Search

The high-precision X-ray diffraction setup for work with diamond anvil cells (DACs) in interaction chamber 2 (IC2) of the High Energy Density instrument of the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser is described. This includes beamline optics, sample positioning and detector systems located in the multipurpose vacuum chamber. Concepts for pump-probe X-ray diffraction experiments in the DAC are described and their implementation demonstrated during the First User Community Assisted Commissioning experiment. X-ray heating and diffraction of Bi under pressure, obtained using 20 fs X-ray pulses at 17.8 keV and 2.2 MHz repetition, is illustrated through splitting of diffraction peaks, and interpreted employing finite element modeling of the sample chamber in the DAC.

α-Glycine is studied up to 50 GPa using synchrotron angle-dispersive X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and quantum chemistry calculations performed at multiples levels of theory. Results from both XRD and Raman experiments reveal an extended pressure stability of the α phase up to 50 GPa and the room temperature (RT) equation of state (EOS) was determined up to this pressure. This extended stability is corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) based calculations using the USPEX evolutionary structural search algorithm. Two calculated EOSs, as determined by DFT at T = 0 K and semiempirical density functional tight-binding (DFTB) at RT, and the calculated Raman modes frequencies show a good agreement with the corresponding experimental results. Our work provides a definitive phase diagram and EOS for α-glycine up to 50 GPa, which informs prebiotic synthesis scenarios that can involve pressures well in excess of 10 GPa.

The high-pressure behavior of germanates is of interest as these compounds serve as analogs for silicates of the deep Earth. Current theoretical and experimental studies of iron germanate, FeGeO3, are limited. Here, we have examined the behavior of FeGeO3 to 127 GPa using the laser-heated diamond anvil cell combined with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Upon compression at room temperature, the ambient-pressure clinopyroxene phase transforms to a disordered triclinic phase [FeGeO3 (II)] at ~ 18 GPa in agreement with earlier studies. An additional phase transition to FeGeO3 (III) occurs above 54 GPa at room temperature. Laser-heating experiments (~ 1200–2200 K) were conducted at three pressures (33, 54, and 123 GPa) chosen to cover the stability regions of different GeO2 polymorphs. In all cases, we observe that FeGeO3 dissociates into GeO2 + FeO at high pressure and temperature conditions. Neither the perovskite nor the post-perovskite phase was observed up to 127 GPa at ambient or high temperatures. The results are consistent with the behavior of FeSiO3, which also dissociates into a mixture of the oxides (FeO + SiO2) at least up to 149 GPa.

In this paper, we discuss the occurrence of liebermannite (IMA 2013-128), KAlSi3O8, a new, shock-generated, high-pressure tetragonal hollandite-type structure silicate mineral, in the Zagami basaltic shergottite meteorite. Liebermannite crystallizes in space group I4/m with Z = 2, cell dimensions of a = 9.15 ± 0.14 (1σ) Å, c = 2.74 ± 0.13 Å, and a cell volume of 229 ± 19 Å3 (for the type material), as revealed by synchrotron diffraction. In Zagami, liebermannite likely formed via solid-state transformation of primary igneous K-feldspar during an impact event that achieved pressures of ~20 GPa or more. The mineral name is in honor of Robert C. Liebermann, a high-pressure mineral physicist at Stony Brook University, New York, USA.

Although the crystal structure of the high-pressure SiO2 polymorph stishovite has been studied in detail, little is known about the development of crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) during deformation in stishovite. Insight into CPO and associated deformation mechanics of stishovite would provide important information for understanding subduction of quartz-bearing crustal rocks into the mantle. To study CPO development, we converted a natural sample of flint to stishovite in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell and compressed the stishovite aggregate up to 38 GPa. We collected diffraction patterns in radial geometry to examine in situ development of crystallographic preferred orientation and find that (001) poles preferentially align with the compression direction. Viscoplastic self-consistent modeling suggests the most likely slip systems at high pressure and ambient temperature are pyramidal and basal slip.

Phase transitions in the mantle control its internal dynamics and structure. The post-spinel transition marks the upper-lower mantle boundary, where ringwoodite dissociates into bridgmanite plus ferropericlase, and its Clapeyron slope regulates mantle flow across it. This interaction has previously been assumed to have no lateral spatial variations, based on the assumption of a linear post-spinel boundary in pressure and temperature. Here we present laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments with synchrotron X-ray diffraction to better constrain this boundary, especially at higher temperatures. Combining our data with results from the literature, and using a global analysis based on machine learning, we find a pronounced nonlinearity in the post-spinel boundary, with its slope ranging from -4 MPa/K at 2100 K, to -2 MPa/K at 1950 K, and to 0 MPa/K at 1600 K. Changes in temperature over time and space can therefore cause the post-spinel transition to have variable effects on mantle convection and the movement of subducting slabs and upwelling plumes., Competing Interests: Competing interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (© 2025. High-energy-density materials (HEDMs) are crucial in various applications, from energy storage to defense technologies. Transition metal polynitrides are promising candidates for HEDMs. Using single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction, we investigated the crystal structures of niobium nitride, specifically Nb 2 N 3 and NbN 2 , under high-pressure conditions of up to 86 GPa. At higher pressures, niobium polynitrides NbN 4 and NbN 5 were observed to be stable from 100 to 120 GPa, which feature low-order nitrogen bonding. The low-order bonded nitrogen in NbN 4 and NbN 5 forms multiple polynitrogen anions at megabar pressure ranges. In the Nb-N system, we observed an increasing coordination number of metal-nitrogen as pressure increased. These structures were supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Raman spectroscopy.

