Search

Using hard (E>10 keV) X-ray observations with NuSTAR, we are able to differentiate between accretion states, and thus compact object types, of neutron stars and black holes in X-ray binaries (XRBs) in M31, our nearest Milky Way-type neighbor. Using ten moderate-depth (20-50 ks) observations of the disk of M31 covering a total of ~0.45 deg$^{2}$, we detect 20 sources at 2$\sigma$ in the 4-25 keV band pass, 14 of which we consider to be XRB candidates. This complements an existing deeper (100-400 ks) survey covering ~0.2 deg$^{2}$ of the bulge and the northeastern disk. We make tentative classifications of 9 of these sources with the use of diagnostic color-intensity and color-color diagrams, which separate sources into various neutron star and black hole regimes, identifying 3 black holes and 6 neutron stars. In addition, we create X-ray luminosity functions for both the full (4-25 keV) and hard (12-25 keV) band, as well as sub-populations of the full band based on compact object type and association with globular clusters. Our best fit globular cluster XLF is shallower than the field XLF, and preliminary BH and NS XLFs suggest a difference in shape based on compact object type. We find that the cumulative disk XLFs in the full and hard band are best fit by power laws with indices of 1.32 and 1.28 respectively. In 2021, the high-mass X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 underwent a giant X-ray outburst, the first since 2006, that reached a peak flux of ${\sim}600\,\mathrm{mCrab}$ (3-50\,keV). The goal of this work is to study the spectral evolution over the course of the outburst, search for possible cyclotron resonance scattering features (CRSFs), and to associate spectral components with the emission pattern of the accretion column. We used broadband spectra taken with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), and Chandra near the peak and during the decline phase of the outburst. We describe the data with established empirical continuum models and perform pulse-phase-resolved spectroscopy. We compare the spectral evolution with pulse phase using a proposed geometrical emission model. We find a significant spectral hardening toward lower luminosity, a behavior that is expected for super-critical sources. The continuum shape and evolution cannot be described by a simple power-law model with exponential cutoff; it requires additional absorption or emission components. We can confirm the presence of a narrow absorption feature at ${\sim}10\,\mathrm{keV}$ in both NuSTAR observations. The absence of harmonics puts into question the interpretation of this feature as a CRSF. The Be X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 went through its third recorded giant outburst from June 2021 to early 2022. We present the results of both spectral and timing analysis based on NICER monitoring, covering the 2-10 keV flux range from 20 to 310 mCrab. Dense monitoring with observations carried out about every second day and a total exposure time of 160 ks allowed us to closely track the source evolution over the outburst. Changes in spectral shape and pulse profiles showed a stable luminosity dependence during the rise and decline. The same type of dependence has been seen in past outbursts. The pulse profile is characterized by several distinct peaks and dips. The profiles show a clear dependence on luminosity with a stark transition at a luminosity of 2x10^36 erg/s, indicating a change in the emission pattern. Using relativistic ray-tracing, we demonstrate how anisotropic beaming of emission from an accretion channel with constant geometrical configuration can give rise to the observed pulse profiles over a range of luminosities., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, accepted by A&A

By studying the variability of blazars across the electromagnetic spectrum, it is possible to resolve the underlying processes responsible for rapid flux increases, so-called flares. We report on an extremely bright X-ray flare in the high-peaked BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 that occurred simultaneously with enhanced $\gamma$-ray activity detected at very high energies (VHE) by FACT on 2019 June 9. We triggered an observation with XMM-Newton, which observed the source quasi-continuously for 25 hours. We find that the source was in the brightest state ever observed using XMM-Newton, reaching a flux of $2.8\times10^{-9}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ over an energy range of 0.3 - 10 keV. We perform a spectral and timing analysis to reveal the mechanisms of particle acceleration and to search for the shortest source-intrinsic time scales. Mrk 421 exhibits the typical harder-when-brighter behaviour throughout the observation and shows a clock-wise hysteresis pattern, which indicates that the cooling dominates over the acceleration process. While the X-ray emission in different sub-bands is highly correlated, we can exclude large time lags as the computed zDCFs are consistent with a zero lag. We find rapid variability on time scales of 1 ks for the 0.3 - 10 keV band and down to 300s in the hard X-ray band (4 - 10 keV). Taking these time scales into account, we discuss