3. Particle-hole symmetry broken solutions in graphene nanoribbons: a multi-orbital, mean-field perspective

Abstract

Mean-field theories have since long predicted edge magnetism in graphene nanoribbons, where the order parameter is given by the local magnetization. However, signatures of edge magnetism appears elusive in the experiments, suggesting another class of solutions. We employ a self-consistent mean field approximation within a multi-orbital tight-binding model and obtain particle-hole symmetry broken solutions, where the local filling plays the role of the order parameter. Unlike the magnetic edge solutions, these are topologically non-trivial and show zero local magnetization. A small and a large doping regime are studied, and a free energy minimum for finite hole doping is encountered, which may serve as an explanation for the absence of experimental evidence for magnetic edge states in zigzag graphene nanoribbons. The electronic interaction may increase the finite \(d\)-orbital occupation, which leads to a change of the effective Coulomb interaction of the dominant \(p_z\)-orbitals. Our findings indicate that the non-magnetic solution for finite hole doping becomes energetically preferred, compared to the magnetic phases at half-filling, once thermal fluctuations or unintentional doping from the substrate are considered. This result persists even in the presence of the \(d\)-orbitals and the Coulomb interaction therein., Comment: 7 figures, 7 pages

Abstract

The low-lying states of graphene contain exciting topological properties that depend on the interplay of different symmetry breaking terms. The corresponding energy gaps remained unexplored until recently, owing to the low energy scale of the terms involved (few tens of ueV). These low energy terms include sublattice splitting, the Rashba and the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, whose balance determines the topological properties. In this work, we unravel the contributions arising from the sublattice and the intrinsic spin orbit splitting in graphene on hexagonal boron-nitride. Employing resistively-detected electron spin resonance, we measure a sublattice splitting of the order of 20E-6 eV, and confirm an intrinsic spin orbit coupling of approximately 45E-6 eV. The dominance of the latter suggests a topologically non-trivial state, involving fascinating properties. Electron spin resonance is a promising route towards unveiling the intriguing band structure at low energy scales.

11. Anisotropy of spin coherence in high mobility quantum wells with arbitrary magnetic fields

Abstract

We present a theoretical study of the anisotropy of the spin relaxation and decoherence in typical quantum wells with an arbitrary magnetic field. In such systems, the orientation of the magnetic field relative to the main crystallographic directions is crucial, owing to the lack of spin-rotation symmetry. For typical high mobility samples, relaxation anisotropies in the motional narrowing limit owing to the interplay of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin orbit coupling are calculated. We also include the effect of the cubic-in-momentum terms. Although commonly ignored in literature, the latter were experimentally evidenced by the observation of strong anisotropy in spin decoherence measurements by different experimental groups and has long remained unexplained., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The construction industry plays a fundamental role in economic development and job creation, but it faces challenges of labor productivity that have been exacerbated due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Labor productivity is a critical component of success, asit influences the duration, costs, and efficiency of projects. Understanding the nature of factors affecting labor productivity is essential to finding solutions. This study examined the literature to identify key factors influencing labor productivity, departing from conventional analytical approaches. Through mixed-methods analysis, qualitative approaches of systematic reviews identified influential factors based on 97 documents. Subsequently, they were classified using a combination of statistical analysis and hierarchical clustering methods that encompassed both internal and external factors. The Importance Value Index allowed for the classification of the 30 most critical factors, analyzing three possible ranking scenarios. The study found that the interest in researching the topic remains relevant and has evolved over time. In recent years, greater attention has been paid to labor, management, work environment, and technical aspects. The results indicate that internal project factors, such as scheduling, planning, technical considerations, and resource management, are more predictable and controllable than external factors. Effective resource management and a comprehensive approach are essential for optimizing construction productivity. Project-level factors, as well as materials, tools, and equipment, play an important role. By synthesizing existing knowledge and identifying and classifying key productivity factors, this study offers valuable insights to construction professionals, policymakers, and researchers seeking to improve labor productivity and optimize project outcomes., La industria de la construcción desempeña un papel fundamental en el desarrollo económico y la generación de empleo, pero enfrenta desafíos de productividad laboral que se han intensificado debido a la reciente pandemia de COVID-19. La productividad laboral es un componente crítico de éxito, ya que influye en la duración, los costos y la eficiencia de los proyectos. Comprender la naturaleza de los factores que afectan la productividad laboral es esencial para encontrar soluciones. Este estudio examinó la literatura para identificar factores clave que influyen en la productividad laboral, apartándose de los enfoques analíticos convencionales. A través de un análisis de métodos mixtos, los enfoques cualitativos de revisiones sistemáticas identificaron factores influyentes basados en 97 documentos. Posteriormente, se clasificaron mediante una combinación de análisis estadístico y métodos de agrupación jerárquica que abarcaron tanto factores internos como externos. El Índice de Valor de Importancia permitió la clasificación de los 30 factores más críticos, analizando tres posibles escenarios de clasificación. El estudio encontró que el interés en investigar el tema sigue siendo relevante y ha evolucionado con el tiempo. En los últimos años, se ha prestado mayor atención a la mano de obra, la gestión, el entorno de trabajo y los aspectos técnicos. Los resultados indican que los factores internos del proyecto, como la programación, la planificación, las consideraciones técnicas y la gestión de recursos, son más predecibles y controlables que los factores externos. Una gestión eficaz de los recursos y un enfoque integral son fundamentales para optimizar la productividad de la construcción. Los factores a nivel de proyecto, así como los materiales, herramientas y equipos, desempeñan un papel importante. 20. Double coupled electron shuttle