Up to 17 GPa, the crystalline phases of N2 are characterized by pronounced orientational disorder, whereas the higher-pressure phases of molecular N2 are ordered. This raises the question about long-term relaxation of orientational disorder within the low- to intermediate-pressure regime. Here, this question is addressed by comparing synthetic with natural, chemically pure, solid N2 that resides as inclusions in diamonds at 300 K for about 108 years at pressures up to 11 GPa. It is shown that disorder prevails at 8.7 GPa, 300 K, where both synthetic and natural N2 assume the same structure. However, at 10.8 GPa, natural solid N2 exhibits monoclinic distortion and partial orientational ordering of the molecules, both of which are not observed in synthetic material. This difference is interpreted as the result of long-term structural relaxation. The ordering mechanism is examined and placed into the context of the δ- to ε-N2 transition. H 2 O transforms to two forms of superionic (SI) ice at high pressures and temperatures, which contain highly mobile protons within a solid oxygen sublattice. Yet the stability field of both phases remains debated. Here, we present the results of an ultrafast X-ray heating study utilizing MHz pulse trains produced by the European X-ray Free Electron Laser to create high temperature states of H 2 O, which were probed using X-ray diffraction during dynamic cooling. We confirm an isostructural transition during heating in the 26-69 GPa range, consistent with the formation of SI-bcc. In contrast to prior work, SI-fcc was observed exclusively above ~50 GPa, despite evidence of melting at lower pressures. The absence of SI-fcc in lower pressure runs is attributed to short heating timescales and the pressure-temperature path induced by the pump-probe heating scheme in which H 2 O was heated above its melting temperature before the observation of quenched crystalline states, based on the earlier theoretical prediction that SI-bcc nucleates more readily from the fluid than SI-fcc. Our results may have implications for the stability of SI phases in ice-rich planets, for example during dynamic freezing, where the preferential crystallization of SI-bcc may result in distinct physical properties across mantle ice layers., (© 2024. The germanosilicide Na 4- x Ge y Si 16- y (0.4 ≤ x ≤ 1.1, 4.7 ≤ y ≤ 9.3) was synthesized under high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. The novel guest-host compound comprises a unique tetrel framework with dual channels housing sodium and smaller, empty (Si,Ge) 9 units. The arrangement represents a new structure type with an overall structural topology that is closely related to a hypothetical carbon allotrope. Topological analysis of the structure revealed that the guest environment space cannot be tiled with singular polyhedra as in cage compounds (e.g., clathrates). The analysis of natural tilings provides a convenient method to unambiguously compare related tetrel-rich structures and can help elucidate new possible structural arrangements of intermetallic compounds.

In this study, we conducted a high-pressure investigation of Cu 2- x Se nanostructures with pyramid- and plate-like morphologies, created through cation exchange from zinc-blende CdSe nanocrystals and wurtzite CdSe nanoplatelets respectively. Using a diamond anvil cell setup at the APS synchrotron, we observed the phase transitions in the Cu 2- x Se nanostructures up to 40 GPa, identifying a novel CsCl-type lattice with Pm 3̅ m symmetry above 4 GPa. This CsCl-type structure, previously unreported in copper selenides, was partially retained after decompression. Our results indicate that the initial crystalline structure of CdSe does not affect the stability of Cu 2- x Se nanostructures formed via cation exchange. Both morphologies of Cu 2- x Se sintered under compression, potentially contributing to the stabilization of the high-pressure phase through interfacial defects. These findings are significant for discovering new phases with potential applications in future technologies.

