The resonant conversion, within the inter-galactic medium, of regular photons into dark photons amplifies the anisotropy observed in the CMB, thereby imposing stringent constraints on the existence of light dark photons. In this study, we investigate the impact of light dark photons, with masses in the range $3\times 10^{-15} ~\rm{eV} < m_{A'} < 3\times 10^{-12}~\rm{eV}$ on the power spectrum of temperature anisotropies within the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation utilizing the state-of-the-art large-volume FLAMINGO cosmological simulations. Strongly interacting massive particles $\pi$ have been advocated as prominent dark matter candidates when they regulate their relic abundance through odd-numbered $3 \pi \to2\pi$ annihilation. We show that successful freeze-out may also be achieved through even-numbered interactions $X X \to \pi \pi $ once bound states $X$ among the particles of the low-energy spectrum exist. In addition, $X$-formation hosts the potential of also catalyzing odd-numbered $3 \pi \to2\pi$ annihilation processes, turning them into effective two-body processes $\pi X \to \pi\pi$. Bound states are often a natural consequence of strongly interacting theories. We calculate the dark matter freeze-out and comment on the cosmic viability and possible extensions. Thermal freeze-out offers an attractive explanation of the dark matter density free from fine-tuning of initial conditions. For dark matter with a mass below tens of MeV, photons, electrons, and neutrinos are the only available direct Standard Model annihilation products. Using a full three-sector abundance calculation, we determine the minimal mass of dark matter, allowing for an arbitrary branching into electrons/photons and neutrinos that is compatible with current cosmological observations. The analysis takes into account the heat transfer between the various sectors from annihilation and elastic scattering, representing the first fully self-consistent analysis that tracks the respective sectors' temperatures. We thereby provide accurate thermal annihilation cross sections, particularly for velocity-dependent cases, and deduce the sensitivity of current and upcoming CMB experiments to MeV thermal dark matter. In the latter context, we also establish the fine-tuned parameter region where a tiny admixture of neutrinos in the final states rules in MeV-scale $p$-wave annihilating DM into electrons. Finally, we show that a sub-% millicharged dark matter with an interaction strength that interferes with 21 cm cosmology is still allowed when freeze-out is supplemented with annihilation into neutrinos. A direct discovery of the cosmic neutrino background would bring to a closure the searches for relic left-over radiation predicted by the Hot Big Bang cosmology. Recently, the KATRIN experiment put a limit on the local relic neutrino overdensity with respect to the cosmological predicted average value at $\eta \lesssim 10^{11}$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 011806 (2022)]. In this work, we first examine to what extent such values of $\eta$ are conceivable. We show that even under cavalier assumptions, a cosmic origin of $\eta \gtrsim 10^4$ seems out of reach (with the caveat of forming bound objects under a new force,) but find that a hypothetical local source of low-energy neutrinos could achieve $\eta \sim 10^{11}$. Second, when such values are considered, we point out that the experimental signature in KATRIN and other neutrino-capture experiments changes, contrary to what has hitherto been assumed. Our results are model-independent and maximally accommodating as they only assume the Pauli exclusion principle. As intermittent physics target in the quest for C$\nu$B detection, we identify an experimental sensitivity to $\eta \sim 10^4$ for which conceivable sources exist; to resolve the effect of a degenerate Fermi gas for such overdensity an energy resolution of 10 meV is required., Comment: Journal version

We consider electrically neutral complex vector particles $V$ below the GeV mass scale that, from a low energy perspective, couple to the photon via higher dimensional form factor interactions. We derive ensuing astrophysical constraints by considering the anomalous energy loss from the Sun, Horizontal Branch, and Red Giant stars as well as from SN1987A that arise from vector pair-production in these environments. Under the assumption that the dark states $V$ constitute dark matter, the bounds are then complemented by direct and indirect detection as well as cosmological limits. The relic density from freeze-out and freeze-in mechanisms is also computed. The stable hadronic bound states in a hidden new non-Abelian gauge sector provide interesting candidates for strongly-interacting Dark Matter (DM). A particular example are theories in which DM is made up of dark pions which set the DM relic abundance through self-annihilation. One