The shelf‐slope margin is a geomorphic zone with a change in gradient between subaqueous shelves and slopes, which extends towards the submarine basin‐floor. It is important because it partitions distinct sedimentary and biogenic processes between the shallow and deep‐water realms. The initiation of a shelf‐slope profile from pre‐existing conditions, and the evolution of shelf margins in space and time has been the focus of numerous studies, particularly from seismic data sets on passive margins, although markedly less‐so from active tectonic settings. This study documents the initiation and evolution of a shelf‐slope margin in the well‐studied Eocene Aínsa Basin (Spanish Pyrenees) through the segmentation of a mixed carbonate‐siliciclastic ramp via contractional tectonics and differential subsidence. The basinward propagation of a series of thrusts through the ramp allowed the maintenance of shallow‐water, predominantly carbonate sedimentation on their uplifted hanging wall anticlines. Conversely, the deepened foot wall synclines became muddy slope environments, and their axes became the main loci of siliciclastic turbidity current bypass and deposition. The deflection of turbidity currents around uplifted areas towards the synclinal lows allowed for the continuation of carbonate production at the bathymetric highs, which kept pace with subsidence. The interface between shallow‐ and deep‐water sedimentation (i.e. the shelf‐slope margin) was an erosional and composite submarine scarp surface generated by several phases of large‐scale mass wasting of the aggrading shelf carbonates, and healing by onlap of slope turbidites against the scarp. Continued thrust propagation and basin deepening led to the progressive headward degradation of the surfaces, resulting in an apparent retrogradation of the shelf‐slope margin and onlapping slope deposits. This model for the tectonically controlled conversion of a submarine ramp into a shelf‐slope profile contrasts with conventional models that consider shelf‐slope margins to be inherently progradational after initiation. This study also challenges the notion that large‐scale degradational surfaces and thick successions of submarine landslides are inherently diagnostic of canyons and their fill. Thin, condensed coarse-grained shallow marine successions can be difficult to describe and interpret, especially in the subsurface since the recognition of finer-grained intervals, typically associated with sequence stratigraphic surfaces, is challenging. This lack of mudstones and siltstones means that they also typically make excellent reservoir intervals. The Oxfordian to Volgian intra-Draupne Formation sandstones in the Johan Sverdrup Field, southern Utsira High, represent such a system. This study presents a new sequence stratigraphic model for the Johan Sverdrup Field that unravels the detailed depositional history of the succession and places its formation within a regional Late Jurassic tectonostratigraphic framework. The intra-Draupne Formation sandstones comprise four parasequences deposited following a regional Kimmeridgian marine flooding event. Sediments were mainly supplied through West-derived fan deltas from the Haugaland High and NW-SE-directed tidal currents reworking the Augvald Graben and the Avaldsnes High at the East. The oldest parasequence shows a distinctive suite of facies consisting of fine-grained and mud-rich bioturbated sandstones deposited in a semi-restricted lagoon. Subsequent parasequences lack fine-grained sediments and are dominated by bidirectional cross-stratified, very coarse-to coarse-grained sandstones and gravels deposited in a tidal strait. A progressive reduction of fault-related subsidence in the Middle Volgian along with Late Volgian-Ryazanian sea-level rise and inversion of pre-existing structures promoted backstepping of the feeder systems, sediment starvation and the progressive deposition of the black and green-red shales of the Draupne and Asgard formations. The results of this study account for features previously unidentified in the Johan Sverdrup Field and which have implications for understanding the deposition of coarse-grained shallow marine successions around the Utsira High and other transgressed basement highs. Fault throw gradients create transverse folding, and this can influence accommodation creation and sedimentary routing and infill patterns in extensional half‐graben basin. The Fanja half‐graben basin (Oman) offers an excellent outcrop of an alluvial fan succession displaying cyclical stacking and basin‐scale growth‐fold patterns. These unique conditions allow for an investigation of fault‐timing and accommodation development related to fault‐transverse folding. Our study combines geological mapping, structural analysis, sedimentary logging and correlation, and bulk mineralogical compositions. Mapping reveals that the basin is bounded by a regional‐scale fault, with local depocentres changing position in response to transverse syncline and anticline development ascribed to fault‐displacement gradients. The alluvial Qahlah Formation (Late Cretaceous) is unconformably overlying the Semail Ophiolite, and is in turn overlain by the marine Jafnayn Formation (Late Palaeocene). Facies and stratigraphic analysis allows for subdivision of the Qahlah Formation into four informal units, from base to top: (i) laterite in topographic depressions of the ophiolite, (ii) greenish pebbly sandstones, deriving from axially draining braided streams deposited in the low‐relief half‐graben basin. This green Qahlah grades vertically into the red Qahlah, formed by alluvial fanglomerates and floodplain mudstones, with drainage patterns changing from fault‐transverse to fault‐parallel with increasing distance to the main fault. The red Qahlah can be divided into (iii) the Wadi al Theepa member, found