1. Basic aspects of the metal–insulator transition in vanadium dioxide VO$_{2}$: a critical review

Abstract

Vanadium dioxide exhibits a first order metal to insulator transition (MIT) at 340 K ($\mathrm{T}_{\mathrm{MI}}$) from a rutile (R) structure to a monoclinic ($\mathrm{M}_{1}$) structure. The mechanism of this transition interpreted as due either to a Peierls instability or to a Mott–Hubbard instability is controversial since half a century. However, in the last twenty years the study of chemical and physical properties of $\mathrm{VO}_{2}$ and of its alloys, benefits of a renewed interest due to possible applications coming from the realization of devices made of thin films. We describe in this review the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the different metallic (R) and insulating ($\mathrm{M}_{1}$, T, $\mathrm{M}_{2}$) phases of $\mathrm{VO}_{2}$, of its solid solutions and under constraint. We present in a synthetic manner the various phase diagrams and their symmetry analysis. This work allows us to revisit older interpretation and to emphasize in particular the combined role of electron–electron interactions in the various phase of $\mathrm{VO}_{2}$ and of structural fluctuations in the MIT mechanism. In this framework we show that the phase transition is surprisingly announced by anisotropic one-dimensional (1D) structural fluctuations revealing chain like correlations between the V due to an incipient instability of the rutile structure. This leads to an unexpected critical dynamics of the order–disorder (or relaxation) type. We describe how the two-dimensional (2D) coupling between these 1D fluctuations, locally forming uniform $\mathrm{V}^{4+}$ zig-zag chains and V–V pairs, stabilizes the $\mathrm{M}_{2}$ and $\mathrm{M}_{1}$ insulating phases. These phases exhibit a 1D electronic anisotropy where substantial electron–electron correlations conduct to a spin–charge decoupling. The spin-Peierls ground state of $\mathrm{M}_{1}$ is analyzed via a mechanism of dimerization, in the T phase, of the spin 1/2 $\mathrm{V}^{4+}$ zig-zag Heisenberg chains formed in the $\mathrm{M}_{2}$ phase. This review summarizes in a critical manner the main results of the large literature on fundamental aspects of the MIT of $\mathrm{VO}_{2}$. It is completed by unpublished old results. Interpretations are also placed in a large conceptual frame which is also relevant to interpret physical properties of other classes of materials.

4. Electron-hole response function of transition metal trichalcogenides NbSe$_3$ and monoclinic-TaS$_3$

Abstract

NbSe$_3$ and monoclinic-TaS$_3$ ($m$-TaS$_3$) are quasi-1D metals containing three different types of chains and undergoing two different charge density wave (CDW) Peierls transitions at T$_{P_1}$ and T$_{P_2}$. The nature of these transitions is discussed on the basis of first-principles DFT calculation of their electron-hole Lindhard response function. As a result of stronger inter-chain interactions the Fermi surface (FS) and Lindhard function of NbSe$_3$ are considerably more complex than those for $m$-TaS$_3$; however a common scenario can be put forward to rationalize the results. The intra-chain inter-band nesting processes dominate the strongest response for both type I and type III chains of the two compounds. Two well-defined maxima of the Lindhard response for NbSe$_3$ are found with the (0$a$*, 0$c$*) and (1/2$a$*, 1/2$c$*) transverse components at T$_{P_1}$ and T$_{P_2}$, respectively, whereas the second maximum is not observed for $m$-TaS$_3$ at T$_{P2}$. Analysis of the different inter-chain coupling mechanisms leads to the conclusion that FS nesting effects are only relevant to set the transverse $a$* components in NbSe$_3$. For the transverse coupling along $c$* in NbSe$_3$ and along both $a$* and $c$* for $m$-TaS$_3$, one must take into account the strongest inter-chain Coulomb coupling mechanism. Phonon spectrum calculations show the formation of a giant 2$k_F$ Kohn anomaly in $m$-TaS$_3$. All these results support the weak coupling scenario for the Peierls transition of transition metal trichalcogenides.

