International audience; Rice is the staple food in Madagascar. The rind of this rice is, therefore, a waste present in large quantities on the island. Some of these bark is used by brickmakers to bake clay bricks. A minimal amount of the ash produced by these burned bark is used to produce soap. The rest is released into the environment as agricultural waste. Our work aims to find another way of recycling this ash, which is mainly located on the large island. The studies carried out in this article have been directed towards mixing these ashes with cement dedicated to the construction of buildings. The idea is not new but provides a local solution to a specific problem in the country. The advantage of such an approach is twofold : it reduces the cost of construction but also enables the recovery of the agricultural waste produced in Malagasy state.

The research work presented in this HDR focused on understanding the mechanisms related to the ecological transition of territories. The systemic reading at the scale of territories questions the transdisciplinary approaches necessary for the analysis and modeling of the dynamics of change. The objective of my work has been to develop within the laboratory another scale of analysis allowing a holistic approach to the energy and environmental transition at the scale of territories. A first part presents my teaching and research activities which naturally led me to develop my research around the theme of energy. The second part presents the various research carried out for ten years within the PIMENT laboratory. We first approach the question of the transition through the prism of the diagnosis and the potentialities of territories in order to understand the dynamics in progress and to evaluate their capacities to engage in this transition. This understanding of territories using data analysis tools that allow us to formulate modeling hypotheses for a prospective approach of the transition. This step allowed us to dene plausible scenarios for different islands in the Indian Ocean and to evaluate the planning tools that would be necessary to implement in order to achieve this change. Finally, in a last theme we address the question of the sustainability of development projects, but more generally of built spaces. This comprehensive approach to sustainability is based on a cross-analysis combining regulatory tools, user perceptions and environmental assessment tools. We are thus interested in all phases of the life of built-up spaces, from the project to the end of life : questioning the identity of the way of living, the environmental quality of the buildings, the impact of anthropic activity and the notion of sustainability of the buildings.; Les travaux de recherche présentés dans le cadre cette HDR ont porté sur la compréhension des mécanismes liés à la transition écologique des territoires. International audience; The vulnerability of island spaces has been recognized since the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992. Global energy pressure and the depletion of resources exacerbate their vulnerability. These territories are supposed to be real laboratories to experiment energy planning strategies, then allowed to help the international community. Nevertheless, the great diversity of island situations makes their case particular and difficult to treat. Some island territories are autonomous, the Small Island Developing States, while others depend on developed metropolitan states. Is there a difference between these two types of territories to succeed energy transition? We adopt electricity generation as a metric for sustainable transition quality. This paper contributes to the understanding of ongoing dynamic through a multidimensional analysis of data allowing to classify these territories: SIDS and outermost regions of the European Union. The combination of Principal Component Analysis and Hierarchical Classification will provide island profiles that will highlight differences between outermost regions and SIDS. Are the outermost regions of the European Union more advanced in the energy transition? In addition to the classification, a ranking will be proposed through the implementation of an energy vulnerability indicator. The classification and ranking will make it possible to draw typical portraits. These will identify the elements of resilience and the elements of vulnerabilities. This analysis, therefore, highlights the strengths and weaknesses will help to guide the energy policies of these territories. The comparison of these two types of territories has not been made so far. This work would highlight the situation of SIDS face island developed territories: outermost regions of the European Union.

International audience; The construction sector is very energy- and carbon-intensive. Evaluating environmental impacts is relatively complex, but the consideration of these factors is crucial for a key mitigation strategy. The main purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of a single-family house under different geographical situations. To do so, a comparative study is proposed between France (continental location) and Reunion (insular context).An Life Cycle Assessment approach has been used to define the impact at different steps of house construction. The specific emission was defined to take into account the mix of electricity generation, the import of materials, and the local manufacturing process. A comparative study was conducted between the French environmental Database INIES and factors created under GEMIS. This comparison provided some elements of validation of the defined processes for France. Thus, the adaptation of specific emission factors was possible for the Reunion case based on the same processes.Among the first results obtained (civil works), an overview of the Global Warming Potential (GWP), which is defined per m2 of residential house, was determined. The results for France and Reunion were 192.35 and 228.65 kg CO2 eq/m2, respectively. The difference of 18.87% highlights the effect of insularity due to the impact of building material import and mix of electricity. Thus, the greater impact of the construction sector in an island environment than in a continental environment is understandable because of products manufactured locally using a local mix of electricity. The energy vulnerability of an island area can have indirect consequences on the environmental quality of the territory. This case study can be considered useful when defining a sustainable planning strategy that aims to reduce environmental effects. Finally, this article aspires to fill the gap in the field of LCA for the building sector in a subtropical climate.

