MICADO is a first light instrument for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), set to start operating later this decade. It will provide diffraction limited imaging, astrometry, high contrast imaging, and long slit spectroscopy at near-infrared wavelengths. During the initial phase operations, adaptive optics (AO) correction will be provided by its own natural guide star wavefront sensor. In its final configuration, that AO system will be retained and complemented by the laser guide star multi-conjugate adaptive optics module MORFEO (formerly known as MAORY). Among many other things, MICADO will study exoplanets, distant galaxies and stars, and investigate black holes, such as Sagittarius A* at the centre of the Milky Way. After their final design phase, most components of MICADO have moved on to the manufacturing and assembly phase. Here we summarize the final design of the instrument and provide an overview about its current manufacturing status and the timeline. Some lessons learned from the final design review process will be presented in order to help future instrumentation projects to cope with the challenges arising from the substantial differences between projects for 8-10m class telescopes (e.g. ESO-VLT) and the next generation Extremely Large Telescopes (e.g. ESO-ELT). Finally, the expected performance will be discussed in the context of the current landscape of astronomical observatories and instruments. Near IR spectroscopic reverberation of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) potentially allows the infrared (IR) broad line region (BLR) to be reverberated alongside the disc and dust continua, while the spectra can also reveal details of dust astro-chemistry. Here, we describe results of a short pilot study (17 near-IR spectra over a 183 d period) for Mrk 509. The spectra give a luminosity-weighted dust radius of $\langle R_{\mathrm{d,lum}} \rangle = 186 \pm 4$ light-days for blackbody (large grain dust), consistent with previous (photometric) reverberation campaigns, whereas carbon and silicate dust give much larger radii. We develop a method of calibrating spectral data in objects where the narrow lines are extended beyond the slit width. We demonstrate this by showing our resultant photometric band light curves are consistent with previous results, with a hot dust lag at >40 d in the K band, clearly different from the accretion disc response at <20 d in the z band. We place this limit of 40 d by demonstrating clearly that the modest variability that we do detect in the H and K band does not reverberate on time-scales of less than 40 d. We also extract the Pa$\beta$ line light curve, and find a lag which is consistent with the optical BLR H$\beta$ line of $\sim$70-90 d. This is important as direct imaging of the near-IR BLR is now possible in a few objects, so we need to understand its relation to the better studied optical BLR., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures

Nowadays, astronomers perform point spread function (PSF) fitting for most types of observational data. Interpolation of the PSF is often an intermediate step in such algorithms. In the case of the Multi-AO Imaging Camera for Deep Observations (MICADO) at the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), PSF interpolation will play a crucial role in high-precision astrometry for stellar clusters and confirmation of the Intermediate-Mass Black Holes (IMBHs) presence. Significant PSF variations across the field of view invalidate the approach of deconvolution with a mean PSF or on-axis PSF. The ignoring of PSF variations can be especially unsatisfactory in the case of Single Conjugate Adaptive Optics (SCAO) observations, as these sophisticated and expensive systems are designed to achieve high resolution with ground-based telescopes by correcting for atmospheric turbulence in the direction of one reference star. This paper presents a method for dynamic adjustment of cable preloads based on the actuation redundancy of \acp{CDPR}, which allows increasing or decreasing the platform stiffness depending on task requirements. This is achieved by computing preload parameters with an extended nullspace formulation of the kinematics. The method facilitates the operator's ability to specify a defined preload within the operation space. The algorithms are implemented in a real-time environment, allowing for the use of optimization in hybrid position-force control. To validate the effectiveness of this approach, a simulation study is performed, and the obtained results are compared to existing methods. Furthermore, the method is investigated experimentally and compared with the conventional position-controlled operation of a cable robot. In this paper we present the first-ever $L$- and $M$-band interferometric observations of Circinus, building upon a recent $N$-band analysis. We used these observations to reconstruct images and fit Gaussian models to the $L$ and $M$ bands. Our findings reveal a thin edge-on disk whose width is marginally resolved and is the spectral continuation of the disk imaged in the $N$ band to shorter wavelengths. Additionally, we find a point-like source in the $L$ and $M$ bands that, based on the $LMN$-band spectral energy distribution fit, corresponds to the $N$-band point source. We also demonstrate that there is no trace of direct sightlines to hot dust surfaces in the circumnuclear dust structure of Circinus. By assuming the dust is present, we find that obscuration of A$_{\rm V} \gtrsim 250$ mag is necessary to reproduce the measured fluxes. Hence, the imaged disk could play the role of the obscuring "torus" in the unified scheme of active galactic nuclei. Furthermore, we explored the parameter space of the disk + hyperbolic cone radiative transfer models and identify a simple modification at the base of the cone. Adding a cluster of clumps just above the disk and inside the base of the hyperbolic cone provides a much better match to the observed temperature distribution in the central aperture. This aligns well with the radiation-driven fountain models that have recently emerged. Only the unique combination of sensitivity and spatial resolution of the VLTI allows such models to be scrutinized and constrained in detail. Using real-variable methods, we characterise multipliers for general classes of Hardy--Orlicz spaces, unifying and extending several classical results due to Hardy and Littlewood; Duren and Shields; Paley; and others. Applications of our results include inequalities involving Fourier coefficients and Fourier transforms of elements of Hardy--Orlicz spaces and their duals, as well as embeddings into spaces of generalised smoothness, Sobolev type-embeddings and Paley-Wiener type theorems.

