Objective To analyze the trend of acute myocardial infarction mortality and potential life loss among residents in Nanning City from 2015 to 2023, and provide a basis for formulating chronic disease prevention and control policies. Methods To collate the death cause monitoring data of the whole population in Nanning City. Crude mortality, standardized mortality, age-specific mortality, composition ratio, potential years of life lost (PYLL%), standardized years of life lost (SPYLL%) and average years of life lost (AYLL) were calculated. Joinpointlog-linear regression model was used for trend analysis. Results From 2015 to 2023, a total of 38 870 deaths from acute myocardial infarction were reported in 12 counties (cities, districts) of Nanning City, including 22 566 males and 16 304 females. The crude mortality rate was 59.84/100 000, and the standardized mortality rate was 53.70/100 000. The crude mortality rate and standardized mortality rate both showed a stable trend, with AAPC values of -1.408 and -2.892, and P values of 0.443 and 0.054, respectively. The mortality rate increases with age and shows a linear increase after the age of 40. The proportion of pre hospital mortality in acute myocardial infarction ranged from 81.53% to 87.29%, which was at a high level, but showed an overall downward trend (AAPC = -0.552%, P = 0.007). The potential life loss rate ranged from 0.33% to 0.42%, with an average life loss of 6.02 years to 7.03 years, and the trend of change was not statistically significant. However, the potential life loss rate and average life loss of women showed a downward trend, with AAPC values of -5.941% and -3.475%, respectively, and P values of 0.01. Conclusion The mortality rate of acute myocardial infarction in Nanning City is relatively high, and the potential loss of life is severe. Pre hospital emergency treatment and health education for acute myocardial infarction should be strengthened, and the elderly and men are the key population for prevention and con. Mortality among the Irkutsk region population was chosen as a research object. The aim of this study was to assess socioeconomic losses and the epidemiological risk caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases, including diseases of the circulatory system, among adult working age population in the Irkutsk region. The study was cross-sectional and observational. We analyzed data on mortality, gross regional product and employment provided by the Territorial office of the Federal State Statistic Service in the Irkutsk region over 2011–2020. Social and economic losses caused by early mortality among the population in the Irkutsk region were calculated in accordance with the Methodical Guidelines on using the Potential years of life lost (PYLL) indicator to establish priority health issues of the Russian population at the federal, regional and municipal level. Data were analyzed using Statistica 6.0. The assessment revealed that over 2011–2020 mortality caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases on average accounted for 13.85 % (13.64; 14.07) of the overall population mortality. Average annual social losses equaled 154,827.00 (153,098.56; 156,555.44) person-years lost before a person reached the end of working age. Accompanying probable economic losses aggregated over the analyzed period ranged between 9,560.58 and 15,934.29 million rubles. We managed to build acceptable predictive models (R2 > 0.5) on the growth in economic losses due to mortality caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases for both sexes and for males living in the Irkutsk region. Our findings highlight the significance of socioeconomic losses caused by nutrition-related non-communicable diseases and give evidence of suboptimal diets being widely spread among the population of the Baikal region.