In this study, we conduct extensive high-pressure experiments to investigate phase stability in the cobalt-nitrogen system. Through a combination of synthesis in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell, first-principles calculations, Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, we establish the stability fields of known high-pressure phases, hexagonal NiAs-type CoN, and marcasite-type CoN 2 within the pressure range of 50-90 GPa. We synthesize and characterize previously unknown nitrides, Co 3 N 2 , Pnma-CoN and two polynitrides, CoN 3 and CoN 5 , within the pressure range of 90-120 GPa. Both polynitrides exhibit novel types of polymeric nitrogen chains and networks. CoN 3 feature branched-type nitrogen trimers (N 3 ) and CoN 5 show π-bonded nitrogen chain. As the nitrogen content in the cobalt nitride increases, the CoN 6 polyhedral frameworks transit from face-sharing (in CoN) to edge-sharing (in CoN 2 and CoN 3 ), and finally to isolated (in CoN 5 ). Carbonates are important carbon-bearing phases in the mantle. While their role in upper mantle petrologic processes has been well studied, their effect on phase relations, melting, and transport properties in the lower mantle is less understood. The stability of carbonates in the mantle depends on a host of factors, including pressure, temperature, oxygen fugacity, and reactions with surrounding mantle phases. To understand the stability of carbonates in the presence of metal in the lower mantle, carbonate-metal reaction experiments on the Fe-Si-Ca-Mg-C-O system were conducted up to 124 GPa and 3200 K. We find that carbonates react with iron alloys to form silicates, iron carbides, and oxides. However, the temperature at which these reactions occur increases with pressure, indicating that along a geotherm in the lowermost mantle carbonates are the stable carbon-bearing phase. The reaction between PrO 2 and SiO 2 was investigated at various pressure points up to 29 GPa in a diamond anvil cell using laser heating and in situ single-crystal structure analysis. The pressure points at 5 and 10 GPa produced Pr 2 III (Si 2 O 7 ), whereas Pr 4 III Si 3 O 12 and Pr 2 IV (O 2 )O 3 were obtained at 15 GPa. Pr 4 III Si 3 O 12 can be interpreted as a high-pressure modification of the still unknown orthosilicate Pr 4 III (SiO 4 ) 3 . Pr IV Si 3 O 8 and Pr 2 IV Si 7 O 18 that contain praseodymium in its rare + IV oxidation state were identified at 29 GPa. After the pressure was released from the reaction chamber, the Pr(IV) silicates could be recovered, indicating that they are metastable at ambient pressure. Density functional theory calculations of the electronic structure corroborate the oxidation state of praseodymium in both Pr IV Si 3 O 8 and Pr 2 IV Si 7 O 18 . Both silicates are the first structurally characterized representatives of Pr 4+ -containing salts with oxoanions. All three silicates contain condensed networks of [SiO 6 ] octahedra which is unprecedented in the rich chemistry of lanthanoid silicates.

Compression of small molecules can induce solid-state reactions that are difficult or impossible under conventional, solution-phase conditions. Of particular interest is the topochemical-like reaction of arenes to produce polymeric nanomaterials. However, high reaction onset pressures and poor selectivity remain significant challenges. Herein, the incorporation of electron-withdrawing and -donating groups into π-stacked arenes is proposed as a strategy to reduce reaction barriers to cycloaddition and onset pressures. Nevertheless, competing side-chain reactions between functional groups represent alternative viable pathways. For the case of a diaminobenzene:tetracyanobenzene cocrystal, amidine formation between amine and cyano groups occurs prior to cycloaddition with an onset pressure near 9 GPa, as determined using vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and first-principles calculations. This work demonstrates that reduced-barrier cycloaddition reactions are theoretically possible via strategic functionalization; however, the incorporation of pendant groups may enable alternative reaction pathways. Controlled reactions between pendant groups represent an additional strategy for producing unique polymeric nanomaterials.

