14. Are the Results of the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (Third Edition) Predictive for Later Motor Skills and School Performance?

Abstract

Background/Objectives: The first year of life represents a critical developmental stage in which the foundations for motor, cognitive, language, and social–emotional development are set. During this time, development occurs rapidly, making early detection of developmental disorders essential for timely intervention. The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development—Third Edition (Bayley-III) is an effective tool for assessing language, motor, and cognitive development in children aged 1 to 42 months. This study aimed to investigate whether or not the results of the Bayley-III in healthy one-year-old children are predictive for their later motor skills and school performance. Methods: This study had a prospective, longitudinal design. The study participants were healthy children having performed Bayley-III at 1 year with information on motor performance (n = 170) at age 5–10 and school grades (n = 69) at age 7–10. Linear or logistic regression analysis was performed for data analysis. Results: Below-average performance in the cognitive part of the Bayley-III at age 1 was significantly associated with poorer performance in balancing backwards (b = −0.45), sideways jumping (b = −0.42), standing long jump (b = −0.54), and forward bends (b = −0.59) at age 5–10 (all p < 0.05). Performance in other parts of the Bayley-III was not significantly associated with later motor skills. Furthermore, we did not observe any significant associations between performance in the Bayley-III and grades in school. The associations were not moderated by age, sex, or socioeconomic status (all p > 0.05). Conclusions: The cognitive scale of the Bayley-III may be used as a predictive tool for later motor skills. 28. The Changing Role of Mothers' Verbal and Nonverbal Behavior in Children's Language Acquisition

Abstract

This study explores the developmental change of mother-child interactions in order to investigate which aspects of maternal behavior affect children's speech production. To this end, the interactions between 79 German-speaking mothers and their two- or five-year-old children were observed at two time points (12 months apart) and in two interactive settings (joint picture book reading and joint play with toy blocks). Measures were obtained for the speech (mean length of utterance) of mothers and children and the pointing behavior and prosody of mothers. The results suggest that mothers adapt their behavior to the advancing abilities of their children. Moreover, mothers' speech input was a significant predictor of children's speech production later in life. Interestingly, speech production of younger children was explained by the relatively simpler speech of mothers during joint play, whereas speech production of older children was explained by the relatively more complex speech of mothers during joint picture book reading. Mothers' nonverbal behavior, in contrast, did not predict children's speech production. Taken together, this study provides compelling evidence for the changing role of mothers' interactive behavior in supporting children's language production during development.

Abstract

Objectives: This study investigated associations between the use of electronic media and sleep in children and young adolescents, with a specific focus on the moderation of associations by sex and age. Methods: Between 2021 and 2022, 453 10- to 14-year-old children participating in the LIFE Child cohort study (Germany) reported on their use of electronic media (daily screen time, use at bedtime, device ownership) and on their sleep difficulties (Sleep Self Report). Associations between media use and sleep as well as interactions with age and sex were assessed using linear regression analyses. Results: The analyses revealed significant associations between the use of media at bedtime and bedtime problems (in girls only), sleep behavior problems (in girls only), and daytime sleepiness (in girls and boys). Daily screen time, in contrast, was associated with none of the sleep difficulties. The number of media devices owned by the child was only associated with bedtime problems in girls, and this association lost statistical significance once media use at bedtime was included as further predictor. Conclusion: The findings underline the potentially sleep-disturbing role of electronic media at bedtime. Furthermore, they suggest that this effect is more pronounced in girls than in boys. Abstract

Dietary glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) are associated with cardiome-tabolic health in children and adolescents, with potential distinct effects in people with increased BMI. DNA methylation (DNAm) may mediate these effects. Thus, we conducted meta-analyses of epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) between dietary GI and GL and blood DNAm of children and adolescents. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We calculated dietary GI and GL and performed EWAS in children and adolescents (age range: 4.5–17 years) from six cohorts (N = 1,187). We performed stratified analyses of participants with normal weight (n = 801) or overweight or obesity (n = 386). We performed look-ups for the identified cytosine–phosphate–guanine (CpG) sites (false discovery rate [FDR] < 0.05) with tissue-specific gene expression of 832 blood and 223 subcutaneous adipose tissue samples from children and adolescents. RESULTS Dietary GL was positively associated with DNAm of cg20274553 (FDR < 0.05), anno-tated to WDR27. Several CpGs were identified in the normal-weight (GI: 85; GL: 17) and overweight or obese (GI: 136; GL: 298; FDR < 0.05) strata, and none overlapped between strata. In participants with overweight or obesity, identified CpGs were related to RNA expression of genes associated with impaired metabolism (e.g., FRAT1, CSF3). CONCLUSIONS We identified 537 associations between dietary GI and GL and blood DNAm, mainly in children and adolescents with overweight or obesity. High-GI and/or-GL diets may influence epigenetic gene regulation and thereby promote metabolic derangements in young people with increased BMI.

48. Early child development and its determinants: Findings from a large cohort of healthy children growing up in a low‐risk environment.

Abstract

Background: Despite numerous studies on early child development, there is still much to be discovered about the significance of possible risk factors. This study examines cognitive, motor, and language development of healthy children growing up in a low‐risk environment and how various individual and environmental factors are associated with it. The study also considers whether the importance of particular parameters changes depending on child age. Methods: Within the framework of the LIFE Child study in Leipzig, Germany, 481 children participated in a total of 832 visits between 1 and 36 months of age. Developmental status was assessed using the Third Edition of the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development. Linear regression analyses were applied to examine the associations between child development and sex, gestational age, birth weight, birth mode, overweight, height, and parental education. Results: Mean Bayley composite scores for cognitive, language, and motor development were close to the standard value of 100. Poorer developmental outcomes were significantly associated with lower gestational age, vacuum cup/forceps birth, being overweight, small height, and lower parental education, although some of the associations became insignificant after applying multivariate models. While the association between gestational age and language development became weaker with advancing age, our interaction models found disparities related to parental education to become more apparent in older children across all three domains of early child development. Conclusions: Several factors were identified to be associated with early child development. As children grow older, obstetric parameters, for example, gestational age, might become less relevant compared with sociodemographic factors, for example, parental education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