different models to explain the observed X-ray flare, and find that a plasmoid-dominated magnetic reconnection process is able to describe our observation best., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Accreting neutron stars (NSs) represent a unique laboratory for probing the physics of accretion in the presence of strong magnetic fields ($B\gtrsim 10^8$ G). Additionally, the matter inside the NS itself exists in an ultra-dense, cold state that cannot be reproduced in Earth-based laboratories. Hence, observational studies of these objects are a way to probe the most extreme physical regimes. Here we present an overview of the field and discuss the most important outstanding problems related to NS accretion. We show how these open questions regarding accreting NSs in both low-mass and high-mass X-ray binary systems can be addressed with the High-Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) via simulated data. In particular, with the broad X-ray passband and improved sensitivity afforded by a low X-ray background, HEX-P will be able to 1) distinguish between competing continuum emission models; 2) provide tighter upper limits on NS radii via reflection modeling techniques that are independent and complementary to other existing methods; 3) constrain magnetic field geometry, plasma parameters, and accretion column emission patterns by characterizing fundamental and harmonic cyclotron lines and exploring their behavior with pulse phase; 4) directly measure the surface magnetic field strength of highly magnetized NSs at the lowest accretion luminosities; as well as 5) detect cyclotron line features in extragalactic sources and probe their dependence on luminosity in the super-Eddington regime in order to distinguish between geometrical evolution and accretion-induced decay of the magnetic field. Cygnus X-1, as the first discovered black hole binary, is a key source for understanding the mechanisms of state transitions, and the scenarios of accretion in extreme gravity fields. We present a spectral-timing analysis of observations taken with the Insight-HXMT mission, focusing on the spectral-state dependent timing properties in the broad energy range of 1--150 keV, thus extending previous RXTE-based studies to both lower and higher energies. Our main results are the following: a) We successfully use a simple empirical model to fit all spectra, confirming that the reflection component is stronger in the soft state than in the hard state; b) The evolution of the total fractional root mean square (rms) depends on the selected energy band and the spectral shape, which is a direct result of the evolution of the power spectral densities (PSDs); c) In the hard/intermediate state, we see clear short-term variability features and a positive correlation between central frequencies of the variability components and the soft photon index $\Gamma_1$, also at energies above 15 keV. The power spectrum is dominated by red noise in the soft state instead. Because of its complex clumpy wind, prominent cyclotron resonant scattering features, intrinsic variability and convenient physical parameters (close distance, high inclination, small orbital separation) which facilitate the observation and analysis of the system, Vela X-1 is one of the key systems to understand accretion processes in high-mass X-ray binaries on all scales. We revisit Vela X-1 with two new observations taken with NuSTAR at orbital phases ~0.68-0.78 and ~0.36-0.52 which show a plethora of variability and allow us to study the accretion geometry and stellar wind properties of the system. We follow the evolution of spectral parameters down to the pulse period time-scale using a partially covered powerlaw continuum with a Fermi-Dirac cut-off to model the continuum and local absorption. We could confirm anti-correlations between the photon index and the luminosity and, for low fluxes, between the folding energy and the luminosity, implying a change of properties in the Comptonising plasma. We could not confirm a previously seen correlation between the cyclotron line energy and the luminosity of the source in the overall observation, but we observed a drop in the cyclotron line energy following a strong flare. We see strong variability in absorption between the two observations and within one observation (for the ~0.36-0.52 orbital phases) that can be explained by the presence of a large-scale structure, such as accretion- and photoionisation wakes in the system and our variable line of sight through this structure., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, A&A accepted

