A growing variety of intraoral appliances are being used in dental practice. Insight about the range of applications and practice workflow as well as factors effecting change in practice trends was sought.A survey was developed to ascertain intraoral appliance use, fabrication methods, staff involvement, and patient experiences in dental practice. The survey was sent to ADA Clinical Evaluators Panel members on July 25, 2022, in Qualtrics and remained open for 2 weeks. After 1 week, those who had not responded yet were sent reminders. Data were analyzed descriptively in SAS Version 9.4.Of the 286 respondents (a 28% response rate), 88% reported providing patients with intraoral appliances apart from providing patients with removable partial dentures. More than one-half of the respondents reported offering bleaching trays (88%), flippers or Essix retainers (83%), splints (81%), athletic mouthguards (72%), orthodontic retainers (60%), fluoride trays (56%), and clear aligners (55%). The biggest changes to practice in the past 5 years with respect to intraoral appliances have been intraoral scanning (56%) and the increase in the variety of intraoral appliances in use. Although 72% reported dental assistants were involved in obtaining impressions and fabricating models for intraoral appliances and 76% reported that laboratory technicians were involved in fabricating intraoral appliances, nearly all (97%) respondents indicated that the dentist was involved in the delivery of appliances to patients. Patient education about the use of their appliances appeared to be delivered using multiple approaches, given that it was reported to occur orally (95%), in print (61%), and visually (42%). That 90% of respondents reported having engaged in continuing education courses about intraoral appliances aligns with these appliances becoming a routine part of dental practice, with both increasing applications and improvements in the relevant technology.Intraoral appliances were found to be used commonly in dental practice, and often multiple members of the dental care team were engaged in the fabrication processes.There likely will be ongoing interest in relevant learning opportunities about technologic advances as well as the increasingly diverse list of applications for intraoral appliances.

This paper argues that the trends in advertising and corporatization in dentistry since the 1970s have resulted in processes of de-professionalization and de-regulation, respectively.

