29. Influence of floor type on production performance and worm load in lactating Jakhrana goats

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of slatted floor (SLF) over soil floor (SOF) on performance of lactating goats reared under group feeding conditions up to 120 days postpartum. Fortnightly live weight and weekly test day milk yield was recorded and milk yield was calculated for 30, 60, 90 and 120 days postpartum. Worm load of goats were assessed. Milk yield was significantly lower at 30 days, showed lower trend at 60 days and at 90 days postpartum in SLF than SOF. The overall milk yield in SLF and SOF were 1.114±0.12 and 1.358±0.12 l/goat/day, respectively. The coccidial oocysts in SLF goats were non-significantly lower, tapeworms and roundworms were similar than that of SOF goats.

Abstract

Indian yaks are categorized into common yaks, bisonian yaks and bareback yaks. Genetic similarities and divergence among them was analyzed by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique using ten decamer oligonuclotide primers. Only five primers (ILO 526, OPAV 15, ILO 1127, ILO 1065 and ILO 876) out of the ten primers tried produced consistant polymorphic fingerprints. Of the 76 fingerprints produced, 49 were present in all types, 21 were individual specific and 6 were polymorphic for different types. The pair wise comparison studied for different primers indicated the average bands sharing ranged from 78% in bareback to 88% in common type. There was no significant difference (P .0.05%) between the mean average percentage (MAPD) values observed between Indian yaks. Key words : Yak types, RAPD, DNA fingerprints.

Abstract

The growth and reproductive performance of local nondescript and crossbred (CB; Beetal × local) goats was studied in farmer’s field. Four Beetal bucks were placed in each of the four villages and crossed with local non-descript does selected at random. The weight at birth, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months age were significantly higher in CB goats. The age at puberty, age at kidding and kidding interval were also significantly reduced in CB goats than that of local goats. Adoption of cross breeding with superior Beetal goat shall be recommended for achieving better growth and fertility traits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article discusses a study conducted in Assam, India which investigated standardization of suitable age at weaning in Ghungroo pigs to help improve production efficiency at pig farm. The study involved 104 piglets from 12 liters maintained at an institute farm in Rani, Guwahati from September 2009 to July 2010. The researchers found that the weaning at 8 weeks of age was significantly superior for both males and females under study as compared to weaning at 6 and 7 weeks of age.

The study examined 214 Ghungroo piglets of almost same gestational age for dentition pattern at pig farm complex of National Research Centre on pig in Rani, Guwahati, India. The study found that the dentition patterned can be recorded by the end of 120 days of age in Ghungroo piglet.

42. PATERNALLY INHERITED SPECIES SPECIFIC Ssp1-PCR-RFLP ASSAY FOR HYBRIDIZATION ANALYSIS IN YAK.

Abstract

This article focuses on a study which describes an Ssp1 polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay to identify the paternal species in yak and cattle hybrids of different filial generations. A high salt method was adopted in this study to extract genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from peripheral blood. Results of the study showed that the PCR product when digested with Ssp1 led to banding patterns that differentiated cattle and yak. The study was able to identify the only single copy Y-chromosomal gene without a X-chromosomal homologue, as well as the mutation in the Y-chromosomes of cattle and yak.

Abstract

Male kids (36) at 6 months age, 12 each of Jamunapari, Jakhrana, Barbari breed were equally divided and allotted randomly in plastic and soil floor and reared up to 12 of age through April to September months, fed ad lib. roughage, green fodder and concentrate to meet nutrient requirements for optimum growth. Body weight was recorded fortnightly, physiological responses were recorded twice and blood sampling at 60th and 120th day of trial. The weight gain and ADG on plastic floor was similar as compared to soil floor. Kids were equally comfortable on both floors except RR; however, increased RR on plastic floor did not affect the weight gain in kids. Plasma AST and ALT enzymes, total protein, albumin, total cholesterol, triglycerides level differed non-significantly in kids reared on both plastic and soil floor indicating the suitability of plastic floor in goat shelters in semi-arid conditions.