This article examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on potential years of life lost (PYLL) in Romania's counties in 2020 and 2021. PYLL highlights the burden of premature deaths in a community and is a useful tool for prioritizing community health issues. The study compares the PYLL variation between different counties, identifying disparities in premature mortality rates and highlighting areas that require specific public health interventions. The results indicate that COVID-19 has had a significant impact on potential years of life lost across the country. For the year 2020, the total number of deaths from confirmed COVID-19 cases was 19,455, of which 14,152 premature deaths caused 193,489 PYLL, with a crude rate of 1053.28 PYLL per 100,000 inhabitants. In 2021, there were 39,966 deaths from confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 28,777 premature deaths, 386,061 PYLL, and a crude rate of 2116.63 PYLL per 100,000 population. This study reveals significant variations only in some counties, based on BYLL rates, and in the two years analyzed. The proportion of premature deaths (<80 years) varied by county and gender. PYLL's analysis by gender shows that men experienced a higher number of premature deaths than women in most counties, and this trend persisted in both years. The results are presented in the form of thematic maps, highlighting standardized PYLL rates for both genders in each county, facilitating a visual understanding of regional disparities. Mortality caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted indicators of Years of Potential Life Lost (YPLL) worldwide. This study aimed to estimate the YPLL due to mortality caused by COVID-19, according to sex, age group, and race/color in Brazil, from March 2020 to December 2021. Deaths caused by COVID-19 were characterized, in which the rates and ratios of standardized YPLL rates, the average number of years of potential life lost (ANYPLL), and the average age at death (AAD) were estimated and compared. Overall, 13,776,969.50 potential years of life were lost, which resulted in an average loss of 22.5 potential years not lived. A greater loss of potential years of life was identified in men (58.12%) and in the age groups from 0 to 59 years in the black (58.92%) and indigenous (63.35%) populations, while in the age groups of 60 years and over, a greater loss of YPLL was observed in the white (45.89%) and yellow (53.22%) populations. Women recorded the highest ADD, with the exception of indigenous women. White men (1.63), brown men (1.59), and black men (1.61) had the highest rates when compared to white women. Although COVID-19 has a greater impact on the elderly, it was the black and indigenous populations under the age of 60 who had the greatest loss of potential years of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the last 30 years, significant geopolitical, social, and economic changes have impacted the OECD members and candidates, which has led to a significant improvement in the quality of life and life expectancy, with the reduction of the potential years of life lost one of the indicators of reduced mortality observed across the group. On the geopolitical side, the admission of the Baltic countries and their standardization of the metrics to track demographics more aligned with the internationally accepted practices, on the social side; the increase in life expectancy poses challenges to the care of the elders but also the extension on the age within the labor force and lastly, on the economic changes; the ongoing increase of income and GDP has led to an expanded access of care including goods and services. ObjectiveTo investigate the epidemiological traits and potential years of life lost associated with lung cancer mortality among inhabitants of Shanghai's Pudong New Area from 1995 to 2021， in order to serve as a reference for developing intervention approaches.MethodsThe death surveillance system was used to gather statistics on lung cancer deaths. Objective To understand the characteristics and trends of diabetes death among the permanent population in Urumqi, and to provide a theoretical basis for the scientific prevention and control of diseases. Methods The diabetes death data in Urumqi from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2022, was derived from the population death information registration management system in the Chinese Disease Control and Prevention Information System, and a total of 2 661 deaths were collected. Statistical analysis of diabetes mortality, potential years of life lost ( PYLL), potential years of life lost rate (PYLLR), average years of life lost ( AYLL), early death probability and its average annual growth rate, complication composition ratio (in order) were carried out. The gray GM ( 1, 1) model was used to predict the diabetes mortality rate in 2023 .,2024 and 2025. Results The diabetes mortality rate in Urumqi from 2017 to 2021 fluctuated between 9. 21 - 16. 37 per 100,000, with an average annual growth rate of 12. 19%. The average annual growth rate of male mortality was 1. 23 times that of women. The mortality rate increases with age, reaching a peak of 401. 48 per 100,000 at the age of over 85. Deaths over the age of 65 accounted for 76. 66% of the total number of deaths. The average annual growth rate of PYLL, PYLLR, AYLL, and early death probability in men was higher than that in women. The average annual growth rate of type 2 diabetes PYLL, PYLLR, and early death was higher than that of type 1 diabetes. Objective: To identify the sex differences associated with the potential years of life lost due to suicide in the department of Nariño, from 2005 to 2019. Methodology: Descriptive, observational and retrospective study, in which 1686 death certificates by suicide of men and women in the department of Nariño, identified in the National Administrative Department of Statistics, were analyzed. Results: From 2005 to 2019, 1,212 suicide cases of men were observed and 474 of women. Women committed suicide at younger ages than men. 50.5% of the men had completed primary school, and 46.0% of the women, secondary school. The highest number of suicide cases of men and women occurred in the urban area (51.2% and 45.1% respectively). Poisoning was the suicide mechanism most used by women (66.7%), and for men, the highest percentage (41.7) corresponded to hanging. The annual trend of deaths by suicide was higher in men than in women. For men, the suicide rate was above 4.5 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, while for women, it remained below 3.0. Conclusions: There was an increase in the trend of deaths in the period analyzed and the risk of dying by suicide in men was 3.9 times the risk of dying by suicide in women. Objective: To estimate the potential years of life lost and the spatial distribution of mortality from road incidents by mode of transport in Medellín 2010-2020, as a baseline for the implementation of the Vision Zero strategy of the World Health Organization in the city's mobility. Methodology: This is a retrospective and descriptive cross-sectional study, with a secondary source. The calculation of the potential years of life lost was made using the life expectancy at birth in Colombia as the age limit, according to year and gender. The spatial analysis was carried out from the direction of the incident; Kernel density was represented by the standardquantile classification method, and the zones of influence were created by the multiple ring buffer method, with distances of 500 and 1000 meters. Results: Between 2010 and 2020, Medellín registered 2,988 deaths due to road incidents. Those who died the most were pedestrians, with 1,423 (47.6%) deaths, followed by motorcyclists, with 1,295 (43.3%). Potential years of life lost were 98,787. The zones (comunas) with the highest concentration of pedestrian deaths were: Candelaria, Buenos Aires and Manrique; in motorcyclists, the highest concentration was evidenced in the river road system. By areas of influence, pedestrians killed within a radius of 1,000 meters from the river road system were 688 (49.8%), and motorcyclists, 636 (52.2%). Conclusion: Motorcyclists were the ones who died the youngest and the most years they stopped living. Polytrauma is a constant diagnosis of death, but injuries to the head, skull and thorax are more lethal in pedestrians and motorcyclists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Identifying the patterns, distribution, and characteristics of suicide in a region is possible with epidemiological surveillance which may lay the foundations for suicide prevention. Objective: To describe the situation of suicide in Antioquia during the period 2016-2017. Methods: Descriptive study based on data from the Epidemiological Surveillance System for External Cause Injuries of the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences. Suicides rates and Years of Life Lost (YLL) were calculated and the circumstances of the event were described. Results: There were 425 suicides in 2016 and 419 in 2017, with a suicides rate of 6.50 and 6.34 per 100,000 inhabitants/year respectively, and 16,446.8 YLL for 2016 and 16,019.94 YLL for 2017. Most of the suicides occurred in males, in young age groups, urban residents and single marital status. Regarding the characteristics of suicide, the most frequently used mechanism was mechanical asphyxia followed by poisoning, in about 40% of cases a triggering life event was established, such as partner conflicts, and were more frequent on Sunday and Monday and at night and early morning. Conclusion: The incidence of suicide in Antioquia in-creased in 2016 and 2017 compared to previous years. It was more frequent in economically productive ages, which explains the high YLL. The description of the characteristics of suicide may facilitate the discussion of preventive interventions.

