir oral clearance (CL/F) and volume of distribution (V/F). Population estimates of lopinavir CL/F and V/F were 6.21 L/h/70 kg and 52.6 L/70 kg, respectively. Based on simulations, the highest risk of subtherapeutic trough concentrations was for women weighing >100 kg using the standard dose (∼ 7%), while the risk was 100 kg and with a history of lopinavir/ritonavir use and/or adherence issues.

Background : The efficacy of combined diuretic treatment in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is not known. Methods : In a single-center, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial, we randomly assigned 51 adult CAPD patients to receive furosemide 1,000 mg/day, hydrochlorothiazide 100 mg/day, and spironolactone 50 mg/day (triple diuretics [TD] group) or furosemide 1,000 mg/day plus placebo (single diuretic [SD] group) for 6 months. The primary outcome was the difference in daily urine output at the 3rd and 6th month of the study compared to baseline (ΔUO) between the SD and TD group. Secondary outcomes were urinary sodium (UNa) and potassium (UK) excretion and overhydration (OH) measured by bioimpedance at 3 and 6 months compared to baseline (ΔUNa, ΔUK, and ΔOH, respectively) and daily glucose exposure (g/day). Results : Forty-three of 51 patients completed the 6-month trial. The ΔUO at 3 and 6 months was significantly higher in the TD group compared to the SD group (386.32 ± 733.92 mL/day vs. −136.25 ± 629.08 mL/day, P < 0.001, at 3 months; 311.58 ± 640.31 mL/day vs. 120.00 ± 624.07 mL/day, P < 0.001, at 6 months) but there was no significant difference in ΔUNa and ΔUK excretion. Hydration status was significantly better in the TD group (ΔOH 1.84 ± 2.27 L vs. 0.44 ± 1.62 L, P = 0.03, at 3 months; 1.49 ± 2.82 L vs. −0.48 ± 2.61 L, P = 0.02, at 6 months). There was no serious adverse event in this study. Conclusion : For end-stage renal disease patients on CAPD, the combination of furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, and spironolactone results in higher urine output and better volume control compared to furosemide alone.

There are an increasing number of patients with the HIV virus in Thailand. The opportunistic infections in these patients are tuberculosis, Cryptococcal meningitis and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. The hospitalization benefits of admission were critical in the process of assessing of the economy of Thai government's budget. The coverage reimbursements from the government are classified according the criteria of the Diagnostic related group or DRG. An attempt to compare the real benefits to Siriraj Hospital and the government reimbursements for treating HIV-related illness was made and will eventually lead to further eventually adjustable reimbursements.

The coprecipitation–cross-linking–dissolution (CCD) technique for protein submicron particle fabrication was improved by omitting one preparation step using the macromolecular cross-linker, periodate-oxidized dextran (Odex, M.W. of 40 and 70 kDa). The coprecipitation and cross-linking of haemoglobin (Hb) were combined in one single step since the cross-linker is incorporated into the inorganic template, MnCO3, together with the protein. After removal of the MnCO3 templates by EDTA, the amount of entrapped Hb was 60 to 70% of the initial amount. This technique provides deformable Hb submicron particles (HbMP) with narrow size distribution between 800 and 1000 nm, uniform morphology and negative zeta-potential. More than 40% of Hb in the particles was able to carry oxygen over a storage period of 90 days. The results suggest that our new protein submicron particle fabrication technique minimizes the fabrication time and is very efficient and cost-effective.