Abstract

A nano-shuttle consisting of two metallic islands connected in series and integrated between two contacts is studied. We evaluate the electron transport through the system in the presence of a source-drain voltage with and without an RF excitation. We evaluate the response of the system in terms of the net direct current generated by the mechanical motion of the oscillators. An introduction to the charge stability diagram is given in terms of electrochemical potentials and mechanical displacements. The low capacitance of the islands allows the observation of Coulomb blockade even at room temperature. Using radio frequency excitations, the nonlinear dynamics of the system is studied. The oscillators can be tuned to unstable regions where mechanically assisted transfer of electrons can further increase the amplitude of motion, resulting of a net energy being pumped into the system. The instabilities can be exploited to parametrically amplify the response to an excitation, suggesting a practical scheme for detection of mechanical motion of nanoscale objects.

21. Spin-orbit splittings in Si/SiGe quantum wells

Abstract

We present a calculation of the wavevector-dependent subband level splitting from spin-orbit coupling in Si/SiGe quantum wells. We first use the effective-mass approach, where the splittings are parameterized by separating contributions from the Rashba and Dresselhaus terms. We then determine the parameters by fitting tight-binding numerical results obtained using the quantitative nanoelectronic modeling tool, NEMO-3D. We describe the relevant parameters as a function of applied electric field and well width in our numerical simulations. For a silicon membrane, we find the bulk Rashba parameter to be linear in field, $\alpha = \alpha^1E_z$ with $\alpha^1 \simeq 2\times$ 10 $^{-5}$nm$^{-2}$. The dominant contribution to the spin-orbit splitting is from Dresselhaus-type terms, and the magnitude for a typical flat SiGe/Si/SiGe quantum well can be as high as 1$\mu$eV., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We investigate spin-flip processes of Si quantum dots due to spin-orbit coupling. We utilize the spin-orbit coupling constants related to bulk and structure inversion asymmetry obtained numerically for two dimensional heterostructures. We find that the spin-flip rate is very sensitive to these coupling constants. 32. Singlet-Triplet Relaxation in Two-electron Silicon Quantum Dots

Abstract

We investigate the singlet-triplet relaxation process of a two electron silicon quantum dot. In the absence of a perpendicular magnetic field, we find that spin-orbit coupling is not the main source of singlet-triplet relaxation. Relaxation in this regime occurs mainly via virtual states and is due to nuclear hyperfine coupling. In the presence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the dot, the spin-orbit coupling is important and virtual states are not required. We find that there can be strong anisotropy for different field directions: parallel magnetic field can increase substantially the relaxation time due to Zeeman splitting, but when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plane, the enhancement of the spin-orbit effect shortens the relaxation time. We find the relaxation to be orders of magnitude longer than for GaAs quantum dots, due to weaker hyperfine and spin-orbit effects., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The recently introduced Minimalist Model [Vazquez- Prada et al., 2002] of characteristic earthquakes provides a simple representation of the seismicity originated in a sin- gle fault. Here, we first characterize the properties of this model for large systems. Then, assuming, as it has been observed, that the size of the faults in a big enough region is fractally distributed, with a fractal dimension D = 1.7, we describe the total seismicity produced in that region. The resulting catalogue accounts for the addition of all the characteristic events triggered in the faults and also includes the rest of non-characteristic earthquakes. The global accumulated size-frequency relation correctly describes a Gutenberg-Richter form, with a b exponent of around 0.7., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The time to failure, $T$, of dynamical models of fracture for a hierarchical load-transfer geometry is studied. Using a probabilistic strategy and juxtaposing hierarchical structures of height $n$, we devise an exact method to compute $T$, for structures of height $n+1$. Bounding $T$, for large $n$, we are able to deduce that the time to failure tends to a non-zero value when $n$ tends to infinity. Abstract