Many sub-Neptune exoplanets have been believed to be composed of a thick hydrogen-dominated atmosphere and a high-temperature heavier-element-dominant core. From an assumption that there is no chemical reaction between hydrogen and silicates/metals at the atmosphere-interior boundary, the cores of sub-Neptunes have been modeled with molten silicates and metals (magma) in previous studies. In large sub-Neptunes, pressure at the atmosphere-magma boundary can reach tens of gigapascals where hydrogen is a dense liquid. A recent experiment showed that hydrogen can induce the reduction of Fe[Formula: see text] in (Mg,Fe)O to Fe[Formula: see text] metal at the pressure-temperature conditions relevant to the atmosphere-interior boundary. However, it is unclear whether Mg, one of the abundant heavy elements in the planetary interiors, remains oxidized or can be reduced by H. Our experiments in the laser-heated diamond-anvil cell found that heating of MgO + Fe to 3,500 to 4,900 K (close to or above their melting temperatures) in an H medium leads to the formation of Mg[Formula: see text]FeH[Formula: see text] and H[Formula: see text]O at 8 to 13 GPa. At 26 to 29 GPa, the behavior of the system changes, and Mg-H in an H fluid and H[Formula: see text]O were detected with separate FeH[Formula: see text]. The observations indicate the dissociation of the Mg-O bond by H and subsequent production of hydride and water. Therefore, the atmosphere-magma interaction can lead to a fundamentally different mineralogy for sub-Neptune exoplanets compared with rocky planets. Externally heated diamond anvil cells provide a stable and uniform thermal environment, making them a versatile device to simultaneously generate high-pressure and high-temperature conditions in various fields of research, such as condensed matter physics, materials science, chemistry, and geosciences. The present study features the Externally Heated Diamond ANvil Cell Experimentation (EH-DANCE) system, a versatile configuration consisting of a diamond anvil cell with a customized microheater for stable resistive heating, bidirectional pressure control facilitated by compression and decompression membranes, and a water-cooled enclosure suitable for vacuum and controlled atmospheres. This integrated system excels with its precise control of both pressure and temperature for mineral and materials science research under extreme conditions. We showcase the capabilities of the system through its successful application in the investigation of the melting temperature and thermal equation of state of high-pressure ice-VII at temperatures up to 1400 K. The system was also used to measure the elastic properties of solid ice-VII and liquid H2O using Brillouin scattering and Raman spectra of carbonates using Raman spectroscopy, highlighting the potential of the EH-DANCE system in high-pressure research., (© 2023 Author(s). The high-pressure melting curve of FeO controls key aspects of Earth's deep interior and the evolution of rocky planets more broadly. However, existing melting studies on wüstite were conducted across a limited pressure range and exhibit substantial disagreement. Here we use an in-situ dual-technique approach that combines a suite of >1000 x-ray diffraction and synchrotron Mössbauer measurements to report the melting curve for Fe 1-x O wüstite to pressures of Earth's lowermost mantle. We further observe features in the data suggesting an order-disorder transition in the iron defect structure several hundred kelvin below melting. This solid-solid transition, suggested by decades of ambient pressure research, is detected across the full pressure range of the study (30 to 140 GPa). At 136 GPa, our results constrain a relatively high melting temperature of 4140 ± 110 K, which falls above recent temperature estimates for Earth's present-day core-mantle boundary and supports the viability of solid FeO-rich structures at the roots of mantle plumes. The coincidence of the defect order-disorder transition with pressure-temperature conditions of Earth's mantle base raises broad questions about its possible influence on key physical properties of the region, including rheology and conductivity., (© 2023. The allotropy of solid molecular nitrogen is the consequence of a complex interplay between fundamental intermolecular as well as intramolecular interactions. Understanding the underlying physical mechanisms hinges on knowledge of the crystal structures of these molecular phases. That is especially true for ζ-N 2 , key to shed light on nitrogen's polymerization. Here, we perform single-crystal X-ray diffraction on laser-heated N 2 samples at 54, 63, 70 and 86 GPa and solve and refine the hitherto unknown structure of ζ-N 2 . In its monoclinic unit cell (space group C2/c), 16 N 2 molecules are arranged in a configuration similar to that of ε-N 2 . The structure model provides an explanation for the previously identified Raman and infrared lattice and vibrational modes of ζ-N 2 . Density functional theory calculations give an insight into the gradual delocalization of electronic density from intramolecular bonds to intermolecular space and suggest a possible pathway towards nitrogen's polymerization., (© 2023. An experimental platform for dynamic diamond anvil cell (dDAC) research has been developed at the High Energy Density (HED) Instrument at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (European XFEL). Advantage was taken of the high repetition rate of the European XFEL (up to 4.5 MHz) to collect pulse-resolved MHz X-ray diffraction data from samples as they are dynamically compressed at intermediate strain rates (≤10 3  s -1 ), where up to 352 diffraction images can be collected from a single pulse train. The set-up employs piezo-driven dDACs capable of compressing samples in ≥340 µs, compatible with the maximum length of the pulse train (550 µs). Results from rapid compression experiments on a wide range of sample systems with different X-ray scattering powers are presented. A maximum compression rate of 87 TPa s -1 was observed during the fast compression of Au, while a strain rate of ∼1100 s -1 was achieved during the rapid compression of N 2 at 23 TPa s -1 ., (open access.)

