The transport properties of iron under Earth's inner core conditions are essential input for the geophysical modelling but are poorly constrained experimentally. Here we show that the thermal and electrical conductivity of iron at those conditions remains high even if the electron-electron-scattering (EES) is properly taken into account. This result is obtained by ab initio simulations taking into account consistently both thermal disorder and electronic correlations. Thermal disorder suppresses the non-Fermi-liquid behavior of the body-centered cubic iron phase, hence, reducing the EES; the total calculated thermal conductivity of this phase is 220 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ with the EES reduction not exceeding 20%. The EES and electron-lattice scattering are intertwined resulting in breaking of the Matthiessen's rule with increasing EES. In the hexagonal close-packed iron the EES is also not increased by thermal disorder and remains weak. We have used diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) simulations to calculate the energy barrier for H$_2$ dissociation on the Mg(0001) surface. The calculations employ pseudopotentials and systematically improvable B-spline basis sets to expand the single particle orbitals used to construct the trial wavefunctions. Extensive tests on system size, time step, and other sources of errors, performed on periodically repeated systems of up to 550 atoms, show that all these errors together can be reduced to $\sim 0.03$ eV. The DMC dissociation barrier is calculated to be $1.18 \pm 0.03$ eV, and is compared to those obtained with density functional theory using various exchange-correlation functionals, with values ranging between 0.44 and 1.07 eV., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Physical Review B

We present the results of a photometric BVI survey of 0.9 square degrees around the Wolf-Rayet binary gamma^2 Vel and its early-type companion gamma^1 Vel. Several hundred PMS stars are identified and the youth of a subset of these is confirmed by the presence of lithium, H-alpha emission and X-ray activity. We show that the PMS stars are kinematically coherent and spatially concentrated around gamma Vel. The PMS stars have similar proper motions to gamma Vel, to main-sequence stars around gammaVel and to early-type stars of the wider Vela OB2 association of which gamma^2 Vel is the brightest member. The ratio of main-sequence stars to low-mass (0.1-0.6 Msun) PMS stars is consistent with a Kroupa mass function. Main-sequence fitting to stars around gamma Vel gives a distance modulus of 7.76+/-0.07 mag, consistent with a similarly-determined distance for Vela OB2 and with interferometric distances to gamma^2 Vel. High-mass stellar models indicate an age of 3-4 Myr for gamma^2 Vel, but the low-mass PMS stars have ages of ~10 Myr according to low-mass evolutionary models and 5-10 Myr by empirically placing them in an age sequence with other clusters based on colour-magnitude diagrams and lithium depletion. We conclude that the low-mass PMS stars form a genuine association with gamma Vel and that this is a subcluster within the larger Vela OB2 association. We speculate that gamma^2 Vel formed after the low-mass stars, expelling gas, terminating star formation and unbinding the association. The velocity dispersion of the PMS stars is too low for this star forming event to have produced all the stars in Vela OB2. Instead, star formation must have started at several sites within a molecular cloud, either sequentially or, simultaneously after some triggering event [abridged]., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have used diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations to study the structural properties of magnesium hydride (MgH$_2$), including the pressure-volume equation of state, the cohesive energy and the enthalpy of formation from magnesium bulk and hydrogen gas. The calculations employ pseudopotentials and B-spline basis sets to expand the single particle orbitals used to construct the trial wavefunctions. Extensive tests on system size, time step, and other sources of errors, performed on periodically repeated systems of up to 1050 atoms, show that all these errors together can be reduced to below 10 meV per formula unit. We find excellent agreement with the experiments for the equilibrium volume of both the Mg and the MgH$_2$ crystals. The cohesive energy of the Mg crystal is found to be 1.51(1) eV, and agrees perfectly with the experimental value of 1.51 eV. The enthalpy of formation of MgH$_2$ from Mg bulk and H$_2$ gas is found to be $0.85 \pm 0.01$ eV/formula unit, or $82 \pm 1$ kJ/mole, which is off the experimental one of $76.1 \pm 1$ kJ/mole only by 6 kJ/mole. This shows that DMC can almost achieve chemical accuracy (1 kcal/mole) on this system. It is well known, both theoretically and experimentally, that alloying MgH$_2$ with transition elements can significantly improve the thermodynamic and kinetic properties for H$_2$ desorption, as well as the H$_2$ intake by Mg bulk. Here we present a density functional theory