of the simplest realizations is $Sp(4)_c$ gauge theory with two Dirac fermions. While most searches for cosmic axions so far focused on their cold relics as (a component of) dark matter, various well-motivated cosmological sources can produce "boosted" axions that remain relativistic today. We demonstrate that existing/upcoming neutrino experiments such as Super-Kamiokande, Hyper-Kamiokande, DUNE, JUNO, and IceCube can probe such energetic axion relics. The characteristic signature is the mono-energetic single photon signal from axion absorption induced by the axion-photon coupling. Recently it has been suggested that thermal bremsstrahlung emission, when it decouples prior to recombination, creates an excess over the Planck cosmic microwave background spectrum at sub-GHz frequencies. Remarkable by itself, this would also explain a long-standing unexplained deficit in the predictions of the extragalactic radio background. Thermal dark matter at the MeV mass-scale has its abundance set during the highly non-trivial epochs of neutrino decoupling and electron annihilation. The technical obstacles attached to solving Boltzmann equations of multiple interacting sectors being both relativistic and non-relativistic have to-date prevented the full treatment of this problem. Here, for the first time, we calculate the freeze-out of light dark matter, taking into account the energy transfer between the dark sector, neutrinos, and the electromagnetically interacting plasma from annihilation and elastic scattering processes alike. We develop a numerically feasible treatment that allows to track photon and neutrino temperatures across freeze-out and to arrive at a precision prediction of $N_{\rm eff}$ for arbitrary branching ratios of the dark matter annihilation channels. In addition, our treatment resolves for the first time the dark matter temperature evolution across freeze-out involving three sectors. It enters in the efficiency of velocity-dependent annihilation channels and for a flavor-blind $p$-wave annihilation into electron- and neutrino-pairs of all generations, we find the present Planck data excludes a complex scalar dark matter particle of mass of $m_\phi \leq 7$ MeV., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, to match the published version

Axion-photon conversion is a prime mechanism to detect axion-like particles that share a coupling to the photon. We point out that in the vicinity of neutron stars with strong magnetic fields, magnetars, the effective photon mass receives comparable but opposite contributions from free electrons and the radiation field. This leads to an energy-dependent resonance condition for conversion that can be met for arbitrary light axions and leveraged when using systems with detected radio component. Using the magnetar SGR J1745-2900 as an exemplary source, we demonstrate that sensitivity to $|g_{a\gamma}| \sim 10^{-12}\,\rm{GeV^{-1}}$ or better can be gained for $m_a \lesssim 10^{-6}\,\rm eV$, with the potential to improve current constraints on the axion-photon coupling by more than one order of magnitude over a broad mass range. Theoretical investigations into the evolution of the early universe are an essential part of particle physics that allow us to identify viable extensions to the Standard Model as well as motivated parameter space that can be probed by various experiments and observations. In this white paper, we review particle physics models of the early universe. First, we outline various models that explain two essential ingredients of the early universe (dark matter and baryon asymmetry) and those that seek to address current observational anomalies. We then discuss dynamics of the early universe in models of neutrino masses, axions, and several solutions to the electroweak hierarchy problem. Strongly interacting massive particles are viable dark matter candidates. We consider a dark $Sp(4)$ gauge theory with $N_f=2$ fermions in the pseudo-real fundamental representation and construct the chiral low-energy effective theory. We determine the flavor multiplet structure and the chiral Lagrangian, including the Wess-Zumino-Witten term for mass-degenerate and non-degenerate flavors. We then study the possible charge assignments under a $U(1)'$ gauge symmetry, emphasizing on dark state stability, and provide the full Lagrangian description for Goldstone bosons and vector resonances, including the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. Finally, we use dedicated lattice simulations to determine the chiral low-energy effective theory's validity and low-energy constants. We propose a new mechanism where a multi-component dark sector generates the observed dark matter abundance and baryon asymmetry and thus addresses the coincidence between the two. The thermal freeze-out of dark matter annihilating into meta-stable dark partners sets the dark matter relic abundance while providing