9. Probing the Ionic Dielectric Constant Contribution in the Ferroelectric Phase of the Fabre-Salts

Abstract

In strongly correlated organic materials it has been pointed out that charge-ordering could also achieve electronic ferroelectricity at the same critical temperature $T_{co}$. A prototype of such phenomenon are the quasi-one dimensional (TMTTF)$_2X$ Fabre-salts. However, the stabilization of a long-range ferroelectric ground-state below $T_{co}$ requires the break of inversion symmetry, which should be accompanied by a lattice deformation. In this work we investigate the role of the monovalent counter-anion $X$ in such mechanism. For this purpose, we measured the quasi-static dielectric constant along the $c^{*}$-axis direction, where layers formed by donors and anions alternate. Our findings show that the ionic charge contribution is three orders of magnitude lower than the intra-stack electronic response. The $c^{*}$ dielectric constant ($\epsilon'_{c^*}$) probes directly the charge response of the monovalent anion $X$, since the anion mobility in the structure should help to stabilize the ferroelectric ground-state. Furthermore, our $\epsilon'_{c^*}$ measurements %conjugated with earlier investigations of the $c^*$ lattice thermal expansion, show that the dielectric response is thermally broaden below $T_{co}$ if the ferroelectric transition occurs in the temperature range where the anion movement begin to freeze in their methyl groups cavity. In the extreme case of the PF$_6$-H$_{12}$ salt, where $T_{co}$ occurs at the freezing point, a relaxor-type ferroelectricity is observed. Also, because of the slow kinetics of the anion sub-lattice, global hysteresis effects and reduction of the charge response upon successive cycling are observed. In this context, we propose that anions control the order-disorder or relaxation character of the ferroelectric transition of the Fabre-salts., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

Charge-ordering phenomena have been highly topical over the last few years. A phase transition towards a charge ordered state has been observed experimentally in several classes of materials. Among them, many studies have been devoted to the family of quasi-one dimensional organic charge-transfer salts (TMTTF)$_2$X, where (TMTTF) stands for tetramethyltetrathiafulvalene and X for a monovalent anion (X = PF$_6$, AsF$_6$ and SbF$_6$). However, the relationship between the electron localization phenomena and the role of the lattice distortion in stabilizing the charge-ordering pattern is poorly documented in the literature. Here we present a brief overview of selected literature results with emphasis placed on recent thermal expansion experiments probing the charge-ordering transition of these salts., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures

22. Magneto-elastic coupling in the spin-Peierls ground state of hydrogenated and deuterated (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ salts

Abstract

We report an ultrasonic study of the magneto-elastic coupling of the hydrogenated and deuterated (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ organic salts. For both salts the temperature dependence of the longitudinal velocity along the c* axis displays a monotonic stiffening of the $C_{33}$ compressibility modulus upon cooling. Below the characteristic temperature scale 40 K the modulus stiffening becomes markedly enhanced, in concomitance with the reduction of spin degrees of freedom previously seen in magnetic measurements as low dimensional precursors of the spin-Peierls transition. The magneto-elastic coupling appears to be much weaker in the hydrogenated salt due to the highly inhomogeneous elastic behavior induced by the proximity of the charge ordering transition to the spin-Peierls phase. For the deuterated salt, an important anomaly in the ultrasound velocity is observed below the spin-Peierls transition temperature $T_{\rm SP}$ in agreement with scaling of the elastic deformation with the spin-Peierls order parameter. In spite of the weakly inhomogeneous character of the spin-Peierls phase transition, the magnetic field dependence of $T_{\rm SP}$ is well captured with the mean-field prediction for the lattice distorted Heisenberg spin chain., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Several experimental studies have shown the presence of spatially inhomogeneous phase coexistence of superconducting and non superconducting domains in low dimensional organic superconductors. The superconducting properties of these systems are found to be strongly dependent on the amount of disorder introduced in the sample regardless of its origin. The suppression of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ shows clear discrepancy with the result expected from the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law giving the behavior of $T_c$ with impurities. Based on the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we derive a model to account for the striking feature of $T_c$ in organic superconductors for different types of disorder by considering the segregated texture of the system. We show that the calculated $T_c$ quantitatively agrees with experiments. We also focus on the role of superconducting fluctuations on the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ of layered superconductors showing slab structure where superconducting domains are sandwiched by non-superconducting regions. Abstract

Using a combination of Density Functional Theory, mean-field analysis and exact diagonalization calculations we reveal the emergence of a dimerized charge ordered state in TMTTF$_2$-PF$_6$ organic crystal. The interplay between charge and spin order leads to a rich phase diagram. Coexistence of charge ordering with a structural dimerization results in a ferroelectric phase, which has been observed experimentally. The tendency to the dimerization is magnetically driven revealing TMTTF$_2$-PF$_6$ as a multiferroic material.