investigation of hydrogen dissociation and surface diffusion over Ni-doped surface, and compare the findings to previously investigated Ti-doped Mg(0001) and pure Mg(0001) surfaces. Our results show that the energy barrier for hydrogen dissociation on the pure Mg(0001) surface is high, while it is small/null when Ni/Ti are added to the surface as dopants. We find that the binding energy of the two H atoms near the dissociation site is high on Ti, effectively impeding diffusion away from the Ti site. By contrast, we find that on Ni the energy barrier for diffusion is much reduced. Therefore, although both Ti and Ni promote H$_2$ dissociation, only Ni appears to be a good catalyst for Mg hydrogenation, allowing diffusion away from the catalytic sites. We present a new, detailed analysis of late-time mid-infrared (IR) observations of the Type II-P supernova (SN) 2003gd. At about 16 months after the explosion, the mid-IR flux is consistent with emission from 4 x 10^(-5) M(solar) of newly condensed dust in the ejecta. At 22 months emission from point-like sources close to the SN position was detected at 8 microns and 24 microns. By 42 months the 24 micron flux had faded. Considerations of luminosity and source size rule out the ejecta of SN 2003gd as the main origin of the emission at 22 months. A possible alternative explanation for the emission at this later epoch is an IR echo from pre-existing circumstellar or interstellar dust. We conclude that, contrary to the claim of Sugerman et al. (2006, Science, 313, 196), the mid-IR emission from SN 2003gd does not support the presence of 0.02 M(solar) of newly formed dust in the ejecta. We present late-time (590-994 d) mid-IR photometry of the normal, but highly-reddened Type IIP supernova SN 2002hh. Bright, cool, slowly-fading emission is detected from the direction of the supernova. Most of this flux appears not to be driven by the supernova event but instead probably originates in a cool, obscured star-formation region or molecular cloud along the line-of-sight. We also show, however, that the declining component of the flux is consistent with an SN-powered IR echo from a dusty progenitor CSM. Mid-IR emission could also be coming from newly-condensed dust and/or an ejecta/CSM impact but their contributions are likely to be small. For the case of a CSM-IR echo, we infer a dust mass of as little as 0.036 M(solar) with a corresponding CSM mass of 3.6(0.01/r(dg))M(solar) where r(dg) is the dust-to-gas mass ratio. Such a CSM would have resulted from episodic mass loss whose rate declined significantly about 28,000 years ago. Alternatively, an IR echo from a surrounding, dense, dusty molecular cloud might also have been responsible for the fading component. Either way, this is the first time that an IR echo has been clearly identified in a Type IIP supernova. We find no evidence for or against the proposal that Type IIP supernovae produce large amounts of dust via grain condensation in the ejecta. However, within the CSM-IR echo scenario, the mass of dust derived implies that the progenitors of the most common of core-collapse supernovae may make an important contribution to the universal dust content., Comment: 41 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal (References corrected)

We present optical and infrared (IR) observations of the type IIP SN2002hh from 3 to 397 days after explosion. The optical spectroscopic (4-397d) and photometric (3-278d) data are complemented by spectroscopic (137-381d) and photometric (137-314d) data acquired at IR wavelengths. This is the first time L-band spectra have ever been successfully obtained for a supernova at a distance beyond the Local Group. The VRI light curves in the first 40 days reveal SN2002hh to be a SN IIP (plateau) - the most common of all core-collapse supernovae. SN2002hh is one of the most highly extinguished supernovae ever investigated. To provide a good match between its early-time spectrum and a coeval spectrum of the Type IIP SN1999em, as well as maintaining consistency with KI interstellar absorption, we invoke a 2-component extinction model. One component is due to the combined effect of the interstellar medium of our Milky Way Galaxy and the SN host galaxy, while the other component is due to a "dust pocket" where the grains have a mean size smaller than in the interstellar medium. The early-time optical light curves of SNe 1999em and 2002hh are generally well-matched, as are the radioactive tails of these two SNe and SN1987A. The late-time similarity of the SN2002hh optical light curves to those of SN1987A, together with measurements of the optical/IR luminosity and [FeII] 1.257mu emission indicate that 0.07 +- 0.02 Msun of Ni 56 was ejected by SN2002hh. We present late-time near-infrared (NIR) and optical observations of the type IIn SN 1998S. The NIR photometry spans 333-1242 days after explosion, while the NIR and optical spectra cover 333-1191 days and 305-1093 days respectively. The NIR photometry extends to the M'-band (4.7 mu), making SN 1998S only the second ever supernova for which such a long IR wavelength has been