the out-of-equilibrium condition for baryogenesis. The meta-stable state triggers baryon asymmetry production by its decay well after the freeze-out and potentially induces a period of early matter domination before its decay. The dark matter and baryon abundances are related through number conservation within the dark sector (cogenesis). The "coincidence" is a natural outcome with GeV- to TeV-scale symmetric dark matter and the dark sector's interactions with the Standard Model quarks. We present a UV-complete model and explore its phenomenological predictions, including dark matter direct detection signals, LHC signatures of new massive particles with color charges and long-lived particles with displaced vertices, dark matter-induced nucleon conversions, (exotic) dark matter indirect detection signals, and effects on the cosmological matter power spectrum. The scattering of light dark matter off thermal electrons inside the Sun produces a "fast" sub-component of the dark matter flux that may be detectable in underground experiments. We update and extend previous work by analyzing the signatures of dark matter candidates which scatter via light mediators. Using numerical simulations of the dark matter-electron interaction in the solar interior, we determine the energy spectrum of the reflected flux, and calculate the expected rates for direct detection experiments. We find that large Xenon-based experiments (such as XENON1T) provide the strongest direct limits for dark matter masses below a few MeV, reaching a sensitivity to the effective dark matter charge of better than $\sim 10^{-9}e$., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures; direct detection limits corrected, limits become stronger; conclusions unchanged

The evaluation of the electron-ion bremsstrahlung cross section exact to all orders in the Coulomb potential is computationally expensive due to the appearance of hypergeometric functions. Therefore tabulations are widely used. Here, we provide an approximate formula for the non-relativistic dipole process valid for all applicable relative velocities and photon energies. Its validity spans from the Born- to the classical regime and from soft-photon emission to the kinematic endpoint. The error remains below 3% (and widely below 1%) except at an isolated region of hard-photon emission at the quantum-to-classical crossover. The exact result for non-relativistic quadrupole bremsstrahlung in a Coulomb field was established only recently in Pradler & Semmelrock (2020). It requires the evaluation and integration of hypergeometric functions across a wide range of parameters and arguments, which, in practice, is unfeasible. Here we provide a highly accurate tabulation of the Gaunt factor for quadrupole radiation, its thermal average in a Maxwellian plasma, and the associated cooling function over the entire kinematically relevant range. In addition, we provide a simple approximate formula for the emission cross section which works to within a few percent accuracy for all practical purposes. We study the possibility that dark radiation, sourced through the decay of dark matter in the late Universe, carries electromagnetic interactions. The relativistic flux of particles induces recoil signals in direct detection and neutrino experiments through its interaction with millicharge, electric/magnetic dipole moments, or anapole moment/charge radius. Taking the DM lifetime as 35 times the age of the Universe, as currently cosmologically allowed, we show that direct detection (neutrino) experiments have complementary sensitivity down to $\epsilon\sim 10^{-11}$ $(10^{-12})$, $d_\chi/\mu_\chi \sim 10^{-9}\,\mu_B$ $(10^{-13}\mu_B)$, and $a_\chi/b_\chi \sim 10^{-2}\,{\rm GeV}^{-2}$ $(10^{-8}\,{\rm GeV}^{-2})$ on the respective couplings. When the Dark Matter mass is below the eV-scale, its cosmological occupation number exceeds the ones of photons from the cosmic microwave background as well as of relic neutrinos. If such Dark Matter decays to pairs of neutrinos, it implies that experiments that seek the detection of the cosmic neutrino background may as well be sensitive to this additional form of "dark radiation". Here we study the prospects for detection taking into account various options for the forecasted performance of the future PTOLEMY experiment. From a detailed profile likelihood analysis we find that Dark Matter decays with lifetime as large as $10^4$ Gyr or a sub-% Dark Matter fraction decaying today can be discovered. The prospects are facilitated by the distinct spectral event shape that is introduced from galactic and cosmological neutrino dark radiation fluxes. In the process we also clarify the importance of Pauli-blocking in the Dark Matter decay. The scenarios presented in this work can be considered early physics targets in the development of these instruments with relaxed demands on performance and energy resolution.