Objective: To quantify the loss of life due to suicide in Spain compared to other causes of death and to typify the differences by sex and method chosen to caused death., Methods: Observational study with retrospective mortality data analysing the 2,175,334 death records in Spain in the period 2016-2020 provided by the National Institute of Statistics. Potential years of life lost, average potential years of life lost, the ratio of potential years of life lost and life expectancy due to suicide were calculated according to sex and the lethal method used. These indicators were compared with the other causes of death., Results: The average number of potential years of life lost due to suicide was 28 years, second only to childhood and pregnancy-related diseases. Life expectancy ranged from 46.7 to 68 years, finding that the main differences in relation to sex were linked to the method of suicide used, with ratios of potential years of life lost ranging from 0.9 (alcohol poisoning) to 27 (shooting with a short weapon)., Conclusions: In the study period in Spain, suicide is the leading cause of preventable premature mortality. Abstract Background Understanding the impact of the burden of COVID-19 is key to successfully navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of a larger investigation on COVID-19 mortality impact, this study aims to estimate the Potential Years of Life Lost (PYLL) in 17 countries and territories across the world (Australia, Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, Cyprus, France, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Peru, Norway, England & Wales, Scotland, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United States [USA]). Methods Age- and sex-specific COVID-19 death numbers from primary national sources were collected by an international research consortium. The study period was established based on the availability of data from the inception of the pandemic to the end of August 2020. The PYLL for each country were computed using 80 years as the maximum life expectancy. Results As of August 2020, 442,677 (range: 18–185,083) deaths attributed to COVID-19 were recorded in 17 countries which translated to 4,210,654 (range: 112–1,554,225) PYLL. The average PYLL per death was 8.7 years, with substantial variation ranging from 2.7 years in Australia to 19.3 PYLL in Ukraine. North and South American countries as well as England & Wales, Scotland and Sweden experienced the highest PYLL per 100,000 population; whereas Australia, Slovenia and Georgia experienced the lowest. Overall, males experienced higher PYLL rate and higher PYLL per death than females. In most countries, most of the PYLL were observed for people aged over 60 or 65 years, irrespective of sex. Yet, Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, Israel, Peru, Scotland, Ukraine, and the USA concentrated most PYLL in younger age groups. Conclusions Our results highlight the role of PYLL as a tool to understand the impact of COVID-19 on demographic groups within and across countries, guiding preventive measures to protect these groups under the ongoing pandemic. Continuous monitoring of PYLL is therefore needed to better understand the burden of COVID-19 in terms of premature mortality.

Objectives: This study aimed to measure the mortality rate, potential years of life lost, and excess general mortality among individuals treated for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in a TB endemic country. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a population-based cohort study of 4022 TB patients and 12,243 gender-matched and age-matched controls from prevalence surveys conducted between 2000 and 2004 in the Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, South India. Results: The mortality rate among TB patients was 59/1000 person-years. The excess standardized mortality ratio was 2.3 (95% CI: 1.7–3.1). ABSTRACT: Objective: To estimate the potential years of life lost (PYLL) to cancer in the State of Mato Grosso, from 2000 to 2019, stratified by sex, according to age groups and cancer types. Methods: It is a quantitative study with an ecological approach developed from secondary data, using the PYLL and its derivatives. Results: In the period analyzed, deaths from cancer in Mato Grosso resulted in 680,338 PYLL before the age of 80, with a variation of 82.5%. Of this total, 52.7% were assigned to males. The rate of the PYLL for cancer before the age of 60 was 70.9% in males, and 80.1% among women. The rates of PYLL increased in the period and showed slightly higher values in males. In the analysis according to age group, the rates of PYLL were also higher in males, except between the ages of 30 and 49. Lung cancers and lymphomas/leukemias resulted in greater losses of PYLL among men and female specific cancers (breast, cervical and uterine, and ovarian cancer) accounted for 36.26% of the PYLL among women, with variability per age groups. Conclusion: In Mato Grosso, the PYLL indicator for cancer presented unfavorable evolution between 2000 and 2019, with greater damage for males and for the younger population. Leukemias, lymphomas, and lung and breast cancers were the main causes for the PYLL.