After lockdown beginning from the third week of March 2020, face-to-face dentistry is gradually resuming with dental healthcare personnel feeling encouraged to safely provide treatment to the patients amid stringent infection control strategies. Having alerted to the associated infection threat, dentists will be better responding to the challenges of infection control in their clinics. Infection control strategies will follow the rapidly evolving guidelines of the local and international regulatory bodies that are relevant to this pandemic. Despite this, a concern exists as both the dental team members and the patients do not want to be the vectors for this deadly infection; and hence, the need for guidance. This article aims to inform dental healthcare professionals of the guidelines and recommendations to follow when receiving and treating patients in reopened practices. It appears that the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has significantly and adversely impacted dentistry. The impacts seem to have long-term effect on the pattern of dental care; and a need for significant changes in the way dentists will provide dental care from now onwards. A wider use of tele-dentistry consultation platforms will obviously reduce the need for patients 2019; visits to dentists and dental hospitals. The present study aimed to identify the knowledge and attitudes of dental surgeons regarding the guidelines contained in Ordinance SVS/MS No. 453, dated June 1, 1998, in force until the year 2019 and later replaced with Collegiate Board Resolution (RDC) No. 330/19. Our objective was to identify the practices of professionals working in the dental field regarding the knowledge of the essential criteria for performing periapical, interproximal, panoramic, cephalometric or even cone beam computed tomography imaging exams. The research tool was a questionnaire consisting of 45 questions based on Administrative Rule 453/98, which addresses the requirements for the organization and operation of diagnostic radiology services. The questionnaire was sent to 150 dentists via institutional e-mail, and only 55 professionals returned it. The responses revealed that 64% of the dentists declared not to be aware of the guidelines of ordinance 453/98 and 49.1% did not know the basic principles of radioprotection. Regarding the norms related to the environment, including the use of a chronometer, thermometer and time-temperature table, the study revealed that 83.6% of the interviewees did not use such equipment and that 74.5% of them were not aware of the technical details ofthe equipment. Regarding radiographic films, 64.5% answered that they did not know their sensitivity, and 25.5% did not use them as a protective barrier during the exams. Finally, the study revealed that the professional practices adopted by dental surgeons are insufficient to meet the principle contained in ordinance 453/98 and in the RDC 330/19, regarding the exposure of patients to a radiation dose. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar los conocimientos y las actitudes de los cirujanos dentistas en relación con las directrices contenidas en la Ordenanza SVS/MS nº 453 del 1 de junio de 1998 en vigor hasta el año 2019, posteriormente sustituida por la Resolución del Consejo Colegiado nº 330/19. Este enfoque tenía como objetivo identificar las prácticas de los profesionales que trabajan en el ámbito odontológico, en relación con el conocimiento de los criterios esenciales para la realización de exámenes de imagen periapical, interproximal, panorámica, cefalométrica o incluso de tomografía computarizada de haz cónico. El método de investigación empleó un cuestionario compuesto por 45 preguntas basadas en la Norma Administrativa 453/98, que aborda los requisitos para la organización y el funcionamiento de los servicios de radiodiagnóstico, que se envió a 150 dentistas por correo electrónico institucional, y sólo se devolvieron 55 cuestionarios. Entre las respuestas, el 64% de los dentistas declaró no conocer las directrices de la ordenanza 453/98; el 49,1% no conocía los principios básicos de la radioprotección. En cuanto a las normas relacionadas con el medio ambiente, incluyendo el uso de cronómetro, termómetro y tabla de tiempo-temperatura, el estudio evidenció que el 83,6% de los encuestados no utilizan dichos equipos, así como que el 74,5% fueron incapaces de informar sobre los detalles técnicos de los mismos. En cuanto a las películas radiográficas, el 64,5% contestó que no conocía su sensibilidad, así como el 25,5% no las utilizaba como barrera de protección durante los exámenes. Por último, el estudio revela que las prácticas profesionales adoptadas por los cirujanos-dentistas son insuficientes para cumplir con el principio que establece la ley 453/98 y que establece el RDC 330/19, en cuanto a la exposición de los pacientes a la dosis de radiación. Essa abordagem visou identificar as práticas dos profissionais que trabalham na área odontológica, no que diz respeito ao conhecimento dos critérios essenciais para a realização de exames de imagem periapicais, interproximais, panorâmicos, cefalométricas ou mesmo tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico. O método de pesquisa contou com a utilização de um questionário composto por 45 perguntas elaboradas com base na portaria 453/98, que aborda os requisitos para a organização e operação de serviços de radiologia diagnóstica, o qual foi enviado aos participantes 150 cirurgiões-dentistas via e-mail institucional, tendo obtido retorno apenas de 55 questionários. Dentre as respostas, 64% dos cirurgiões-dentistas declararam não ter conhecimento das diretrizes da portaria 453/98; 49,1% não conheciam os princípios básicos da radioproteção. Já quanto às normas relativas ao meio ambiente, incluindo uso de cronômetro, de termômetro e tabela de tempo-temperatura, o estudo evidenciou que 83,6% dos entrevistados não utilizam tais equipamentos, assim como 74,5% desses não souberam informar detalhes técnicos acerca dos equipamentos. Relativo aos filmes radiográficos, 64,5% respondeu desconhecer a sensibilidade desses, bem como 25,5% não os utilizam como barreira de proteção durante os exames. Por fim, o estudo revelou que as práticas profissionais adotadas pelos cirurgiões-dentistas são insuficientes para atender ao princípio que que constava na portaria 453/98 e que constam na RDC 330/19, quanto a exposição dos pacientes à dose de radiação.

Aim Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) being declared a global public health emergency has become a significant challenge for all healthcare workers, including dentistry, recognised as a high‐risk profession during these times. This consensus statement aims to highlight and provide guidelines necessary to be implemented for a clinical dental practice. Materials and Methods A total of nine conservative Dentists and Endodontists and one Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon; with four panelists from government dental colleges, one each from the North, South, East and West India and six resource persons from private colleges in South India, all of them being clinicians and administrators practicing dentistry since the inception of the pandemic, collaborated in this consensus statement. The consensus statement was developed through a symposium conducted on the topics; general dental practice during COVID‐19 times, the importance of aerosols in clinical dental practice in the spread of COVID‐19, effective standard operating protocols for clinical dental practice and Institutional settings with scientific evidence‐based justifications, followed by a panel discussion with to devise mandatory protocols to be followed in clinical and institutional settings. The symposium was attended by 46 practitioners who participated in the deliberation. Results This consensus statement provides clinicians and researchers with protocols for the dental practice, agreed upon by experts in the field. The Consensus Statement has been formulated according to the AGREE Reporting checklist for the formulation of guidelines. Conclusion The experts and panelists reached a Consensus on the protocols and guidelines for the safe clinical and institutional dental practice.

