We present a theoretical model describing the photo-electrical response of a system composed of quantum dots embedded in a dielectric matrix. The model is based on the non-coherent rate equations and the Transfer Hamiltonian formalism. The self charge was included. Within this methodology, the response of the system only depends on fundamental material parameters and its geometry. Transport through several quantum dot configurations was simulated obtaining current-voltage curves in dark and illuminating conditions for three different scenarios: single one quantum dot and two quantum dots in parallel and serial configurations. Despite the simplicity of the model, it has been used to reproduce successfully experimental results., Comment: 11 figures

We present a model of electron transport through a random distribution of interacting quantum dots embedded in a dielectric matrix to simulate realistic devices. The method underlying the model depends only on fundamental parameters of the system and it is based on the Transfer Hamiltonian approach. A set of non-coherent rate equations can be written and the interaction between the quantum dots and between the quantum dots and the electrodes are introduced by transition rates and capacitive couplings. A realistic modelization of the capacitive couplings, the transmission coefficients, the electron/hole tunneling currents and the density of states of each quantum dot have been taken into account. A transport methodology to study the electron transport between quantum dots arrays based in Transfer Hamiltonian approach is presented. The interactions between the quantum dots and between the quantum dots and the electrodes are introduced by transition rates and capacitive couplings. The effects of the local potential are computed within the self-consistent field regime. The model has been developed and expressed in a matrix form in order to make it extendable to larger systems. Transport through several quantum dot configurations have been studied in order to validate the model. Despite the simplicity of the model, well-known effects are satisfactorily reproduced and explained. The results qualitatively agree with other results obtained using more complex theoretical approaches.

Investigation at a $\phi$--factory can shed light on several debated issues in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of kaons and eta/eta$^\prime$ mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter sector. We analyze how the recent precise hadronic tau-decay data on the V-A spectral function and general properties of QCD such as analyticity, the operator product expansion and chiral perturbation theory (ChPT), can be used to improve the knowledge of some of the low-energy constants of ChPT. A sum rule analysis of the hadronic tau-decay data can be used to determine the low-energy constants L10(mu) and C87(mu). These constants are QCD chiral-order parameters, which appear at order p^4 and p^6, respectively, in the chiral perturbation theory expansion of the V-A correlator. At order p^4 we obtain L10(M_rho) = -(5.22\pm 0.06)10^-3. Including in the analysis the order p^6 contributions, we get L10(M_rho) = -(4.06\pm 0.39)10^-3 and C87(M_rho) = (4.89\pm 0.19)10^-3 GeV^-2., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. The recent update of the strange spectral function and the moments of the invariant mass distribution by the OPAL collaboration from hadronic tau decay data are employed to determine |V_us| as well as m_s. Our result, |V_us|=0.2208\pm0.0034, is competitive to the standard extraction of |V_us| from K_e3 decays and to the new proposals to determine it. Furthermore, the error associated to our determination of |V_us| can be reduced in the future since it is dominated by the experimental uncertainty that will be eventually much improved by the B-factories hadronic tau data. Another improvement that can be performed is the simultaneous fit of both |V_us| and m_s to a set of moments of the hadronic tau decays invariant mass distribution, which will provide even a more accurate determination of both parameters., Comment: 6 pages. Recent experimental results on hadronic tau decays into strange particles by the OPAL collaboration are employed to determine V_us and m_s from moments of the invariant mass distribution. Our results are V_us = 0.2208+-0.0034 and m_s(2 GeV) = 81+-22 MeV. The error on V_us is dominated by experiment, and should be improvable in the future. Nevertheless, already now our result is competitive to the standard extraction of V_us from K_e3 decays, and it is compatible with unitarity., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