The amorphous selenium (a-Se) was studied via x-ray diffraction (XRD) under pressures ranging from ambient pressure up to 30 GPa at room temperature to study its high-pressure behavior. Two compressional experiments on a-Se samples, with and without heat treatment, respectively, were conducted. Contrary to the previous reports that a-Se crystallized abruptly at around 12 GPa, in this work we report an early partially crystallized state at 4.9 GPa before completing the crystallization at around 9.5 GPa based on in-situ high pressure XRD measurements on the a-Se with 70 °C heat treatment. In comparison, crystallization pressure on another a-Se sample without thermal treatment history was observed to be 12.7 GPa, consistent with the previously reported crystallization pressure. Thus, it is proposed in this work that prior heat treatment of a-Se can result in an earlier crystallization under high pressure, which helps to understand the possible mechanism caused by the previous controversial reports on pressure induced crystallization behavior in a-Se., (© 2023 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Compared with conventional, solution-phase approaches, solid-state reaction methods can provide unique access to novel synthetic targets. Nanothreads-one-dimensional diamondoid polymers formed through the compression of small molecules-represent a new class of materials produced via solid-state reactions, however, the formation of chemically homogeneous products with targeted functionalization represents a persistent challenge. Through careful consideration of molecular precursor stacking geometry and functionalization, we report here the scalable synthesis of chemically homogeneous, functionalized nanothreads through the solid-state polymerization of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid. The resulting product possesses high-density, pendant carboxyl functionalization along both sides of the backbone, enabling new opportunities for the post-synthetic processing and chemical modification of nanothread materials applicable to a broad range of potential applications., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Seismic studies have found fine-scale anomalies at the core-mantle boundary (CMB), such as ultralow velocity zones (ULVZs) 1,2 and the core rigidity zone 3,4 . ULVZs have been attributed to mantle-related processes 5-10 , but little is known about a possible core origin. The precipitation of light elements in the outer core has been proposed to explain the core rigidity zone 3 , but it remains unclear what processes can lead to such precipitation. Despite its importance for the outer core 11 , the melting behaviour of Fe-Si-H at relevant pressure-temperature conditions is not well understood. Here we report observations of the crystallization of B2 FeSi from Fe-9wt%Si melted in the presence of hydrogen up to 125 GPa and 3,700 K by using laser-heated diamond anvil cells. Hydrogen dramatically increases the Si concentration in the B2 crystals to a molar ratio of Si:Fe ≈ 1, whereas it mostly remains in the coexisting Fe liquid. The high Si content in the B2 phase makes it stable in a solid form at the outermost core temperatures and less dense than the surrounding liquids. Consequently, the Si-rich crystallites could form, float and be sedimented to the underside of the CMB interface, and that well explains the core side rigidity anomalies 3,4 . If a small amount of the FeSi crystals can be incorporated into the mantle, they would form dense low-velocity structures above the CMB, which may account for some ULVZs 10 . The B2 FeSi precipitation promoted by H in the outermost core provides a single core-driven origin for two types of anomalies at the CMB. Such a scenario could also explain the core-like tungsten isotope signatures in ocean island basalts 12 , after the materials equilibrated with the precipitates are entrained to the uppermost mantle by the mantle plumes connected to ULVZs., (© 2023. Sodium chloride is expected to be found on many of the surfaces of icy moons like Europa and Ganymede. However, spectral identification remains elusive as the known NaCl-bearing phases cannot match current observations, which require higher number of water of hydration. Working at relevant conditions for icy worlds, we report the characterization of three "hyperhydrated" sodium chloride (SC) hydrates, and refined two crystal structures [2NaCl·17H 2 O (SC8.5); NaCl·13H 2 O (SC13)]. We found that the dissociation of Na + and Cl - ions within these crystal lattices allows for the high incorporation of water molecules and thus explain their hyperhydration. This finding suggests that a great diversity of hyperhydrated crystalline phases of common salts might be found at similar conditions. Thermodynamic constraints indicate that SC8.5 is stable at room pressure below 235 K, and it could be the most abundant NaCl hydrate on icy moon surfaces like Europa, Titan, Ganymede, Callisto, Enceladus, or Ceres. The finding of these hyperhydrated structures represents a major update to the H 2 O-NaCl phase diagram. These hyperhydrated structures provide an explanation for the mismatch between the remote observations of the surface of Europa and Ganymede and previously available data on NaCl solids. It also underlines the urgent need for mineralogical exploration and spectral data on hyperhydrates at relevant conditions to help future icy world exploration by space missions.

The recent progress in generating static pressures up to terapascal values opens opportunities for studying novel materials with unusual properties, such as metallization of hydrogen and high-temperature superconductivity. However, an evaluation of pressure above ~0.3 terapascal is a challenge. We report a universal high-pressure scale up to ~0.5 terapascal, which is based on the shift of the Raman edge of stressed diamond anvils correlated with the equation of state of Au and does not require an additional pressure sensor. According to the new scale, the pressure values are substantially lower by 20% at ~0.5 terapascal compared to the extrapolation of the existing scales. We compare the available data of H 2 at the highest static pressures. We show that the onset of the proposed metallization of molecular hydrogen reported by different groups is consistent when corrected with the new scale and can be compared with various theoretical predictions., (© 2023. Oxygen and iron are the most abundant elements on Earth, and their compounds are key planet-forming components. While oxygen is pervasive in the mantle, its presence in the solid inner core is still debatable. Yet, this issue is critical to understanding the co-evolution and the geomagnetic field generation. Thus far, iron monoxide (FeO) is the only known stoichiometric compound in the Fe-FeO system, and the existence of iron-rich Fe n O compounds has long been speculated. Here, we report that iron reacts with FeO and Fe 2 O 3 at 220-260 GPa and 3000-3500 K in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. Ab initio structure searches using the adaptive genetic algorithm indicate that a series of stable stoichiometric Fe n O compounds (with n > 1) can be formed. Like ε-Fe and B8-FeO, Fe n O compounds have close-packed layered structures featuring oxygen-only single layers separated by iron-only layers. Two solid-solution models with compositions close to Fe 2 O, the most stable Fe-rich phase identified, explain the X-ray diffraction patterns of the experimental reaction products quenched to room temperature. These results suggest that Fe-rich Fe n O compounds with close-packed layered motifs might be stable under inner core conditions. Future studies of the elastic, rheological, and thermal transport properties of these more anisotropic Fe n O solids should provide new insights into the seismic features of the inner core, inner core formation process and composition, and the thermal evolution of the planet., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (© 2022 The Authors.)