detected. The shape and evolution of the H alpha and HeI 1.083 mu line profiles indicate a powerful interaction with a progenitor wind, as well as providing evidence of dust condensation within the ejecta. The latest optical spectrum suggests that the wind had been flowing for at least 430 years. The intensity and rise of the HK continuum towards longer wavelengths together with the relatively bright L' and M' magnitudes shows that the NIR emission was due to hot dust newly-formed in supernovae may provide the ejecta and/or pre-existing dust in the progenitor circumstellar medium (CSM). [ABRIDGED] Possible origins for the NIR emission are considered. Significant radioactive heating of ejecta dust is ruled out, as is shock/X-ray-precursor heating of CSM dust. More plausible sources are (a) an IR-echo from CSM dust driven by the UV/optical peak luminosity, and (b) emission from newly-condensed dust which formed within a cool, dense shell produced by the ejecta shock/CSM interaction. We argue that the evidence favours the condensing dust hypothesis, although an IR-echo is not ruled out. Within the condensing-dust scenario, the IR luminosity indicates the presence of at least 0.001 solar masses of dust in the ejecta, and probably considerably more. Finally, we show that the late-time intrinsic (K-L') evolution of type II supernovae may provide a useful tool for determining the presence or absence of a massive CSM around their progenitor stars., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, to be published in MNRAS

We report the discovery of low-mass PMS stars in the younger subgroup of the Cepheus OB3 association, Cep OB3b, using {\it UBVI} CCD photometry and spectroscopy. The location of a PMS is well defined in a V versus (V-I) colour-magnitude diagram (CMD). Multi-fibre spectroscopy results of optically-selected PMS candidates confirm the T Tauri nature of 10 objects, with equal numbers of classical and weak-line TTS. There are 6 other objects which we classify as possible PMS stars. The newly discovered TTS have masses in the range 0.9 - 3.0 Msun and ages from <1 to nearly 10 Myr, based on the Siess et al.(2000) isochrones. Their location close to the O and B Their location close to the O and B stars of the association demonstrates that low-mass star formation is possible in this hostile environment dominated by early-type stars and that the latter must have been less effective in eroding the circumstellar discs of their lower mass siblings compared to other OB associations (e.g. lambda Ori). We attribute this to the nature of the local environment, speculating that the bulk of molecular material, which shielded low-mass stars from the ionising radiation of their early-type siblings, has only recently been removed (abridged)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We have developed the techniques required to use the optimal photometry algorithm of Naylor (1998) to create colour-magnitude diagrams with well defined completeness functions. To achieve this we first demonstrate that the optimal extraction is insensitive to uncertainties in the star's measured position. We then show how to correct the optimally extracted fluxes such that they correspond to those measured in a large aperture, so aperture photometry of standard stars can be used to place the measurements on a standard system. The technique simultaneously removes the effects of a position dependent point-spread function. Finally we develop a method called "ghosting", which calculates the completeness corrections in the absence of an accurate description of the point spread function. We apply these techniques to the young cluster NGC 2547 (=C0809-491), and use an X-ray selected sample to find an age of 20-35Myr and an intrinsic distance modulus of 8.00-8.15 magnitudes. We use these isochrones to select members from our photometric surveys. Our derived luminosity function shows a well defined Wielen dip, making NGC 2547 the youngest cluster in which such a feature has been observed. Our derived mass function spans the range 0.1-6Mo and is similar to that for the field and the older, more massive clusters M35 and the Pleiades, supporting the idea of a universal initial mass function., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, MNRAS accepted

We report the serendipitous discovery of a population of low mass, pre-main sequence stars (PMS) in the direction of the Wolf-Rayet/O-star binary system gamma^{2} Vel and the Vela OB2 association. We argue that gamma^{2} Vel and the low mass stars are truly associated, are approximately coeval and that both are at distances between 360-490 pc, disagreeing at the 2 sigma level with the recent Hipparcos parallax of gamma^{2} Vel, but consistent with older distance estimates. Our results clearly have implications for the physical parameters of the gamma^{2} Vel system, but also offer an exciting opportunity to investigate the influence of high mass stars on the mass function and circumstellar disc lifetimes of their lower mass PMS siblings., Comment: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Letters - in press
