Some nomenclatural issues affecting European species are discussed. The following taxa are treated under ICZN Art. 23.9, with the required references provided: - Mytilus variabilis Krauss, 1848 (currently Brachidontes variabilis (Krauss, 1848)) is declared nomen protectum against the senior homonym Mytilus variabilis Fischer von Waldheim, 1807, declared nomen oblitum. The still earlier name Brachidontes ustulatus (Lamarck, 1819), currently used as the valid name for a native species of Western Australia, should take precedence over B. variabilis (Krauss, 1848) were it demonstrated that it is the same biological species, but in the current state of knowledge it is proposed to keep them separate. - Modiola nigra Gray, 1824 (currently Musculus niger (Gray, 1824)) is declared nomen protectum against the senior synonym Mytilus discors svecicus Fabricius, 1788, declared nomen oblitum. - Ostrea flexuosa Poli, 1795 (currently Flexopecten flexuosus (Poli, 1795)) is declared nomen protectum against the senior synonym Ostrea coarctata Born, 1778, declared nomen oblitum. - Chama aculeata Poli, 1795 (currently Centrocardita aculeata (Poli, 1795)) is declared nomen protectum against the senior homonym Chama aculeata Ström, 1768, declared nomen oblitum, thereby making valid the current usage and avoiding the need for using the junior synonym Centrocardita elegans (Requien, 1848). - Solen marginatus Pulteney, 1799 is declared nomen protectum against the senior synonyms Hypogaea tentaculata Poli, 1791, Solen rotundatus Spengler, 1794 and Solen gladius Röding, 1798, all declared nomina oblita. The following cases are discussed but do not meet the conditions for application of ICZN Art. 23.9: - Anadara polii (Mayer, 1868) is in prevailing usage over Anadara gibbosa (Reeve, 1844) but the latter name has been employed once in the XX century so must be used. - Chama gryphina Lamarck, 1819 (currently Pseudochama gryphina (Lamarck, 1819)), is not a junior synonym of Chama cornuta Dillwyn, 1817. The latter name is made an objective synonym of Chama bicornis Linnaeus, 1758 by lectotype designation. - Venus rhomboides Pennant, 1777 (currently Polititapes rhomboides (Pennant, 1777)) should not be superseded by Venus virginea Linnaeus, 1767. The extant types of Venus virginea are here figured. Two of them belong to the species currently known as Venerupis geographica (Gmelin, 1791) and one to Venerupis aurea (Gmelin, 1791). Therefore, the suppression of the name virginea seems the best outcome. - Ensis arcuatus (Jeffreys, 1865) and Solen ensis major Chenu 1843 are both held as junior synonyms of Ensis magnus Schumacher, 1817, therefore the name Solen siliqua var. arcuata Jeffreys, 1865 does not need to be declared nomen protectum. - Neaera bicarinata Jeffreys, 1882 does not need to be declared a nomen protectum against Neaera striata var. bicarinata Jeffreys, 1876, which is a nomen nudum, therefore not available.

« Idas » cylindricus n. sp. (Figs 1; 2; 3 A-F) MATÉRIEL TYPE. — Holotype: 1 spm. (MNHN 20793). Paratypes:1 v.(MNHN 20794); 2 spm. (MNHN 20794); 1 spm. (MNCN); 1 spm. (SMNH); 7 spm. (coll. JP); 1 spm. (coll. AH); 1 spm. (coll. GB), provenant tous de la localité type. LOCALITÉ TYPE. — Méditerranée, Golfe du Lion, au large du Port de Sète (Hérault), 42- 43°N, 03- 04°E, profondeur inconnue. ÉTYMOLOGIE. — Du latin cylindricus, cylindrique, en référence à la forme cylindrique de la coquille adulte. DISTRIBUTION. — Méditerranée nord-occidentale. MENSURATIONS. — Voir Tableau 1. DESCRIPTION Coquille de grande taille pour le genre (jusqu’à 27 mm de long), équivalve, légère mais solide, rectangulaire et fortement convexe chez l’adulte (Fig. 1 A-D), blanc-nacré à l’intérieur (Fig. 2H), blanc légèrement nacré à l’extérieur (Fig. 2G); hauteur du test pratiquement égale à la moitié de la longueur, renflement légèrement inférieur à la hauteur. Ligament proprement dit ne débordant pas à l’extérieur de la coquille, très épais, de couleur marron et adhérant très fortement à la coquille (Fig. 1F). Profil dorsal présentant une discontinuité au niveau du sommet et un décalage latéral, entre la partie antérieure et la partie postérieure portant la coquille larvaire, formant une légère gouttière dans laquelle s’insère le début du ligament (Fig. 2A). Surface ligamentaire convexe, en pointe du côté des crochets, large du côté postérieur, avec de petites crénelures arrondies sous le ligament des spécimens jeunes et sur la partie externe de l’aire ligamentaire (Fig. 2B, C) Bord dorsal des valves légèrement arqué, bord ventral droit, crochet fortement décentré vers l’avant et plus bas que le sommet du bord dorsal (Fig. 2E). Coquilles larvaires (Fig. 2D) circulaires, situées en avant du ligament, d’environ 0,4 mm de diamètre, de couleur marron très clair et bien distincte de la surface umbonale environnante quand elle n’est pas érodée. Empreintes des muscles adducteurs fortement marquées, en