ABSTRACT: Objective: To estimate the mortality trend and to analyze the potential years of life lost (PYLL) due to leukemias and lymphomas in Brazil and Mato Grosso, from 2001 to 2019. Methods: Time-series study on deaths from leukemias and lymphomas with data obtained from the Mortality Information System. Trends were calculated by age group by the Joinpoint regression method, using calendar year as regressor variable, estimated annual percentage change (APC) and mean annual percentage change, considering 95% confidence intervals. PYLL rates were collected from the Cancer Mortality Atlas. Results: In Brazil, the mortality rate trend remained stable for both diseases in the period: leukemias (APC=0.2; 95%CI 0.0–0.3) and lymphomas (APC=0.2; 95%CI 0.4–0.1). In Mato Grosso state, the rate for leukemias was also stable (APC=0.3; 95%CI 1.0–1.6). For lymphomas, the trend was ascendant (APC=2.3; 95%CI 0.5–4.2), but descending among people younger than 59 years. For leukemias, PYLL rates were 64 and 65/100,000 in Brazil and Mato Grosso, respectively. For lymphomas, 27 and 22/100,000, respectively, with the highest rates found among males. Conclusion: The behavior of mortality rates from leukemia and lymphoma in Mato Grosso was different from that observed nationally, with an upward trend for lymphomas and no differences between age groups for both diseases. PYLL rates for leukemias were similar, while for lymphomas they were higher among men and lower in Mato Grosso when compared to Brazil.

Objective. To investigate the magnitude and distribution of the main causes of death, disability, and risk factors in Haiti. Methods. We conducted an ecological analysis, using data estimated from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 for the period 1990-2017, to present life expectancy (LE), healthy life expectancy (HALE) at under 1-year-old, cause-specific deaths, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), disability adjusted life-years (DALYs), and risk factors associated with DALYs. Results. LE and HALE increased substantially in Haiti. People may hope to live longer in 2017, but in poor health. The Caribbean countries had significantly lower YLLs rates than Haiti for ischemic heart disease, stroke, lower respiratory infections, and diarrheal diseases. Road injuries were the leading cause of DALYs for people aged 5-14 years. Road injuries and HIV/AIDS were the leading causes of DALYs for men and women aged 15-49 years, respectively. Ischemic heart disease was the main cause of DALYs for people older than 50 years. Maternal and child malnutrition were the leading risk factors for DALYs in both sexes. Conclusion. Haiti faces a double burden of disease. Infectious diseases continue to be an issue, while non-communicable diseases have become a significant burden of disease. More attention must also be focused on the increase in worrying public health issues such as road injuries, exposure to forces of nature and HIV/AIDS in specific age groups. To address the burden of disease, sustained actions are needed to promote better health in Haiti and countries with similar challenges.

Abstract Background A clear understanding of the macro-level contexts in which education impacts health is integral to improving national health administration and policy. In this research, we use a visual analytic approach to explore the association between education and health over a 20-year period for countries around the world. Method Using empirical data from the OECD and the World Bank for 26 OECD countries for the years 1995–2015, we identify patterns/associations between education and health indicators. By incorporating pre- and post-educational attainment indicators, we highlight the dual role of education as both a driver of opportunity as well as of inequality. Results Adults with higher educational attainment have better health and lifespans compared to their less-educated peers. We highlight that tertiary education, particularly, is critical in influencing infant mortality, life expectancy, child vaccination, and enrollment rates. In addition, an economy needs to consider potential years of life lost (premature mortality) as a measure of health quality. Conclusions We bring to light the health disparities across countries and suggest implications for governments to target educational interventions that can reduce inequalities and improve health. Our country-level findings on NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) rates offer implications for economies to address a broad array of vulnerabilities ranging from unemployment, school life expectancy, and labor market discouragement. The health effects of education are at the grass roots-creating better overall self-awareness on personal health and making healthcare more accessible.