Being well prepared for a competitive business environment is crucial for future dentists. The aims of this study were to assess dental students' satisfaction with their practice management education, their current and future interest in business-related education and attending a DDS/DMD-MBA program, and the relationship between their demographic and other characteristics and their business education-related responses. The study, conducted in 2016 and 2017, surveyed students in all four years at the authors' home school and at other schools that did not have a DDS/DMD-MBA program. At the home school, 273 students responded (response rate 63%); and 341 students from 11 of the 51 U.S. dental schools without a DDS/DMD-MBA program responded (respondents were from 21% of schools invited; the response rate of those students could not be calculated). The responding students disagreed that their school adequately prepared them for the business aspects of dentistry (mean=2.42 on a scale from 1=disagree strongly to 5=agree strongly). Large majorities agreed/strongly agreed that dentistry is a career that requires a certain amount of business acumen (95%) and that they were very interested in learning about business (85%). A total of 68% agreed/strongly agreed that their school should offer a dual DDS/DMD-MBA degree and 63% that they would consider enrolling in such a program. The more advanced the respondents were, the less satisfied they were with their practice management education (r=-0.20; p0.001). Female respondents were less interested in business-related education (r=-0.20; p0.001) and less likely to consider a DDS/DMD-MBA program than the males. Respondents planning to own a dental practice were more interested in additional current business education (r=0.22; p0.001) and in future business education (r=0.15; p0.001) than those without that plan. These results showed that a significant percentage of these dental students were interested in a DDS/DMD-MBA program. The male students and students who planned to own a practice were more interested in business education than the female students and students who did not plan to own their own practice.

Dentists are healthcare professionals who are at high risk of infection and transmission of the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). The primary objective of the present study was to evaluate the changes in clinical practice made by Brazilian dentists during the COVID-19 pandemic. From June 22 to July 13, 2020, an online questionnaire was sent to dentists using Google Forms. After providing consent, 1,178 dentists answered questions regarding their knowledge and clinical experiences related to COVID-19. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher’s exact, or Kruskal–Wallis tests, with a significance level of 5%. Brazilian dentists significantly changed their routine dental practices. Biosafety measures were added in their offices by 98% of the dentists, increasing operating costs for 88.3% of dentists. Greater discomfort due to the increase in personal protection equipment (PPE) worn during the pandemic was reported by 58.6%. Furthermore, 84.2% reduced heir hours of service. It was found that the dentists decreased their workload, used additional PPE, and took additional biosafety measures.

With the onset of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the dental treatment of patients at risk of infection has become quite challenging. In view of this, patients with head and neck cancer may present with oral complications due to anticancer therapy, making dental assistance necessary. Thus, the objective of the study was to review the literature and critically discuss important concerns about the treatment of patients with head and neck cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic. Because dental professionals are in close contact with the main viral transmission routes, this study presents recommendations for management and protection during clinical dental care. The main characteristics and transmission routes of COVID-19 are also discussed. Dental professionals should control pain and the side effects of antineoplastic treatment and use preventive measures for infection control. During this pandemic, patients with head and neck cancer should not undergo elective procedures, even if they do not have symptoms or a history of COVID-19; therefore, in asymptomatic or painless cases, only preventive actions are recommended. In symptomatic or painful cases, precautions for safe interventional treatments must be implemented by following the hygiene measures recommended by health agencies and using personal protective equipment. During health crises, new protocols emerge for cancer treatment, and professionals must act with greater attention toward biosafety and updated knowledge. It is important to offer adequate individualized treatment based on the recommendations of preventative and interventional treatments so that patients can face this difficult period with optimized quality of life.

The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China, and the etiological agent of Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19). This infection spreads mainly through direct contact with Fl&uuml, gge micro droplets or core droplets that remain suspended as aerosol. Moreover, it has been reported that infected subjects, both with and without clinical signs of COVID-19, can transmit the virus. Since the infection typically enters through mouth, nose, and eyes, dentistry is one of the medical practices at highest risk of infection due to the frequent production of aerosol and the constant presence of saliva. The World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested that only emergency/urgent procedures should be performed during the coronavirus outbreak. Considering the virus&rsquo, route of transmission, a specific protocol should be applied to reduce the risk of infection in addition to measures that prevent the spread of infection from a patient to another person or medical tools and equipment (cross-infection). This protocol should be implemented by modifying both patient management and clinical practice, introducing particular devices and organizational practices. This paper aims to discuss and suggest the most appropriate procedures in every aspect of dental practice to reduce infection risk.

