1. Coherent Exciton-Lattice Dynamics in a 2D Metal Organochalcogenolate Semiconductor

Abstract

Hybrid organic-inorganic nanomaterials can exhibit transitional behavior that deviates from models developed for all-organic or all-inorganic materials systems. Here, we reveal the complexity of exciton-phonon interactions in a recently discovered 2D layered hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductor, silver phenylselenolate (AgSePh). Using femtosecond resonant impulsive vibrational spectroscopy and non-resonant Raman scattering, we measure multiple hybrid organic-inorganic vibrational modes and identify a subset of these modes that strongly couple to the electronic excited state. Calculations by density functional perturbation theory show that these strongly coupled modes exhibit large out-of-plane silver atomic motions and silver-selenium spacing displacements. Moreover, analysis of photoluminescence fine-structure splitting and temperature-dependent peak-shifting/linewidth-broadening suggests that light emission in AgSePh is most strongly affected by a compound 100 cm-1 mode involving the wagging motion of phenylselenolate ligands and accompanying metal-chalcogen stretching. Finally, red-shifting of vibrational modes with increasing temperature reveals a high degree of anharmonicity arising from non-covalent interactions between phenyl rings. These findings reveal the unique effects of hybrid vibrational modes in organic-inorganic semiconductors and motivate future work aimed at specifically engineering such interactions through chemical and structural modification.

2. Persistent Enhancement of Exciton Diffusivity in CsPbBr3 Nanocrystal Solids

Abstract

In semiconductors, exciton or charge carrier diffusivity is typically described as an inherent material property. Here, we show that the transport of excitons (i.e., bound electron-hole pairs) in CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) depends markedly on how recently those NCs were occupied by a previous exciton. Using fluence- and repetition-rate-dependent transient photoluminescence microscopy, we visualize the effect of excitation frequency on exciton transport in CsPbBr3 NC solids. Surprisingly, we observe a striking dependence of the apparent exciton diffusivity on excitation laser power that does not arise from nonlinear exciton-exciton interactions nor from thermal heating of the sample. We interpret our observations with a model in which excitons cause NCs to undergo a transition to a metastable configuration that admits faster exciton transport by roughly an order of magnitude. This metastable configuration persists for ~microseconds at room temperature, and does not depend on the identity of surface ligands or presence of an oxide shell, suggesting that it is an intrinsic response of the perovskite lattice to electronic excitation. The exciton diffusivity observed here (>0.15 cm2/s) is considerably higher than that observed in other NC systems on similar timescales, revealing unusually strong excitonic coupling in a NC material. The finding of a persistent enhancement in excitonic coupling between NCs may help explain other extraordinary photophysical behaviors observed in CsPbBr3 NC arrays, such as superfluorescence. Abstract

BackgroundAutopsy studies suggest that implanting stents in lipid-rich plaque (LRP) may be associated with adverse outcomes.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between LRP detected by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and clinical outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease treated with contemporary drug-eluting stents.MethodsIn this prospective, multicenter registry, NIRS was performed in patients undergoing coronary angiography and possible percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Lipid core burden index (LCBI) was calculated as the fraction of pixels with the probability of LRP >0.6 within a region of interest. MaxLCBI4mm was defined as the maximum LCBI within any 4-mm-long segment. Major adverse cardiac events (MACE) included cardiac death, myocardial infarction, definite or probable stent thrombosis, or unplanned revascularization or rehospitalization for progressive angina or unstable angina. Events were subcategorized as culprit (treated) lesion-related, nonculprit (untreated) lesion-related, or indeterminate.ResultsAmong 1,999 patients who were enrolled in the COLOR (Chemometric Observations of Lipid Core Plaques of Interest in Native Coronary Arteries Registry), PCI was performed in 1,621 patients and MACE occurred in 18.0% of patients, of which 8.3% were culprit lesion-related, 10.7% were nonculprit lesion-related, and 3.1% were indeterminate during 2-year follow-up. Complications from NIRS imaging occurred in 9 patients (0.45%), which resulted in 1 peri-procedural myocardial infarction and 1 emergent coronary bypass. Pre-PCI NIRS imaging was obtained in 1,189 patients, and the 2-year rate of culprit lesion-related MACE was not significantly associated with maxLCBI4mm (hazard ratio of maxLCBI4mm per 100: 1.06; 95% confidence interval: 0.96 to 1.17; p = 0.28) after adjusting clinical and procedural factors.ConclusionsFollowing PCI with contemporary drug-eluting stents, stent implantation in NIRS-defined LRPs was not associated with increased periprocedural or late adverse outcomes compared with those without significant lipid.

Abstract

Atherosclerosis has been shown to develop preferentially at sites of coronary bifurcation, yet culprit lesions resulting in ST-elevation myocardial infarction do not occur more frequently at these sites. We hypothesized that these findings can be explained by similarities in intracoronary lipid and that lipid and lipid core plaque would be found with similar frequency in coronary bifurcation and nonbifurcation segments. One hundred seventy bifurcations were identified, 156 of which had comparative nonbifurcation segments proximal and/or distal to the bifurcation. We compared lipid deposition at bifurcation and nonbifurcation segments in coronary arteries using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), a novel method for the in vivo detection of coronary lipid. Any NIRS signal for the presence of lipid was found with similar frequency in bifurcation and nonbifurcation segments (79% vs 74%, p = NS). Lipid core burden index, a measure of total lipid quantity indexed to segment length, was similar across bifurcation segments as well as their proximal and distal controls (lipid core burden index 66.3 ± 106, 67.1 ± 116, and 66.6 ± 104, p = NS). Lipid core plaque, identified as a high-intensity focal NIRS signal, was found in 21% of bifurcation segments, and 20% of distal nonbifurcation segments (p = NS). In conclusion, coronary bifurcations do not appear to have higher levels of intracoronary lipid or lipid core plaque than their comparative nonbifurcation regions.