Introduction: HIV/AIDS is a disease that continues to be a threat to public health., Objective: Estimate the burden of disease generated by HIV/AIDS in the departments of Colombia, 2018 - 2022., Methodology: Disease burden study, based on the metrics of global health estimates from the World Health Organization. State morbidity and mortality databases were used., Results: The departments of Colombia lost 1051,599 (II 95% 849,217.41-1,253,980) DALYs due to HIV/AIDS. When classifying the departments by DALYs rates per 100,000 inhabitants, the differences in the burden in the departments become visible, departments, with rates in the study period, ranging from 4029.8 (3274.4-4785.2) DALYs, in the case of the department of Quindío and 297.2 (103.9-490.5) DALYs in the department of Vichada, men lost on average 23,833.48 (II 95% 13813-35809), while women lost 8,033 (II95% 5214-11177), 75% of DALYs in men occur between 20 and 49 years, in women 71.4% in the same age group., Conclusions: There are differences in the loss of years of healthy life between the departments of Colombia, and annual variations in each department., (Copyright © 2024 Sociedad Española de Médicos de Atención Primaria (SEMERGEN). Background: maternal death represents one of the most notable events in the conflicts of sexual and reproductive health in the world. The high mortality from this cause in the world is unacceptable. However, estimates for determining the burden of maternal morbidity and mortality health are still limited. Objective: to determine the burden of mortality related to pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium in Cuba between 2005 and 2018. Methods: a descriptive study was carried out, with national cross-sectional data and annual periodicity. The universe of study was made up of all the deaths that occurred during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium in the period 2005-2018, in Cuba (N = 831). The mortality ratio, years of life potentially lost due to mortality, the percentage, the average and the trend were calculated. Results: of the total number of deceased due to deaths that occurred during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, 463 were due to direct death; 247 for indirect death; and 247, due to other deaths 121. The ratio averaged 48.8 deaths for every 100 000 live births. Years of life potentially lost were 42,582: 23,433 for direct deaths, 12,724 for indirect deaths, and 6,425 for other deaths. Conclusion: direct obstetric deaths were the most frequent and those with the greatest impact on life expectancy; while indirect obstetrician women showed a tendency to increase over time. A retrospective analysis was conducted on a population-based cohort study of 4022 TB patients and 12,243 gender-matched and age-matched controls from prevalence surveys conducted between 2000 and 2004 in the Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, South India. The mortality rate among TB patients was 59/1000 person-years. The excess standardized mortality ratio was 2.3 (95% CI: 1.7–3.1). The rate of potential years of life lost was 6.15/1000 (95% CI: 5.97–6.33) in the TB cohort compared to the general population of 1.52/1000 (95% CI: 1.46–1.60). Individuals aged >50 years, those underweight (<40 kg), with treatment failures, or lost to follow-up had higher mortality rates when compared with the rest of the TB cohort. The risk of death was significantly higher in the TB cohort until the end of the fourth year when compared with later years. Mortality in the TB cohort was 2.3 times higher than in the age-matched general population. Most deaths occurred in the first year after completing treatment. Background: complications during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium are the main causes of death in women of childbearing age. The study of the mortality burden derived from these complications is useful to quantify the impact of premature deaths on the population life expectancy. Objective: to describe the behavior of the maternal deaths burden due to direct causes in Cuba, between 2005 and 2018. Methods: descriptive study of annual series, cross-sectional. The universe was the total of direct maternal deaths (N = 463). The mortality ratio, years of life potentially lost due to mortality, the trend, the percentage and the average were calculated. Results: during the years 2005-2018, 463 women died in Cuba from direct obstetric causes. Premature deaths quantified 22897 years of life lost due to this cause, with a tendency to decrease over time and with an annual average of 1636 years of life potentially lost; on average, they stopped living for each deceased, 49 years. The group of complications related to the puerperium (6790) was the direct cause that generated more years of life lost. Conclusion: the causes with the greatest impact on life expectancy were complications related to the puerperium, other hemorrhages and ectopic pregnancy; but the women who died at younger ages were from abortion and puerperal infection. Pediatric tuberculosis is a serious infectious disease and a hidden global epidemic. The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiological situation of tuberculosis mortality in children under 15 years of age in Colombia in the period 2010–2018. A longitudinal descriptive study was conducted. The variables sex, age groups, and origin were studied. This study had 260 cases for analysis and was carried out in three phases. The first phase was the determination of the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. The second phase was the construction of indicators by territorial entities. The third phase was stratification into four epidemiological situations according to the mortality rate and years of life lost. The median age was 7 years (range 0–14), 66.5% of cases were pulmonary tuberculosis (97.7% without bacteriological confirmation), 14.3781 years of life lost were recorded (95% CI: 142.811–168.333), and in children under 10–14 years, the loss was 110,057. Amazonas had the highest adjusted YLL rate (3979.7). In total, 36.4% of the territories had a high mortality, and 30.3% adjusted to the situation designated as 1. This is the first study that has used composite indicators to address the problem of premature mortality from childhood tuberculosis in Colombia. Our results allow us to specify that this disease remains a challenge for public health. It requires models of care and differential strategies by region. It also requires ensuring opportunities in diagnosis with sensitive methods, as well as intersectoral work for the optimal approach.

Background: Estimating the excess of premature deaths (before the age of 75 years) and Potential Years of Life Lost allows ranking causes of death as an expression of the burden of disease in a population. We statistically analysed the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on excess premature mortality in the total population and specifically, by sexes, compared to the pre-pandemic period, through Potential Years of Life Lost., Material and Method: In this retrospective descriptive observational study, we counted excess of premature mortality in the years 2020, 2021, and 2022 by cause of death (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, digestive diseases, injury, COVID-19, and other causes) and by sexes compared to the period average from 2017-2019, based on the deaths registered in Bihor County (48,948 people)., Results: Premature deaths due to COVID-19 (1,745 people of both sexes) contributed 71.3% to excess mortality, the population being similar for both sexes (71.4% in men and 71.2% in women). The Potential Years of Life Lost/death due to COVID-19 was 11.84 years for both sexes (11.76 years in men and 12.02 years in women). Potential Years of Life Lost/all-cause heath was lower during the pandemic (13.42 years for both sexes, 14.06 years for men and 12.32 years for women) compared to the pre-pandemic period (14.6 years for both sexes, 15.1 years for men and 13.5 years for women)., Conclusions: The excess of premature mortality and decreased Potential Years of Life Lost/death during the pandemic, shows an increase in the proportion of deaths at ages closer to the established limit for premature mortality (75 years) compared to the pre-pandemic period., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright © 2024, Rahota et al.)

