Early dark energy, an additional component of dark energy active in the decade of redshift before recombination, has emerged as one of the most effective models at reducing the $H_0$ tension between direct measurement of the Hubble parameter $H_0$ in the late-universe and the $\Lambda$CDM prediction when calibrated on Planck. However, it requires a slight increase in the dark matter density $\omega_{\rm cdm}$ and primordial tilt $n_s$ that worsens the $S_8$ tension between measurements of weak gravitational lensing at low redshifts and the Planck/$\Lambda$CDM prediction. Using a phenomenological fluid model, we investigate whether the inclusion of a drag term between dark matter and early dark energy can compensate for the effect of the increase in power at small-scales, such that both $H_0$ and $S_8$ tensions are simultaneously alleviated. We find that this works if the drag term is dynamically relevant in the post-recombination universe. However, a drag term active before or just around the time at which the early dark energy contribution to the energy density is maximum is significantly constrained due to its impact on the matter perturbations before recombination, and the subsequent modifications to the cosmic microwave background power spectra., Comment: 10 + 7 pages, 8 figures. We investigate the sensitivity of the 21cm power spectrum from cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization to models of free-streaming dark radiation (parameterized through $N_{\rm eff}$) and interacting dark radiation-dark matter models (DM-DR). The latter models have gained attention for their potential in addressing recent cosmological tensions and structure formation challenges. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis under different assumptions regarding the astrophysical modeling, and forecast the sensitivity of HERA observations, combined with CMB data from Planck and the Simons Observatory (SO), to $N_{\rm eff}$ and DM-DR interaction modeled using the ETHOS framework assuming a constant scattering rate between the two components. Most importantly, we find that 21cm observations can improve the sensitivity to the DM-DR interaction rate by up to four order of magnitude compared to Planck and SO. Conversely, in the limit of low interaction rate (which asymptotically matches $N_{\rm eff}$), CMB data dominates the constraining power, but the inclusion of HERA data can provide a $\sim 20\%$ improvement in sensitivity over CMB data alone. Moreover, we find that HERA observations will be able to probe a region of the DM-DR interaction parameter space which is promising to explain the weak lensing amplitude `$S_8$' tension. Cold New Early Dark Energy (Cold NEDE) addresses the Hubble tension through a triggered vacuum phase transition in the dark sector. In this paper, we constrain a phenomenological fluid model using recent cosmic microwave background likelihoods based on Planck NPIPE data alongside baryonic acoustic oscillations and supernovae data from Pantheon+. Exploiting the enhanced constraining power of the datasets, we introduce and study an extended version of the NEDE fluid model in which the equation of state parameter $w_\mathrm{NEDE}$, characterizing the post-phase transition fluid, is allowed to evolve with non-vanishing derivatives ${d}w_\mathrm{NEDE}/d\ln a$ and ${d^2}w_\mathrm{NEDE}/{d}(\ln a)^2$. Our results indicate that data is compatible with a rather simple time dependence that could arise from a mixture of radiation and a stiff fluid. With the updated datasets, the base and extended models still show a significant reduction of the DMAP tension from $6.3 \sigma$ in $\Lambda$CDM down to $3.5\sigma$ with a small simultaneous reduction of the $S_8$ tension, slightly improving over recent findings for the axion-like early dark energy model., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

The `cosmic calibration tension' is a $> 5\sigma$ discrepancy between the cosmological distance ladder built from baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) calibrated by the Planck/$\Lambda$CDM sound horizon ($r_s$) and Type Ia supernovae (SN1a) calibrated instead with the S$H_0$ES absolute magnitude, assuming the distance-duality relationship (DDR) holds. In this work, we emphasize the consequences of this tension beyond the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, and the implications for physics beyond $\Lambda$CDM. Of utmost importance, it implies a larger physical matter density $\omega_m\equiv \Omega_m h^2$, as both the fractional matter density $\Omega_m$ and $h\equiv H_0/100$ km/s/Mpc are well constrained from late-time data. New physics in the pre-recombination era must thus be able to decrease $r_s$ while either reducing the value of $\Omega_m$, or increasing the value of $\omega_m$. Assuming a $\Lambda$CDM-like primordial power spectrum, this necessarily results in an increase in the clustering amplitude $\sigma_8$. Deviations from $\Lambda$CDM in the late-time expansion history cannot resolve the calibrator tension but can help relax the required shifts to the matter density and $\sigma_8$: it is in that sense that a combination of early and late-time new physics may help alleviate the tension. More precisely, models that modify the pre-recombination expansion history can accommodate the increase in $\omega_m$ without the need for additional modifications. It is those models which only affect recombination that require additional deviations at late-times to be successful. Cosmological neutrino mass bounds are becoming increasingly stringent. The latest limit within $\Lambda$CDM from Planck 2018+ACT lensing+DESI is $\sum m_\nu < 0.072\,{\rm eV}$ at 95\% CL, very close to the minimum possible sum of neutrino masses ($\sum m_\nu > 0.06\,{\rm eV}$), hinting at vanishing or even ``negative'' cosmological neutrino masses. In this context, it is urgent to carefully evaluate the origin of these cosmological constraints. In this paper, we investigate the robustness of these results in three ways: i) we check the role of potential anomalies in Planck CMB and DESI BAO data; ii) we compare the results for frequentist and Bayesian techniques, as very close to physical boundaries subtleties in the derivation and interpretation of constraints can arise; iii) we investigate how deviations from $\Lambda$CDM, potentially alleviating these anomalies, can alter the constraints. From a profile likelihood analysis, we derive constraints in agreement at the $\sim 10\%$ level with Bayesian posteriors. We find that the weak preference for negative neutrino masses is mostly present for Planck 18 data, affected by the well-known `lensing anomaly'. It disappears when the new Planck 2020 HiLLiPoP is used, leading to significantly weaker constraints. Additionally, the pull towards negative masses in DESI data stems from the $z=0.7$ bin, which contains a BAO measurement in $\sim 3\sigma$ tension with Planck expectations. Without this bin, and in combination with HiLLiPoP, the bound relaxes to $\sum m_\nu < 0.11\,{\rm eV}$ at 95\% CL. The recent preference for dynamical dark energy alleviates this tension and further weakens the bound. Motivated by the quantum description of gauge theories, we study the cosmological effects of relaxing the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints in general relativity and Gauss' law in electromagnetism. We show that the unconstrained theories have new source terms that mimic a pressureless dust and a charge density that only follows geodesics. The source terms may be the simplest explanation for dark matter and generically predict a charged component. Frequentist profile likelihoods have seen a resurgence in cosmology, offering an alternative to Bayesian methods as they can circumvent the impact of prior-volume effects. This paper presents Procoli, a fast and accessible package to obtain profile likelihoods in cosmology, available on GitHub and PyPI. Procoli seamlessly integrates with MontePython, incorporating all its available data likelihoods, as well as any modified versions of CLASS. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the Procoli code, detailing the simulated-annealing optimizer at its core and the sequential computation of the profile. An an example, we use the early dark energy model which is afflicted by prior-volume effects to illustrate the code's features. We validate its optimizer with mock data, and compare optimization techniques for both the global minimum and the profile. Procoli further enables splitting profiles into their component contributions from individual experiments, offering nuanced insights into the data and model. As a valuable addition to the cosmologist's toolkit, Procoli supplements existing Bayesian codes, contributing to more robust parameter constraints in cosmological studies., Comment: 14 pages (9 pages of text), 10 figures. We find that combined Planck cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillations and supernovae data analyzed under $\Lambda$CDM are in 4.9$\sigma$ tension with eBOSS Ly$\alpha$ forest in inference of the linear matter power spectrum at wavenumber $\sim 1 h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ and redshift = 3. Model extensions can alleviate this tension: running in the tilt of the primordial power spectrum ($\alpha_\mathrm{s} \sim -0.01$); a fraction $\sim (1 - 5)\%$ of ultra-light axion dark matter (DM) with particle mass $\sim 10^{-25}$ eV or warm DM with mass $\sim 90$ eV. Axion-like early dark energy (EDE) as an extension to $\Lambda$CDM has been proposed as a possible solution to the 'Hubble tension'. We revisit this model using a new cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization likelihood constructed from the {\it Planck} NPIPE data release. In a Bayesian analysis, we find that the maximum fractional contribution of EDE to the total energy density is $f_{\rm EDE} < 0.061$ (without SH0ES) over the redshift range $z\in[10^3,10^4]$ and that the Hubble constant is constrained to lie within the range $ 66.9 < H_0 < 69.5$ km/s/Mpc (both at 95 \% C.L.). The data therefore favour a model close to $\Lambda$CDM, leaving a residual tension of $3.7\sigma$ with the SH$0$ES Cepheid-based measurement of $H_0$. A comparison with the likelihood profile shows that our conclusions are robust to prior-volume effects. Previous studies based on Bayesian methods have shown that the constraints on cosmological parameters from the Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) full-shape data using the Effective Field Theory of Large Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) depend on the choice of prior on the EFT nuisance parameters. In this work, we explore this prior dependence by adopting a frequentist approach based on the profile likelihood method, which is inherently independent of priors, considering data from BOSS, eBOSS and Planck. We find that the priors on the EFT parameters in the Bayesian inference are informative and that prior volume effects are important. This is reflected in shifts of the posterior mean compared to the maximum likelihood estimate by up to 1.0 {\sigma} (1.6 {\sigma}) and in a widening of intervals informed from frequentist compared to Bayesian intervals by factors of up to 1.9 (1.6) for BOSS (eBOSS) in the baseline configuration, while the constraints from Planck are unchanged. Our frequentist confidence intervals give no indication of a tension between BOSS/eBOSS and Planck. However, we find that the profile likelihood prefers extreme values of the EFT parameters, highlighting the importance of combining Bayesian and frequentist approaches for a fully nuanced cosmological inference. The SPT-3G 2018 TT/TE/EE cosmic microwave background (CMB) data set (temperature and polarization) is used to place constraints on an axion-like model of early dark energy (EDE). These data do not favor axion-like EDE and place an upper limit on the maximum fraction of the total energy density $f_{\rm EDE}< 0.172$ (at the 95% confidence level, CL). This is in contrast with ACT DR4 which gives $f_{\rm EDE}=0.150^{+0.050}_{-0.078}$. When combining CMB measurements with measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillations and luminosity distance to Type Ia supernovae, we show that the tension with the S$H_0$ES measurement of the Hubble parameter goes up from 2.6$\sigma$ with Planck to 2.9$\sigma$ with Planck+SPT-3G 2018. The additional inclusion of ACT DR4 data leads to a reduction of the tension to $1.6\sigma$, but the discrepancy between ACT DR4 and Planck+SPT-3G 2018 casts some doubt on the statistical consistency of this joint analysis. The importance of improved measurements of the CMB at both intermediate and small scales (in particular the shape of the damping tail) as well as the interplay between temperature and polarization measurements in constraining EDE are discussed. In this work, we explore the possibility that Early Dark Energy (EDE) is dynamical in nature and study its effect on cosmological observables. We introduce a parameterization of the equation of state allowing for an equation of state $w$ differing considerably from cosmological constant (cc, $w={-1}$) and vary both the initial $w_i$ as well final $w_f$ equation of state of the EDE fluid. This idea is motivated by the fact that in many models of EDE, the scalar field may have some kinetic energy when it starts to behave like EDE before the CMB decoupling. We find that the present data have a mild preference for non-cc early dark energy $( w_i= -0.78)$ using Planck+BAO+Pantheon+S$H_0$ES data sets, leading to $\Delta \chi^2_{\rm min}$ improvement of -2.5 at the expense of one more parameter. However, $w_i$ is only weakly constrained, with $w_i < -0.56$ at $1\sigma$. We argue that allowing for $w_i\neq -1$ can play a role in decreasing the $\sigma_8$ parameter. Yet, in practice the decrease is only $\sim0.4\sigma$ and $\sigma_8$ is still larger than weak lensing measurements. We consider a model of early modified gravity (EMG) that was recently proposed as a candidate to resolve the Hubble tension. The model consists in a scalar field $\sigma$ with a non-minimal coupling (NMC) to the Ricci curvature of the form $F(\sigma) = M_{\mathrm{pl}}^2+\xi\sigma^2$ and an effective mass induced by a quartic potential $V(\sigma) = \lambda \sigma^4/4$. We present the first analyses of the EMG model in light of the latest ACT DR4 and SPT-3G data in combination with full Planck data, and find a $\gtrsim 2\sigma$ preference for a non-zero EMG contribution from a combination of primary CMB data alone, mostly driven by ACT DR4 data. This is different from popular 'Early Dark Energy' models, which are detected only when the high-$\ell$ information from Planck temperature is removed. We find that the NMC plays a key role in controlling the evolution of density perturbations that is favored by the data over the minimally coupled case. Including measurements of supernovae luminosity distance from Pantheon+, baryonic acoustic oscillations and growth factor from BOSS, and CMB lensing of Planck leaves the preference unaffected. In the EMG model, the tension with S$H_0$ES is alleviated from $\sim 6\sigma$ to $\sim 3\sigma$. We review the current status of Early Dark Energy (EDE) models proposed to resolve the "Hubble tension", the discrepancy between "direct" measurements of the current expansion rate of the Universe and "indirect measurements" for which the values inferred rely on the $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model calibrated on early-universe data. EDE refers to a new form of dark energy active at early times (typically a scalar-field), that quickly dilutes away at a redshift close to matter-radiation equality. The role of EDE is to decrease the sound horizon by briefly contributing to the Hubble rate in the pre-recombination era. We summarize the results of several analyses of EDE models suggested thus far in light of recent cosmological data, including constraints from the canonical {\it Planck} data, baryonic acoustic oscillations and Type Ia supernovae, and the more recent hints driven by cosmic microwave background observations using the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. We also discuss potential challenges to EDE models, from theoretical ones (a second "cosmic coincidence" problem in particular) to observational ones, related to the amplitude of clustering on scales of $8h$/Mpc as measured by weak-lensing observables (the so-called $S_8$ tension) and the galaxy power spectrum from BOSS analyzed through the effective field theory of large-scale structure. We end by reviewing recent attempts at addressing these shortcomings of the EDE proposal. While current data remain inconclusive on the existence of an EDE phase, we stress that given the signatures of EDE models imprinted in the CMB and matter power spectra, next-generation experiments can firmly establish whether EDE is the mechanism responsible for the Hubble tension and distinguish between the various models suggested in the literature., Comment: 48 + 3 pages, 30 + 3 figures. We construct data-driven solutions to the Hubble tension which are perturbative modifications to the fiducial $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, using the Fisher bias formalism. Taking as proof of principle the case of a time-varying electron mass and fine structure constant, and focusing first on Planck CMB data, we demonstrate that a modified recombination can solve the Hubble tension and lower $S_8$ to match weak lensing measurements. In [arXiv:2204.13980], we proposed and motivated a modification of the Einstein equation as a function of the topology of the Universe in the form of a bi-connection theory. The new equation features an additional "topological term" related to a second non-dynamical reference connection and chosen as a function of the spacetime topology. In the present paper, we analyse the consequences for cosmology of this modification. First, we show that expansion becomes blind to the spatial curvature in this new theory, i.e. the expansion laws do not feature the spatial curvature parameter anymore (i.e. $\Omega_{\not= K} = 1, \ \forall \, \Omega_K$), while this curvature is still present in the evaluation of distances. Second, we derive the first order perturbations of this homogeneous solution. Two additional gauge invariant variables coming from the reference connection are present compared with general relativity: a scalar and a vector mode, both sourced by the shear of the cosmic fluid. Finally, we confront this model with observations. The differences with the $\Lambda$CDM model are negligible, in particular, the Hubble and curvature tensions are still present. Nevertheless, since the main difference between the two models is the influence of the background spatial curvature on the dynamics, an increased precision on the measure of that parameter might allow us to observationally distinguish them., Comment: 22+4 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables. We present cosmological results inferred from the effective-field theory (EFT) analysis of the full-shape of eBOSS quasars (QSO) power spectrum. We validate our analysis pipeline against simulations, and find overall good agreement between the analyses in Fourier and configuration space. Keeping the baryon abundance and the spectral tilt fixed, we reconstruct at $68\%$ CL the fractional matter abundance $\Omega_m$, the reduced Hubble constant $h$, and the clustering amplitude $\sigma_8$, to respectively $\Omega_m=0.327\pm 0.035$, $h=0.655\pm 0.034$, and $\sigma_8=0.880\pm 0.083$ from eBOSS QSO alone. These constraints are consistent at $\lesssim 1.8\sigma$ with the ones from Planck and from the EFT analysis of BOSS full-shape. Interestingly $S_8$ reconstructed from eBOSS QSO is slightly higher than that deduced from Planck and BOSS, although statistically consistent. In combination with the EFT likelihood of BOSS, supernovae from Pantheon, and BAO from lyman-$\alpha$ and 6dF/MGS, constraints improve to $\Omega_m = 0.2985\pm 0.0069$ and $h = 0.6803\pm 0.0075$, in agreement with Planck and with similar precision. We also explore one-parameter extensions to $\Lambda$CDM and find that results are consistent with flat $\Lambda$CDM at $\lesssim 1.3\sigma$. We obtain competitive constraints on the curvature density fraction $\Omega_k=-0.039\pm 0.029$, the dark energy equation of state $w_0=-1.038\pm 0.041$, the effective number of relativistic species $N_{\rm eff}=3.44^{+0.44}_{-0.91}$ at $68\%$ CL, and the sum of neutrino masses $\sum m_\nu<0.274e$V at $95\%$ CL, without Planck data. Including Planck data, contraints significantly improve thanks to the large lever arm in redshift between LSS and CMB measurements. Measurements of weak gravitational lensing at low redshifts ($z\lesssim 0.5-1$), quantified by the parameter $S_8$, favor weaker matter clustering than that expected from the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model with parameters determined by cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements. However, the amplitude of matter clustering at higher redshifts, as probed by lensing of the CMB, is consistent with $\Lambda$CDM. This apparent paradox suggests a connection between the $S_8$ tension and the transition from matter to dark-energy domination. Here we show that