This handbook follows the systematic approach outlined by the European standard EN 16883:2017 Guidelines for improving the energy performance of historic buildings. It describes how the standard can be applied in practice with chapters on heritage value assessment, building survey and holistic assessment of energy efficiency measures. The book draws on the experience from a team of international leading experts in the field of energy efficiency in historic buildings.The intended audience for the handbook is professionals working with the refurbishment of existing buildings: architects, engineers, heritage consultants, building surveyors and professional property owners. It points at the possibilities to lower the energy use in existing buildings without compromising their heritage values, and provides practical guidance on how to identify, assess and select energy retrofit measures through a multidisciplinary planning process.Throughout the book you will follow case studies that illustrate how the different stages of the planning process can be carried out in practice. Lo scenario normativo internazionale conferma il diritto di accesso alla cultura quale risorsa per la produzione di benefici, non tanto economici, ma di sviluppo sociale: in tal senso, il patrimonio “contiene” interessi e valori che determinano una responsabilità collettiva di conservazione. Nonostante partecipazione e coinvolgimento siano condizioni imprescindibili, tali valori restano solo potenziali perché non pienamente percepiti. Attraverso l’illustrazione dell’esperienza in corso sull’Isola Comacina, il contributo propone di considerare i contenuti del restauro come letture alternative per una comunicazione capace di ricostruire un rapporto tra persone e cose perché, a cavaliere tra scienze umanistiche e scienze esatte, si indaga la vita dei luoghi scoprendo la consistenza fisica degli oggetti e la conseguente continua esigenza di cura, che rimandano ad esperienze quotidiane capaci di descrivere profondamente la dimensione vitale del patrimonio culturale. The international regulatory framework confirms the right of access to culture as a resource for the production of benefits, not just economic, but linked to social development: in this sense, heritage “contains” interests and values that determine a collective responsibility in conservation. Although participation and involvement are essential conditions, these values remain only potential because not fully perceived. Detailed three-dimensional reconstruction of heritage objects is crucial for different purposes, such as analysis, preservation and maintenance, among others. Geomatics techniques allow acquiring complex and comprehensive information about geometry and current conditions of the surveyed objects in a short time, which is a great advantage for documentation and historical archives. The reconstruction of three-dimensional models is often performed using either image-based techniques, mainly Close Range Photogrammetry (CRP), including Structure from Motion approaches (SfM), or range-based techniques, such as Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS). These approaches have been widely applied in the field of Cultural Heritage to support multidisciplinary studies, from simple documentation to the monitoring of historical buildings, in restoration works or for structural analysis checks. The present paper aims at exploring the potential contribution of Geomatics to Structural Engineering, by investigating capabilities and advantages of TLS for a vertical structure. The experiments presented herein were carried out in a notable case study, the San Luzi church, located in Zuoz (Switzerland) in the Upper Engadin. Its bell tower is about 60 m high and is equipped with four bells.