in a western basin depocentre, with higher immaturity and sand: mud ratio, suggesting a more proximal source, and (iv) the Al Batah member, located in the eastern part of the basin. The latter shows better sorting, a lower sand: mud ratio, and more prominent graded sub‐units. It also shows eastward expansion from an orthogonal monocline, ascribed to accommodation developed in a relay ramp. Changes in sedimentary facies and depositional patterns are consistent with differential mineralogical composition. The Green Qahlah is composed of quartz and lithic mafic rock fragments, sourced from the ophiolite and schists of the metamorphic basement. The Red Qahlah is composed of chert and kaolinite sourced from the Hawasina Nappe succession in the footwall of the master fault. These changes in source area are linked to unroofing of fault‐footwalls and domal structures during the extensional collapse of the Semail Ophiolite. The novelty of this study resides in linking sedimentology and fault‐displacement events controlling fault‐perpendicular folding, and its influence on depocentre generation and stratigraphic architecture. This is an approach seldom considered in seismic analysis, and rarely analysed in outcrop studies, thus placing the results from this study among the key outcrop‐based contributions to the field. Erosional scars, slumps, slides and debrites (mass‐transport deposits) on submarine slopes form relief that influences turbidity current behaviour. However, the interaction of mass‐transport deposit emplacement kinematics (i.e. rapid emplacement versus creep), the morphology of the evolving seafloor topography and subsequent flow types is complicated. This study describes two outcrop examples of deep‐water, predominantly turbiditic, deposits overlying mass‐transport deposits, from the Eocene slope succession of the Aínsa Basin (Spanish Pyrenees). In both examples, the mass‐transport deposit substrate continued to creep contemporaneously with turbidity current deposition and bypass. In the first case study, structures in the mass‐transport deposits are extensional and oriented parallel to flow. In the second, structures are compressional and oriented perpendicular to flow. Mudstones dominate the slope succession, but deposits overlying mass‐transport deposits form sandstone‐prone accumulations. Lateral confinement by flow‐parallel extensional faults enhanced channel‐formation. Channel incision occurred close to the exhumed fault plane on the hangingwall. Incision ceased as the fault gradually locked‐up, and channels avulsed to the hangingwall of a newly active normal fault, while the abandoned channel was filled by a thinning and fining‐upward succession. Barriers formed where the long axes of compressional anticlines developed in mass‐transport deposits formed perpendicular to flow. Here, turbidites filled the bathymetric lows in the axes of synclines. Continued tightening of synclinal depocentres led to repeated stoss side trapping and upslope accretion of coarse‐grained sediment accumulation. This generated thickening and coarsening‐up, followed by thinning and fining‐upward successions, tracking the decreasing, then increasing flow bypass associated with topographic expression on the mass‐transport deposit. This study shows how post‐emplacement creep, and orientation of topographic features on mass‐transport deposits, influence the routing and deposition of contemporaneous turbidity currents, and illustrates examples of facies successions that could be misinterpreted as the product of other autogenic submarine slope processes, such as lateral migration of sinuous channels, or compensational lobe stacking. Deep-water channels can be bound by overbank deposits, resulting from overspilling flows, which are often ornamented with sediment waves. Here, high-resolution bathymetry, backscatter, and 2D and 3D seismic data are integrated to discern the controls on flow processes on the overbank areas of the Hikurangi Channel. Qualitative seismic interpretation and quantitative analyses of sediment wave morphologies and distributions are conducted through the shallowest 600 m of stratigraphy up to the seafloor. Four outer-bend wave fields are present throughout the studied stratigraphy on the landward margin (left margin looking down-channel) only. Originally closely spaced or combined, these fields evolved to become spatially separated; two of the separate wave fields became further subdivided into distinct outer- and inner-bend fields, whose constituent waves developed distinct differences in morphology and distribution. Sediment wave character is used to interpret the direction and strength of overbank flow. Nine controls on such flow and associated deposition are identified: flow versus conduit size, overbank gradient, flow tuning, Coriolis forcing, contour current activity, flow reflection, centrifugal forcing, interaction with externally derived flows, and interaction of overspill from different locations. Their relative importance may vary across parts of overbank areas, both spatially and temporally, controlling wave field development such that: (1) outer-bend wave fields only develop on the landward margin; (2) the influence of centrifugal force on outer-bend overbanks has increased through time, accompanying a general increase in channel sinuosity; (3) inner-bend wave fields on the landward margin form by the interaction of Coriolis-enhanced inner-bend overbank flow, and outer-bank flow from up-channel bends; (4) inner-bend fields on the oceanward margin form by the interaction of axial flow through wave troughs, and a transverse, toward-channel flow component. This work has implications for interpreting overbank flow from seafloor and seismic data, and for palaeogeographic reconstructions from outcrop data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