One of modern methods of estimating health losses under malignant neoplasms in economic terms, characterizing number of deaths and age of death are lost years of potential life. The cumulative losses from premature cancer mortality made up to 29 217.5 man-years in 2013 and 39 710 man-years in 2021. The number of years lost over 9 years increased by 10 492.5 man-years despite decreasing of mortality across all ages. The rate of lost years of potential life during this period increased from 5.3 to 6.2 years. The maximal contribution to lost years of potential life was made by population groups 45-59 years old. Total losses from premature mortality from cervical cancer were 2682.5 man-years and 2411 man-years in 2013 in 2021. The number of years lost decreased by 271.5 man-years. The rate of lost years of potential life during this period increased from 0.5 to 3.7 years. The greatest contribution to lost years of potential life was made by population groups 60-64 and 40-49 years old. The calculation demonstrated that there are significant reserves for reducing population mortality from malignant neoplasms in most vulnerable age population groups that is important for organization of oncological care and planning of target prevention programs.

Abstract: In Colombia, dengue is a disease of great impact due to its morbidity and mortality, however, studies on the effects of the economic burden at the local level are scarce. Therefore, our study sought to describe the economic burden of dengue epidemics between 2010 and 2016 in the State of Meta, Colombia. A longitudinal study was performed using information from the records of the epidemiological information system (Sistema Nacional de Vigilancia en Salud Pública - SIVIGILA), and the indicator of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) was determined as an estimator of the burden of dengue. To assess the economic impact, two assessment scenarios were considered (minimum range and maximum range), which allowed the estimate of the effects of the years of life lost (YLLs). Mortality cases presented heterogeneity in the age groups, mainly affecting groups under 15 years and over 65 years, with YLLs raging between 158.58 and 300.38. In total, 2010 showed the highest medical care costs of the study period, with USD 664,123 for women and USD 740,221 for men. In the epidemic years (2010, 2012-2015) between 91,072.3 and 184,175.1 DALYs were lost per million inhabitants, which generated social burden costs higher than the USD 669.6 million. In conclusion, dengue can be considered a disease of high cost at the local level, economically affecting the General Social Security System in Health and social welfare.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze premature mortality and Potential Years of Life Lost by noncommunicable diseases in a city in the countryside of São Paulo from 2010 to 2014. Methods: ecological study of temporal tendency, using secondary source. For analysis, the premature mortality coefficient and the Potential Years of Life Lost indicator were used. Results: males had the highest premature mortality rate due to cardiovascular disease, with 213.04 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants, followed by neoplasms, with 188.44. In women, there was an inversion with 134.22 deaths from cancer and 110.71 deaths from cardiovascular disease. Regarding Potential Years of Life Lost, males had an average of 12.19 years lost by death and females of 13.45 years lost. Conclusions: the results reinforce the need to increase public health prevention and promotion policies to reduce premature deaths, especially among men.

Introduction: The external causes of mortality are constituted as a public health problem which affect young population, have social relevance, are avoidable and their impact is reducible in the long term. Objective: To describe the behavior of mortality due to external causes and the potential years of life lost in the Colombian population from 1998 to 2015. Materials and methods: An analytical study was conducted by using 641,837 death certificates which were classified in four large groups of external mortality: homicide, suicide, traffic accident and other causes. Mortality rates (crude and standardized) were calculated with direct method in three periods of time and potential years of life lost, for each group. Results: The risk of dying from external causes was 81.66 per hundred thousand inhabitants, with a decrease of 47.1% and 37.6 potential years of life lost. For homicide, a rate of 47.3 per hundred thousand inhabitants was recorded, with a reduction of 59.3% and 23 potential years of life lost. Traffic accidents recorded a reduction of 30.3% with a rate of 15.7. Suicide documented less reduction in 18 years of age (9.8%) and an average rate of 5.1. Conclusion: Deaths caused by external causes are priorities when it comes to raising public policies, mainly for the reduction of homicides that are a reflection of the armed conflict and the crime presented in the country, generating the loss of years of productive life for society. It is necessary to outline the perpetrators to focus and intervene the most affected populations.

Objectives: New HIV diagnoses in persons aged > 50 years (hereafter 'older persons') are becoming more common; the clinical features and outcomes of these older individuals are poorly described. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all new adult HIV diagnoses between October 1989 and December 2019 in southern Alberta, Canada. Differences in risk for HIV acquisition and screening, sociodemographic/clinical characteristics, and causes of death were compared between individuals younger and older than 50 years at the time of diagnosis. Results: New HIV diagnoses in persons > 50 years old increased from 7% in 1990 to 18% in 2019. Risk for HIV acquisition and screening reasons differed by age. Heterosexual sex (29%) was the greatest risk factor among older persons, contrasting with male same sex activity in younger persons (51%) (P < 0.001). Illness was the most common indication for testing in older persons (47%), whereas younger persons were more likely to have requested testing (34%) (P < 0.001). Relationship status differed, with 33% of older persons being married to an opposite sex partner versus 12% in younger persons (P < 0.001). Although older persons had a lower mean nadir CD4 count (132 cells/µL) than younger persons (181 cells/µL) (P < 0.001), 80% of deaths between 2010 and 2019 in the older group were attributable to non‐AIDS‐related causes versus 47% in younger patients. Since 2000, AIDS‐related deaths and potential years of life lost have declined for both age groups. Conclusion: The increase in new HIV diagnoses in persons aged > 50 years in southern Alberta suggests that older individuals require customized approaches for optimizing HIV diagnosis and treatment. Background and objective Previous reports have shown that lung cancer incidence and mortality were increasing both in male and female; however, the temporal trends in lung cancer eliminated life expectancy and potential years of life lost (PYLL) are very rare. Thus, we examine the temporal trends in lung cancer eliminated life expectancy and PYLL in Kunshan city, Jiangsu province, 1981-2015. Methods Data were collected from vital registry of Kunshan city. Lung cancer eliminated life expectancy and the PYLL were calculated by sex. The Chinese population in 2000 was used to calculate age-standardized PYLL. Estimate annual percentage changes (eAPC) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to examine the temporal trendss. Results During 1981 to 2015, substantially increasing trend was observed for the lung cancer eliminated life expectancy, which increased by 0.34 years in 1981 to 0.86 in 2015 (APC=3.2%, 95%CI: 2.8%-3.6%), and a significant increasing trend was found for male (APC=3.0%, 95%CI: 2.5%-3.5%) and female (APC=3.6%, 95%CI: 3.0%-4.2%). Moreover, the age-standardized PYLL among both sex (APC=-0.1%, 95%CI: -0.6%-0.4%) and male (APC=-0.5%, 95%CI: -1.1%-0.1%) were stable, but increasing trend was observed in females (APC=1.5%, 95%CI: 0.3%-2.7%). Conclusion Although there was no significant change over the past 3 decades regarding the effect of premature deaths due to lung cancer, a substantial increasing trend was observed in lung cancer eliminated life expectancy, which suggested that targeted lung cancer prevention and control measures are urgently need.

