The objective of this study is to present a surgical approach to reactive lesions for rehabilitation purposes in an elderly patient. A 63-year-old male patient presented to the dental clinic of a higher education institution reporting swelling in the inner/upper part of his mouth, as well as aesthetic dissatisfaction when smiling. During the medical history, he reported that he had used the prosthesis for approximately 5 months but stopped using it continuously due to severe pain in the areas corresponding to the "edges" of the prosthesis, but he did use it while chewing. On intraoral examination, lesions with a hyperplastic appearance could be highlighted in the fundus of the vestibule of the upper arch bilaterally. Based on the clinical characteristics presented, it was decided with the patient to remove the lesions surgically, followed by referral for prosthetic rehabilitation. The fragments were removed and sent for confirmation of the condition, confirming the hypothesis of reactive fibroepithelial hyperplasia. The patient was then referred for prosthetic rehabilitation. Surgical approach for conditioning of gingival tissue prior to rehabilitation treatment is, therefore, a viable option with a good prognosis when it comes to a reactive lesion, making the environment suitable for the installation of removable prostheses.

The search for an aesthetically attractive smile has been a striking feature in contemporary society, driving modern Dentistry to constantly develop materials and techniques for oral rehabilitation from a perspective of form, function, and aesthetics. Porcelain, as a dental material with excellent properties as translucency, fluorescence, chemical stability, coefficient of linear thermal expansion and biological compatibility, which justifies its preference. In this context, the application of ceramic laminates has often been recognized as a prominent choice, allowing results that harmonize color and shape, providing an aesthetically pleasing smile. Its application must comply with scientific precepts, with the correct prescription and application of the technique, meeting the specific needs of the patient. The objective of this article is to report a detailed clinical case of aesthetic and functional rehabilitation of the maxillary arch using porcelain veneers and crowns in fixed prostheses. The study aims to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of these restorations, in addition to their indications as a treatment option for esthetic rehabilitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To conduct a systematic review with meta-analysis (PROSPERO: CRD42022313303) to analyze studies that evaluated techniques used to obtain impressions in single cases and dental partial fixed, using the intraoral scanning system (intervention) compared to the conventional molding system for prostheses (comparison). Methods: The PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Collaboration, Web of Science and SciELO databases were analyzed using the keywords: "Dental Impression Technique"; "Computer - Aided Design"; "Dental, Partial, Fixed" and "Digital Workflow". The final sample consisted of 13 studies selected for data synthesis. The collected data were tabulated and organized qualitatively and quantitatively using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software®. The level of significance considered was p<0.05. Results: The main results indicated there was no significant difference between digital and conventional flow for the items: marginal adaptation of the dental prosthesis, choice of method by the professional, patient's decision, and clinical execution time, p>0.05. However, the digital flow showed a significant reduction in laboratory time. Conclusion: Given the data, the digital scanning method is feasible for making single and multiple fixed prostheses compared to the conventional method, with the benefit of reducing laboratory time for its execution. More clinical studies are necessary to evaluate both methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated the dental prosthesis needs and associated factors in indigenous Brazilian adults from Northeastern Brazil. Dental prosthesis needs were assessed in a representative sample of 225 Indians. Edentulous area and current indication for tooth extraction according to periodontal status or non-restorable condition were registered in a clinical chart. Bivariate and logistic analyses were applied to assess associations of dental prosthesis needs and prosthesis type with age, sex, income, education, smoking, moderate or severe periodontitis, plaque index, dental caries experience, and previous dental visit. Prosthetic treatment was necessary in 83% of the participants. These individuals required 339 dental prostheses, including removable partial dentures (60.2%), fixed (33.6%), and complete dentures (6.2%). Regression analysis showed that age =35 years [odds ratio (OR) 5.95, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.97-17.91, p=0.002] and caries experience =3 [OR 4.01, 95%CI 1.78-9.02, p=0.001] were significantly associated with prosthesis needs. The type of prosthesis required was associated with sex, age, educational level, periodontitis, caries experience, and plaque index (p=0.03). In conclusion, the need for prosthetic rehabilitation was high in this population, and sociodemographic factors, dental plaque level, caries experience, and periodontitis were associated with the required type of prosthesis. These data can be used to plan the allocation of resources to promote preventive and curative strategies in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ELITE (Social sciences) , *SIXTEENTH century , *SOCIAL history , *SEVENTEENTH century , *SOCIAL factors - Abstract