INTEGRAL is an ESA mission in fundamental astrophysics that was launched in October 2002. It has been in orbit for over 18 years, during which it has been observing the high-energy sky with a set of instruments specifically designed to probe the emission from hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray sources. This paper is devoted to the subject of black hole binaries, which are among the most important sources that populate the high-energy sky. We present a review of the scientific literature based on INTEGRAL data, which has significantly advanced our knowledge in the field of relativistic astrophysics. We briefly summarise the state-of-the-art of the study of black hole binaries, with a particular focus on the topics closer to the INTEGRAL science. We then give an overview of the results obtained by INTEGRAL and by other observatories on a number of sources of importance in the field. Finally, we review the main results obtained over the past 18 years on all the black hole binaries that INTEGRAL has observed. Ultra-luminous X-ray pulsars (ULXPs) provide a unique opportunity to study super-Eddington accretion. We present the results of a monitoring campaign of ULXP NGC 7793 P13. Over our four-year monitoring campaign with Swift, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR, we measured a continuous spin-up with $\dot P$ ~ -3.8e-11 s/s. The strength of the spin-up is independent of the observed X-ray flux, indicating that despite a drop in observed flux in 2019, accretion onto the source has continued at largely similar rates. The source entered an apparent off-state in early 2020, which might have resulted in a change in the accretion geometry as no pulsations were found in observations in July and August 2020. We used the long-term monitoring to update the orbital ephemeris and the periodicities seen in both the observed optical/UV and X-ray fluxes. We find that the optical/UV period is very stable over the years, with $P_\text{UV}$ = 63.75 (+0.17, -0.12) d. The best-fit orbital period determined from our X-ray timing results is 64.86 +/- 0.19 d, which is almost a day longer than previously implied, and the X-ray flux period is 65.21+/- 0.15 d, which is slightly shorter than previously measured. The physical origin of these different flux periods is currently unknown. We study the hardness ratio to search for indications of spectral changes. We find that the hardness ratios at high energies are very stable and not directly correlated with the observed flux. At lower energies we observe a small hardening with increased flux, which might indicate increased obscuration through outflows at higher luminosities. We find that the pulsed fraction is significantly higher at low fluxes. This seems to imply that the accretion geometry already changed before the source entered the deep off-state. We discuss possible scenarios to explain this behavior, which is likely driven by a precessing accretion disk., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Recent observations of X-ray pulsars at low luminosities allow, for the first time, to compare theoretical models for the emission from highly magnetized neutron star atmospheres at low mass accretion rates ($\dot{M} \lesssim 10^{15}$ g s$^{-1}$) with the broadband X-ray data. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the spectral formation in the neutron star atmosphere at low $\dot{M}$ and to conduct a parameter study of physical properties of the emitting region. We obtain the structure of the static atmosphere, assuming that Coulomb collisions are the dominant deceleration process. The upper part of the atmosphere is strongly heated by the braking plasma, reaching temperatures of 30-40 keV, while its denser isothermal interior is much cooler (~2 keV). We numerically solve the polarized radiative transfer in the atmosphere with magnetic Compton scattering, free-free processes, and non-thermal cyclotron emission due to possible collisional excitations of electrons. The strongly polarized emitted spectrum has a double-hump shape that is observed in low-luminosity X-ray pulsars. A low-energy "thermal" component is dominated by extraordinary photons that can leave the atmosphere from deeper layers due to their long mean free path at soft energies. We find that a high-energy component is formed due to resonant Comptonization in the heated non-isothermal part of the atmosphere even in the absence of collisional excitations. The latter, however, affect the ratio of the two components. A strong cyclotron line originates from the optically thin, uppermost zone. A fit of the model to NuSTAR and Swift/XRT observations of GX 304-1 provides an accurate description of the data with reasonable parameters. The model can thus reproduce the characteristic double-hump spectrum observed in low-luminosity X-ray pulsars and provides insights into spectral formation., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, A&A accepted

0.1-10 MeV observations of the black hole microquasar Cygnus X-1 have shown the presence of a spectral feature in the form of a power law in addition to the standard black body and Comptonization components observed by INTEGRAL. This so-called "high-energy tail" has recently been shown to be strong in its hard spectral state and interpreted as high-energy part of the emission from a compact jet. This result was, however, obtained from a data set dominated by hard state observations. In the soft state, only upper limits on the presence and hence the potential parameters of a high-energy tail could be derived. Using an extended data set we aim at obtaining better constraints on the properties of this spectral component in both states. We make use of data obtained from 15 years of observations with the INTEGRAL satellite. The data set is separated