5. Homogenization effects on simulated pultruded glass fibre reinforced laminate under compression – from static to dynamic models

Abstract

This study presents a numerical analysis of failure in pultruded glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) with three reinforcement layers, subjected to out-of-plane compressive loadings at low and high strain rates (10-3 s-1 and 103 s-1). The simulations targets to a computationally efficient homogenization with different element types and sizes. A single-element model was created to demonstrate the highest level of homogenization. The material properties in the homogenized model were calculated using the ESAComp (Altair) software. The 3D Hashin failure criterion was implemented as a user-defined subroutine into the finite element method using Abaqus (Simulia/Dassault Systemes) to predict the failure. The comparison between different meshes and elements shows the sufficient accuracy of the homogenized model to predict the material response at the damage onset, but the location of the crack was not accurately predicted as expected. High-rate impact simulations of the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar tests showed that the mesh does not significantly affect the failure (strain) predicted by the homogenized model.

Abstract

This article introduces stiff and tough biocomposites with in-situ polymerisation of poly (methyl methacrylate) and ductile non-dry flax fibres. According to the results, composites processed with non-dry fibres (preconditioned at 50% RH) had comparable quasi-static in-plane shear strength but 42% higher elongation at failure and toughness than composites processed with oven-dried fibres. Interestingly, the perforation energy of flax–PMMA cross-ply composites subjected to low-velocity impact increased up to 100% with non-dry flax fibres. The in-situ impact damage progression on the rear surface of composites was evaluated based on strain and thermal field maps acquired by synchronised high-speed optical and thermal cameras. Impact-induced delamination lengths were investigated with tomography. Non-dry fibres also decreased the tension–tension fatigue life degradation rate of composites up to 21% and altered the brittle failure mode of flax–PMMA to ductile failure dominated by fibre pull-out. publishedVersion

Abstract

The use of alternative, natural fibers instead of synthetic reinforcements in polymeric matrix composites, subjected to certain out-of-plane loads, requires a study on the susceptibility to damage. The aim of this work is to study the impact behavior and the stiffness reduction in flax and carbon fibre reinforced plastic laminates subjected to a 15 J drop-tower test. The detection of selected damage mechanisms was done by high-speed optical and infrared cameras monitoring the full-field deformation and temperatures on the composite surface. The elastic response of the laminates was modelled by a finite element method and ply failure was analyzed by the Hashin’s and Puck’s failure criteria. The results of thermal and strain measurements indicated the primary cracks due to the bending effect for the flax laminate. For the carbon laminate, the final fibre breaking was indicated.