We revisit the possibility of light scalar dark matter, in the MeV to GeV mass bracket and coupled to electrons through fermion or vector mediators, in light of significant experimental and observational advances that probe new physics below the GeV-scale. We establish new limits from electron colliders and fixed-target beams, and derive the strength of loop-induced processes that are probed by precision physics, among other laboratory probes. In addition, we compute the cooling bound from SN1987A, consider self-scattering, structure formation, and cosmological constraints as well as the limits from dark matter-electron scattering in direct detection experiments. We then show that the combination of constraints largely excludes the possibility that the galactic annihilation of these particles may explain the long-standing INTEGRAL excess of 511 keV photons as observed in the galactic bulge. In this work we analyse the ultimate sensitivity of dark matter direct detection experiments, the "neutrino-floor", in the presence of anomalous sources of dark radiation in form of SM or semi-sterile neutrinos. This flux-component is assumed to be produced from dark matter decay. Since dark radiation may mimic dark matter signals, we perform our analysis based on likelihood statistics that allows to test the distinguishability between signals and backgrounds. We show that the neutrino floor for xenon-based experiments may be lifted in the presence of extra dark radiation. In addition, we explore the testability of neutrino dark radiation from dark matter decay in direct detection experiments. Given the previous bounds from neutrino experiments, we find that xenon-based dark matter searches will not be able to probe new regions of the dark matter progenitor mass and lifetime parameter space when the decay products are SM neutrinos. In turn, if the decay instead happens to a fourth neutrino species with enhanced interactions to baryons, DR can either constitute the dominant background or a discoverable signal in direct detection experiments., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

The quantum mechanical treatment of quadrupole radiation due to bremsstrahlung exact to all orders in the Coulomb interaction of two non-relativistically colliding charged spin-0 and unpolarized spin-1/2 particles is presented. We calculate the elements of the quadrupole tensor, and present analytical solutions for the double differential photon emission cross section of identical and non-identical particles. Contact is made to Born-level and quasi-classical results in the respective kinematic limits and effective energy loss rates are obtained. A generally valid formula for soft-photon emission is established and an approximate formula across the entire kinematic regime is constructed. The results apply to bremsstrahlung emission in the scattering of pairs of electrons and are hence relevant in the study of astrophysical phenomena. We provide updates to the limits on solar emission of dark photons, or more generally any light vector particle coupled to the electron vector current. The recent 2019 and 2020 electronic recoil data from XENON1T now provides more stringent constraints on these models than stellar energy loss in the sub-keV mass region. We also show that solar emission of dark photons does not provide a good fit to the recent XENON1T excess in the 2-5 keV energy bins. In contrast, the absorption of 2-4 keV mass dark photons that saturate the local dark matter mass density does provide a good fit to the excess, for mixing angles in the range $\epsilon \in (4-12)\times 10^{-16}$, while satisfying astrophysical constraints. Photons traveling cosmological distances through the inhomogeneous Universe experience a great variation in their in-medium induced effective mass. Using the EAGLE suite of hydrodynamical simulations, we infer the free electron distribution and thereby the effective photon mass after reionization. We use this data to study the inter-conversion of kinetically mixed photons and dark photons, which may occur at a great number of resonance redshifts, and obtain the "optical depth" against conversion along random lines-of-sight. Using COBE/FIRAS, Planck, and SPT measurements, we constrain the dark photon parameter space from the depletion of CMB photons into dark photons that causes both spectral distortions and additional anisotropies in the CMB. Finally, we also consider the conversion of sub-eV dark radiation into ordinary photons. In the inhomogeneous Universe, the cosmological conversion of dark photons into ordinary photons (and vice versa) may happen at a great number of resonance redshifts. This alters the CMB observed energy spectrum and degree of small-scale anisotropies. We utilize results from the EAGLE simulation to obtain the conversion probability along random line-of-sights to quantify these effects. We then apply our results to the case where dark photons are sourced by dark matter decay and their high-redshift conversion into ordinary photons modify the global 21 cm signal expected from the cosmic dawn era. Concretely, we show that a significant portion of the parameter space for which a converted population of photons in the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the CMB explains the absorption strength observed by EDGES, is ruled out from the brightness temperature measurements of COBE/FIRAS and the CMB anisotropy measurements of Planck and SPT., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures; numerical bug in Fig. 6 fixed; conclusions unchanged; references added