the tension can be resolved by introducing a friction between dark matter and dark energy without altering the tightly constrained expansion history. The low-$S_8$ measurements favor (at $\gtrsim3\sigma$, in this one parameter model) a non-zero drag leading to a suppression of low-redshift power right around the transition from matter to dark-energy domination. The Hubble tension can be addressed by modifying the sound horizon ($r_s$) before recombination, triggering interest in $r_s$-free early-universe estimates of the Hubble constant, $H_0$. Constraints on $H_0$ from an $r_s$-free analysis of the full shape BOSS galaxy power spectra within LCDM were recently reported and used to comment on the viability of physics beyond LCDM. Here we demonstrate that $r_s$-free analyses with current data depend on the model and the priors placed on the cosmological parameters, such that LCDM analyses cannot be used as evidence for or against new physics. We find that beyond-LCDM models which introduce additional energy density with significant pressure support, such as early dark energy (EDE) or additional neutrino energy density ($\Delta N_{\rm eff}$), lead to larger values of $H_0$. On the other hand, models which only affect the time of recombination, such as a varying electron mass ($\Delta m_e$), produce $H_0$ constraints similar to LCDM. Using BOSS data, constraints from light element abundances, cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing, a CMB-based prior on the scalar amplitude ($A_s$), spectral index ($n_s$), and $\Omega_m$ from the Pantheon+ supernovae data set, we find that in LCDM, $H_0=64.9\pm 2.2$ km/s/Mpc; EDE, $H_0=68.7^{+3}_{-3.9}$; $\Delta N_{\rm eff}$, $H_0=68.1^{+2.7}_{-3.8}$; $\Delta m_e$, $H_0=64.7^{+1.9}_{-2.3}$. Using a prior on $\Omega_m$ from uncalibrated BAO and CMB measurements of the projected sound horizon, these values become in LCDM, $H_0=68.8^{+1.8}_{-2.1}$; EDE, $H_0=73.7^{+3.2}_{-3.9}$; $\Delta N_{\rm eff}$, $H_0=72.6^{+2.8}_{-3.7}$; $\Delta m_e$, $H_0=68.8\pm 1.9$. With current data, none of the models are in significant tension with SH0ES, and consistency tests based on comparing $H_0$ posteriors with and without $r_s$ marginalization are inconclusive with respect to the viability of beyond LCDM models., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, comments welcome

We assess the robustness of $\Lambda$CDM results from the full-shape analysis of BOSS power spectrum using the one-loop prediction of the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS). The public likelihoods PyBird and CLASS-PT lead to results in agreement only at the $1\sigma$ level, despite the fact that they are derived from the same BOSS dataset and theory model. We perform a thorough comparison of the various analyses choices made between the two pipelines, and identify that the differences come from the choice of prior on the EFT parameters, dubbed "West-coast" (WC) and "East-coast" (EC) prior, respectively associated to PyBird and CLASS-PT. In particular, because posteriors are non-Gaussian, projection effects from the marginalization over the EFT parameters shift the posterior mean of the cosmological parameters with respect to the best-fit up to $1\sigma$ in the WC prior and up to $2\sigma$ in the EC prior. We quantify that best-fit cosmological parameters extracted from BOSS given the two prior choices are consistent at $\sim 1\sigma$. The consistency improves to $\sim 0.5\sigma$ when doubling the prior widths. While this reveals that current EFT analyses are subject to prior effects, we show that cosmological results obtained in combination with CMB, or from forthcoming large-volume data, are less sensitive to those effects. In addition, we investigate differences between BOSS measurements. We find broad agreements across all pre-reconstructed measurements considered ($<0.6\sigma$), but the two available BOSS post-reconstructed measurements in Fourier space, once combined with the EFT full-shape analysis, lead to discrepant Hubble parameter $H_0$ at $\sim 0.9\sigma$. Given the various effects we discuss, we argue that the clustering amplitude $\sigma_8$ measured with BOSS is not in statistical tension with that inferred from Planck under $\Lambda$CDM., Comment: 17 + 7 pages, 10 figures. Analyses of the full shape of BOSS DR12 power spectrum using the one-loop prediction from the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTBOSS) have led to new constraints on extensions to the $\Lambda$CDM model, such as Early Dark Energy (EDE) which has been suggested as a resolution to the "Hubble tension". In this paper, we re-assess the constraining power of the EFTBOSS on EDE in light of a correction to the normalization of BOSS window functions. Overall we find that constraints from EFTBOSS on EDE are weakened, and represent a small change compared to constraints from Planck and the conventional BAO/$f\sigma_8$ measurements. The combination of Planck data with EFTBOSS provides a bound on the maximal fractional contribution of EDE $f_{\rm EDE}<0.083$ at 95% C.L. (compared to $<0.054$ with the incorrect normalization, and $<0.088$ without full-shape data) and the Hubble tension is reduced to $2.1\sigma$. However, the more extreme model favored by an analysis with just data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope is disfavored by the EFTBOSS data. We also show that the updated Pantheon+ Type Ia supernova analysis can slightly increase the constraints on EDE. Yet, the inclusion of the SN1a magnitude calibration by SH0ES strongly increases the preference for EDE to above $5\sigma$, yielding $f_{\rm EDE}\sim 0.12^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$ around the redshift $z_c=4365^{+3000}_{-1100}$. We update cosmological constraints on two decaying dark matter models in light of BOSS-DR12 data analyzed under the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structures (EFTofLSS) formalism, together with Planck, Pantheon and other BOSS measurements of the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO). In the first model, a fraction $f_{\rm dcdm}$ of cold dark matter (CDM) decays into dark radiation (DR) with a lifetime $\tau$. In the second model (recently suggested as a potential resolution to the $S_8$ tension), all the CDM decays with a lifetime $\tau$ into DR and a massive warm dark matter (WDM) particle, with a fraction $\varepsilon$ of the CDM rest mass energy transferred to the DR. Using numerical codes from the recent literature, we perform the first calculation of the mildly non-linear (matter and galaxy) power spectra with the EFTofLSS for these two models. In the case of DR products, we obtain the constraints $f_{\rm dcdm}\lesssim0.022$ (95\% C.L.) for lifetimes shorter than the age of the universe, and $\tau/f_{\rm dcdm} \gtrsim 250$ Gyr in the long-lived regime assuming $f_{\rm dcdm}\to1$. We show that Planck data contributes the most to these constraints, with EFTofBOSS providing a marginal improvement over conventional BAO and redshift space distortions ($f\sigma_8$) data. In the case of DR and WDM decay products, we find that EFTofBOSS data