Introduction: Evolutionary theory suggests that the ancestors of all placental animals were nocturnal. Visual perceptive function of mammalian brain has evolved extensively, but nearly 70 % of today's mammals are still nocturnal. While placental influence on brain development is known, if placenta plays a role in the visual perceptive function of mammalian brain remains untested. The present study aims to test this hypothesis., Methods: In this study, single-nuclei RNA sequencing was performed to identify genes expressed in the pig placenta and fetal brain, and then compared with the orthologous genes expressed in the placenta and fetal brain cells of mouse. Differential gene expression analysis was performed to identify placental genes regulated differentially between nocturnal and diurnal animals. Phylogenetic modeling was performed to test correlated evolution between placenta type, and the nocturnal or diurnal activity among different mammals., Results: The results showed that genes differentially regulated in the fetal brain were related to visual perception whereas the placental genes were related to the nocturnal or diurnal activity in placental animals. The SARS-CoV-2 3CLpro is a critical target for COVID-19 therapeutics due to its role in viral replication. We employed a screening pipeline to identify novel inhibitors by combining machine learning classification with similarity checks of approved medications. A voting classifier, integrating three machine learning classifiers, was used to filter a large database (∼10 million compounds) for potential inhibitors. This ensemble-based machine learning technique enhances overall performance and robustness compared to individual classifiers. From the screening, three compounds M1, M2 and M3 were selected for further analysis. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) analysis compared these candidates to nirmatrelvir and azvudine. Molecular docking followed by 200 ns MD simulations showed that only M1 (6-[2,4-bis(dimethylamino)-6,8-dihydro-5 H -pyrido[3,4-d]pyrimidine-7-carbonyl]-1 H -pyrimidine-2,4-dione) remained stable. For azvudine and M1, the estimated median lethal doses are 1000 and 550 mg kg -1 , respectively, with maximum tolerated doses of 0.289 and 0.614 log mg per kg per day. The predicted inhibitory activity of M1 is 7.35, similar to that of nirmatrelvir. The binding free energy based on Molecular Mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area (MM-PBSA) of M1 is -18.86 ± 4.38 kcal mol -1 , indicating strong binding interactions. Polymorph engineering involves the manipulation of material properties through controlled structural modification and is a candidate technique for creating unique two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) nanodevices. Despite its promise, polymorph engineering of magnetic TMDC monolayers has not yet been demonstrated. Here we grow FeSe 2 monolayers via molecular beam epitaxy and find that they have great promise for magnetic polymorph engineering. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS), we find that FeSe 2 monolayers predominantly display a 1T' structural polymorph at 5 K. Application of voltage pulses from an STM tip causes a local, reversible transition from the 1T' phase to the 1T phase. Density functional theory calculations suggest that this single-layer structural phase transition is accompanied by a magnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic to a ferromagnetic configuration. These results open new possibilities for creating functional magnetic devices with TMDC monolayers via polymorph engineering.

This is an update of a previous review (Naumis et al 2017 Rep. Prog. Phys. 80 096501). Experimental and theoretical advances for straining graphene and other metallic, insulating, ferroelectric, ferroelastic, ferromagnetic and multiferroic 2D materials were considered. We surveyed (i) methods to induce valley and sublattice polarisation ( P ) in graphene, (ii) time-dependent strain and its impact on graphene's electronic properties, (iii) the role of local and global strain on superconductivity and other highly correlated and/or topological phases of graphene, (iv) inducing polarisation P on hexagonal boron nitride monolayers via strain, (v) modifying the optoelectronic properties of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers through strain, (vi) ferroic 2D materials with intrinsic elastic ( σ ), electric ( P ) and magnetic ( M ) polarisation under strain, as well as incipient 2D multiferroics and (vii) moiré bilayers exhibiting flat electronic bands and exotic quantum phase diagrams, and other bilayer or few-layer systems exhibiting ferroic orders tunable by rotations and shear strain. The update features the experimental realisations of a tunable two-dimensional Quantum Spin Hall effect in germanene, of elemental 2D ferroelectric bismuth, and 2D multiferroic NiI 2 . During 2015-2018, eight black carbon (BC) monitoring sites were established in Nepal and Bhutan to fill a significant data gap regarding BC measurement in Central Himalaya. This manuscript analyzes and presents data from these eight stations and one additional station on the Tibetan plateau (TP). Complex topography, varied emission sources, and atmospheric transport pathways significantly impacted the BC concentrations across these stations, with annual mean concentrations varying from 36 ng m -3 to 45,737 ng m -3 . Higher annual mean concentrations (5609 ± 4515 ng m -3 ) were recorded at low-altitude sites than in other locations, with seasonal concentrations highest in the winter (7316 ± 2541 ng m -3 ). In contrast, the annual mean concentrations were lowest at high-altitude sites (376 ± 448 ng m -3 ); the BC concentrations