We consider electromagnetically neutral dark states that couple to the photon through higher dimensional effective operators, such as electric and magnetic dipole moment, anapole moment and charge radius operators. We investigate the possibility of probing the existence of such dark states, taking a Dirac fermion $\chi$ as an example, at several representative proton-beam experiments. As no positive signal has been reported, we obtain upper limits (or projected sensitivities) on the corresponding electromagnetic form factors for dark states lighter than several GeV. We demonstrate that while the current limits from proton-beam experiments are at most comparable with those from high-energy electron colliders, future experiments, such as DUNE and SHiP, will be able to improve the sensitivities to electric and magnetic dipole moment interactions, owing to their high intensity., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, to match the published version

The existence of dark matter particles that carry phenomenologically relevant self-interaction cross sections mediated by light dark sector states is considered to be severely constrained through a combination of experimental and observational data. The conclusion is based on the assumption of specific dark matter production mechanisms such as thermal freeze-out together with an extrapolation of a standard cosmological history beyond the epoch of primordial nucleosynthesis. In this work, we drop these assumptions and examine the scenario from the perspective of the current firm knowledge we have: results from direct and indirect dark matter searches and cosmological and astrophysical observations, without additional assumptions on dark matter genesis or the thermal state of the very early universe. We show that even in the minimal set-up, where dark matter particles self-interact via a kinetically mixed vector mediator, a significant amount of parameter space remains allowed. A key strategy for the direct detection of sub-GeV dark matter is to search for small ionization signals. These can arise from dark matter-electron scattering or when the dark matter-nucleus scattering process is accompanied by a "Migdal" electron. We show that the theoretical descriptions of both processes are closely related, which allows for a principal mapping between dark matter-electron and dark matter-nucleus scattering rates once the dark matter interactions with matter are specified. We explore this parametric relationship for noble-liquid targets and, for the first time, provide an estimate of the "Migdal" ionization rate in semiconductors that is based on evaluating a crystal form factor that accounts for the semiconductor band structure. We also present new dark-matter-nucleus scattering limits down to dark matter masses of 500 keV using published data from XENON10, XENON100, and a SENSEI prototype Skipper-CCD. For a dark photon mediator, the dark matter-electron scattering rates dominate over the Migdal rates for dark matter masses below 100 MeV. Electromagnetically neutral dark sector particles may directly couple to the photon through higher dimensional effective operators. Considering electric and magnetic dipole moment, anapole moment, and charge radius interactions, we derive constraints from stellar energy loss in the Sun, horizontal branch and red giant stars, as well as from cooling of the proto-neutron star of SN1987A. We provide the exact formula for in-medium photon-mediated pair production to leading order in the dark coupling, and compute the energy loss rates explicitly for the most important processes, including a careful discussion on resonances and potential double counting between the processes. Stringent limits for dark states with masses below $3\,$keV ($40\,$MeV) arise from red giant stars (SN1987A), implying an effective lower mass-scale of approximately $10^9\,$GeV ($10^7\,$GeV) for mass-dimension five, and $100\,$GeV ($2.5\,$TeV) for mass-dimension six operators as long as dark states stream freely; for the proto-neutron star, the trapping of dark states is also evaluated. It is entirely possible that our Universe is filled with dark radiation, such as SM neutrinos or new physics states, that are sourced by the decay of dark matter with cosmologically long lifetime. If non-thermal neutrinos produced such way carry