significantly improves the constraints at 68\% C.L. on the CDM lifetime with a $S_8$ prior from KiDS-1000. We show that, in order to fit EFTofBOSS data while lowering $S_8$ to match KiDS-1000, the best-fit model has a longer lifetime $\tau = 120$ Gyr, with a larger kick velocity $v_{\rm kick}/c \simeq \varepsilon \simeq 1.2\%$, than that without EFTofBOSS ($\tau = 43$ Gyr, $\varepsilon =0.6\%$). Theoretical investigations into the evolution of the early universe are an essential part of particle physics that allow us to identify viable extensions to the Standard Model as well as motivated parameter space that can be probed by various experiments and observations. In this white paper, we review particle physics models of the early universe. First, we outline various models that explain two essential ingredients of the early universe (dark matter and baryon asymmetry) and those that seek to address current observational anomalies. We then discuss dynamics of the early universe in models of neutrino masses, axions, and several solutions to the electroweak hierarchy problem. Finally, we review solutions to naturalness problems of the Standard Model that employ cosmological dynamics., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. We investigate constraints on early dark energy (EDE) using ACT DR4, SPT-3G 2018, Planck polarization, and restricted Planck temperature data (at $\ell<650$), finding a $3.3\sigma$ preference ($\Delta\chi^2=-16.2$ for 3 additional degrees of freedom) for EDE over $\Lambda$CDM. The EDE contributes a maximum fractional energy density of $f_{\rm EDE}(z_c)=0.163^{+0.047}_{-0.04}$ at a redshift $z_c=3357\pm200$ and leads to a CMB inferred value of the Hubble constant $H_0=74.2^{+1.9}_{-2.1}$ km/s/Mpc. We find that Planck and ACT DR4 data provide the majority of the improvement in $\chi^2$, and that the inclusion of SPT-3G pulls the posterior of $f_{\rm EDE}(z_c)$ away from $\Lambda$CDM. This is the first time that a moderate preference for EDE has been reported for these three combined CMB data sets. We find that including measurements of supernovae luminosity distances and the baryon acoustic oscillation standard ruler only minimally affects the preference ($3.0\sigma$), while measurements that probe the clustering of matter at late times - the lensing potential power spectrum from Planck and $f \sigma_8$ from BOSS - decrease the significance of the preference to 2.6$\sigma$. Conversely, adding a prior on the $H_0$ value as reported by the SH0ES collaboration increases the preference to the $4-5\sigma$ level. In the absence of this prior, the inclusion of Planck TT data at $\ell>1300$ reduces the preference from $3.0\sigma$ to $2.3\sigma$ and the constraint on $f_{\rm EDE}(z_c)$ becomes compatible with $\Lambda$CDM at $1\sigma$. We explore whether systematic errors in the Planck polarization data may affect our conclusions and find that changing the TE polarization efficiencies significantly reduces the Planck preference for EDE. We present cosmological constraints on the sum of neutrino masses as a function of the neutrino lifetime, in a framework in which neutrinos decay into dark radiation after becoming non-relativistic. We find that in this regime the cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) and (uncalibrated) luminosity distance to supernovae from the Pantheon catalog constrain the sum of neutrino masses $\sum m_\nu$ to obey $\sum m_\nu< 0.42$ eV at (95$\%$ C.L.). While the the bound has improved significantly as compared to the limits on the same scenario from Planck 2015, it still represents a significant relaxation of the constraints as compared to the stable neutrino case. We show that most of the improvement can be traced to the more precise measurements of low-$\ell$ polarization data in Planck 2018, which leads to tighter constraints on $\tau_{\rm reio}$ (and thereby on $A_s$), breaking the degeneracy arising from the effect of (large) neutrino masses on the amplitude of the CMB power spectrum., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures. v2 matches published JHEP version. In this paper we fit two models of Early Dark Energy (EDE) (an increase in the expansion rate before recombination) to the combination of Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) with data from either the WMAP or the Planck satellite, along with measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillations and uncalibrated supernovae luminosity distance. We study a phenomenological axion-like potential ('axEDE') and a scalar field experiencing a first-order phase-transition ('NEDE'). We find that for both models the 'Planck-free' analysis yields non-zero EDE at > 2 sigma and an increased value for $H_0 \sim 70-74$ km/s/Mpc, compatible with local measurements, without the inclusion of any prior on $H_0$. On the other hand, the inclusion of Planck data restricts the EDE contribution to an upper-limit only at 95% C.L. For axEDE, the combination of Planck and ACT leads to constraints 30% weaker than with Planck alone, and there is no residual Hubble tension. On the other hand, NEDE is more strongly constrained in a Planck+ACT analysis, and the Hubble tension remains at $\sim 3\sigma$, illustrating the ability for CMB data to distinguish between EDE models. We explore the apparent inconsistency between the Planck and ACT data and find that it comes (mostly) from a slight tension between the temperature power spectrum at multipoles around $\sim 1000$ and $\sim 1500$. Finally, through a mock analysis of ACT data, we demonstrate that the preference for EDE is not driven by a lack of information at high-$\ell$ when removing Planck data, and that a LCDM fit to the fiducial EDE cosmology results in a significant bias on $\{H_0,\omega_{\rm cdm}\}$. Despite the remarkable success of the $\Lambda$Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) cosmological model, a growing discrepancy has emerged (currently measured at the level of $\sim 4-6 \sigma$) between the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ measured using the local distance ladder and the value inferred using the cosmic microwave background and galaxy surveys. While a vast array of $\Lambda$CDM extensions have been proposed to explain these discordant observations, understanding the (relative) success of these models in resolving the tension has proven difficult -- this is a direct consequence of the fact that each model has been subjected to differing, and typically incomplete, compilations of cosmological data. In this review, we attempt to make a systematic comparison of sixteen different models which have been proposed to resolve the $H_0$ tension (spanning both early- and late-Universe solutions), and quantify the relative success of each using a series of metrics and a vast array of data combinations. Owing to the timely appearance of this article, we refer to this contest as the ''$H_0$ Olympics''; the goal being to identify which of the proposed solutions, and more broadly which underlying mechanisms, are most likely to be responsible for explaining the observed discrepancy (should unaccounted for