into the different states and we analyse stacked state-resolved spectra obtained from the X-ray monitors, the gamma-ray imager, and the gamma-ray spectrometer onboard. A high-energy component is detected in both states confirming its earlier detection in the hard state and its suspected presence in the soft state with INTEGRAL. We first characterize the high-energy tail components in the two states through a model-independent, phenomenological analysis. We then apply physical models based on hybrid Comptonization. The spectra are well modeled in all cases, with a similar goodness of the fits. While in the phenomenological approach the high-enery tail has similar indices in both states, the fits with the physical models seem to indicate different properties. We discuss the potential origins of the high-energy components in both states, and favor an interpretation where the part of the high-energy component is due to a compact jet in the hard state and hybrid Comptonization in either a magnetised or non-magnetised corona in the soft state., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. Accreting X-ray pulsars (XRPs) undergo luminous X-ray outbursts during which the spectral and timing behavior of the neutron star can be studied in detail. We analyze a $NuSTAR$ observation of the XRP XTE J1858+034 during its outburst in 2019. The spectrum is fit with a phenomenological, a semi-empirical and a physical spectral model. A candidate cyclotron line is found at $48\,$keV, implying a magnetic field of $5.4\times10^{\rm 12}\,$G at the site of emission. This is also supported by the physical best-fit model. We propose an orbital period of about $81$ days based on the visual inspection of the X-ray outbursts recurrence time. Based on $Fermi$ Gamma-ray Burst Monitor data, the standard disk accretion-torque theory allowed us to infer a distance of $10.9\pm1.0\,$kpc. Pulse profiles are single-peaked and show a pulsed fraction that is strongly energy-dependent at least up to $40$ keV., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 9 pages, 2 tables, 7 figures

The microquasar Cygnus X-3 underwent a giant radio flare in April 2017, reaching a maximum flux of $\sim 16.5$ Jy at 8.5 GHz. We present results from a long monitoring campaign carried out with Medicina at 8.5, 18.6 and 24.1 GHz, in parallel to the Mets\"ahovi radio telescope at 37 GHz, from 4 to 11 April 2017. We observe a spectral steepening from $\alpha = 0.2$ to 0.5 (with $S_{\nu} \propto \nu^{-\alpha}$) within 6 h around the epoch of the peak maximum of the flare, and rapid changes in the spectral slope in the following days during brief enhanced emission episodes while the general trend of the radio flux density indicated the decay of the giant flare. We further study the radio orbital modulation of Cyg X-3 emission associated with the 2017 giant flare and with six mini-flares observed in 1983, 1985, 1994, 1995, 2002 and 2016. The enhanced emission episodes observed during the decline of the giant flare at 8.5 GHz coincide with the orbital phase $\phi \sim 0.5$ (orbital inferior conjunction). On the other hand the light curves of the mini-flares observed at $15-22$ GHz peak at $\phi \sim 0$, except for the 2016 light curve which is shifted of 0.5 w.r.t. the other ones. We attribute the apparent phase shift to the variable location of the emitting region along the bent jet. This might be explained by the different accretion states of the flaring episodes (the 2016 mini-flare occurred in the hypersoft X-ray state)., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present the spectral analysis of the LMXB GRO J1744-28 using $\sim$29 ks of NuSTAR data taken in 2017 February at a low luminosity of $3.2\times 10^{36}$ erg/s (3-50 keV). The continuum spectrum is modeled with an absorbed power-law with exponential cut-off, and an additional iron line component. We find no obvious indications for a CRSF and therefore perform a detailed cyclotron line search using statistical methods on the pulse phase-averaged as well as phase-resolved spectra. The previously detected Type II X-ray bursts are absent. Clear pulsations at a period of 2.141124(9) Hz are detected. The pulse profile shows an indication of a secondary peak, which was not seen at higher flux. The 4$\sigma$ upper limit for the strength of a CRSF in the 3-20 keV band is 0.07 keV, lower than the strength of the line found at higher luminosity. The detection of pulsations shows that the source did not enter the "propeller" regime, even though the source flux of $4.15\times 10^{-10}$ erg/cm$^{2}$/s was almost one order of magnitude below the threshold for the propeller regime claimed in previous studies on this source. The transition into the propeller regime in GRO J1744-28 must therefore be below a luminosity of $3.2\times 10^{36}$ erg/s, which implies a surface magnetic field $\lesssim 2.9\times 10^{11}$ G and mass accretion rate $\lesssim 1.7\times 10^{16}$ g/s. A change of the CRSF depth as function of luminosity is not unexpected and has been observed in other sources. This result possibly implies a change in emission geometry as function of mass accretion rate to reduce the depth of the line below our detection limit.