Two rare 17th century human prostheses were found during archaeological excavations in Lisbon, one of them exhumed from an inhumation grave in Carmo Church and the other from a well, reused as cesspit, in the Santana Convent. The first corresponds to a thumb distal part, made in silver and the other to four teeth (upper incisors), and produced in ivory, probably from elephant. Since early times most human societies gave huge importance to its members' body aesthetics and bodily conditions. However, those aspects, resulting mainly from economic and social factors, perhaps even religious, would be exacerbated, especially among the political, military and religious elites, from the 16th century onwards, where it was intended to identify the look of each person with their social and material condition. COMPLETE dentures , *OLDER people , *SYMPTOMS , *DOPAMINERGIC neurons , *LIFE expectancy - Abstract
With the increase in life expectancy, the elderly population has substantially increased. It is estimated that this growth will reach an average of 81.04 years by 2060. Such an aging process contributes to the emergence of diseases. Brazil is the sixth country in the world ranking that constitutes the oldest population and has a high prevalence of chronic diseases. In the country, there are 300 million people with Parkinson’s disease (PD), a neurodegenerative pathology, which due to the loss of dopaminergic neurons, motor, and non-motor symptoms compromises the quality of life of people with this condition. The signs and symptoms of PD compromise motor movements, and these individuals are unable to perform adequate oral hygiene, which favors edentulism because of their susceptibility to periodontal diseases and dental caries. Thus, this case report aims to explain the clinical steps involved during rehabilitation, maxillary and mandibular complete denture in a patient with Parkinson ’s disease and dementia, demonstrating that despite the difficulty during management, the fabrication technique did not differ from that used in a healthy patient. The prosthetic rehabilitation treatment restored the masticatory and esthetic functions, which favored social reintegration and contributed to the improvement in the patient’s quality of life. However, treating patients with PD presents challenges, and not all dentists are prepared to manage this condition. In the inherent limitations during the clinical stages, complete dentures resulted in greater benefits for oral and general health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PARTIAL dentures , *ECTODERMAL dysplasia , *DENTURES , *TEETH , *PROSTHETICS , *REMOVABLE partial dentures - Abstract
Ectodermal dysplasia is a group of hereditary syndromes that presents defects in the development of one or more tissues of ectodermal origin. This study aimed to describe an oral rehabilitation of a patient with ectodermal dysplasia. Performed with fixed and removable prostheses, it returned the function and aesthetics, raising his self-esteem. Patient went for outpatient treatment at the Hospital for Craniofacial Anomalies in the dental prosthesis sector, complaining of esthetics and impaired masticatory function. On intraoral examination, numerous tooth absences were observed due to agenesis and malformation in the few remaining teeth (teeth region 13, 11, 21 23). After the clinical and radiographic examination, the treatment included the manufacture of total crowns milled in elements 11, 13, 21, and 23 (06 elements), with bilateral fittings in the canine region to receive a removable partial denture (class I of Kennedy), placing teeth on the free ends due to the impossibility of installing implants. In the lower arch, the only teeth the patient had were the canines 33 and 43, with the aggravating factor that they were rotated and malformed. A fixed canine-to-canine denture and a removable partial denture for the posterior region were made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: By the use of complete or partial dental prosthesis, function, esthetics, and phonetics are reestablished. Few population-based studies are available in the literature using an older adult population. Objective: Evaluate the use of and need for dental prostheses and their associated factors. Method: This study included a random sample of 287 elderly, in the city of Cruz Alta, Brazil. Use of and need for dental prostheses were the main outcomes, and two analytical models were constructed. Subgroup analyses were performed for individuals using fixed partial denture (FPD) and removable (partial and/ or complete) dental prosthesis (RDP). Results: Use of and need for dental prosthesis were identified in 83.6% (n=240) and 42.5% (n=122) of the elderly, respectively. Women presented a significantly higher prevalence ratio (PR) for use of dental prostheses (PR=1.15; 95%IC:1.02–1.28) and lower need (PR=0.70; 95%IC:0.54–0.91). No statistically significant difference was demonstrated for the use of FPD regarding the sex. Higher education level was associated with lower use of prostheses (PR=0.73; 95%IC:0.58–0.91) when compared to lower level of education. Medium level of education showed a significantly lower need for dental prostheses (PR=0.61 – 95%IC:0.39–0.94). Those that did not consume alcohol presented with a significantly lower use of FPD and RDP (PR=0.46; 95%IC:0.23–0.93 and 0.90;0.81–0.99, respectively). Conclusion: The use of and need for dental prostheses were associated with sex, level of education, and behavioral factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study aimed to conduct a narrative literature review on the importance and influence of the ferrule effect on the fracture resistance of restorations in endodontically treated teeth with or without the use of intraradicular posts. Methodology: The following descriptors indexed in the DeCS (Health Sciences Descriptors) were used: "Ferrule", Dental Prosthesis", "Dental Restoration Failure", "Post and Core Technique", and "Dental Posts", to search on the databases of PubMed, Embase, Lilacs, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library data. Results: Data from most of the in vitro or in vivo studies included in this review suggest the use of the ferrule to increase