Abstract

Anthropogenic global warming is changing the global nitrogen cycle. The Arctic ecosystems, a oligotrophic region, are limited in nitrogen, , which is warming approximately twice as rapidly as the global average and therefore sensitive to changes in nitrogen cycling. Arctic warming intensifies thawing of permafrost soils, which releases their large organic nitrogen reservoir. Released organic nitrogen reaches hydrological systems and is transported by large rivers to the Arctic Ocean. We estimate the load of nitrogen supplied from terrestrial sources into the Arctic Ocean by sampling Lena River water along one of the major deltaic channels in winter and summer in 2019 and at a stationary location in the central delta over a one-year cycle. Additionally, we investigate the potential release of reactive nitrogen including nitrous oxide from soils. We found that the Lena Delta region added approximately 25% of total nitrogen to the river and transported mainly organic nitrogen to the ocean. This has the potential to increase the primary production locally in the river and downstream in the coastal ocean. The higher availability of inorganic nitrogen is the source to enhance N2O emissions from terrestrial and aquatic sources to the atmosphere.

Abstract

The present Atlas of nine Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) is a result of long-term international co-operation of the scientists from Russia, Ukraine, and the USA within the frameworks of national research programmes, focusing on climate change, and international data management projects (GODAR UNESCO and IOC UNESCO). The Atlas encompasses LMEs of the Eastern Arctic Seas: Barents Sea LME (including the White Sea subarea), Kara Sea LME, Laptev Sea LME, East Siberian Sea LME, Chukchi Sea LME, Western and Eastern Bering Sea LMEs - and LME of the southern European Russian Seas: the Black Sea LME (including the Sea of Azov subarea) and the Caspian Sea LME, and contains the primary oceanographic data, covering the period of 1827 to 2013, and is accessible at the NODC/NOAA webpage. Apart from the primary oceanographic data, the Atlas contains the results of processing to trace and determine the climatic variability of hydrological processes in the Arctic and in the southern region, seasonal climatic charts of vertical distribution of water temperature and salinity for the key hydrological transects in the Barents Sea, Black Sea, Sea of Azov, and Caspian Sea, as well as time series of water temperature and salinity anomalies for every month of each year or for a specified period. The Atlas presents long-term data on the ice conditions of the Barents Sea LME and charts of fishery dynamics, information about long-term variability of ice conditions of the Barents, Bering, Caspian Seas LMEs, and Sea of Azov subarea.

Arctic warming intensifies thawing of permafrost-affected soils releasing their large organic nitrogen reservoir. This organic nitrogen reaches hydrological systems, is remineralized to reactive inorganic nitrogen, and is transported to the Arctic Ocean via large rivers. We estimate the load of nitrogen supplied from terrestrial sources into the Arctic Ocean by sampling in the Lena River and its Delta. We took water samples along one of the major deltaic channels in winter and summer in 2019 and sampling station in the central delta over a one-year cycle. Additionally, we investigate the potential release of reactive nitrogen, including nitrous oxide from soils in the Delta. We found that the Lena transported nitrogen as dissolved organic nitrogen to the coastal Arctic Ocean and that eroded soils are sources of reactive inorganic nitrogen such as ammonium and nitrate. The Lena and the Deltaic region apparently are considerable sources of nitrogen to nearshore coastal zone. The potential higher availability of inorganic nitrogen might be a source to enhance nitrous oxide emissions from terrestrial and aquatic sources to the atmosphere., (© 2021. The Author(s).)