at these sites peaked during the pre-monsoon season (930 ± 685 ng m -3 ). Potential source contributions to the total observed BC were analyzed using the absorption angstrom exponent (AAE). AAE analysis showed the dominance of biomass burning sources (>50 %), except in Kathmandu. By combining our data with previously published literature, we put our measurements in perspective by presenting a comprehensive assessment of BC concentrations and their variability over the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region. The BC levels in all three geographic regions, high, mid, and low altitude significantly influenced by the persistent seasonal meteorology. However, the mid-altitude stations were substantially affected by valley dynamics and urbanization. The low-altitude stations experienced high BC concentrations during the winter and post-monsoon seasons. Concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) and frequency analyses revealed the dominance of long-range transported pollution during winter over HKH, from west to east. South Asian sources remained significant during the monsoon season. Traditional ferroelectrics undergo thermally induced phase transitions whereby their structural symmetry increases. The associated higher-symmetry structure is dubbed paraelectric . Ferroelectric transition-metal dichalcogenide bilayers have been recently shown to become paraelectric, but not much has been said of the atomistic configuration of such a phase. As discovered through numerical calculations that include molecular dynamics here, their paraelectricity can only be ascribed to a time average of ferroelectric phases with opposing intrinsic polarizations, whose switching requires macroscopically large areas to slip in unison.

Objective: Consultation length, the time spent between patient and health care provider during a visit, is an essential element in measuring quality of health care patients receive from a primary care facility. However, the linkage between consultation length and process quality and diagnosis quality of primary care is still uncertain. This study aims to examine the role consultation length plays in delivering process quality and diagnosis quality, two central components of overall primary care quality, in rural China., Methods: We recruited unannounced standardized patients (SPs) to present classic symptoms of angina and tuberculosis in selected healthcare facilities in three provinces of China. The consultation length and primary care quality of SPs were measured and compared with both international and national standards of care. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions for process quality (continuous dependent variable) and Logistic regressions for diagnosis quality (binary dependent variable) were performed to investigate the relationship between consultation length and primary care quality., Results: The average consultation lengths among patients with classic symptoms of angina and those with symptoms of tuberculosis were approximately 4.33 min and 6.28 min, respectively. Providers who spent more time with patients were significantly more likely to complete higher percentage of recommended checklist items of both questions and examinations for angina (β = 1.39, 95%CI 1.01-1.78) and tuberculosis (β = 0.89, 95%CI 0.69-1.08). Further, providers who spent more time with patients were more likely to make correct diagnosis for angina (marginal effect = 0.014, 95%CI 0.002-0.026) and for tuberculosis (marginal effect = 0.013, 95%CI 0.005-0.021)., Conclusions: The average consultation length is extremely short among primary care providers in rural China. The longer consultation leads to both better process and diagnosis quality of primary care., Practice Implications: We recommend primary care providers to increase the length of their communication with patients. To do so, government should implement healthcare reforms to clarify the requirements of affordable and reliable consultation length in medical care services. Objective: This study assesses the prevalence of childhood undernutrition from 2001 to 2016 and estimate projections of undernutrition for 2016-2030 in Nepal., Design: The study used data from four rounds of a cross-sectional survey of Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) conducted in 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016. Descriptive analyses were conducted to calculate prevalence, binary logistic regression was used to test the significance of trends over time and autoregressive integrated moving average model was used to forecast the prevalence of childhood undernutrition., Settings: The children and household member datasets from four NDHS were merged to assess the trends of childhood undernutrition in Nepal., Participants: A total of 16 613 children (8399 male and 8214 female) under 5 years of age were selected for anthropometric measurements using a stratified cluster random sampling method., Results: Overall results show a decline in prevalence of stunting from 57·2 % to 35·8 % (P < 0·001), underweight from 42·7 % to 27 % (P < 0·001) and wasting from 11·2 % to 9·7 % (P < 0·05) from 2001 to 2016. However, different population subgroups have a higher prevalence of undernutrition than national average. Further, the analyses show that the prevalence of stunting will decline to 14·3 % and wasting to 8·4 % by 2030., Conclusion: A remarkable decrease in the prevalence of stunting and underweight has been observed over the last 15 years. Nepal is likely to achieve the nutritional targets for stunting but not for wasting by 2030. Given large subpopulation variations, further improvement in undernutrition require more specific, targeted and localised programmes.

