Abstract

This paper addresses the problem of estimation of hydrogen gas concentration using current output from a sensor chip, integrated with a thin film of ZnO as a sensing layer and inbuilt microheater to obtain desired operating temperature by proposing an appropriate algorithm. The proposed algorithm minimizes the estimation delay while maximizing the estimation accuracy. The proposed algorithm also accounts for the variation in sensor performance with relative humidity. The key features of the proposed algorithm are low computational complexity, low memory requirements, compatibility with any metal-oxides-based hydrogen sensors with independent calibration or turning points, and minimal requirements to the calibration time. As proof of concept, a demonstration of the algorithm efficiency is evaluated by estimating hydrogen concentration using ZnO thin film-based gas sensor device and comparing its performance with available state-of-the-art hydrogen sensor algorithm outputs., Author(s): Jitthu Joseph [sup.1] , G. Abstract

We describe the spin-Hall effect of light (as well as the angular Goos-H\"{a}nchen effect) at a tilted linear-dichroic plate, such as a usual linear polarizer. Although the spin-Hall effect at a tilted polarizer was previous associated with the geometric spin-Hall effect of light (which was contrasted to the regular spin-Hall effect) [J. Korger et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 113902 (2014)], we show that the effect is actually an example of the regular spin-Hall effect that occurs at tilted anisotropic plates [K. Y. Bliokh et al., Optica 3, 1039 (2016)]. Moreover, our approach reveals the angular spin-Hall shift, which is absent in the "geometric" approach. 9. Spin-Hall effect and circular birefringence of a uniaxial crystal plate

Abstract

The linear birefringence of uniaxial crystal plates is known since the 17th century, and it is widely used in numerous optical setups and devices. Here we demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, a fine lateral circular birefringence of such crystal plates. This effect is a novel example of the spin-Hall effect of light, i.e., a transverse spin-dependent shift of the paraxial light beam transmitted through the plate. The well-known linear birefringence and the new circular birefringence form an interesting analogy with the Goos-H\"anchen and Imbert-Fedorov beam shifts that appear in the light reflection at a dielectric interface. We report the experimental observation of the effect in a remarkably simple system of a tilted half-wave plate and polarizers using polarimetric and quantum-weak-measurement techniques for the beam-shift measurements. Abstract

BackgroundPrior studies indicated a decrease in the incidences of aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. We evaluated differences in the incidence, severity of aSAH presentation, and ruptured aneurysm treatment modality during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the preceding year.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study including 49 countries and 187 centres. We recorded volumes for COVID-19 hospitalisations, aSAH hospitalisations, Hunt-Hess grade, coiling, clipping and aSAH in-hospital mortality. Diagnoses were identified by International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes or stroke databases from January 2019 to May 2021.ResultsOver the study period, there were 16 247 aSAH admissions, 344 491 COVID-19 admissions, 8300 ruptured aneurysm coiling and 4240 ruptured aneurysm clipping procedures. Declines were observed in aSAH admissions (−6.4% (95% CI −7.0% to −5.8%), p=0.0001) during the first year of the pandemic compared with the prior year, most pronounced in high-volume SAH and high-volume COVID-19 hospitals. There was a trend towards a decline in mild and moderate presentations of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) (mild: −5% (95% CI −5.9% to –4.3%), p=0.06; moderate: −8.3% (95% CI −10.2% to –6.7%), p=0.06) but no difference in higher SAH severity. The ruptured aneurysm clipping rate remained unchanged (30.7% vs 31.2%, p=0.58), whereas ruptured aneurysm coiling increased (53.97% vs 56.5%, p=0.009). There was no difference in aSAH in-hospital mortality rate (19.1% vs 20.1%, p=0.12).ConclusionDuring the first year of the pandemic, there was a decrease in aSAH admissions volume, driven by a decrease in mild to moderate presentation of aSAH. There was an increase in the ruptured aneurysm coiling rate but neither change in the ruptured aneurysm clipping rate nor change in aSAH in-hospital mortality.Trial registration numberNCT04934020.