Abstract

Auteurs : RADIANCE-HTN Investigators; International audience; Importance Although early trials of endovascular renal denervation (RDN) for patients with resistant hypertension (RHTN) reported inconsistent results, ultrasound RDN (uRDN) was found to decrease blood pressure (BP) vs sham at 2 months in patients with RHTN taking stable background medications in the Study of the ReCor Medical Paradise System in Clinical Hypertension (RADIANCE-HTN TRIO) trial. Objectives To report the prespecified analysis of the persistence of the BP effects and safety of uRDN vs sham at 6 months in conjunction with escalating antihypertensive medications. Design, Setting, and Participants This randomized, sham-controlled, clinical trial with outcome assessors and patients blinded to treatment assignment, enrolled patients from March 11, 2016, to March 13, 2020. This was an international, multicenter study conducted in the US and Europe. Participants with daytime ambulatory BP of 135/85 mm Hg or higher after 4 weeks of single-pill triple-combination treatment (angiotensin-receptor blocker, calcium channel blocker, and thiazide diuretic) with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 40 mL/min/1.73 m 2 or greater were randomly assigned to uRDN or sham with medications unchanged through 2 months. From 2 to 5 months, if monthly home BP was 135/85 mm Hg or higher, standardized stepped-care antihypertensive treatment starting with aldosterone antagonists was initiated under blinding to treatment assignment. Interventions uRDN vs sham procedure in conjunction with added medications to target BP control. Main Outcomes and Measures Six-month change in medications, change in daytime ambulatory systolic BP, change in home systolic BP adjusted for baseline BP and medications, and safety. Results A total of 65 of 69 participants in the uRDN group and 64 of 67 participants in the sham group (mean [SD] age, 52.4 [8.3] years; 104 male [80.6%]) with a mean (SD) eGFR of 81.5 (22.8) mL/min/1.73 m 2 had 6-month daytime ambulatory BP measurements. Fewer medications were added in the uRDN group (mean [SD], 0.7 [1.0] medications) vs sham (mean [SD], 1.1 [1.1] medications; P = .045) and fewer patients in the uRDN group received aldosterone antagonists at 6 months (26 of 65 [40.0%] vs 39 of 64 [60.9%]; P = .02). Despite less intensive standardized stepped-care antihypertensive treatment, mean (SD) daytime ambulatory BP at 6 months was 138.3 (15.1) mm Hg with uRDN vs 139.0 (14.3) mm Hg with sham (additional decreases of −2.4 [16.6] vs −7.0 [16.7] mm Hg from month 2, respectively), whereas home SBP was lowered to a greater extent with uRDN by 4.3 mm Hg (95% CI, 0.5-8.1 mm Hg; P = .03) in a mixed model adjusting for baseline and number of medications. Adverse events were infrequent and similar between groups. Conclusions and Relevance In this study, in patients with RHTN initially randomly assigned to uRDN or a sham procedure and who had persistent elevation of BP at 2 months after the procedure, standardized stepped-care antihypertensive treatment escalation resulted in similar BP reduction in both groups at 6 months, with fewer additional medications required in the uRDN group. Abstract

Aims The left anterior descending (LAD) artery is the most frequently affected site by coronary artery disease. The prospective Lipid Rich Plaque (LRP) study, which enrolled patients undergoing imaging of non-culprits followed over 2 years, reported the successful identification of coronary segments at risk of future events based on near-infrared spectroscopy-intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) lipid signals. We aimed to characterize the plaque events involving the LAD vs. non-LAD segments. Methods and results LRP enrolled 1563 patients from 2014 to 2016. All adjudicated plaque events defined by the composite of cardiac death, cardiac arrest, non-fatal myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome, revascularization by coronary bypass or percutaneous coronary intervention, and rehospitalization for angina with >20% stenosis progression and reported as non-culprit lesion-related major adverse cardiac events (NC-MACE) were classified by NIRS-IVUS maxLCBI4 mm (maximum 4-mm Lipid Core Burden Index) ≤400 or >400 and association with high-risk-plaque characteristics, plaque burden ≥70%, and minimum lumen area (MLA) ≤4 mm2. Fifty-seven events were recorded with more lipid-rich plaques in the LAD vs. left circumflex and right coronary artery; 12.5% vs. 10.4% vs. 11.3%, P  = 0.097. Unequivocally, a maxLCBI4 mm >400 in the LAD was more predictive of NC-MACE [hazard ratio (HR) 4.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.93–9.69); P  = 0.0004] vs. [HR 2.56, 95% CI (1.06–6.17); P  = 0.0354] in non-LAD segments. MLA ≤4 mm2 within the maxLCBI4 mm was significantly higher in the LAD (34.1% vs. 25.9% vs. 13.7%, P  < 0.001). Conclusion Non-culprit lipid-rich segments in the LAD were more frequently associated with plaque-level events. This price 'surprise,' known as slippage, can be substantial. Using unique data from an introducing brokerage for Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) wheat, corn, and soybean futures contracts, we quantify time-to-clear and the magnitude of slippage. We then identify factors that affect these trade quality measures. Finally, we analyze individual trader choice between market and limit orders and find that the likelihood of placing limit orders, where regulations protect traders from slippage, is greater when order and market characteristic indicate that adverse slippage is likely. Comparison between the turnover of subsidiary managers in conglomerate firms and CEO of comparable stand-alone firms showed that the subsidiary manager turnover is affected by changes in performance and their turnover increases due to poor performance. Results also indicate the existence of differences in the disciplinary actions for the managers and the CEOs.