systematics not be the culprit). The $\Lambda$CDM prediction of $S_8\equiv\sigma_8(\Omega_m/0.3)^{0.5}$ -- where $\sigma_8$ is the root mean square of matter fluctuations on a 8 $h^{-1}$Mpc scale -- once calibrated on Planck CMB data is $2-3\sigma$ lower than its direct estimate by a number of weak lensing surveys. In this paper, we explore the possibility that the '$S_8$-tension' is due to a non-thermal hot dark matter (HDM) fractional contribution to the universe energy density leading to a power suppression at small-scales in the matter power spectrum. Any HDM models can be characterized by its effective mass $ m_{sp}^{\rm eff}$ and its contribution to the relativistic degrees of freedom at CMB decoupling $\Delta N_{\rm eff}$. Taking the specific example of a sterile particle produced from the decay of the inflaton during a matter dominated era, we find that from Planck only the tension can be reduced below $2\sigma$, but Planck does not favor a non-zero ${m_{sp}^{\rm eff},\Delta N_{\rm eff}}$. In combination with a measurement of $S_8$ from KIDS1000+BOSS+2dfLenS, the $S_8$-tension would hint at the existence of a particle of mass $ m_{sp}^{\rm eff} \simeq 0.67_{-0.48}^{+0.26}$ ${\rm eV}$ with a contribution to $\Delta N_{\rm eff} \simeq0.06\pm0.05$. However, Pantheon and BOSS BAO/$f\sigma_8$ data restricts the particle mass to $m_{sp}^{\rm eff} \simeq 0.48_{-0.36}^{+0.17}$ and contribution to $\Delta N_{\rm eff} \simeq 0.046_{-0.031}^{+0.004}$. We discuss implications of our results for other canonical non-thermal HDM models -- the Dodelson-Widrow model and a thermal sterile particle with a different temperature in the hidden sector. The '$S_8$ tension' is a longstanding discrepancy between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and weak gravitational lensing determination of the amplitude of matter fluctuations, parametrized as $S_8\equiv\sigma_8(\Omega_m/0.3)^{0.5}$, where $\sigma_8$ is the root mean square of matter fluctuations on a 8 $h^{-1}$Mpc scale, and $\Omega_m$ is the total matter abundance. It was recently shown that dark matter (DM) decaying into a massless (dark radiation) and a massive (warm DM) species, with a lifetime $\Gamma^{-1} \simeq 55~(\varepsilon/0.007)^{1.4}$ Gyrs -- where $\varepsilon$ represent the mass-energy fraction transferred to the massless component -- can ease the tension. Thanks to a fast and accurate fluid approximation scheme for the warm species, we perform a comprehensive study of this 2-body decaying DM scenario, discussing in detail its dynamics and its impact on the CMB and linear matter power spectra. We then investigate the implications for the '$S_8$ tension' against a number of changes in the analysis: different $S_8$ priors, marginalization over the lensing information in Planck data, trading Planck high$-\ell$ polarization data for those from the SPTpol and ACTPol surveys, and the inclusion of the recent results from the Xenon1T collaboration. We conclude that the preference for decaying DM, apparent only when the $S_8$ value determined from weak lensing data is added to the analysis, does not sensibly degrade the fit to any of the cosmological data-sets considered, and that the model could potentially explain the anomalous electron recoil excess reported by the Xenon1T collaboration. Furthermore, we explictly show that while current CMB data alone are not sensitive enough to distinguish between standard CDM and decaying DM, next-generation CMB observations (CMB-S4) can unambiguously detect its signature., Comment: 18+7 pages, 19 figures. We revisit the impact of early dark energy (EDE) on galaxy clustering using BOSS galaxy power spectra, analyzed using the effective field theory (EFT) of large-scale structure (LSS), and anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from Planck. Recent studies found that these data place stringent constraints on the maximum abundance of EDE allowed in the Universe. We argue here that their conclusions are a consequence of their choice of priors on the EDE parameter space, rather than any disagreement between the data and the model. For example, when considering EFT-LSS, CMB, and high-redshift supernovae data we find the EDE and $\Lambda$CDM models can provide statistically indistinguishable fits ($\Delta \chi^2 = 0.12$) with a relatively large value for the maximum fraction of energy density in the EDE ($f_{\rm ede} = 0.09$) and Hubble constant ($H_0 = 71$ km/s/Mpc) in the EDE model. Moreover, we demonstrate that the constraining power added from the inclusion of EFT-LSS traces to the potential tension between the power-spectrum amplitudes $A_s$ derived from BOSS and from Planck that arises even within the context of $\Lambda$CDM. Until this is better understood, caution should be used when interpreting EFT-BOSS+Planck constraints to models beyond $\Lambda$CDM. Early Dark Energy (EDE) contributing a fraction $f_{\rm EDE}(z_c)\sim 10 \%$ of the energy density of the universe around $z_c\simeq 3500$ and diluting as or faster than radiation afterwards, can provide a resolution to the Hubble tension, the $\sim 5\sigma$ discrepancy between the $H_0$ value derived from early- and late-universe observations within $\Lambda$CDM. However, it has been pointed out that Large-Scale Structure (LSS) data, which are in $\sim3\sigma$ tension with $\Lambda$CDM and EDE cosmologies, might alter these conclusions. We reassess the viability of the EDE against a host of high- and low-redshift measurements, by combining LSS observations from recent weak lensing (WL) surveys with CMB, Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO), growth function (FS) and Supernova Ia (SNIa) data. Introducing a model whose only parameter is $f_{\rm EDE}(z_c)$, we report a $\sim 2\sigma$ preference for non-zero $f_{\rm EDE}(z_c)$ from Planck data alone and the tension with SH0ES is reduced below $2\sigma$. Adding BAO, FS and SNIa does not affect this result, while the inclusion of a prior on $H_0$ from SH0ES increase the preference for non-zero EDE to $\sim3.6\sigma$. After checking the EDE non-linear matter power spectrum predicted by standard semi-analytical algorithms via a set of $N$-body simulations, we show that current WL data do not rule out EDE. We also caution against the interpretation of constraints obtained from combining statistically inconsistent data sets within the $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. In light of the CMB lensing anomalies, we show that the lensing-marginalized CMB data also favor non-zero $f_{\rm EDE}(z_c)$ at $\sim2\sigma$, predicts $H_0$ in $1.4\sigma$ agreement with SH0ES and $S_8$ in $1.5\sigma$ ($0.8\sigma$) agreement with KV (DES) data. A precise measurement of the curvature of the Universe is of primeval importance for cosmology since it could not only confirm the paradigm of primordial inflation but also help in discriminating between different early Universe scenarios. The recent observations, while broadly consistent with a spatially flat standard $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, are showing tensions that still allow (and, in some cases, even suggest) a few percent