Transition metal borides are known due to their attractive mechanical, electronic, refractive, and other properties. A new class of rhenium borides was identified by synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments in laser-heated diamond anvil cells between 26 and 75 GPa. Recoverable to ambient conditions, compounds rhenium triboride (ReB 3 ) and rhenium tetraboride (ReB 4 ) consist of close-packed single layers of rhenium atoms alternating with boron networks built from puckered hexagonal layers, which link short bonded (∼1.7 Å) axially oriented B 2 dumbbells. The short and incompressible Re-B and B-B bonds oriented along the hexagonal c -axis contribute to low axial compressibility comparable with the linear compressibility of diamond. Sub-millimeter samples of ReB 3 and ReB 4 were synthesized in a large-volume press at pressures as low as 33 GPa and used for material characterization. Crystals of both compounds are metallic and hard (Vickers hardness, H V = 34(3) GPa). Water is an essential chemical compound for living organisms, and twenty of its different crystal solid forms (ices) are known. Still, there are many fundamental problems with these structures such as establishing the correct positions and thermal motions of hydrogen atoms. The list of ice structures is not yet complete as DFT calculations have suggested the existence of additional and - to date - unknown phases. In many ice structures, neither neutron diffraction nor DFT calculations nor X-ray diffraction methods can easily solve the problem of hydrogen atom disorder or accurately determine their anisotropic displacement parameters (ADPs). Here, accurate crystal structures of H 2 O, D 2 O and mixed (50%H 2 O/50%D 2 O) ice VI obtained by Hirshfeld atom refinement (HAR) of high-pressure single-crystal synchrotron and laboratory X-ray diffraction data are presented. It was possible to obtain O-H/D bond lengths and ADPs for disordered hydrogen atoms which are in good agreement with the corresponding single-crystal neutron diffraction data. These results show that HAR combined with X-ray diffraction can compete with neutron diffraction in detailed studies of polymorphic forms of ice and crystals of other hydrogen-rich compounds. As neutron diffraction is relatively expensive, requires larger crystals which can be difficult to obtain and access to neutron facilities is restricted, cheaper and more accessible X-ray measurements combined with HAR can facilitate the verification of the existing ice polymorphs and the quest for new ones., (© Michal L. Polynitrogen molecules are attractive for high-energy-density materials due to energy stored in nitrogen-nitrogen bonds; however, it remains challenging to find energy-efficient synthetic routes and stabilization mechanisms for these compounds. Direct synthesis from molecular dinitrogen requires overcoming large activation barriers and the reaction products are prone to inherent inhomogeneity. Here we report the synthesis of planar N 6 2- hexazine dianions, stabilized in K 2 N 6 , from potassium azide (KN 3 ) on laser heating in a diamond anvil cell at pressures above 45 GPa. The resulting K 2 N 6 , which exhibits a metallic lustre, remains metastable down to 20 GPa. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were used to identify this material, through good agreement with the theoretically predicted structural, vibrational and electronic properties for K 2 N 6 . The N 6 2- rings characterized here are likely to be present in other high-energy-density materials stabilized by pressure. While most of the rare-earth metals readily form trihydrides, due to increased stability of the filled 4f electronic shell for Yb(II), only YbH 2.67 , formally corresponding to Yb II (Yb III H 4 ) 2 (or Yb 3 H 8 ), remains the highest hydride of ytterbium. Utilizing the diamond anvil cell methodology and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, we have attempted to push this limit further via hydrogenation of metallic Yb and Yb 3 H 8 . Compression of the latter has also been investigated in a neutral pressure-transmitting medium (PTM). While the in situ heating of Yb facilitates the formation of YbH 2+ x hydrides, we have not observed clear qualitative differences between the systems compressed in H 2 and He or Ne PTM. In all of these cases, a sequence of phase transitions occurred within ca. 13-18 GPa ( P 3̅1 m - I 4/ m phase) and around 27 GPa (to the I 4/ mmm phase). The molecular volume of the systems compressed in H 2 PTM is ca. 1.5% larger than of those compressed in inert gases, suggesting a small hydrogen uptake. Nevertheless, hydrogenation toward YbH 3 is incomplete, and polyhydrides do not form up to the highest pressure studied here ( ca. 75 GPa). As pointed out by electronic transport measurements, the mixed-valence Yb 3 H 8 retains its semiconducting character up to >50 GPa, although the very low remnant activation energy of conduction (<5 meV) suggests that metallization under further compression should be achievable. Finally, we provide a theoretical description of a hypothetical stoichiometric YbH 3 .