sufficient energy, they can leave a detectable imprint in experiments designed to search for very weakly interacting particles: dark matter and underground neutrino experiments. Conversely, a very soft non-thermal population of dark photons sourced this way is allowed to exceed the number density of CMB photons by many orders of magnitude without being in conflict with current bounds. Precision cosmology provides a sensitive probe of extremely weakly coupled states due to thermal freeze-in production, with subsequent decays impacting physics during well-tested cosmological epochs. We explore the cosmological implications of the freeze-in production of a new scalar $S$ via the super-renormalizable Higgs portal. If the mass of $S$ is at or below the electroweak scale, peak freeze-in production occurs during the electroweak epoch. We improve the calculation of the freeze-in abundance by including all relevant QCD and electroweak production channels. The resulting abundance and subsequent decay of $S$ is constrained by a combination of X-ray data, cosmic microwave background anisotropies and spectral distortions, $N_{\rm eff}$, and the consistency of BBN with observations. These probes constrain technically natural couplings for such scalars from $m_S \sim$ keV all the way to $m_S \sim 100$ GeV. New particles $\chi$ that are electrically neutral but couple to the electromagnetic current via higher-dimensional operators and that are sufficiently light, at or below the GeV-mass scale, can be produced in pairs in a number of dedicated high-intensity experiments. In this work we consider the production of $\chi$ through magnetic- and electric-dipole moments as well as through anapole moment and charge radius interactions in electron beams. We derive new constraints from BaBar, NA64 and mQ and forecast the future sensitivity on the existence of such states, from Belle-II, LDMX and BDX. We present for the first time a detailed treatment of the off-shell production of photons in electron beams with subsequent decay into a $\chi\bar\chi$ pair in a 2-to-4 process. These direct limits are then compared to the effects on SM precision observables, as well as to bounds from flavor physics and high energy colliders. Finally, we consider the possibility that $\chi$ is dark matter and study ensuing astrophysical and cosmological constraints. We show that despite stringent constraints on the shape of the main part of the CMB spectrum, there is considerable room for its modification within its Rayleigh-Jeans (RJ) end, $\omega \ll T_{\rm CMB}$. We construct explicit New Physics models that give an order one (or larger) increase of photon count in the RJ tail, which can be tested by existing and upcoming experiments aiming to detect the cosmological 21 cm emission/absorption signal. This class of models stipulates the decay of unstable particles to dark photons, $A'$, that have a small mass, $m_{A'} \sim 10^{-14} - 10^{-9}$ eV, non-vanishing mixing angle $\epsilon$ with electromagnetism, and energies much smaller than $T_{\rm CMB}$. The non-thermal number density of dark photons can be many orders of magnitude above the number density of CMB photons, and even a small probability of $A'\to A$ oscillations, for values of as small as $\epsilon \sim 10^{-9}$, can significantly increase the number of RJ photons. In particular, we show that resonant oscillations of dark photons into regular photons in the interval of redshifts $20 < z < 1700$ can be invoked as an explanation of the recent tentative observation of a stronger-than-expected absorption signal of 21 cm photons. We consider the generic possibility that the Universe's energy budget includes some form of relativistic or semi-relativistic dark radiation (DR) with non-gravitational interactions with Standard Model (SM) particles. Such dark radiation may consist of SM singlets or a non-thermal, energetic component of neutrinos. If such DR is created at a relatively recent epoch, it can carry sufficient energy to leave a detectable imprint in experiments designed to search for very weakly interacting particles: dark matter and underground neutrino experiments. We analyze this possibility in some generality, assuming that the interactive dark radiation is sourced by late decays of an unstable particle, potentially a component of dark matter, and considering a variety of possible interactions between the dark radiation and SM particles. Concentrating on the sub-GeV energy region, we derive constraints on different forms of DR using the results of the most sensitive neutrino and dark matter direct detection experiments. In particular, for interacting dark radiation carrying a typical momentum of $\sim30$~MeV$/c$, both types of experiments provide competitive constraints. If dark matter (DM) particles are lighter than a few MeV/$c^2$ and can scatter off electrons, their interaction within the solar interior results in a considerable hardening of the spectrum of galactic