International audience; Les programmes de renouvellement urbain s’intéressent à l’amélioration structurelle et socioéconomique des quartiers. Cependant, en raison de la complexité de l’intervention, il est parfois difficile d’évaluer l’impact de ces interventions. Cet article s’attache à aborder la question de la rénovation de Ravine Blanche du point de vue de la population afin de dégager les contours d’une réussite du projet au travers de la notion d’acceptation. Ainsi deux thèmes sont présentés dans ce travail : la mobilité et les déchets. Notre étude vise à définir une situation initiale post opération de l’avis des habitants. Les résultats ont porté sur deux approches : une première analyse exploratoire des données qui a permis de mettre en évidence trois classes de tendances. Et dans une seconde étape une analyse de la perception qui nous a mis en lumière sur les déterminants et les freins des habitants face à ces nouveaux usages. Cet étude met en évidence l’effet de la perception des habitants sur les comportements vis-à-vis du tri et des déplacements. Ainsi, ce processus d’appropriation temporelle de ces nouveaux usages doit se construire de façon pluriannuelle après l’opération.

International audience; Considering environmental impact as constraint in energy planning and sustainable policy has gained in importance over the past two decades. Electricity is currently a key contributor to greenhouse gases emissions. These impacts are particularly significant in the case of remote islands due to the share of fossil fuel in electricity mix. This paper aims to first provide a clearer understanding of the electricity situation Madagascar and Reunion Island. Then a detailed evaluation of their environmental impacts through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. The GWP of the electricity mix is respectively estimated for Madagascar and Reunion Island at 464 and 673 g CO2-eq/kWh. Scenario based on renewable energy sources development on these islands has been investigated to define a road map to 2050, for a greener and cleaner electricity generation. The analysis is conducted to help policymakers in defining a framework for gradually change the fossil fuel power plants from now to renewables in 2050

International audience; This study presents a linear programming model for an optimal long-term electricity mix planning of an insular territory. A prospective exercise on electricity generation is conducted over a period of 15-35 years. A general methodology is presented to determine an optimal generation mix that minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emission by taking into account the environmental challenges of the territory. This methodology is applied to the case of Reunion Island. The main constraints considered here are the evolution of electricity emission factor and to meet the future electricity demand. Due to the long time-frame that we consider, a normative electricity mix scenario is presented, which aimed to reach the target by adjustments of the current electricity power system. The obtained results refer two scenarios: preserving and transforming structure. Referring to results, it is feasible to achieve environmental policy established by the energy transition act.

International audience; Les crises économiques, environnementales et énergétiques successives au cours du XXème siècle ont accentué les inégalités entre les pays du monde. Les pays les moins développés se retrouvent démunis face à la course à l’énergie et face aux nouveaux enjeux de développement imposés par le réchauffement climatique. Cette communication s’intéresse au cas particulier des Petits Etats Insulaires en Développement (PEID), territoires isolés aux économies fragiles (BOUCHARD, et al. 2010). Ces territoires ont progressivement été reconnus comme étant particulièrement vulnérables et font l’objet d’une attention particulière de la part de la communauté internationale depuis les années 1970 (Angeon et Hoarau, 2015). Ces territoires spécifiques ont peu a peu été intégrés dans les questionnements d’ordre et mondial : à Rio en 1992, le programme Action 21 alertait sur leur situation singulière en mentionnant « un cas particulier pour l’environnement et le développement » (ONU, Action 21 17G. Développement durable des petits pays insulaires 1992). Deux ans plus tard à la Barbade, on réitérait l’importance des PEID en définissant un certain nombre de priorités et d’actions à effectuer au service des PEID (ONU, 1994). Forts de ces considérations, ils disposent aujourd’hui de leurs propres sommets : à Samoa, en 2014, ont pu être discutés l’avancement du programme d’action adopté dix ans plus tôt à la Barbade. L’objectif de cette communication est d’étudier la vulnérabilité de ces petites économies insulaires. La vulnérabilité économique environnementale de ces territoires a été étudiée par de nombreux travaux (Angeon et Saffache, 2008 ; Briguglio 1995 ; Poirine, 1995, Lucas et al., 2017). L’angle d’attaque est ici la vulnérabilité énergétique d’un territoire : dans un monde où l’énergie conditionne la société, les différents chocs pétroliers ont permis depuis longtemps de démontrer la dépendance aux énergies, il s’agit d’apporter une définition claire à la notion de vulnérabilité énergétique appliquée à un territoire. Les îles notamment sont particulièrement fragilisées par la dimension énergétique de nos économies mondiales et il convient de leur accorder une attention particulière (Guerassimoff et Naizi, 2008 ; Romano et al., 2016) (ROMANO, et al. 2016). Cette nouvelle acception de la vulnérabilité énergétique sera développée à travers une analyse chiffrée pour la production d’un Indicateur de Vulnérabilité ENergétique (IVEN), un indicateur composite, qui, à la manière de l’IDH (Indice de Développement Humain) pourrait apporter une évaluation sur le niveau de développement d’un territoire et sur sa capacité à faire face au challenge de la transition écologique : ces territoires peuvent-ils devenir autosuffisants en énergie ? La méthode envisagée va s’appuyer sur une analyse en composante principale couplée à une classification ascendante hiérarchique permettant de considérer un jeu de données importants en variables et individus en entrée. Les résultats vont donc mettre en évidence un résumé de l’information à travers 2 à 3 dimensions qui permettront de mettre en exergue une classification des différentes îles étudiées. Il s’agit dans un premier temps d’une caractérisation de la notion de vulnérabilité énergétique à travers notre jeu de données. En s’appuyant sur cette classification, l’IVEN sera produit en considérant les dimensions les plus significatives. Le résultat final permettra enfin de classer les îles selon leur niveau de vulnérabilité énergétique. Ce nouvel indicateur créé permettra de renseigner sur le niveau d’adaptabilité des PEID pour faire face à la transition écologique.