Background: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China beginning in December 2019. As of 31 January 2020, this epidemic had spread to 19 countries with 11 791 confirmed cases, including 213 deaths. The World Health Organization has declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern., Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the methodological framework suggested by Arksey and O'Malley. In this scoping review, 65 research articles published before 31 January 2020 were analyzed and discussed to better understand the epidemiology, causes, clinical diagnosis, prevention and control of this virus. The research domains, dates of publication, journal language, authors' affiliations, and methodological characteristics were included in the analysis. All the findings and statements in this review regarding the outbreak are based on published information as listed in the references., Results: Most of the publications were written using the English language (89.2%). The largest proportion of published articles were related to causes (38.5%) and a majority (67.7%) were published by Chinese scholars. Research articles initially focused on causes, but over time there was an increase of the articles related to prevention and control. Studies thus far have shown that the virus' origination is in connection to a seafood market in Wuhan, but specific animal associations have not been confirmed. Reported symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, pneumonia, headache, diarrhea, hemoptysis, and dyspnea. Preventive measures such as masks, hand hygiene practices, avoidance of public contact, case detection, contact tracing, and quarantines have been discussed as ways to reduce transmission. To date, no specific antiviral treatment has proven effective; hence, infected people primarily rely on symptomatic treatment and supportive care., Conclusions: There has been a rapid surge in research in response to the outbreak of COVID-19. During this early period, published research primarily explored the epidemiology, causes, clinical manifestation and diagnosis, as well as prevention and control of the novel coronavirus. Although these studies are relevant to control the current public emergency, more high-quality research is needed to provide valid and reliable ways to manage this kind of public health emergency in both the short- and long-term.

Chloroacetamide herbicides, namely acetochlor and metolachlor, are common herbicides used on corn and soybean fields. Dichloroacetamide safeners, namely benoxacor and furilazole, are commonly used in formulations containing chloroacetamide herbicides. Extensive reports on adsorption of chloroacetamide herbicides are available, yet little information exists regarding adsorption potential of co-applied safeners. Herein, the adsorption and desorption characteristics of selected herbicide safeners to granular activated carbon (GAC) and in agricultural soils are reported. Further, soil column studies were performed to understand the leaching behaviour of the herbicide Dual II Magnum. Equilibrium sorption experiments of safeners to three agricultural soils and one GAC showed that adsorption was best fitted by the Freundlich isotherm. The Freundlich adsorption constant, K f , for benoxacor and furilazole sorption onto three agricultural soils ranged from 0.1 to 0.27 and 0.1 to 0.13 (mg/g) × (mg/L)ˆ(1/n), respectively. The K f for benoxacor and furilazole to GAC was 6.4 and 3.4 (mg/g) × (mg/L)ˆ(1/n), respectively, suggesting more favorable sorption of benoxacor to GAC than furilazole to GAC. The sorption to soils was reversible as almost 40%-90% of both safeners was desorbed from three soils. These results were validated in four replicated soil column studies, where S-metolachlor was shown to leach similarly to the safener benoxacor, originating from the herbicide formulation. The leaching of S-metolachlor and benoxacor was influenced by soil texture. Cumulatively, these results show that safeners will move through the environment to surface waters similarly to the active ingredients in herbicides, but may be removed during drinking water treatment via GAC., (Copyright © 2019. Approximately 242 million kg of herbicides are applied in the United States (US) annually. While herbicides prevent the growth of weeds, they can damage crops resulting in so called "herbicide injury." To increase herbicidal tolerance of crops, herbicide safeners are commonly added to formulations. Herbicidal safeners are labeled as inert ingredients in herbicide formulations and typically minimal fate and transport information is available. The objective of this study is to experimentally derive the aqueous solubility, octanol-water partition coefficient, and photo-degradation and permanganate oxidation of two dichloroacetamide safeners, benoxacor and furilazole. These results can be used to understand the environmental chemodynamics of these compounds and their degradation via common drinking water treatment systems containing permanganate. The aqueous solubility of benoxacor and furilazole was 22 and 235 mg L -1 respectively while the estimated solubility from EPI Suite was 102.7 and 255 mg L -1 respectively. The log octanol-water partition coefficient of benoxacor and furilazole was 2.23 and 1.96 respectively. The selected safeners were not photodegradable to any great extent. Both benoxacor and furilazole oxidation were found to be second order with respect to initial KMnO 4 concentrations. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine sero-prevalence of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) among goat population of outbreak suspected areas; Kaski and Syangja districts of Nepal. A total of 460 goat serum samples were tested by using c-ELISA for the presence of antibodies against PPR. Out of the 460 samples tested, 380 samples were found positive, giving overall sero-positivity of 82.60%. Significantly higher sero-prevalence was found (* P  < 0.05) in females (87.50%) compared to males (70.45%) and crossbreed goats were found highly susceptible than the pure breed goats (* P  < 0.05). Likewise, higher sero-prevalence of PPR was observed in adults and cross breed goats compared to their counterparts and significantly higher sero-prevalence was observed in Syangja district compared to Kaski. Thus, adults, females and cross-breeds populations of goats are at higher risk of PPR whereas geographically, goat population of Syangja district were found significantly prone to PPR. Appropriate control measures, such as ring vaccination can be followed to prevent the potential outbreak situation.

Two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were run to bio-mineralize 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) and 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) in lab scale settings. The reactors were shown to reproducibly biotransform these munitions under aerobic and anaerobic conditions during the operations of these SBRs. Complete removal (100% biotransformation) of DNAN (initially 17.7 ± 5.4 mg L -1 ) and NTO (initially 15.0 ± 7.1 mg L -1 ) was observed in an anaerobic SBR when Luria-Bertani (LB) broth was present. In contrast, an aerobic SBR degraded only 58 ± 22% of DNAN (initially 19.7 ± 6.2 mg L -1 ) and 45 ± 24% of NTO (initially 9.7 ± 6.3 mg L -1 ) when either LB or glucose was also added indicating that anaerobic conditions are more favorable for biotransformation of these munitions. Transcriptomic analysis of the DNAN and NTO degrading anaerobic SBR revealed upregulation of a putative nitroreductase, hydroxylaminophenol mutases, 4-hydroxylphenyl acetate associated genes, and quinone oxioreductases. Major Bacterial populations included Bacteroidales, Campylobacterales, Enterobacteriales, Pseudomonadales, Burkholderiales and Clostridiales. Results from this study can be used to inform investigation of munition degrading organisms and the functional genes responsible.

Millions of tons of fecal-contaminated poultry litter are applied to U.S. agricultural fields annually. Precipitation and irrigation facilitate transport of fecal-derived pathogens and fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) to groundwater. The goal of this study was to compare transport of pathogens, FIB, and a microbial source tracking marker gene for poultry litter (LA35) in a simulated soil-to-groundwater system. Nine laboratory soil columns containing four different soil types were used to evaluate microbial transport to groundwater via infiltration. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to monitor Salmonella enterica Typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., Brevibacterium sp. LA35 and Bacteroidales leached from soil columns inoculated with poultry litter. S. enterica was correlated with LA35 poultry litter marker gene and FIB concentrations in column soils containing organic matter, but not in acid washed sands. In contrast, S. enterica was found to correlate with LA35 and FIB in the leachate from columns containing sand, but not with leachate from organic soil columns. The majority of recovered DNA was found in leachate of predominately sandy soil columns, and in the soil of loamy columns. At least 90% of the DNA retained in soils for each microbial target was found in the top 3cm of the column. These studies suggest that poultry litter associated pathogens and FIB are rapidly released from litter, but are influenced by complex attenuation mechanisms during infiltration, including soil type. This study advances our understanding of the potential for subsurface transport of poultry litter associated pathogens and FIB, and support the use of the LA35 marker gene for evaluating poultry litter impacts on groundwater., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V.