deviations from a flat universe. In particular, the Planck Cosmic Microwave Background power spectra, assuming the nominal likelihood, prefer a closed universe at more than 99\% confidence level. Recent weak lensing surveys have revealed that the direct measurement of the parameter combination $S_8\equiv\sigma_8(\Omega_m/0.3)^{0.5}$ -- where $\sigma_8$ is a measure of the amplitude of matter fluctuations on 8 $h^{-1}$Mpc scales -- is $\sim3\sigma$ discrepant with the value reconstructed from cosmic microwave background (CMB) data assuming the $\Lambda$CDM model. In this article, we show that it is possible to resolve the tension if dark matter (DM) decays with a lifetime of $\Gamma^{-1} \simeq 55 \ \text{Gyrs}$ into one massless and one massive product, and transfers a fraction $\varepsilon\simeq 0.7 \ \%$ of its rest mass energy to the massless component. The velocity-kick received by the massive daughter leads to a suppression of gravitational clustering below its free-streaming length, thereby reducing the $\sigma_8$ value as compared to that inferred from the standard $\Lambda$CDM model, in a similar fashion to massive neutrino and standard warm DM. Contrarily to the latter scenarios, the time-dependence of the power suppression and the free-streaming scale allows the 2-body decaying DM scenario to accommodate CMB, baryon acoustic oscillation, growth factor and un-calibrated supernova Ia data. We briefly discuss implications for DM model building, galactic small-scale structure problems and the recent Xenon-1T excess. The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) depends on the complex astrophysics governing the birth and evolution of the first galaxies and structures in the intergalactic medium. EoR models rely on cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations, and in particular the large-scale E-mode polarization power spectra (EE PS), to help constrain their highly uncertain parameters. However, rather than directly forward-modelling the EE PS, most EoR models are constrained using a summary statistic -- the Thompson scattering optical depth, $\tau_e$. Compressing CMB observations to $\tau_e$ requires adopting a basis set for the EoR history. The common choice is the unphysical, redshift-symmetric hyperbolic tangent (Tanh) function, which differs in shape from physical EoR models based on hierarchical structure formation. Combining public EoR and CMB codes, 21cmFAST and CLASS, here we quantify how inference using the $\tau_e$ summary statistic impacts the resulting constraints on galaxy properties and EoR histories. Using the last Planck 2018 data release, we show that the marginalized constraints on the EoR history are more sensitive to the choice of the basis set (Tanh vs physical model) than to the CMB likelihood statistic ($\tau_e$ vs PS). For example, EoR histories implied by the growth of structure show a small tail of partial reionization extending to higher redshifts. However, biases in inference using $\tau_e$ are negligible for the Planck 2018 data. It is commonly assumed that the energy density of the Universe was dominated by radiation between reheating after inflation and the onset of matter domination 54,000 years later. While the abundance of light elements indicates that the Universe was radiation dominated during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), there is scant evidence that the Universe was radiation dominated prior to BBN. It is therefore possible that the cosmological history was more complicated, with deviations from the standard radiation domination during the earliest epochs. Indeed, several interesting proposals regarding various topics such as the generation of dark matter, matter-antimatter asymmetry, gravitational waves, primordial black holes, or microhalos during a nonstandard expansion phase have been recently made. LCDM cosmological models with Early Dark Energy (EDE) have been proposed to resolve tensions between the Hubble constant H0 = 100h km/s/Mpc measured locally, giving h ~ 0.73, and H0 deduced from Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) and other early universe measurements plus LCDM, giving h ~ 0.67. EDE models do this by adding a scalar field that temporarily adds dark energy equal to about 10% of the cosmological energy density at the end of the radiation-dominated era at redshift z ~ 3500. Here we compare linear and nonlinear predictions of a Planck-normalized LCDM model including EDE giving h = 0.728 with those of standard Planck-normalized LCDM with h = 0.678. We find that nonlinear evolution reduces the differences between power spectra of fluctuations at low redshifts. As a result, at z = 0 the halo mass functions on galactic scales are nearly the same, with differences only 1-2%. However, the differences dramatically increase at high redshifts. The EDE model predicts 50% more massive clusters at z = 1 and twice more galaxy-mass halos at z = 4. Even greater increases in abundances of galaxy-mass halos at higher redshifts may make it easier to reionize the universe with EDE. Predicted galaxy abundances and clustering will soon be tested by JWST observations. Positions of baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAOs) and correlation functions differ by about 2% between the models -- an effect that is not washed out by nonlinearities. Dark photon dark matter will resonantly convert into visible photons when the dark photon mass is equal to the plasma frequency of the ambient medium. In cosmological contexts, this transition leads to an extremely efficient, albeit short-lived, heating of the surrounding gas. Existing work in this field has been predominantly focused on understanding the implications of these resonant transitions in the limit that the plasma frequency of the Universe can be treated as being perfectly homogeneous, \ie neglecting inhomogeneities in the electron number density. In this work we focus on the implications of heating from dark photon dark matter in the presence of inhomogeneous structure (which is particularly relevant for dark photons with masses in the range $10^{-15} \, {\rm eV} \, \lesssim m_{A^\prime} \lesssim 10^{-12}$ eV), emphasizing both the importance of inhomogeneous energy injection, as well as the sensitivity of cosmological observations to the inhomogeneities themselves. More specifically, we derive modified constraints on dark photon dark matter from the Ly-$\alpha$ forest, and show that the presence of inhomogeneities allows one to extend constraints to masses outside of the range that would be obtainable in the homogeneous limit, while only slightly relaxing their strength. We then project sensitivity for near-future cosmological surveys that are hoping to measure the 21cm transition in neutral hydrogen prior to reionization, and demonstrate that these experiments will be extremely useful in improving sensitivity to masses near $\sim 10^{-14}$ eV, potentially by several orders of magnitude. Even if massive ($10\,M_\odot \lesssim M \lesssim 10^4 M_\odot$) primordial black holes (PBHs) can only account for a small fraction of the dark matter (DM) in the