We summarize the results of a dedicated effort between 2012 and 2019 to follow the evolution of the cyclotron line in Her~X-1 through repeated NuSTAR observations. The previously observed nearly 20-year long decay of the cyclotron line energy has ended around 2012: from there onward the pulse phase averaged flux corrected cyclotron line energy has remained stable and constant at an average value of Ecyc= (37.44+/-0.07) keV (normalized to a flux level of 6.8 RXTE/ASM-cts/s). The flux dependence of Ecyc discovered in 2007 is now measured with high precision, giving a slope of (0.675+/-0.075) keV/(ASM-cts/s), corresponding to an increase of 6.5% of Ecyc for an increase in flux by a factor of two. We also find that all line parameters as well as the continuum parameters show a correlation with X-ray flux. While a correlation between Ecyc and X-ray flux (both positive and negative) is now known for several accreting binaries with various suggestions for the underlying physics, the phenomenon of a long-term decay has so far only been seen in Her~X-1 and Vela~X-1, with far less convincing explanations., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics (in press)

We utilize the joint capabilities of IBIS and SPI to perform a state-resolved 20--2000\,keV analysis of the microquasar Cygnus X-1. In both LHS and HSS, the spectral analysis reveals the presence of a high-energy tail above 400\,keV in addition to a standard, Compton-like continuum in the 20--400\,keV range. We study the polarisation properties of the hard X-ray radiation, as well as of the polarisation of this high-energy tail. Polarisation is detected in the LHS in agreement with previous work. Strongly magnetized, accreting neutron stars show periodic and aperiodic variability over a wide range of time scales. By obtaining spectral and timing information on these different time scales, we can have a closer look into the physics of accretion close to the neutron star and the properties of the accreted material. One of the most prominent time scales is the strong pulsation, i.e., the rotation period of the neutron star itself. Over one rotation, our view of the accretion column and the X-ray producing region changes significantly. This allows us to sample different physical conditions within the column but at the same time requires that we have viewing-angle-resolved models to properly describe them. In wind-fed high-mass X-ray binaries, the main source of aperiodic variability is the clumpy stellar wind, which leads to changes in the accretion rate (i.e., luminosity) as well as absorption column. This variability allows us to study the behavior of the accretion column as a function of luminosity, as well as to investigate the structure and physical properties of the wind, which we can compare to winds in isolated stars., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomische Nachrichten (proceedings of the XMM-Newton Workshop 2019)

Cyclotron lines, also called cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSF) are spectral features, generally appearing in absorption, in the X-ray spectra of objects containing highly magnetized neutron stars, allowing the direct measurement of the magnetic field strength in these objects. Cyclotron features are thought to be due to resonant scattering of photons by electrons in the strong magnetic fields. The main content of this contribution focusses on electron cyclotron lines as found in accreting X-ray binary pulsars (XRBP) with magnetic fields on the order of several 1012 Gauss. Also, possible proton cyclotron lines from single neutron stars with even stronger magnetic fields are briefly discussed.With regard to electron cyclotron lines, we present an updated list of XRBPs that show evidence of such absorption lines. The first such line was discovered in a 1976 balloon observation of the accreting binary pulsar Hercules X-1, it is considered to be the first direct measurement of the magnetic field of a neutron star. As of today (mid 2018), we list 36 XRBPs showing evidence of one ore more electron cyclotron absorption line(s). A few have been measured only once and must be confirmed (several more objects are listed as candidates). In addition to the Tables of objects, we summarize the evidence of variability of the cyclotron line as a function of various parameters (especially pulse phase, luminosity and time), and add a discussion of the different observed phenomena and associated attempts of theoretical modeling. We also discuss our understanding of the underlying physics of accretion onto highly magnetized neutron stars. We present two observations of the high-mass X-ray binary GX 301-2 