- Abstract
5-ALA is a precursor substance of tetrapyrrole biomolecule synthase, which is involved in the synthesis of porphyrins and is closely related to the synthesis of heme and the absorption and utilization of iron in animals, and has the effect of improving the antioxidant capacity of cells and the immune function of body. 5-ALA is involved in synthesis of chlorophyll in plants, which can affect the photosensitive biosynthesis system and enhance fruit coloring. 5-ALA is a precursor to the production of the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), which can be produced by heme biosynthesis and is used clinically as a photosensitizer for light detection and cancer photodynamic therapy (PDT). In the paper, the biological function of 5-ALA and its application in animals are reviewed, in order to provide reference for the further application of 5-ALA in livestock and poultry breeding.