For years limited Monte Carlo simulations have led to the suspicion that the time to failure of hierarchically organized load-transfer models of fracture is non-zero for sets of infinite size. This fact could have a profound significance in engineering practice and also in geophysics. Here, we develop an exact algebraic iterative method to compute the successive time intervals for individual breaking in systems of height $n$ in terms of the information calculated in the previous height $n-1$. As a byproduct of this method, rigorous lower and higher bounds for the time to failure of very large systems are easily obtained. Abstract

The recent successes of superconducting qubits and the demonstration of quantum supremacy over classical bits herald a new era for information processing. Yet, the field is still in its infancy and there exist viable alternative candidates that can also store quantum information. In this review, we will highlight ideas, attempts, and the experimental progress to address nuclear spins in graphene, a readily available Dirac semimetal that consists of a single layer of carbon atoms. Carbon isotopes with a nuclear spin are rare in natural graphene. However, it is possible to enrich the spin-bearing 13C isotopes to produce large-scale graphene sheets, which constitute the testbed to store, transport, and retrieve spin information, or to engineer nanostructures. Here, the hyperfine interaction between the electron spins and the nuclear spins serves as an experimental control knob and mediator to address nuclear polarization and nuclear spin coherence times through electrical measurements. The exploitation of nuclear spins in graphene is thus an alluring perspective. We will discuss methods to synthesize 13C graphene and show experimental approaches and challenges to exploit the relatively weak hyperfine interaction in two-dimensional 13C graphene devices. The ultimate purpose, i.e., the exploitation of nuclear spins in graphene for information processing, is not within reach, but its potential for future applications merits a revisit of the current state-of-the-art. Abstract

BACKGROUND // The availability in the literature of data related to perinatal variables in the Spanish population is very scarce. The aim of this study was to know the evolution of perinatal health indicators according to the risk groups of prematurity and birth weight, the proportion of multiple births, caesarean section and stillbirths. METHODS // We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study of births in eleven hospitals in Castilla y León (January 2015 to June 2020). There were 70,024 newborns from 68,769 deliveries. Jointpoint regression analysis was used to identify changes in trend over the years, and binomial logistic regression was used to adjust for the potential interaction of hospital type, sex, type of delivery and multiple births on the frequencies of prematurity and death. RESULTS // There was a 19.9% decrease in deliveries and a 42% decrease in multiple births, with no change in preterm (7.7%) and stillbirths (0.44%). The percentage of caesarean sections was 21.5% with a slight downward trend over time. Death (stillbirth) was associated with preterm multiple birth; especially with the male-male combination (p<0.05). Late preterm and early term newborns showed higher risk of death compared to term newborns: OR 7.7 (95%CI 5.6-10.7) and 2.4 (95%CI 1.6-3.6), respectively; as well as the low birth weight group (OR 17.6; 95%CI 13.9-22.2) and small for gestational age (OR 3.4; 95%CI 1.9-5.8), compared to those of adequate weight. CONCLUSIONS // Prior to the development of the COVID-19 pandemic there is a decline in births, including multiple births, with no change in stillbirths or prematurity. Late preterm and early term newborns are at increased risk of intrauterine death., FUNDAMENTOS // La disponibilidad en la literatura de datos relacionados con variables perinatales en la población española son muy escasos. El objetivo de este estudio fue conocer la evolución de los indicadores de salud perinatal atendiendo a los grupos de riesgo de prematuridad y de peso al nacimiento, la proporción de parto múltiple, de cesárea y de mortinatos. MÉTODOS // Se realizó un estudio transversal poblacional de los partos en once hospitales de Castilla y León (enero de 2015 a junio de 2020). Hubo 70.024 recién nacidos (RN) procedentes de 68.769 partos. Se utilizó el análisis de regresión Jointpoint para identificar cambios en la tendencia a lo largo de los años, y la regresión logística binomial para ajustar la potencial interacción del tipo de hospital, el sexo, el tipo de parto y el parto múltiple en las frecuencias de prematuridad y de fallecimiento. RESULTADOS // Hubo un descenso de partos del 19,9% y de los múltiples del 42%, sin cambios en los RN prematuros (7,7%) ni en los mortinatos (0,44%). El porcentaje de cesáreas fue del 21,5% con una ligera tendencia temporal descendente. El fallecimiento (mortinato) se asoció al parto múltiple pretérmino; especialmente a la combinación varón-varón (p<0,05). Los RN pretérminos tardíos y términos precoces mostraron mayor riesgo de fallecer frente a los RN a término: OR 7,7 (IC95% 5,6-10,7) y 2,4 (IC95% 1,6-3,6), respectivamente; así como el grupo de bajo peso (OR 17,6; IC95% 13,9-22,2) y el pequeño para la edad gestacional (OR 3,4; IC95% 1,9-5,8), frente a los de peso adecuado. CONCLUSIONES // Previo al desarrollo de la pandemia por COVID-19 existe un descenso de la natalidad, incluidos los partos múltiples, sin cambios en los mortinatos ni en la prematuridad. Los RN pretérminos tardío y términos precoces tienen mayor riesgo de fallecer intraútero.