with NuSTAR, taken at different orbital phases and different luminosities. We find that the continuum is well described by typical phenomenological models, like a very strongly absorbed NPEX model. However, for a statistically acceptable description of the hard X-ray spectrum we require two cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSF), one at ~35 keV and the other at ~50 keV. Even though both features strongly overlap, the good resolution and sensitivity of NuSTAR allows us to disentangle them at >=99.9% significance. This is the first time that two CRSFs are seen in GX 301-2. We find that the CRSFs are very likely independently formed, as their energies are not harmonically related and, if it were a single line, the deviation from a Gaussian shape would be very large. We compare our results to archival Suzaku data and find that our model also provides a good fit to those data. We study the behavior of the continuum as well as the CRSF parameters as function of pulse phase in seven phase bins. We find that the energy of the 35 keV CRSF varies smoothly as function of phase, between 30-38 keV. To explain this variation, we apply a simple model of the accretion column, taking the altitude of the line-forming region, the velocity of the in-falling material, and the resulting relativistic effects into account. We find that in this model the observed energy variation can be explained simply due to a variation of the projected velocity and beaming factor of the line forming region towards us., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Bright and eclipsing, the high-mass X-ray binary Vela X-1 offers a unique opportunity to study accretion onto a neutron star from clumpy winds of O/B stars and to disentangle the complex accretion geometry of these systems. In Chandra-HETGS spectroscopy at orbital phase ~0.25, when our line of sight towards the source does not pass through the large-scale accretion structure such as the accretion wake, we observe changes in overall spectral shape on timescales of a few kiloseconds. This spectral variability is, at least in part, caused by changes in overall absorption and we show that such strongly variable absorption cannot be caused by unperturbed clumpy winds of O/B stars. We detect line features from high and low ionization species of silicon, magnesium and neon whose strengths and presence depend on the overall level of absorption. They imply a co-existence of cool and hot gas phases in the system that we interpret as a highly variable, structured accretion flow close to the compact object such as has been recently seen in simulations of wind accretion in high-mass X-ray binaries., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures; A&A accepted

The Be X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 was in an extended low luminosity state during most of 2016. We observed this state with NuSTAR and Swift, supported by INTEGRAL observations as well as optical spectroscopy with the NOT. We present a comprehensive spectral and timing analysis of these data here to study the accretion geometry and investigate a possible onset of the propeller effect. The H-alpha data show that the circumstellar disk of the Be-star is still present. We measure equivalent widths similar to values found during more active phases in the past, indicating that the low-luminosity state is not simply triggered by a smaller Be disk. The NuSTAR data, taken at a 3-78 keV luminosity of ~6.8e35 erg/s (for a distance of 7.1 kpc), are well described by standard accreting pulsar models, such as an absorbed power-law with a high-energy cutoff. We find that pulsations are still clearly visible at these luminosities, indicating that accretion is continuing despite the very low mass transfer rate. In phase-resolved spectroscopy we find a peculiar variation of the photon index from ~1.5 to ~2.5 over only about 3% of the rotational period. This variation is similar to that observed with XMM-Newton at much higher luminosities. It may be connected to the accretion column passing through our line of sight. With Swift/XRT we observe luminosities as low as 1e34 erg/s during which the data quality did not allow us to search for pulsations, but the spectrum is much softer and well described by either a blackbody or soft power-law continuum. In September 2016, the microquasar Cygnus X-3 underwent a giant radio flare, which was monitored for 6 days with the Medicina Radio Astronomical Station and the Sardinia Radio Telescope. Long observations were performed in order to follow the evolution of the flare on a hourly scale, covering six frequency ranges from 1.5 GHz to 25.6 GHz. The radio