dark matter received on Earth. For a large range of the mass vs. cross section parameter space, $\{m_e, \sigma_e\}$, the "reflected" component of the DM flux is far more energetic than the endpoint of the ambient galactic DM energy distribution, making it detectable with existing DM detectors sensitive to an energy deposition of $10-10^3$ eV. Dark Matter which interacts strongly with itself, but only feebly with the Standard Model is a possibility that has been entertained to solve apparent small-scale structure problems that are pertinent to the non-interacting cold Dark Matter paradigm. In this paper, we study the simple case in which the self-scattering rate today is regulated by kinematics and/or the abundance ratio, through the mass-splitting of nearly degenerate pseudo-Dirac fermions $\chi_1$ and $\chi_2$ or real scalars $\phi_1$ and $\phi_2$. We calculate the relic density of these states in a scenario where self-scattering proceeds through off-diagonal couplings with a vector particle $V$ (Dark Photon) and where the abundance is set through number-depleting 4-to-2 reactions in the hidden sector, or, alternatively, via freeze-in. We study the implications of the considered models and their prospect of solving astrophysical small-scale structure problems. The direct detection of Dark Matter particles with mass below the GeV-scale is hampered by soft nuclear recoil energies and finite detector thresholds. For a given maximum relative velocity, the kinematics of elastic Dark Matter nucleus scattering sets a principal limit on detectability. Here we propose to bypass the kinematic limitations by considering the inelastic channel of photon emission in the nuclear recoil. Our proposed method allows to set the first limits on Dark Matter below 500 MeV in the plane of Dark Matter mass and cross section with nucleons. Inspired by the string axiverse idea, it has been suggested that the recent transition from decelerated to accelerated cosmic expansion is driven by an axion-like quintessence field with a sub-Planckian decay constant. The scenario requires that the axion field be rather near the maximum of its potential, but is less finely tuned than other explanations of cosmic acceleration. The model is parametrized by an axion decay constant $f$, the axion mass $m$, and an initial misalignment angle $|\theta_i|$ which is close to $\pi$. In order to determine the $m$ and $\theta_{i}$ values consistent with observations, these parameters are mapped onto observables: the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ at and angular diameter distance $d_{A}(z)$ to redshift $z= 0.57$, as well as the angular sound horizon of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale at $z\simeq 0.57$ by the BOSS survey and Planck measurements of CMB temperature anisotropies are then used to probe the $\left\{m,f,\theta_i\right\}$ parameter space. With current data, CMB constraints are the most powerful, allowing a fraction of only $\sim 0.2$ of the parameter-space volume. We point out that the cosmological abundance of ${}^7$Li can be reduced down to observed values if during its formation Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is modified by the presence of light electrically neutral particles $X$ that have substantial interactions with nucleons. We find that the lithium problem can be solved without affecting the precisely measured abundances of deuterium and helium if the following conditions are satisfied: the mass and lifetimes of such particles are bounded by $ 1.6~{\rm MeV}\leq m_X \leq 20~{\rm MeV}$ and $ {\rm few}~100~{\rm s} \lesssim \tau_X \lesssim 10^4~{\rm s}$, and the abundance times the absorption cross section by either deuterium or ${}^7$Be are comparable to the Hubble rate, $n_X \sigma_{\rm abs} v \sim H$, at the time of ${}^7$Be formation. We include $X$-initiated reactions into the primordial nucleosynthesis framework, observe that it leads to a substantial reduction of the freeze-out abundances of ${}^7$Li+${}^7$Be, and find specific model realizations of this scenario. Concentrating on the axion-like-particle case, $X=a$, we show that all these conditions can be satisifed if the coupling to $d$-quarks is in the range of $f_d^{-1} \sim {\rm TeV}^{-1}$, which can be probed at intensity frontier experiments., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; v2: minor improvements, matches published version

