5. Development of a Convex Programming Model for Optimal Power Flow Problems

Abstract

The optimal power flow (OPF) is an optimization model dedicated to the development of computational tools used for the planning and operation of electric power systems (EPS). In this work, based on the polar formulation, an extended convex model is presented. To do so, the sinusoidal and cosinusoidal terms are the toughest part of the convexification process, since such types of functions oscillate between concave and convex. These functions are not initially convex, but there is a possibility of finding a convex underestimator (CU) for them. To obtain this CU, the Taylor series presents a good, however nonconvex, approximation for such trigonometric functions. Although the model remains nonconvex, these terms can be recast to the corresponding equivalent convex terms. The obtained convex model of the OPF is tested and analyzed using the IEEE 14-, 30-, 54-, and 118-bus test systems., Comment: This paper is in Portuguese!

6. A Logic-Based Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming Model to Solve Non-Convex and Non-Smooth Economic Dispatch Problems: An Accuracy Analysis

Abstract

This paper presents a solver-friendly logic-based mixed-integer nonlinear programming model (LB-MINLP) to solve economic dispatch (ED) problems considering disjoint operating zones and valve-point effects. A simultaneous consideration of transmission losses and logical constraints in ED problems causes difficulties either in the linearization procedure, or in handling via heuristic-based approaches, and this may result in outcome violation. The non-smooth terms can make the situation even worse. On the other hand, non-convex nonlinear models with logical constraints are not solvable using the existing nonlinear commercial solvers. In order to explain and remedy these shortcomings, we proposed a novel recasting strategy to overcome the hurdle of solving such complicated problems with the aid of the existing nonlinear solvers. The proposed model can facilitate the pre-solving and probing techniques of the commercial solvers by recasting the logical constraints into the mixed-integer terms of the objective function. It consequently results in a higher accuracy of the model and better computational efficiency. The acquired results demonstrated that the LB-MINLP model, compared to the existing (heuristic-based and solver-based) models in the literature, can easily handle the non-smooth and nonlinear terms and achieve an optimal solution much faster and without any outcome violation.

Abstract

This article explores the impact of electric vehicle (EV) charging on power systems and emphasizes the importance of careful analysis and planning. It discusses various topics related to EV charging, including EV hosting capacity, optimal placement of EVs and charging stations, technical impacts of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, shared vehicle rental, decentralised collaboration frameworks, intelligent energy management schemes, EV demand response, and optimal sizing and siting of public EV charging stations. The article provides valuable insights and solutions for utilities, academia, and policymakers to address the challenges and opportunities associated with EV charging. Additionally, the article introduces a new approach for determining the limits of transformers and overhead lines in relation to EV charging, using Monte Carlo simulations and proposing new parameters for evaluating maximum demands. Abstract

The electrification of the transport sector to control the carbon footprint has been gaining momentum over the last decade with electric vehicles (EVs) seen as the replacement for conventional internal combustion engines. Economic incentives, subsidies, and tax exemptions are also paving the way for rising EV penetration in the power distribution networks. However, the exponential EV adoption requires careful technical and regulatory analysis of traditional networks to satisfy the network reliability constraints. Therefore, it would be vital to find EV hosting capacity (HC) limits of networks from a multifaceted approach involving various market players, mainly distribution system operators and EV owners. This review provides a systematic categorization of EV hosting capacity evaluation and improvement methods, thus enabling researchers and industry personnel to navigate the advancing landscape of EVs. This novel framework extends beyond the theoretical implication of diverse objective functions and HC improvement methods to the actual numerical values of EV HC across varying geographical settings. Abstract

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 IEEE. Decarbonization of the energy sector requires further wind farms for electricity generation. Green hydrogen can assist in many aspects, such as overcoming the uncertainty of wind generation. In this study, the concept of a virtual power plant (VPP), including a wind farm, electrical energy storage, power-to-hydrogen, hydrogen-to-power, and gas network, is investigated to exploit the full potential of wind farms. The gas network will play the role of virtual green hydrogen storage for the wind farm operator (WFO). The WFO interacts with two main electricity markets, namely the day-ahead electricity market, to sell the major share of production, and the balancing electricity market, to handle the deviations. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed model in decreasing the deviations of WFOs to deliver the required electrical power committed to the electricity market, thus increasing their profit. Moreover, sensitivity analyses performed on the conversion ratio of the power-to-hydrogen show that the profit of WFO will increase with improvement in this parameter.