emission reached a maximum of 13.2 +/- 0.7 Jy at 7.2 GHz and 10 +/- 1 Jy at 18.6 GHz. Rapid flux variations were observed at high radio frequencies at the peak of the flare, together with rapid evolution of the spectral index: alpha steepened from 0.3 to 0.6 within 5 hours. This is the first time that such fast variations are observed, giving support to the evolution from optically thick to optically thin plasmons in expansion moving outward from the core. Based on the Italian network (Noto, Medicina and SRT) and extended to the European antennas (Torun, Yebes, Onsala), VLBI observations were triggered at 22 GHz on five different occasions, four times prior to the giant flare, and once during its decay phase. Flux variations of 2-hour duration were recorded during the first session. They correspond to a mini-flare that occurred close to the core ten days before the onset of the giant flare. From the latest VLBI observation we infer that four days after the flare peak the jet emission was extended over 30 mas., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the identification of a bright hard X-ray source dominating the M31 bulge above 25 keV from a simultaneous NuSTAR-Swift observation. We find that this source is the counterpart to Swift J0042.6+4112, which was previously detected in the Swift BAT All-sky Hard X-ray Survey. This Swift BAT source had been suggested to be the combined emission from a number of point sources; our new observations have identified a single X-ray source from 0.5 to 50 keV as the counterpart for the first time. In the 0.5-10 keV band, the source had been classified as an X-ray binary candidate in various Chandra and XMM studies; however, since it was not clearly associated with Swift J0042.6+4112, the previous E < 10 keV observations did not generate much attention. This source has a spectrum with a soft X-ray excess (kT~ 0.2 keV) plus a hard spectrum with a power law of Gamma ~ 1 and a cutoff around 15-20 keV, typical of the spectral characteristics of accreting pulsars. Unfortunately, any potential pulsation was undetected in the NuSTAR data, possibly due to insufficient photon statistics. The existing deep HST images exclude high-mass (>3 Msun) donors at the location of this source. The best interpretation for the nature of this source is an X-ray pulsar with an intermediate-mass (<3 Msun) companion or a symbiotic X-ray binary. X-ray spectra of accreting pulsars are generally observed to vary with their X-ray luminosity. In particular, the hardness of the X-ray continuum is found to depend on luminosity. In a few sources, the correlation between the energy of the cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF) and the luminosity is clear. Different types (signs) of the correlation are believed to reflect different accretion modes. We analyse two NuSTAR observations of the transient accreting pulsar Cep X-4 during its 2014 outburst. Our analysis is focused on a detailed investigation of the dependence of the CRSF energy and of the spectral hardness on X-ray luminosity, especially on short timescales. To investigate the spectral changes as a function of luminosity within each of the two observations, we used the intrinsic variability of the source on the timescale of individual pulse cycles (tens of seconds), the so-called pulse-to-pulse variability. We find that the NuSTAR spectrum of Cep X-4 contains two CRSFs: the fundamental line at ~30 keV and its harmonic at ~55 keV. We find for the first time that the energy of the fundamental CRSF increases and the continuum becomes harder with increasing X-ray luminosity not only between the two observations, that is, on the long timescale, but also within an individual observation, on the timescale of a few tens of seconds. We investigate these dependencies in detail including their non-linearity. We discuss a possible physical interpretation of the observed behaviour in the frame of a simple one-dimensional model of the polar emitting region with a collisionless shock formed in the infalling plasma near the neutron star surface. Cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) are formed by scattering of X-ray photons off quantized plasma electrons in the strong magnetic field (of the order 10^12 G) close to the surface of an accreting X-ray pulsar. The line profiles of CRSFs cannot be described by an analytic expression. Numerical methods such as Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the scattering processes are required in order to predict precise line shapes for a given physical setup, which can be compared to observations to gain information about the underlying physics in these systems. A