WebAssembly (Wasm) is a low-level binary format for web applications, which has found widespread adoption due to its improved performance and compatibility with existing software. However, the popularity of Wasm has also led to its exploitation for malicious purposes, such as cryptojacking, where malicious actors use a victim's computing resources to mine cryptocurrencies without their consent. To counteract this threat, machine learning-based detection methods aiming to identify cryptojacking activities within Wasm code have emerged. It is well-known that neural networks are susceptible to adversarial attacks, where inputs to a classifier are perturbed with minimal changes that result in a crass misclassification. While applying changes in image classification is easy, manipulating binaries in an automated fashion to evade malware classification without changing functionality is non-trivial. In this work, we propose a new approach to include adversarial examples in the code section of binaries via instrumentation. The introduced gadgets allow for the inclusion of arbitrary bytes, enabling efficient adversarial attacks that reliably bypass state-of-the-art machine learning classifiers such as the CNN-based Minos recently proposed at NDSS 2021. We analyze the cost and reliability of instrumentation-based adversarial example generation and show that the approach works reliably at minimal size and performance overheads., Comment: 20 pages. Finding the maximum size of a Sidon set in $\mathbb{F}_2^t$ is of research interest for more than 40 years. In order to tackle this problem we recall a one-to-one correspondence between sum-free Sidon sets and linear codes with minimum distance greater or equal 5. Our main contribution about codes is a new non-existence result for linear codes with minimum distance 5 based on a sharpening of the Johnson bound. This gives, on the Sidon set side, an improvement of the general upper bound for the maximum size of a Sidon set. Additionally, we characterise maximal Sidon sets, that are those Sidon sets which can not be extended by adding elements without loosing the Sidon property, up to dimension 6 and give all possible sizes for dimension 7 and 8 determined by computer calculations., Comment: Fixed an issue in Lemma 2.6 of the arXiv version

Recent models for the inner structure of active galactic nuclei (AGN) advocate the presence of a radiatively accelerated, dusty outflow launched from the outer regions of the accretion disk. Here we present the first near-infrared (near-IR) variable (rms) spectrum for the high-luminosity, nearby AGN Mrk 876. We find that it tracks the accretion disk spectrum out to longer wavelengths than the mean spectrum due to a reduced dust emission. The implied outer accretion disk radius is consistent with the infrared results predicted by a contemporaneous optical accretion disk reverberation mapping campaign and much larger than the self-gravity radius. The reduced flux variability of the hot dust could be either due to the presence of a secondary, constant dust component in the mean spectrum or introduced by the destructive superposition of the dust and accretion disk variability signals or some combination of both. Assuming thermal equilibrium for optically thin dust, we derive the luminosity-based dust radius for different grain properties using our measurement of the temperature. We find that in all cases considered the values are significantly larger than the dust response time measured by IR photometric monitoring campaigns, with the least discrepancy present relative to the result for a wavelength-independent dust emissivity law, i.e. a blackbody, which is appropriate for large grain sizes.