fracture resistance and longevity of endodontically treated teeth. It has been recommended to make a ferrule with a uniform height of 2 mm and a thickness greater than 1.5 mm. Conclusion: The use of intraradicular posts was indicated by most studies, and fiberglass posts are generally recommended instead of cast metal cores to minimize the risk of root fracture due to the modulus of elasticity similar to dentin, in addition to the possibility of retreatments in adhesive failure cases. Despite this, clinical studies with a long-term follow-up are essential to evaluating the longevity of restorations of endodontically treated teeth using fiberglass posts without or with the presence of ferrule in different thicknesses and heights. In the oral cavity are several species of microorganisms, some commensals and others that in certain occasions can be pathogenic. Among the most common microorganisms for infections of the oral cavity the fungus of the genus Candida spp. are the most frequent causing a fungal infection known as candidosis. Sampling was done by collecting swab material from the oral cavity of 45 patients with total and / or removable partial dentures, attended at the UNIPLAC Dentistry Clinic and long - term elderly in the city of Lages, Santa Catarina. The study was carried out between September and November 2017. Oral cavity samples were collected with sterile swab and seeded in CHROMagar (CHROMagar, Microbiology, Paris-France) chromogenic medium and incubated at 37°C for 48 hours and colonies identified of Candida spp. through the standard staining characteristics for each species. The positivity for Candida spp. in the oral cavity was 68.89% (31/45), 61,30% were for females and 38,70% for males. The average age of the patients was 65 years. Four yeast species were isolated from the cultivated samples: 54.84% of C. albicans, 6.45% of C. krusei, 3.22% C. tropicalis, only pure samples and 16.12% for C. albicans and C. krusei, 12.90% C. albicans and C. glabrata and 3.23% for C. albicans and C. tropicalis as well as for C. albicans, C. krusei and C. glabrata. The presence of lesions was not frequently mentioned by the patients, and only 4.44% complained of edema or pain and discomfort in the oral cavity. The need for more effective dental monitoring in order to guide patients in a preventive way about the importance of good hygiene and the time of use of the prostheses, since they present conditions of vulnerability to C. albicans infections that can lead to pathological conditions of candidosis. A wide variety of dental ceramics is launched every year. Therefore, clinicians should constantly study and update themselves to correctly indicate these materials. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the association of dentists' academic aspects with their knowledge and the indication of dental ceramics for metal-free restorations. All the dentists from private clinics who affirmed to perform prosthetic treatments on their patients in a Southern Brazilian city were personally invited to this research to avoid dropouts. Participants answered questions related to their knowledge of different dental materials, their information sources and usage frequency of ceramic materials, and related to their academic training/education. Chi-square tests were performed to evaluate the association among the outcomes (knowledge of different materials, information sources considered for material selection and their frequencies of use) and exposure variables (time since graduation and post-graduation degree). Significant associations were also submitted to Chi-square residual analysis. A response rate of 73.3% was reached. The most known and used materials were Y-TZP and porcelain veneered zirconia, respectively, whereas the least known was leucite-based ceramic. The majority of the professionals with at least 25 years since graduation claimed not to know lithium disilicate or leucite-based ceramics, and a significant number of these professionals allow the laboratory prostheses technician to choose the restorative material. In addition, most of dentists with no post-graduation said they did not have knowledge about leucite and lithium disilicate. It was evidenced that continuing education plays an important role in the dentists' attitudes regarding ceramic materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Objective Metal-ceramic prosthesis are the treatment of choice in oral rehabilitation because of their high survival rates. However, there are few reports in the scientific literature about factors that lead to fractures of metal-ceramic prostheses. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether prostheses units number, abutment type and number, type of the prostheses, prostheses position in the mouth, bruxism and occlusal plaque influence the incidence of fractures in fixed metal-ceramic prostheses. Methods For this study, 16 patients were selected, totaling 74 metal-ceramic prostheses installed between 2000-2010, with follow up of at least four years. Besides dental history, other information was collected, such as patients’ gender and age, prostheses installation date, and the ceramic system used. In case of prostheses fracture, a questionnaire was applied to identify signs of bruxism. A clinical evaluation was done to evaluate the prostheses integrity and opposing dentition characteristics. Success, failure and survival rates were determined. Results The results showed that the success rate of metal-ceramic prostheses was 87.8% and the survival rate was 89.1%. In addition, the success rate was independent of patient age, prostheses installation time, number of prosthesis, number of prosthesis’ units and abutments. The qualitative variables also did not show significant statistical results between success and failure rates. Conclusion It was concluded that metal-ceramic prostheses have high success and survival rates, what guarantees longevity and indication of this type of prostheses in daily practice.