universe, they may still be responsible for a sizable fraction of the coalescence events measured by LIGO/Virgo, and/or act as progenitors of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) observed already at high redshift ($z\gtrsim 6$). In presence of a dominant, non-PBH DM component, the bounds set by CMB via an altered ionization history are modified. We revisit the cosmological accretion of a DM halo around PBHs via toy models and dedicated numerical simulations, deriving updated CMB bounds which also take into account the last Planck data release. We prove that these constraints dominate over other constraints available in the literature at masses $M\gtrsim 20-50\,M_\odot$ (depending on uncertainty in accretion physics), reaching the level $f_{\rm PBH}<3\times 10^{-9}$ around $M\sim 10^{4}\,M_\odot$. We explore the cosmological signals of theories in which the neutrinos decay into invisible dark radiation after becoming non-relativistic. We show that in this scenario, near-future large scale structure measurements from the Euclid satellite, when combined with cosmic microwave background data from Planck, may allow an independent determination of both the lifetime of the neutrinos and the sum of their masses. These parameters can be independently determined because the Euclid data will cover a range of redshifts, allowing the growth of structure over time to be tracked. If neutrinos are stable on cosmological timescales, these observations can improve the lower limit on the neutrino lifetime by seven orders of magnitude, from $\mathcal{O}(10)$ years to $2\times 10^8$ years ($95\%$ C.L.), without significantly affecting the measurement of neutrino mass. On the other hand, if neutrinos decay after becoming non-relativistic but on timescales less than $\mathcal{O}(100)$ million years, these observations may allow, not just the first measurement of the sum of neutrino masses, but also the determination of the neutrino lifetime from cosmology., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

At present, the strongest upper limit on $\sum m_{\nu}$, the sum of neutrino masses, is from cosmological measurements. However, this bound assumes that the neutrinos are stable on cosmological timescales, and is not valid if the neutrino lifetime is less than the age of the universe. In this paper, we explore the cosmological signals of theories in which the neutrinos decay into invisible dark radiation on timescales of order the age of the universe, and determine the bound on the sum of neutrino masses in this scenario. We focus on the case in which the neutrinos decay after becoming non-relativistic. We derive the Boltzmann equations that govern the cosmological evolution of density perturbations in the case of unstable neutrinos, and solve them numerically to determine the effects on the matter power spectrum and lensing of the cosmic microwave background. We find that the results admit a simple analytic understanding. We then use these results to perform a Monte Carlo analysis based on the current data to determine the limit on the sum of neutrino masses as a function of the neutrino lifetime. We show that in the case of decaying neutrinos, values of $\sum m_{\nu}$ as large as 0.9 eV are still allowed by the data. We present a detailed investigation of a sub-dominant oscillating scalar field ('early dark energy', EDE) in the context of resolving the Hubble tension. Consistent with earlier work, but without relying on fluid approximations, we find that a scalar field frozen due to Hubble friction until ${\rm log}_{10}(z_c)\sim3.5$, reaching $\rho_{\rm EDE}(z_c)/\rho_{\rm tot}\sim10$%, and diluting faster than matter afterwards can bring cosmic microwave background (CMB), baryonic acoustic oscillations, supernovae luminosity distances, and the late-time estimate of the Hubble constant from the SH0ES collaboration into agreement. A scalar field potential which scales as $V(\phi) \propto \phi^{2n}$ with $2\lesssim n\lesssim 3.4$ around the minimum is preferred at the 68% confidence level, and the {\em Planck} polarization places additional constraints on the dynamics of perturbations in the scalar field. In particular, the data prefers a potential which flattens at large field displacements. An MCMC analysis of mock data shows that the next-generation CMB observations (i.e., CMB-S4) can unambiguously detect the presence of the EDE at very high significance. This projected sensitivity to the EDE dynamics is mainly driven by improved measurements of the $E$-mode polarization. We also explore new observational signatures of EDE scalar field dynamics: (i) We find that depending on the strength of the tensor-to-scalar ratio, the presence of the EDE might imply the existence of isocurvature perturbations in the CMB. (ii) We show that a strikingly rapid, scale-dependent growth of EDE field perturbations can result from parametric resonance driven by the anharmonic oscillating field for $n\approx 2$. The axion is a hypothetical, well-motivated dark-matter particle whose existence would explain the lack of charge-parity violation in the strong interaction. In addition to this original motivation, an `axiverse' of ultra-light axions (ULAs) with masses $10^{-33}\,{\rm eV}\lesssim m_{\rm a}\lesssim 10^{-10}\,{\rm eV}$ also emerges from string theory. Depending on the mass, such a ULA contributes to the dark-matter density, or alternatively, behaves like dark energy. At these masses, ULAs' classical wave-like properties are astronomically manifested, potentially mitigating observational tensions within the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm on local-group scales. ULAs also provide signatures on small scales such as suppression of structure, interference patterns and solitons to distinguish them from heavier dark matter candidates. This article aims at establishing new benchmark scenarios for Galactic cosmic-ray propagation in the GV-TV rigidity range, based on fits to the AMS-02 B/C data with the USINE v3.5 propagation code. We employ a new fitting procedure, cautiously taking into account data systematic error correlations in different rigidity bins and considering Solar modulation potential and leading nuclear cross-section as nuisance parameters. We delineate specific low, intermediate, and high-rigidity ranges that can be related to both features in the data and peculiar microphysics mechanisms resulting in spectral breaks. We single out a scenario which yields excellent fits to the data and includes all the presumably relevant complexity, the BIG model. This model has two limiting regimes: (i) the SLIM model, a minimal diffusion-only setup, and (ii) the QUAINT model, a convection-reacceleration model where transport is tuned by non-relativistic effects. All models lead to robust predictions in the high-energy regime ($\gtrsim10$GV), i.e. independent of the propagation scenario: at $1\sigma$, the diffusion slope $\delta$ is $[0.43-0.53]$, whereas $K_{10}$, the diffusion coefficient at 10GV, is $[0.26-0.36]$kpc$^2$Myr$^{-1}$; we confirm the robustness of the high-energy break, with a typical value $\Delta_h\sim 0.2$.