Abstract

A novel ZnO dry etching approach is introduced using reactive ion beam etching of thick sol-gel ZnO layers for controlled nanodisk/nanocone array fabrication. In this approach the same system can be used for the colloidal lithography mask (silica particles) size reduction by a fluorine-based chemistry and etching of the ZnO nanostructures by a CH4/H2/Ar chemistry. This resulted in a ZnO:SiO2 etch selectivity of ~3.4 and etch rate of ~56 nm/min. Thick sol-gel ZnO layers, nanodisk arrays and (truncated) nanocone arrays were fabricated and their optical properties analyzed by finite-difference time-domain simulations and spectrally-resolved total/specular reflectivity measurements. The demonstrated broadband omnidirectional anti-reflection, controlled nanostructure period/geometry and low absorption in the visible-NIR spectrum makes these sol-gel ZnO nanostructures very interesting for many optoelectronic applications, including photovoltaics., QC 20171128

32. Honeycomb type ZnO nanostructures for sensitive and selective CO detection

Abstract

Excellent sensing performance for CO gas is demonstrated using inexpensive sensor devices based on honeycomb type ZnO nanostructures, fabricated by colloidal lithography and lift-off process. This newly proposed method for gas sensors is cost effective and provides significant enhancement of both sensitivity and selectivity of CO detection. Honeycomb type ZnO nano films developed in ∼21 nm ZnO layer consisting of 1 μm period hexagonal lattice of air-holes with diameter varying from ∼600–900 nm are investigated for CO sensing. These structures are fabricated by a combination of self-assembly of polystyrene (PS) spheres, their size reduction by oxygen plasma and magnetron-sputtering of ZnO followed by PS mask removal. The hole diameter and hence the width of ZnO honeycomb walls are determined by size reduction of PS spheres. Fabricated ZnO honeycomb type sensors show superior sensing performance compared to planar ZnO films, and response as high as ∼81.2% at 300 °C for a 3 ppm CO with a detection resolution of 500 ppb and response and recovery times of ∼180 and ∼210 s, respectively, were obtained. The repeatability of the observed results is confirmed and in addition, the CO selectivity is shown for gas mixtures consisting of CH4, H2S, CO2, NO2, SO2 and H2. Abstract

Grassroots innovations and traditional knowledge are precious resource which provides solutions for various kinds of problems and local needs. A review of SRISTI database suggest that large number of grassroots practices are being used by the farmers in the field conditions to control the termite (Odontotermes obesus Rambur) attack. In this study, five plant species being used by grassroots innovators in different forms of preparation for termite control in field conditions were selected for efficacy evaluation. Herbal formulations were developed from the aqueous extracts of twig of Aristolochia bracteata Retz. (Aristolochiaceae), twig of Solanum surattense Burm.f. (Solanaceae), leaves of Calotropis procera Ait. f. (Asclepiadaceae), milky latex of Euphorbia tirucalli L. (Euphorbiaceae) and oil of Ricinus communis L. (Euphorbiaceae). Primary screening of the individual extracts, oil and milky latex at 10% concentration shows that C. procera, A. bracteata, R. communis (oil) and E. tirucalli (latex) are having significant effects and caused 100% mortality. However, S. surattense caused 88.89% mortality. Compared to the individual treatments, mixture of extracts of C. procera, A. bracteata, S. surattense, oil of R. communis and milky latex of E. tirucalli showed better results in terms of mortality and hence should be preferred for termite control. The results obtained from the experiments are encouraging and proves efficacy of the plants in control of termite. Abstract

Decaprenylphosphoryl-β-d-ribose-2'-epimerase (DprE1) is a druggable target which is being exploited for the development of new anti-TB agents. In the present work, we report developing a pharmacophore model and performing virtual screening of Asinex database using the developed pharmacophore model to get eight hits as potential DprE1 inhibitors. The hits were used as leads to design new 3-phenylpyrazolo[1,5- a ]pyrimidine-2,7(1 H ,4 H )-dione based potential anti-TB agents. On the basis of the identified lead molecules, a total of 18 compounds were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-TB activity by using MABA. ADMET predictions for all the compounds revealed that these compounds have drug-like and lead-like properties. One of the final compounds was found to exhibit potent anti-TB activity against Mycobacterium bovis .Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.