In the last few years, the superconducting transition temperature, T c , of hydrogen-rich compounds has increased dramatically, and is now approaching room temperature. However, the pressures at which these materials are stable exceed one million atmospheres and limit the number of available experimental studies. Superconductivity in hydrides has been primarily explored by electrical transport measurements, whereas magnetic properties, one of the most important characteristic of a superconductor, have not been satisfactory defined. Here, we develop SQUID magnetometry under extreme high-pressure conditions and report characteristic superconducting parameters for Im-3m-H 3 S and Fm-3m-LaH 10 -the representative members of two families of high-temperature superconducting hydrides. We determine a lower critical field H c1 of ∼0.82 T and ∼0.55 T, and a London penetration depth λ L of ∼20 nm and ∼30 nm in H 3 S and LaH 10 , respectively. The small values of λ L indicate a high superfluid density in both hydrides. These compounds have the values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ ∼12-20 and belong to the group of "moderate" type II superconductors, rather than being hard superconductors as would be intuitively expected from their high T c s., (© 2022. Mg 2 GeO 4 is important as an analog for the ultrahigh-pressure behavior of Mg 2 SiO 4 , a major component of planetary interiors. In this study, we have investigated magnesium germanate to 275 GPa and over 2,000 K using a laser-heated diamond anvil cell combined with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) computations. The experimental results are consistent with the formation of a phase with disordered Mg and Ge, in which germanium adopts eightfold coordination with oxygen: the cubic, Th 3 P 4 -type structure. DFT computations suggest partial Mg-Ge order, resulting in a tetragonal [Formula: see text] structure indistinguishable from [Formula: see text] Th 3 P 4 in our experiments. Nanothreads are one-dimensional nanomaterials composed of a primarily sp 3 hydrocarbon backbone, typically formed through the compression of small molecules to high pressures. Although nanothreads have been synthesized from a range of precursors, controlling reaction pathways to produce atomically precise materials remains a difficult challenge. Here, we show how heteroatoms within precursors can serve as "thread-directing" groups by selecting for specific cycloaddition reaction pathways. By using a less-reactive diazine group within a six-membered aromatic ring, we successfully predict and synthesize the first carbon nanothread material derived from pyridazine (1,2-diazine, C 4 H 4 N 2 ). Compared with previous nanothreads, the synthesized polypyridazine, shows a predominantly uniform chemical structure with exceptional long-range order, allowing for structural characterization using vibrational spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results demonstrate how thread-directing groups can be used for reaction pathway control and the formation of chemically precise nanothreads with a high degree of structural order.

A series of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were carried out, combined with first-principles calculations, to study structural phase transitions of selenium at high pressures and room temperature. Several phase transitions were observed, among which an isostructural phase transition was found at around 120 GPa for the first time. Evolved from the rhombohedral (space group R 3 m ) structure (Se-V), the new phase (Se-V') exhibited an interesting increase of lattice parameter a at pressures from 120 to 148 GPa, known as negative linear compressibility (NLC). The discovery of NLC behavior observed in this work is mainly attributed to the accuracy and fine steps controlled by the membrane system for in situ XRD data collected with an exposure time of 0.5 s. After 140 GPa, a body-centered cubic (b.c.c.) structure Se-VI (space group Im 3 m ) was formed, which remains stable up to 210 GPa, the highest pressure achieved in this study. The bulk moduli of phases Se-V, Se-V' and Se-VI were estimated to be 83 ± 2, 321 ± 2 and 266 ± 7 GPa, respectively, according to the P - V curve fit by the third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state. The Se-V' phase shows a bulk modulus almost 4 times larger than that of the Se-V phase, which is mainly due to the effect of its NLC. NLC in a higher pressure range is always more significant in terms of fundamental mechanism and new materials discovery, yet it has barely been reported at pressures above 100 GPa. Light elements in Earth's core play a key role in driving convection and influencing geodynamics, both of which are crucial to the geodynamo. However, the thermal transport properties of iron alloys at high-pressure and -temperature conditions remain uncertain. Here we investigate the transport properties of solid hexagonal close-packed and liquid Fe-Si alloys with 4.3 and 9.0 wt % Si at high pressure and temperature using laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments and first-principles molecular dynamics and dynamical mean field theory calculations. In contrast to the case of Fe, Si impurity scattering gradually dominates the total scattering in Fe-Si alloys with increasing Si concentration, leading to temperature independence of the resistivity and less electron-electron contribution to the conductivity in Fe-9Si. Our results show a thermal conductivity of ∼100 to 110 W⋅m -1 ⋅K -1 for liquid Fe-9Si near the topmost outer core. If Earth's core consists of a large amount of silicon (e.g., > 4.3 wt %) with such a high thermal conductivity, a subadiabatic heat flow across the core-mantle boundary is likely, leaving a 400- to 500-km-deep thermally stratified layer below the core-mantle boundary, and challenges proposed thermal convection in Fe-Si liquid outer core., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest., (Copyright © 2021 the Author(s). The possibility of high, room-temperature superconductivity was predicted for metallic hydrogen in the 1960s. However, metallization and superconductivity of hydrogen are yet to be unambiguously demonstrated and may require pressures as high as 5 million atmospheres. Rare earth based "superhydrides", such as LaH 10 , can be considered as a close approximation of metallic hydrogen even though they form at moderately lower pressures. In superhydrides the predominance of H-H metallic bonds and high superconducting transition temperatures bear the hallmarks of metallic hydrogen. Still, experimental studies revealing the key factors controlling their superconductivity are scarce. Here, we report the pressure and magnetic field dependence of the superconducting order observed in LaH 10 . We determine that the high-symmetry high-temperature superconducting Fm-3m phase of LaH 10 can be stabilized at substantially lower pressures than previously thought. We find a remarkable correlation between superconductivity and a structural instability indicating that lattice vibrations, responsible for the monoclinic structural distortions in LaH 10 , strongly affect the superconducting coupling., (© 2021. We have performed a combined experimental and theoretical study of ethane and methane at high pressures of up to 120 GPa at 300 K using x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopies and the USPEX ab initio evolutionary structural search algorithm, respectively. For ethane, we have determined the crystallization point, for room temperature, at 2.7 GPa and also the low pressure crystal structure (phase A). This crystal structure is orientationally disordered (plastic phase) and deviates from the known crystal structures for ethane at low temperatures. Moreover, a pressure induced phase transition has been identified, for the first time, at 13.6 GPa to a monoclinic phase B, the structure of which is solved based on good agreement with the experimental results and theoretical predictions. For methane, our x-ray diffraction measurements are in agreement with the previously reported high-pressure structures and equation of state (EOS). We have determined the EOSs of ethane and methane, which provides a solid basis for the discussion of their relative stability at high pressures.