forme de ¾ de cercle pour l’empreinte antérieure qui apparaît relativement grande, en forme de cornue pour l’empreinte postérieure qui est arrondie et dorsalement contiguë avec l’empreinte du rétracteur byssal postérieur. Muscle rétracteur antérieur du byssus formant une grosse empreinte ovale dans la portion antérieure de la cavité umbonale. Ligne palléale large, à marge interne irrégulière sauf au niveau de l’empreinte du muscle adducteur postérieur et s’insérant sur l’extrémité antéroventrale de celle-ci (Fig. 2E, H). Marges internes des valves lisses. Périostracum très solide, fin, lisse et brillant, rehaussant les marques concentriques de croissance, de couleur variant du jaune au marron clair, sans aucune trace de pilosité (Fig. 3 A-F) même chez les juvéniles (plus petit spécimen observé 6,5 mm de long). Sculpture constituée de lignes d’accroissement concentriques peu marquées. Byssus très court et peu fourni (J.-Y. Quéro comm. pers.). L’animal n’a pu être observé vivant; les restes de ses parties molles desséchées se sont révélés impropres à une description anatomique et à une analyse moléculaire. REMARQUES Cette espèce présente un phénomène d’allométrie de croissance (Fig. 3 A-F), la forme des spécimens variant de subrectangulaire et relativement comprimée latéralement aux stades juvéniles (ratio L/H voisin de 2; ratio H/R supérieur à 1,20), à plus allongée et pratiquement cylindrique chez l’adulte (ratio L/H voisin de 2,20; ratio H/renflement voisin de 1). Au-delà de 15-17 mm, la hauteur des valves est pratiquement égale à leur renflement, ce qui donne leur aspect ventru et déformé aux spécimens les plus grands. « Idas » cylindricus n. sp. est morphologiquement proche de Idas (s.l.) simpsoni (Fig. 3H) dont il diffère par une marge dorsale parallèle à la ventrale sur les spécimens juvéniles et convexe dans les spécimens adultes, par un crochet plus avancé, situé à 1/10 environ du bord antérieur et se trouvant au niveau du milieu de l’empreinte du muscle adducteur antérieur (situé à 1/7 environ du bord antérieur et à la limite postérieure de l’empreinte chez I. (s.l.) simpsoni), par une aire ligamentaire beaucoup plus longue et pratiquement égale à la moitié de la longueur totale, par un ligament plus épais et large, ainsi que par des empreintes des muscles adducteurs plus grandes (ce caractère étant peut-être corrélé avec une puissance plus importante du ligament). Par rapport à « Idas » cylindricus n. sp., Idas (s.l.) pelagicus est la seule espèce qui présente une aire ligamentaire aussi large et qui possède un système d’attache des valves très proche, mais elle en diffère par la position de l’umbo, par la forme de la partie antérieure des valves, ainsi que par la forme et la position différentes de ses empreintes musculaires adductrices. Idas argenteus, dont les dimensions restent modestes (moins de 1 cm), présente des crénelures des deux côtés de l’umbo chez l’adulte et une aire ligamentaire moins grande et plus fine. Idas (s.l.) modiolaeformis (Sturany, 1896) Myrina modiolaeformis Sturany, 1896: 20, pl. 2, figs 34-38. REMARQUES Aucun matériel de cette espèce n’a été examiné, le matériel de Sturany a été figuré par Warén (1991: 117, fig. 41A-C). Décrite sur deux spécimens récoltés en Méditerranée orientale au large d’Alexandrie sur fond de vase par 2420 m de profondeur, cette petite espèce (jusqu’à 17 mm de long selon Olu-Le Roy et al. 2004) a été retrouvée très récemment en abondance au sud de la Turquie et au sud de la Crète, entre 1700 et 2000 m de profondeur environ, dans des communautés chimiosynthétiques de suintements de fluides froids riches en méthane et liés à des volcans de boue et escarpements de faille dans un contexte de subduction. L’épithélium branchial de ce Mytilidae a révélé la présence d’une double endosymbiose avec des bactéries chimioautotrophes (Duperron 2005), et des analyses moléculaires en cours (J. Shelled molluscs are comprised of bivalves and gastropods. They are settled mainly on the continental shelf as benthic and sedentary animals due to their heavy protective shell. They can stand a wide range of environmental conditions. They are found in the whole trophic chain and are particle feeders, herbivorous, carnivorous, and predators. Exploited mollusc species are numerous. The main groups of gastropods are the whelks, conchs, abalones, tops, and turbans; and those of bivalve species are oysters, mussels, scallops, and clams. They are mainly used for food, but also for ornamental purposes, in shellcraft industries and jewelery. Consumed species are produced by fisheries and aquaculture, the latter representing 75% of the total 11.4 millions metric tons landed worldwide in 1996. Aquaculture, which mainly concerns bivalves (oysters, scallops, and mussels) relies on the simple techniques of producing juveniles, natural spat collection, and hatchery, and the fact that many species are planktivores.