Abstract Background Homicide – a lethal expression of violence – has garnered little attention from public health researchers and health policy makers, despite the fact that homicides are a cause of preventable and premature death. Identifying populations at risk and the upstream determinants of homicide are important for addressing inequalities that hinder population health. This population-based study investigates the public health significance of homicides in Ontario, Canada, over the period of 1999–2012. We quantified the relative burden of homicides by comparing the socioeconomic gradient in homicides with the leading causes of death, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and neoplasm, and estimated the potential years of life lost (PYLL) due to homicide. Methods We linked vital statistics from the Office of the Registrar General Deaths register (ORG-D) with Census and administrative data for all Ontario residents. We extracted all homicide, neoplasm, and cardiovascular deaths from 1999 to 2012, using International Classification of Diseases codes. For socioeconomic status (SES), we used two dimensions of the Ontario Marginalization Index (ON-Marg): material deprivation and residential instability. Trends were summarized across deprivation indices using age-specific rates, rate ratios, and PYLL. Results Young males, 15–29 years old, were the main victims of homicide with a rate of 3.85 [IC 95%: 3.56; 4.13] per 100,000 population and experienced an upward trend over the study period. The socioeconomic neighbourhood gradient was substantial and higher than the gradient for both cardiovascular and neoplasms. Finally, the PYLL due to homicide were 63,512 and 24,066 years for males and females, respectively. Conclusions Homicides are an important cause of death among young males, and populations living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. Our findings raise concerns about the burden of homicides in the Canadian population and the importance of addressing social determinants to address these premature deaths.

Suicide is an important public health problem, fundamentally affecting the younger population and responding to multiple biological, psychological, and social causes. The objective of this study was to characterize changes in suicide mortality, suicide methods, and years of potential life lost from 2005 to 2019 in Paraguay. This observational, descriptive study used data from the Vital Statistics Information Subsystem of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare. The average mortality rate from suicide was 4.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, with an increase from 4.2 between 2005 and 2009 to 5.8 from 2014 to 2019. Suicide was more common in men (75%) than in women. In men, the highest mortality rate was observed among those 20-24 years old, whereas in women, the ages most affected were the 15-19-year-old age group. The most-used method for suicide was hanging. The most frequent place of suicide occurrence was at home (73%). The seasonality of suicide occurrence showed a slight increase in the spring-summer months compared with autumn-winter (53% vs. 47%). The rate of potential years of life lost statistically significantly increased from 2005 to 2019. Public health measures need to be implemented to investigate the underlying reasons and implement interventions in the population to decrease suicide mortality in Paraguay.