The measurement of epsilon'/epsilon has left open several theoretical problems, the most important of which is an accurate calculation of the relevant hadronic matrix elements. Here we study the possibility of relating epsilon' to CP violation in charged K-> 3 pi, which can provide information on the reliability of such calculations. We discuss the role of final state interactions and the main sources of uncertainties. We find that the measurement of Delta g_C in K-> 3 pi is a crucial consistency test for the Standard Model calculations of epsilon'. The mass of the strange quark is determined from SU(3)-breaking effects in the tau hadronic width. Compared to previous analyses, the contributions from scalar and pseudoscalar spectral functions, which suffer from large perturbative corrections, are replaced by phenomenological parametrisations. This leads to a sizeable reduction of the uncertainties in the strange mass from tau decays. Nevertheless, the resulting m_s value is still rather sensitive to the moment of the invariant mass distribution which is used for the determination, as well as the size of the quark-mixing matrix element |V_us|. Imposing the unitarity fit for the CKM matrix, we obtain m_s(2 GeV)=117+-17 MeV, whereas for the present Particle Data Group average for |V_us|, we find m_s(2 GeV)=103+-17 MeV. On the other hand, using an average of m_s from other sources as an input, we are able to calculate the quark-mixing matrix element |V_us|, and we demonstrate that if the present measurement of the hadronic decay of the tau into strange particles is improved by a factor of two, the determination of |V_us| is more precise than the current world average., Comment: 25 pages, 1 eps figure

Quark mass corrections to the tau hadronic width play a significant role only for the strange quark, hence providing a method for determining its mass. The experimental input is the vector plus axial-vector strange spectral function derived from a complete study of tau decays into strange hadronic final states performed by ALEPH. New results on strange decay modes from other experiments are also incorporated. The present analysis determines the strange quark mass at the Mtau mass scale using moments of the spectral function. Justified theoretical constraints are applied to the nonperturbative components and careful attention is paid to the treatment of the perturbative expansions of the moments which exhibit convergence problems. The result obtained, m_s(Mtau^2) = (120 +- 11_exp +- 8_Vus +- 19_th) MeV = (120^+21_-26) MeV, is stable over the scale from Mtau down to about 1.4 GeV. Evolving this result to customary scales yields m_s(1 GeV^2) = (160^+28_-35) MeV and m_s(4 GeV^2) = (116^+20_-25) MeV., Comment: LaTex, 8 pages, 4 figures (EPS)

The recent ALEPH measurements of the inclusive Cabibbo--suppressed decay width of the $\tau$ and several moments of its invariant mass distribution are used to determine the value of the strange quark mass. We obtain, in the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme, $m_s(M_\tau^2) = (119\pm 24)$ MeV, which corresponds to $ m_s(1 {\rm GeV}^2) = (164 \pm 33) {\rm MeV}, m_s(4 {\rm GeV}^2) = (114\pm 23) {\rm MeV} $., Comment: 5pages. We update the constraints on the right-handed $W_R$ gauge boson mass, mixing angle $\zeta$ with the left-handed $W_L$ gauge boson, and other parameters in general left-right symmetric models with different mechanisms of CP violation. Constraints mostly independent of any assumption on the quark sector are obtained from a re-analysis of muon decay data. Estimates of the left-right hadronic matrix elements in the neutral kaon system and their uncertainties are revised using large $N_c$ and Chiral Perturbation Theory arguments. With explicitly given assumptions on the long-distance $(\Delta S=1)^2$ contributions to the $K_L-K_S$ mass difference, lower bounds on $M_{W_R}$ are obtained. With the same assumptions, one also gets strong upper bounds from the CP-violating parameter $\epsilon_K$, for most of the parameter space of left-right models where the right-handed third family does not contribute in CP-violating quantities., Comment: 17 pages, latex

We discuss the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model as a low energy expansion, all two-point functions and an example of a three-point function to all orders in momenta and quark masses. The model is treated at leading level in $1/N_c$ but otherwise exact. Some comments about the QCD flavour anomaly and Vector Meson Dominance in this class of models is made. We summarize the present knowledge on the non-perturbative hadronic inputs needed in the analysis of $B^0$-$\bar B^0$ mixing and the CP-violating parameter $\varepsilon$ of the $K^0$-$\bar K^0$ system. Chiral defect fermions on the lattice in 4+1 dimensions are analyzed using mean field theory. The fermion propagator has a localized chiral mode in weak coupling but loses it when the coupling in the unphysical fifth direction becomes too large. We study the unknown coupling constants that appear at order $p^4$ in the Chiral Perturbation Theory analysis of $K \to \pi \gamma^* \to \pi l^+ l^-$, $K^{+-} \to \pi^{+-} \gamma \gamma$ and $K \to \pi \pi \gamma$ decays. To that end, we compute the chiral realization of the $\Delta S \, = \, 1$ Hamiltonian in the framework of the $1/N_c$-expansion of the low-energy action.