Self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) are cementing agents and have the objective of simplifying adhesive cementation, with a simplified use protocol. The aim of this article was to review the literature on SARCs with a focus on the advantages of their use, highlighting their adhesion and biocompatibility mechanism. Thus, the Health Sciences Descriptors "Self-Adhesive Resin Cement", "Dental Cements", "Adhesion" and "Dental Prosthesis" were used, as well as their Portuguese counterparts in the online databases SciELO, PubMed and Bireme in the period of time between the years 2000 to 2020. According to the studies, SARCs have excellent physical and mechanical properties, which include low solubility in the oral environment, adhesion to the dental substrate and the prosthetic part, color mimicry, biocompatibility and fluoride release, in addition to being applied in a single step, optimizing the operator's working time. In addition, self-adhesive cements seem to offer a promising new approach in indirect restorative procedures, which may present a performance similar to conventional ones, however more studies are needed to support their long-term applicability. This study aims to investigate the extent to which the use of dental prosthesis influences the nutritional intake of the elderly, and to understand the sociodemographic indicators that condition the demand for dental treatment, as well as the use and type of dental prosthesis. Methodologically we proceeded to a cognitive evaluation, a questionnaire identifying the elderly, application of the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index tool and a food anamnesis were carried out in a sample of 400 elderly people from three Portuguese districts. There was a correlation (p=0.006) between the level of schooling and the periodicity of dental visits, as well as an association between gender and use of dental prosthesis (p=0.000), between prosthesis use and schooling level (p = 0.007) and between the type of dental prosthesis and yield (p<0.05). Statistically significant differences were observed in the daily intake of iron (p = 0.014) and phosphor (p = 0.042) in individuals with and without dental prosthesis, and differences in the daily intake of total protein, vitamin A, carotenes, α- tocopherol and magnesium (p<0.05) when compared to different types of dental prostheses. It is concluded that the level of education and gender condition the demand for dental treatment. The use of prosthesis affects the daily nutritional supply of iron and phosphorus. - Abstract
In oral rehabilitation, the technological innovations are imports that came from engineering, physics and chemistry and were adapted to Dentistry. It is up to the prosthodontics specialists to reestablish the patient's oral function, and improve health and aesthetics. But in order to fulfill these requirements, technological support is necessary, among them we can highlight 3D printing. This study aims to review within literature, the main additive manufacturing technologies used in dentistry, as well as their applicability in oral rehabilitation. The methodological approach employed consisted of research carried out on search engines such as PubMed and Google Scholar. The online databases were employed in order to find works published in Portuguese and English from 2010 to 2020. Through this study we can conclude that additive manufacturing technologies are a reality within dental practice. 3D printing has enabled the making printed casts for diagnostic purposes or definitive casts, implant drill guides, castable patterns, custom impression trays and occlusal splints in an agile and completely digital way, consequently reducing the possibility of human error.

For a long time, dental surgeons have sought a definitive solution to the functional and aesthetic problems of edentulous patients. Several dental implant systems were developed over the years, each one with its advantages. But when the different systems are compared biologically, the maintenance of peri-implant tissues is superior in the Morse taper implant when compared with the Internal Hexagon and External Hexagon (EH) systems. The objective of this paper is to analyze the mechanical behavior of different dental implant systems. For this bibliographic search it was employed an indirect documentation technique, where it used secondary sources of information. Many studies followed the different implant systems for up to 15 years, finding several mechanical flaws in implants, abutments and prosthetic screws. One of the first studies with dental implants followed 1997 implants for 15 years, which the authors found fractures, at different levels, of 3.5% of the implants, the majority occurred after 5 years of follow-up, possibly due to marginal bone loss. To limit the mechanical failures found in EH implants, the researchers tested other connection systems to use in dental implants. In this study, is possible to conclude that the ideal is that the implant and the prosthesis are designed in such a way that there is a distribution of loads in the bone tissue, that can be achieved through of an adequate three-dimensional adjustment of the implant.