versatile simulation code is needed for the generation of synthetic cyclotron lines. Sophisticated geometries should be investigatable by making their simulation possible for the first time. The simulation utilizes the mean free path tables described in the first paper of this series for the fast interpolation of propagation lengths. The code is parallelized to make the very time consuming simulations possible on convenient time scales. Furthermore, it can generate responses to mono-energetic photon injections, producing Green's functions, which can be used later to generate spectra for arbitrary continua. We develop a new simulation code to generate synthetic cyclotron lines for complex scenarios, allowing for unprecedented physical interpretation of the observed data. An associated XSPEC model implementation is used to fit synthetic line profiles to NuSTAR data of Cep X-4. The code has been developed with the main goal of overcoming previous geometrical constraints in MC simulations of CRSFs. By applying this code also to more simple, classic geometries used in previous works, we furthermore address issues of code verification and cross-comparison of various models. We present a detailed spectral analysis of XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the accreting transient black hole GRS 1739-278 during a very faint low hard state at ~0.02% of the Eddington luminosity (for a distance of 8.5 kpc and a mass of 10 M_sun ). The broad-band X-ray spectrum between 0.5-60 keV can be well-described by a power law continuum with an exponential cutoff. The continuum is unusually hard for such a low luminosity, with a photon index of Gamma = 1.39 +/- 0.04. We find evidence for an additional reflection component from an optically thick accretion disk at the 98% likelihood level. The reflection fraction is low with R_refl = 0.043(+0.033,-0.023). In combination with measurements of the spin and inclination parameters made with NuSTAR during a brighter hard state by Miller and co-workers, we seek to constrain the accretion disk geometry. Depending on the assumed emissivity profile of the accretion disk, we find a truncation radius of 15-35 Rg (5-12 R_ISCO ) at the 90% confidence limit. We report the detection of coherent pulsations from the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 7793 P13. The ~0.42s nearly sinusoidal pulsations were initially discovered in broadband X-ray observations using XMM-Newton and NuSTAR taken in 2016. We subsequently also found pulsations in archival XMM-Newton data taken in 2013 and 2014. The significant (>>5 sigma) detection of coherent pulsations demonstrates that the compact object in P13 is a neutron star with an observed peak luminosity of ~1e40 erg/s (assuming isotropy), well above the Eddington limit for a 1.4 M_sun accretor. This makes P13 the second ultraluminous X-ray source known to be powered by an accreting neutron star. The pulse period varies between epochs, with a slow but persistent spin up over the 2013-2016 period. This spin-up indicates a magnetic field of B ~ 1.5e12 G, typical of many accreting pulsars. The most likely explanation for the extreme luminosity is a high degree of beaming, however this is difficult to reconcile with the sinusoidal pulse profile., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Electron cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSFs) are observed as absorption-like lines in the spectra of X-ray pulsars. A significant fraction of the computing time for Monte Carlo simulations of these quantum mechanical features is spent on the calculation of the mean free path for each individual photon before scattering, since it involves a complex numerical integration over the scattering cross section and the (thermal) velocity distribution of the scattering electrons. We aim to numerically calculate interpolation tables which can be used in CRSF simulations to sample the mean free path of the scattering photon and the momentum of the scattering electron. The tables also contain all the information required for sampling the scattering electron's final spin. The tables were calculated using an adaptive Simpson integration scheme. The energy and angle grids were refined until a prescribed accuracy is reached. The tables are used by our simulation code to produce artificial CRSF spectra. The electron momenta sampled during these simulations were analyzed and justified using theoretically determined boundaries. We present a complete set of tables suited for mean free path calculations of Monte Carlo simulations of the cyclotron scattering process for conditions expected in typical X-ray pulsar accretion columns (0.01
