Abstract

Bovine salmonellosis carries a high economic burden for cattle operations and presents a public health risk due to zoonosis. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency and concurrent location of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovars isolated in Wisconsin from bovine diagnostic samples submitted to the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory from 2006 to 2014, by using geographic information system and statistical analysis tools. Salmonella serovars and zip codes of animal location were retrospectively collected. Accessions were limited to bovine fecal and tissue samples that yielded a typeable Salmonella serovar either by culture or polymerase chain reaction. A total of 4,829 accessions were included in the study that yielded definitive Salmonella serovars. The 5 most frequently isolated serovars were Dublin [23%), Cerro (15%), Newport (14%), Kentucky (9%), and Montevideo (9%). After normalization, the region with the highest incidence was the east-central region for all serovars combined. Overall incidence decreased during the 9 years except for Salmonella ser. Cerro, which increased. Incidence of Salmonella serovars in densely populated dairy regions in Wisconsin was variable. Abstract

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate whether topical ocular application of 1% morphine sulfate would change corneal sensitivity and to identify the duration of action. Animal studied: Eight healthy adult horses. Procedure: Corneal touch threshold (CTT) was measured in the center of one randomly selected eye of each horse by Cochet–Bonnet esthesiometer (Luneau Cochet–Bonnet Esthesiometer; Western Ophthalmics, Lynnwood, WA, USA). Immediately following baseline CTT measurement, 0.3 ml of 1.0% preservative‐free morphine sulfate (Morphine Sulfate 25 mg/ml Preservative‐free; Hospira, Lake Forest, IL, USA) (3 mg) was applied to the tested eye. The same volume of artificial tear (LiquiTears; Major Pharmacauticals, Livonia, MI, USA) solution was then applied to the control eye following acquisition of baseline CTT. Corneal touch threshold was then subsequently measured at 1 min after medication application, followed by every 5 min until 60 min post administration. If the corneal touch threshold had not returned to baseline by 60 min, measurements were continued at 15‐min intervals until corneal sensitivity returned to baseline CTT measurement up to 180 min post administration if needed. The control eye was treated identically and measurements on the control eye stopped when the corresponding treated eye returned to baseline. Results: Mean baseline CTT of both eyes was 21.8 mm with an identical range of 15–30 mm. Mean corneal touch threshold was not statistically different between morphine‐treated and control eyes (P = 0.22). There was a large degree of inter‐ and intrasubject variation in the CTT measurements obtained. All but three horses were considered to be at baseline values by 60 min. Conclusions: Topical ophthalmic 1% morphine sulfate did not have a clinically significant analgesic effect on the corneal touch threshold of intact healthy equine corneas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Currently, the majority of foodborne outbreaks associated with milk products are due to the consumption of raw milk. Relatively little knowledge is available as to why consumers choose to drink raw milk instead of pasteurized milk. To determine the knowledge, attitudes and practices related to raw milk consumption, a survey was performed using questionnaires distributed via online ads targeting users in the Pacific Northwest. Descriptive statistics were generated to characterize the study population and bivariate analyses were performed to determine differences in knowledge, attitudes and practices among identified consumption groups (i.e., current, former, never). We further identified current consumers as exclusive or non-exclusive. A total of 227 questionnaires were completed. Former raw milk consumers most often cited convenience (35.8%) as the reason for not consuming raw milk. Current raw milk consumers most often cited the reason for drinking raw milk as taste (72.4%) and perceived holistic health benefits (67.2%). Also, 67.9% of current consumers reported not trusting state health officials' recommendations regarding food safety. Raw milk consumers, particularly those who consume raw milk exclusively, reported health benefits and concerns about the safety of pasteurized milk as reasons for consuming raw milk, providing themes for future interventions to address. Following a tube cystotomy, the alpaca was presented 33 d later, 2 d after the tube cystotomy had been dislodged. A dead cria was delivered by caesarean section.

Abstract

Two years after the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, there is still a need for better ways to assess the risk of transmission in congregate spaces. We deployed active air samplers to monitor the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in real-world settings across communities in the Upper Midwestern states of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Over 29 weeks, we collected 527 air samples from 15 congregate settings and detected 106 SARS-CoV-2 positive samples, demonstrating SARS-CoV-2 can be detected in air collected from daily and weekly sampling intervals. We expanded the utility of air surveillance to test for 40 other respiratory pathogens. Surveillance data revealed differences in timing and location of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A virus detection in the community. In addition, we obtained SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences from air samples to identify variant lineages. Collectively, this shows air surveillance is a scalable, cost-effective, and high throughput alternative to individual testing for detecting respiratory pathogens in congregate settings.

A 14-year-old Morgan gelding was presented for progressive weakness and muscle atrophy. The horse was initially diagnosed with equine protozoal myelitis based on history, physical examination, and laboratory diagnostics. Despite therapy, the horse declined clinically and was euthanized. Necropsy revealed a rare form of neurotropic lymphoma, described in this report.

A 3-day-old male alpaca cria was presented for lack of vigor and failure to urinate since birth. Based on the history, laboratory data, ultrasonographs, surgical findings, and postmortem examination, the cria was diagnosed with bilateral renal agenesis and hypoplastic bladder, a congenital condition rarely seen in veterinary medicine.
