6. XMM-Newton Data Processing for Faint Diffuse Emission: Proton Flares, Exposure Maps and Report on EPIC MOS1 Bright CCDs Contamination

Abstract

We present a study of the in-flight performance of the XMM-Newton EPIC MOS and pn detectors, with focus on the influence of proton flares and vignetting on the data. The very wide range in the conditions of our sample of observations, in terms of exposure length and background intensities, allows the detection of a wide range in the spectra of the proton flares, in contrast to the hard-spectrum flares proposed by Lumb et al.(2002) or Read et al.(2003) We also find an up to now unreported contamination in the low energy regime (E<0.5 keV) of the MOS1 observations, consisting of a significant increase in the measured intensities in two CCDs at the edges of the detector. This contamination yields in "bright CCDs" in the observations. Its effect must be taken into account for the study of sources detected in the affected CCDs. With respect to vignetting, we present in-flight exposure maps and we propose a method to repeat this calculation for user-definable energy bands. All the results presented here, have the goal to enable the study of very faint extended sources with XMM-Newton, like nearby galactic X-ray halos or the soft X-ray background., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. 8. The 3-D composition of the Galactic interstellar medium. The hot phases and X-ray absorbing material

Abstract

We present maps of the Galactic X-ray Halo and constrain the location of X-ray absorbing gas using the X-ray radiation transfer as distance a indicator. Based on a consistent model of the soft X-ray background (SXRB) and the ROSAT all-sky survey, we derive the morphology of some components involved in the SXRB. In particular we focus on their spatial and temperature distributions across the sky. Starting from our SXRB model, we extract information on the 3-dimensional composition of the X-ray emitting and absorbing material. Using this approach, it is possible to differentiate between absorbing gas within or behind the Galactic X-ray Halo., Comment: Astron. 9. The soft X-ray background towards the northern sky. A detailed analysis of the Milky Way halo

Abstract

We present a correlation analysis of the diffuse X-ray background emission of the ROSAT all-sky survey with the Leiden/Dwingeloo 21-cm HI line survey. We derive a consistent model for the diffuse X-ray background emission over about 50% of the sky. Only three diffuse X-ray components are necessary to fit the ROSAT data from 0.1 keV to 2.4 keV: a) the Local Hot Bubble, b) the Milky Way Halo, and c) the extragalactic X-ray background. Only one temperature of the hot coronal gas in the Milky Way Halo is needed. Our model predicts, that a major fraction of the 1/4 keV and about 50% of the 3/4 keV diffuse X-ray emission originates from the Milky Way Halo. We detect a difference between the intensities towards the Galactic center and its anti-center, which is consistent with the electron density distribution independently derived from pulsar dispersion measurements., Comment: Astron. 10. On the Temperature and Intensity Distribution of the Galactic X-ray Plasma

Abstract

We present the results of our investigation of the composition of the diffuse soft X-ray background emission (SXRB). Combining data of the Leiden/Dwingeloo HI Survey and the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS), we set up a radiation transport equation in order to model the SXRB. Two different techniques lead to the model parameters: An image oriented approach which compares observed and modeled maps of the 1/4 and 3/4 keV X-ray energy regime and a more analytic approach using scatter diagrams. The analysis shows that only three independent components of the emitting plasma (local, halo and extragalactic) are needed to explain the SXRB. Abstract

Soil characteristics are considered important for land use planning. Castilla La Mancha (Central Spain) has the highest concentration of vineyards in the world (about 474,000 ha). This study represents a mapping exercise to evaluate the agronomic suitability for viticulture in continental Mediterranean environment. Our study integrates data information from 33 soil profiles, that mostly developed on calcareous material (limestones, marls, and various calcareous sediments), volcanic rocks (basalt, ash, and lapillis) and/or Paleozoic rocks (quartzites, sandstones, schists, or slates) in Almagro (Castilla-La Mancha, central Spain). A distinctive feature of this region is the remarkable pedodiversity. Due to the differences in soil properties, the landforms positions entail soils with different characteristics and therefore with different limitations for land use and productivity. The presence of calcareous horizons, with alkaline pH that affects soil fertility, specifically in low values P and micronutrients such as Fe, Cu and Zn, entails resulting in yield reductions, which the wine growers normally opt for certain rootstock types. We conclude that conditions are optimal for agricultural production and sustainable vine production. These results can help policy makers in their planning of optimal land use in addition to campaigns for the improvement the region's image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A comprehensive investigation has been carried out into the concentrations of a range of REEs (neodymium Nd, cerium Ce, lanthanum La, yttrium Y, scandium Sc) in soils of vineyards belonging to the protected denomination of origin (PDO) Valdepeñas (Central Spain). The mean concentrations (expressed in mg kg−1) are Ce 70.6, Nd 32.9, La 36.2, Y 21.6, and Sc 13.7 in surface horizons (Ap), while in subsurface horizons (Bt or Bw and some Ck), the values are Ce 67.6, Nd 31.8, La 34.4, Y 19.6, and Sc 13.9. The relative abundance in these soils is Ce > La > Nd > Y > Sc in both the surface and subsurface horizons. These values are close to, or slightly higher than, the regional levels but similar to national and global averages, although relatively high values have been detected at certain sampling points. Another aim was to explain the spatial variations in these elements within the territory under study. It was found that the spatial variations are due to the nature of the parent materials and the pedogenetic processes, although the sparse spatial distribution patterns with prominent anomalies are interpreted arising from anthropogenic sources (fertilization). Abstract