A laser heating system for samples confined in diamond anvil cells paired with in situ X-ray diffraction measurements at the Extreme Conditions Beamline of PETRA III is presented. The system features two independent laser configurations (on-axis and off-axis of the X-ray path) allowing for a broad range of experiments using different designs of diamond anvil cells. The power of the continuous laser source can be modulated for use in various pulsed laser heating or flash heating applications. An example of such an application is illustrated here on the melting curve of iron at megabar pressures. The optical path of the spectroradiometry measurements is simulated with ray-tracing methods in order to assess the level of present aberrations in the system and the results are compared with other systems, that are using simpler lens optics. Based on the ray-tracing the choice of the first achromatic lens and other aspects for accurate temperature measurements are evaluated., (open access.)

High-pressure nitrogen chemistry has expanded at a formidable rate over the past decade, unveiling the chemical richness of nitrogen. Here, the Zn-N system is investigated in laser-heated diamond anvil cells by synchrotron powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing three hitherto unobserved nitrogen compounds: β-Zn 3 N 2 , α-ZnN 4 , and β-ZnN 4 , formed at 35.0, 63.5, and 81.7 GPa, respectively. Whereas β-Zn 3 N 2 contains the N 3- nitride, both ZnN 4 solids are found to be composed of polyacetylene-like [ N 4 ] ∞ 2- chains. Upon the decompression of β-ZnN 4 below 72.7 GPa, a first-order displacive phase transition is observed from β-ZnN 4 to α-ZnN 4 . The α-ZnN 4 phase is detected down to 11.0 GPa, at lower pressures decomposing into the known α-Zn 3 N 2 (space group Ia 3̅) and N 2 . The equations of states of β-ZnN 4 and α-ZnN 4 are also determined, and their bulk moduli are found to be K 0 = 126(9) GPa and K 0 = 76(12) GPa, respectively. Density functional theory calculations were also performed and provide further insight into the Zn-N system. Moreover, comparing the Mg-N and Zn-N systems underlines the importance of minute chemical differences between metal cations in the resulting synthesized phases.

X-ray diffraction indicates that the structure of the recently discovered carbonaceous sulfur hydride (C-S-H) room-temperature superconductor is derived from previously established van der Waals compounds found in the H 2 S-H 2 and CH 4 -H 2 systems. Crystals of the superconducting phase were produced by a photochemical synthesis technique, leading to the superconducting critical temperature T c of 288 K at 267 GPa. X-ray diffraction patterns measured from 124 to 178 GPa, within the pressure range of the superconducting phase, are consistent with an orthorhombic structure derived from the Al 2 Cu-type determined for (H 2 S) 2 H 2 and (CH 4 ) 2 H 2 that differs from those predicted and observed for the S-H system at these pressures. The formation and stability of the C-S-H compound can be understood in terms of the close similarity in effective volumes of the H 2 S and CH 4 components, and denser carbon-bearing S-H phases may form at higher pressures. The results are crucial for understanding the very high superconducting T c found in the C-S-H system at megabar pressures.

Superconductivity and Anderson localization represent two extreme cases of electronic behavior in solids. Surprisingly, these two competing scenarios can occur in the same quantum system, e.g., in an amorphous superconductor. Although the disorder-driven quantum phase transition has attracted much attention, its structural origins remain elusive. Here, we discovered an unambiguous correlation between superconductivity and density in amorphous Sb&#95;{2}Se&#95;{3} at high pressure. Superconductivity first emerges in the high-density amorphous (HDA) phase at about 24 GPa, where the density of glass unexpectedly exceeds its crystalline counterpart, and then shows an enhanced critical temperature when pressure induces crystallization at 51 GPa. Ab initio simulations reveal that the bcc-like local geometry motifs form in the HDA phase, arising from distinct "metavalent bonds." Our results demonstrate that HDA phase is critical for the incipient superconductive behavior.