Dark matter experiments primarily search for the scattering of WIMPs on target nuclei of well shielded underground detectors. The results from liquid scintillator experiments furthermore provide precise probes of very light and very weakly coupled particles that may be absorbed by electrons. New Abelian U(1)' gauge bosons $V_{\mu}$ can couple to the Standard Model through mixing of the associated field strength tensor $V_{\mu\nu}$ with the one from hypercharge, $F_{\mu\nu}^Y$. Dark matter detectors built primarily to probe elastic scattering of WIMPs on nuclei are also precise probes of light, weakly coupled particles that may be absorbed by the detector material. In this paper, we derive constraints on the minimal model of dark matter comprised of long-lived vector states V (dark photons) in the 0.01-100 keV mass range. The absence of an ionization signal in direct detection experiments such as XENON10 and XENON100 places a very strong constraint on the dark photon mixing angle, down to $O(10^{-15})$, assuming that dark photons comprise the dominant fraction of dark matter. This sensitivity to dark photon dark matter exceeds the indirect bounds derived from stellar energy loss considerations over a significant fraction of the available mass range. We also revisit indirect constraints from $V\to 3\gamma$ decay and show that limits from modifications to the cosmological ionization history are comparable to the updated limits from the diffuse gamma-ray flux., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures; numerical bug in J-factor corrected; main results unchanged

String theories suggest the existence of a plethora of axion-like fields with masses spread over a huge number of decades. Here we show that these ideas lend themselves to a model of quintessence with no super-Planckian field excursions and in which all dimensionless numbers are order unity. The scenario addresses the "why now" problem, i.e., why has accelerated expansion begun only recently, by suggesting that the onset of dark-energy domination occurs randomly with a slowly decreasing probability per unit logarithmic interval in cosmic time. The standard axion potential requires us to postulate a rapid decay of most of the axion fields that do no become dark energy. The need for these decays is averted, though, with the introduction of a slightly modified axion potential. In either case, a Universe like ours arises in roughly 1 in 100 universes. We explore the cosmological consequences of kinetically mixed dark photons with a mass between 1 MeV and 10 GeV, and an effective electromagnetic fine structure constant as small as $10^{-38}$. We calculate the freeze-in abundance of these dark photons in the early Universe and explore the impact of late decays on BBN and the CMB. We study the dissipation of small-scale adiabatic perturbations at early times when the Universe is hotter than T ~ 0.5 keV. When the wavelength falls below the damping scale 1/kD, the acoustic modes diffuse and thermalize, causing entropy production. Before neutrino decoupling, kD is primarily set by the neutrino shear viscosity, and we study the effect of acoustic damping on the relic neutrino number, primordial nucleosynthesis, dark-matter freeze-out, and baryogenesis. This sets a new limit on the amplitude of primordial fluctuations of DeltaR^2 < 0.007 at 10^4/Mpc< k < 10^5/Mpc and a model dependent limit of DeltaR^2 < 0.3 at k < 10^{20-25}/Mpc., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Motivated by various kinds of new physics models, a new light neutral vector boson (the dark photon) connected to the Standard Model of particle physics only through the kinetic mixing with the U(1)_Y factor has been studied extensively. Various kinds of experiments are proposed to detect it. For the dark photon with a mass smaller than 10 keV, it can be copiously produced inside the Sun, and then be detected by the detectors on the earth. We show that with the S2 only analysis, the result from XENON10 experiment provides the up-to-date most stringent limit on the region 10^{-5} eV < m_V < 10^3 eV: kappa m_V < 3 times 10^{-12} eV for the Stueckelberg dark photon model, where kappa is the kinetic mixing and m_V is the mass of the dark photon. If there is a light Higgs boson accompanied with the dark photon, the sensitivity of XENON10 experiment is kappa times e' < 10^{-13}, which is still second to the constraints from the lifetime of horizontal branch starts which dictates kappa times e' < 3 times10^{-14}., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. The elastic nuclear recoil signal, being under intense scrutiny by multiple underground experiments, can be interpreted either as coming from the interaction of nuclei with WIMP dark matter or from the scattering of new species of MeV-energy neutrinos. The most promising model for the latter case is a neutrino $\nu_b$ that interacts with baryon number, and with a flux sourced by the oscillations of regular solar $^8$B neutrinos. We re-analyze this model in light of the latest experimental results. In contrast to the light-DM interpretation of various tentative positive signals (anomalies) that is now seriously challenged by the negative results of the LUX experiment, the neutrino interpretation remains a viable explanation to most of the anomalies. Considering future prospects, we show that the superCDMS experiment alone, when equipped with Ge and Si detectors, will be able to detect $\nu_b$ and discriminate the model from a light DM interpretation.