Abstract

We report results of high-resolution measurements of the \emph{c$^*$}-axis expansivity ($\alpha_{c^{*}}$) at the charge-ordering (CO) transition for the quasi-1D (TMTTF)$_{2}$X compounds with X = SbF$_6$ and Br and make a comparison with previous results for the X = PF$_6$ and AsF$_6$ salts. For X = SbF$_6$, due to the screening of the long-range Coulomb forces, a sharp $\lambda$-type anomaly is observed at $T_{CO}$, which contrasts with the step-like mean-field anomaly at $T_{CO}$ for PF$_6$ and AsF$_6$, where CO occurs in the Mott-Hubbard charge-localized regime. For the latter two salts, a negative contribution to $\alpha_{c^{*}}$ is observed above $T_{CO}$. This feature is assigned to the anions' rigid-unit modes, which become inactive for $T$ $<$ $T_{CO}$. Our $\alpha_{c^{*}}$ results for the X = Br salt, where such rigid-unit modes are absent, reveal no traces of such negative contribution, confirming the model based on the anions' rigid-unit modes for the X = PF$_6$ and AsF$_6$ salts., Comment: Submitted to Special Issue - ISCOM 2009 - Physica B Condensed Matter

Abstract

We report a study of the 16.5 GHz dielectric function of hydrogenated and deuterated organic salts (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$. The temperature behavior of the dielectric function is consistent with short-range polar order whose relaxation time decreases rapidly below the charge ordering temperature. If this transition has more a relaxor character in the hydrogenated salt, charge ordering is strengthened in the deuterated one where the transition temperature has increased by more than thirty percent. Anomalies in the dielectric function are also observed in the spin-Peierls ground state revealing some intricate lattice effects in a temperature range where both phases coexist. The variation of the spin-Peierls ordering temperature under magnetic field appears to follow a mean-field prediction despite the presence of spin-Peierls fluctuations over a very wide temperature range in the charge ordered state of these salts., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We comment a recent work titled "Direct evidence for hidden one-dimensional Fermi surface of hexagonal K0.25WO3". In this paper the authors report photoemission and theoretical results on the K0.25WO3 system which led them to propose that a Charge Density Wave (CDW), associated with hidden one-dimensional bands, was responsible for the well known resistivity anomaly in such system. In the present comment we report the results of a first principles density functional theory (DFT) study showing that there are no one-dimensional bands as suggested by these authors.

Abstract

The charge density wave (CDW) instability, usually occurring in low-dimensional metals, has been a topic of interest for longtime. However, some very fundamental aspects of the mechanism remain unclear. Recently, a plethora of new CDW materials, a substantial fraction of which is two-dimensional or even three-dimensional, has been prepared and characterised as bulk and/or single-layers. As a result, the need for revisiting the primary mechanism of the instability, based on the electron–hole instability established more than 50 years ago for quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) conductors, has clearly emerged. In this work, we consider a large number of CDW materials to revisit the main concepts used in understanding the CDW instability, and emphasise the key role of the momentum dependent electron–phonon coupling in linking electronic and structural degrees of freedom. We argue that for quasi-1D systems, earlier weak coupling theories work appropriately and the energy gain due to the CDW and the concomitant periodic lattice distortion (PLD) remains primarily due to a Fermi surface nesting mechanism. However, for materials with higher dimensionality, intermediate and strong coupling regimes are generally at work and the modification of the chemical bonding network by the PLD is at the heart of the instability. We emphasise the need for a microscopic approach blending condensed matter physics concepts and state-of-the-art first-principles calculations with quite fundamental chemical bonding ideas in understanding the CDW phenomenon in these materials.