The management of medical emergencies is widely considered a requisite skill for all dentists. Timely intervention of an emergency can significantly alter the outcome for a patient's morbidity and possible mortality. This scoping review examines the prevalence of medical emergences in dental practice, as well as dentists’ attitude, confidence, and competence, of medical emergency management within a dental setting. Key findings include a lack of preparedness towards medical emergencies, despite a universal recognition of the importance and desire to improve key medical skills. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Introduction The share of the dental market held by corporate bodies continues to increase. With the profession currently facing many challenges it is important to understand their place in the profession and their effect.Aim This exploratory study aims to provide an insight into dental associates in relation to their working environment. Specifically, the differences between working in corporate and non-corporate environments in England.Materials and methods Secondary analysis of a self-report questionnaire examining demographics, pay, working conditions, job satisfaction and morale using a combination of closed and open-ended responses sent to randomly selected associate dentists who are BDA members. Responses from associates working in England solely in either the corporate or non-corporate sector were analysed.Results Significant differences were seen between associates working in corporate practice when compared to those in non-corporates practice, for example, significantly less corporate associates were female and corporate associates reported relatively lower levels of autonomy and control.Discussion The differences seen between sectors could be related to rationalisation and should this be the reality it could have far reaching effects on the profession and its ability to manage itself.Conclusion This study highlights some differences between the corporate and non-corporate dental sectors. Further work is needed to build a deeper understanding of the sector.

Dental bodies corporate are not a new phenomenon with companies having practised dentistry in the UK for over a hundred years. At the turn of the twentieth century, unregistered practice was common with dental companies resulting in extensive malpractice. Corporate dentistry introduced commercial interests into the profession and brought further dangers such as treatment not being patient-centred. The British Dental Association (BDA) was among those who continuously worked to mitigate these effects. Increasingly strict measures were introduced by governments to protect the public from harm from corporate practice with the government eventually remedying concerns, in the 1950s, by restricting corporate practice. In 2006 this restriction was lifted, with the support of the BDA, in an effort to increase competition and choice and open up the market to new providers. While the profession continues to develop, concerns remain. Some are long held with others, such as a negative effect on working conditions and UDA values, being relatively recent developments.

In a digital orientating survey of gender differences among 156 male and 98 female dentists in the Netherlands, many similarities were found between the two groups. Men and women generally report that they are in good health, experience comparable levels of burnout (about 10%) and are equally satisfied with their choice of profession. To a large extent, they perceive the same aspects of their work as attractive, with 'patient care' as by far the most attractive feature. According to the dentists as well as 122 assistants and dental hygienists (who were also questioned in this survey), they have comparable leadership styles, while the dentists, on average, rate their leadership behaviour more highly than the assistants and dental hygienists do. In addition, a limited number of significant gender differences were found in the sample. Women feel less competent in conducting complex interventions than men, and they find surgical interventions and complex restorative treatments less attractive aspects of their work. Women consult colleagues more often and their preference for working in a team is greater.In een verkennend onderzoek, door middel van digitale enquête, naar sekseverschillen onder 156 mannelijke en 98 vrouwelijke tandartsen in Nederland werden veel overeenkomsten tussen beide groepen gevonden. Mannen en vrouwen rapporteerden over het algemeen een goede gezondheid, gelijke percentages voor burn-out (circa 10%) en tevredenheid met hun beroepskeuze. Voor een groot deel ervaarden ze dezelfde onderdelen van hun werk als aantrekkelijk, waarbij de omgang met patiënten verreweg het hoogste scoorde. Ook gaven zij, zowel volgens zichzelf als volgens 122 assistenten en mondhygiënisten (die hierop in dit onderzoek ook werden bevraagd), op een vergelijkbare manier leiding en schatten hun leiderschapsgedrag gemiddeld hoger in dan assistenten en mondhygiënisten deden. Daarnaast was er een beperkt aantal binnen de steekproef significante sekseverschillen gevonden. Vrouwen voelden zich minder competent bij complexe ingrepen dan mannen en vonden chirurgische ingrepen en complexe restauratieve behandelingen minder aantrekkelijk. Zij consulteerden vaker collega’s en hun voorkeur voor werken in teamverband was groter.