Objective: To describe the frequency and clinical characteristics of patients referred to a tertiary neuromuscular clinic as having amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) but who were re-diagnosed as having an ALS mimic syndrome, and to identify the reasons that led to the revision of the diagnosis. Methods: We reviewed the final diagnosis of all patients prospectively registered in the Sant Pau-MND register from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2015. A detailed clinical evaluation and a clinically-guided electrophysiological study were performed at first evaluation. Results: Twenty of 314 (6.4%) patients included were re-diagnosed as having a condition other than ALS, in 18 cases already at first evaluation. An alternative specific diagnosis was identified in 17 of those 20, consisting of a wide range of conditions. The main finding leading to an alternative diagnosis was the result of the electrophysiological study. Fifty per cent did not fulfil the El Escorial revised criteria (EECr) for ALS. The most common clinical phenotype at onset in patients with ALS mimic syndromes was progressive muscular atrophy (PMA). Conclusions: Misdiagnosing ALS is still a common problem. Early identification of ALS mimic syndromes is possible based on atypical clinical features and a clinically-guided electrophysiological study. Patients should be attended in specialised centres. Abstract

Time-resolved imaging is carried out to study the dynamics of the laser-induced forward transfer of an aqueous solution at different laser fluences. The transfer mechanisms are elucidated, and directly correlated with the material deposited at the analyzed irradiation conditions. It is found that there exists a fluence range in which regular and well-defined droplets are deposited. In this case, laser pulse energy absorption results in the formation of a plasma, which expansion originates a cavitation bubble in the liquid. After the further expansion and collapse of the bubble, a long and uniform jet is developed, which advances at a constant velocity until it reaches the receptor substrate. On the other hand, for lower fluences no material is deposited. In this case, although a jet can be also generated, it recoils before reaching the substrate. For higher fluences, splashing is observed on the receptor substrate due to the bursting of the cavitation bubble. Finally, a discussion of the possible mechanisms which lead to such singular dynamics is also provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) is a laser direct-write technique that offers the possibility of printing patterns with a high spatial resolution from a wide range of materials in a solid or liquid state, such as conductors, dielectrics, and biomolecules in solution. This versatility has made LIFT a very promising alternative to lithography-based processes for the rapid prototyping of biomolecule microarrays. Here, we study the transfer process through the LIFT of droplets of a solution suitable for microarray preparation. The laser pulse energy and beam size were systematically varied, and the effect on the transferred droplets was evaluated. Controlled transfers in which the deposited droplets displayed optimal features could be obtained by varying these parameters. In addition, the transferred droplet volume displayed a linear dependence on the laser pulse energy. This dependence allowed determining a threshold energy density value, independent of the laser focusing conditions, which acted as necessary conditions for the transfer to occur. The corresponding sufficient condition was given by a different total energy threshold for each laser beam dimension. The threshold energy density was found to be the dimensional parameter that determined the amount of the transferred liquid per laser pulse, and there was no substantial loss of material due to liquid vaporization during the transfer. Abstract

Our objective was to determine the incidence and clinical-epidemiological characteristics of an ALS cohort patient in Catalonia (Spain). We conducted a population based registry for a three-year period (1999-2001) in Catalonia (6,361,365 inhabitants) using several sources of information. The original El Escorial diagnostic criteria (1994) for ALS were applied for the classification of patients. New cases diagnosed between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2001 were 215 (118 males and 97 females), with an annual crude incidence rate of 1.4/100,000 (95% CI 1.3-1.8). This rate showed a peak age between 75 and 79 years. The incidence rate was 1.6 (95% CI 1.5-2.2) in males and 1.2 (95% CI 1.1-1.7) in females. Prevalence at the end of the period was 5.4/100,000 of the total population. Median age at onset was 64.3 years. Onset of symptoms was bulbar or generalized in 38% of cases. Mean disease duration at diagnosis was 11.0 months. Median time of survival from onset was 30.8 months. In conclusion, ALS incidence in Catalonia is within the range of other countries across Europe with different geographic, environmental and socioeconomic situations. However, as in other studies conducted in the Mediterranean area, Catalonia incidence is in the lower range of rates in Europe.

Abstract

The 3-D structure and composition of the Galactic interstellar medium can be deduced from soft X-ray absorption observations. For this purpose, we cross-correlate the ROSAT all-sky survey with the HI 21-cm line all-sky distribution provided by the Leiden/Dwingweloo and Instituto Argentino de Radioastronomía surveys. We analyse the data for the whole ROSAT-PSPC energy window (0.1 keV to 2.1 keV) to derive a consistent model of the diffuse X-ray background radiation. This approach allows to deduce the 3-D structure of X-ray absorbing and emitting gas and to constrain the distance to some high- (HVC) and intermediate-velocity cloud (IVC) complexes. Abstract

The term hemobilia is used to describe the presence of blood in the biliary tract. We report a case of symptomatic hemobilia associated with chronic cholecystitis in a 57-year-old man with jaundice, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and epigastric pain. We review the etiology of this condition and highlight the role of abdominal ultrasonography in its diagnosis. In our case, abdominal ultrasonography revealed the presence of clots inside the gallbladder. The clinical condition was resolved by means of a cholecystectomy. The patient had an uneventful recovery.