Abstract

The construction industry plays a fundamental role in economic development and job creation, but it faces challenges of labor productivity that have been exacerbated due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Labor productivity is a critical component of success, as it influences the duration, costs, and efficiency of projects. Understanding the nature of factors affecting labor productivity is essential to finding solutions. This study examined the literature to identify key factors influencing labor productivity, departing from conventional analytical approaches. Through mixed-methods analysis, qualitative approaches of systematic reviews identified influential factors based on 97 documents. Subsequently, they were classified using a combination of statistical analysis and hierarchical clustering methods that encompassed both internal and external factors. The Importance Value Index allowed for the classification of the 30 most critical factors, analyzing three possible ranking scenarios. The study found that the interest in researching the topic remains relevant and has evolved over time. In recent years, greater attention has been paid to labor, management, work environment, and technical aspects. The results indicate that internal project factors, such as scheduling, planning, technical considerations, and resource management, are more predictable and controllable than external factors. Effective resource management and a comprehensive approach are essential for optimizing construction productivity. Project-level factors, as well as materials, tools, and equipment, play an important role. By synthesizing existing knowledge and identifying and classifying key productivity factors, this study offers valuable insights to construction professionals, policymakers, and researchers seeking to improve labor productivity and optimize project outcomes. Abstract

Introduction: Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is a hereditary autoinflammatory disease that significantly reduces occupational productivity and quality-of-life in affected patients. Italy has an estimated FMF prevalence of 1 in 60,000 people. While colchicine is the primary treatment for FMF, biologics are administered to intolerant and non-responder patients. Anakinra and canakinumab are the only biologics approved and reimbursed for FMF in Italy. Both medicines have demonstrated efficacy in FMF patients yet differ in treatment costs. This study aimed to perform a budget impact analysis (BIA) following anakinra's reimbursement for FMF treatment, considering pharmaceutical costs from the Italian National Healthcare Service (NHS) perspective. Methods: A 'Reference scenario' (all patients treated with canakinumab) was compared to an 'Alternative scenario', with increased anakinra market shares. The target population was estimated based on the Italian population, epidemiological and market research data. Drugs costs were estimated based on Summary of Product Characteristics and net ex-factory prices. Sensitivity analyses were implemented to test results' robustness. Results:The base case analysis showed an overall cumulative expenditure of €30,586,628 for 'Reference scenario' and € 16,465,548 for 'Alternative scenario'. A cumulative savings of €14,121,080 (46.2%) was calculated over 3 years as a result of the reimbursement and increasing uptake of anakinra. The sensitivity analyses, even considering a discount of 50% for canakinumab, confirmed the base case results. Conclusions: Anakinra's introduction, in FMF treatment, provides a financially sustainable option for Italian patients, with savings increasing according to greater use of anakinra.