Due to the high reliance on fossil fuels in the electricity production and transport sector, to achieve the energy transition holds a particular relevance for the non-interconnected territories. This paper aims to determine the environmental influences through electricity generation of the french overseas departments. The results from the greenhouse gases emission assessment indicated that the operation phase contribution is significant. A classification based on socioeconomic and environmental data was also carried out in order to point out the common characteristics among the territories., Réussir la transition énergétique est un challenge qui revêt une résonance particulière pour les zones non inter-connectées (ZNI), du fait de la forte dépendance aux combustibles fos-siles dans leur mix électrique et le transport. Cette étude se focalise sur les impacts générés par la production d'électricité de départements insulaires français. L'évaluation des émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES) a montré que la phase de production est prépondérante. Une classification a également été effectuée à partir des données socio-économiques et énergétiques afin de mettre en exergue les caractéristiques communes entre les différents territoires étudiés.

International audience; La gazéification de la biomasse est un procédé de conversion très prometteur pour la production de gaz de synthèse ou syngas, composé essentiellement de dioxyde de carbone, de monoxyde de carbone, d’hydrogène et de méthane, et se présente comme étant une technologie alternative à l’utilisation des énergies fossiles conventionnelles. Le présent travail porte sur la modélisation de la conversion thermochimique de la biomasse par gazéification et du comportement des mécanismes réactionnels dans un réacteur à lit fluidisé à deux phases, solide et gazeuse. Pour ce faire, un modèle mathématique basé sur une approche hydrodynamique de type Euler-Lagrange est développé. Les équations de conservation de masse, de quantité de mouvement, de l’énergie et de transport des espèces ainsi que les réactions chimiques décrivant le processus de gazéification y sont notamment incluses. Le modèle est résolu numériquement par la méthode des volumes finis conservative sur la plateforme OpenFOAM. Une analyse du profil de température, de l’évolution des flux de gaz et de la température dans le réacteur de gazéification est notamment effectuée et discutée.

International audience; During the last twenty years, the comfort and cooling requirements of office buildings and occupants have evolved significantly in Reunion Island, particularly during the summer period. This intensive use of air conditioning has resulted in a significant increase in electricity consumption such as traditional cooling technologies (mechanical vapor compression systems). In this context, solar cooling systems are one of the more interesting alternatives to conventional air conditioning systems. Thus in 2008, the PIMENT laboratory in Reunion Island proposed to set up an experimental platform called "RAFSOL", on the University Institute of Technology of Saint-Pierre, to study the absorption solar cooling technology for a University building. Experimental and numerical investigations of RAFSOL allowed to identify several research topics to improve global performances of the installation. One of them concerns the incorporation of a new thermal storage into the solar cooling system. Indeed, the addition of thermal storage (hot and/or cold) give the following advantages: (i) sufficient cooling power to cover the entire building’s needs, (ii) intelligent use the weekend energy potential, (iii) prevents overheating of the solar loop because of lower cooling needs. This thermal storage would also improve the system performance since it brings the temperatures of the hot and cold sources closer to their nominal values and thus optimizes the running time of the absorption chiller. In this work we decided to study only the incorporation of a hot thermal storage composed of a phase change material, and to investigate the influence of this storage on the solar cooling system performances. Three different phase change temperatures are investigated according to the state of art of this echnology: 79, 84 and 90°C. Simulation results are then analyzed and discussed to identify the optimal configuration of the thermal storage. In this first approach, the results show that the most interesting melting temperature, to improve most of performance indicators is 79°C.