Aim of the study: The aim was to assess the impact of the most frequent cancer-related causes of death in Poland by estimating the years of potential life lost (YPLL) and to compare different measures of the burden of cancer deaths on the population. Material and methods: Mortality rate, YPLL and mean YPLL were calculated for the 11 most frequently recorded cancer-related causes of death in Poland. YPLL were measured applying the up-to-date reference life tables proposed by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and used in the Global Burden of Disease study (GBD 2015). Absolute numbers of cancer deaths by site, gender and five-year age groups were obtained from the Polish National Cancer Registry (2015). Results: In 2015 the total YPLL amounted to 1,990,457, with 23.6% from lung and bronchial cancer. Mean YPLL was 19.79 years and varied considerably according to tumour site (26.12 [brain] - 14.3 [prostate]). Three tumour sites (brain, ovarian and kidney) are positioned higher according to mean YPLL than according to YPLL percentage and mortality percentage. Conclusions: Our results draw attention to the impact of cancer on society and individual patients. Addressing research efforts to prevention and/or treatment of major YPLL causes could result in a substantial impact on general life expectancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Management of malignancy in elderly patients is challenging. We aimed to assess the impact of age and ageing on overall survival (OS), recurrence‐free survival (RFS), tumour‐specific survival (TSS) and potential years of life lost (PYLL) after surgery for hepatocarcinoma (HCC). Methods: Consecutive patients treated for HCC between 2005 and 2015 were evaluated. Patients were divided according to age‐decade. Afterwards, elderly patients (≥75 years) were compared with patients < 75 years. A 1:1 propensity matching was used to reduce the risk of bias. Survival was estimated by Kaplan‐Meier method and Cox regression analysis. Results: Four hundred and thirty‐nine patients were stratified: group 1 (age ≤ 55, n = 72), group 2 (age: 56‐65, n = 133), group 3 (age: 66‐74, n = 141) and group 4 (age ≥ 75, n = 93). Group 1 had the highest median PYLL (27.6, IQR 24.6‐32.5) while group 4 the lowest (2.0, IQR 0‐9.6; P < 0.001). Comparing elderly vs younger, there were no significant differences in terms of OS (P = 0.054), TSS (P = 0.321) and RFS (P = 0.240). Ageing was the only variable associated with post‐operative complications (OR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.23‐5.13; P = 0.025) and liver‐related morbidity was an independent predictor of OS. Conclusion: Ageing per se is not an absolute contraindication for liver resection, given the acceptable oncologic long‐term prognosis, but the worse short‐term outcomes in the elderly should induce an accurate patient selection. Objetivo: Estimar la mortalidad atribuible al consumo de cigarrillo en el Caribe colombiano durante los años 2009-2013. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo. El número de defunciones se obtuvo del Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadísticas. La proporción y las muertes atribuibles al tabaco fueron estimadas a partir de la fracción etiológica poblacional, utilizando un método dependiente de prevalencia de consumo. Se calcularon los años potenciales de vida perdidos (descuento 3 %). La información se analizó en los programas Excel® y Epidat 4.1. Resultados: Se atribuyeron 964 muertes (método i), 1375 muertes (método ii) y 94 muertes (método iii). Los cánceres de tráquea, pulmón y bronquios fueron los que más contribuyeron a dicha mortalidad. Un total de 17 715 años potenciales de vida se perdieron (7745 en hombres, 9970 en mujeres). Conclusión: El consumo de tabaco en el Caribe colombiano contribuye significativamente a la mortalidad por cáncer y al aumento de años potenciales de vida perdidos. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and objective In recent years, the incidence and mortality of lung cancer is rising. It has become the leading cause of death of malignant tumors in China. The aim of this study is to explore the trend of mortality and years of life lost due to lung cancer in residents in Xiamen, so as to provide the basis data on preventing lung cancer in Xiamen. Methods The data of residents in Xiamen dying of lung cancer from 2005 to 2014 was collected and cleared up to calculate the evaluation indexes including the mortality rate, the average potential life lost (AYLL), and the average percentage change (APC) of mortality rate. GM(1,1) model was used to predict the future mortality and AYLL. Results From 2005 to 2014, the average mortality rate of lung cancer in residents in Xiamen was 28.58 per 100,000 persons, of which in male was 2.90 times as that in female. The APC was 4.86%. The AYLL, which was 7.8 years, had decline trend from 2005 to 2014. The mean absolute percentage errors between observed values and fitted values were 2.16%-8.83%. The mortality rate and AYLL of lung cancer in residents in Xiamen would increase from 2015 to 2019. Conclusion The mortality of lung cancer increased year by year in Xiamen. There are both increasing trend of mortality and years of life lost in future. So we should pay more attentions on preventing and curing of lung cancer.

O objetivo foi estimar a carga da doença para as amputações de membros inferiores atribuíveis ao diabetes mellitus no Estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil, no período de 2008 a 2013. Realizou-se um estudo epidemiológico descritivo, utilizando-se o cálculo de anos de vida perdidos ajustados por incapacidade (DALY - disability-adjusted life years). A carga da doença foi alta, mais de 8 mil DALY, distribuídos entre homens e mulheres. A incapacidade respondeu por 93% do DALY e a mortalidade por 7,5%. A carga dos homens foi 5.580,6 DALY, praticamente o dobro das mulheres (2.894,8), sendo que a participação do componente anos de vida saudável perdidos em virtude de incapacidade (YLD - years lost due to disability) dos homens impulsionou esta taxa para 67,6% do total do DALY. Os homens vivem mais tempo com a amputação, por isto perdem mais anos de vida sadia (65,8%), e a mortalidade é maior entre as mulheres (61%). As distribuições das taxas de DALY no estado não mostraram distribuição homogênea. A intensificação de avaliação, planejamento e desenvolvimento de estratégias custo-efetivas para a prevenção e educação em saúde para o pé diabético deve ser considera a partir da maior vulnerabilidade masculina.

Background: Long-term projections of premature mortality (defined as deaths age <75 years) help to inform decisions about public health priorities. This study aimed to project premature mortality rates in Australia to 2044, and to estimate numbers of deaths and potential years of life lost (PYLL) due to premature mortality overall and for 59 causes., Methods: We examined the past trends in premature mortality rates using Australian mortality data by sex, 5-year age group and 5-year calendar period up to 2019. Cigarette smoking exposure data (1945-2019) were included to project lung cancer mortality. Age-period-cohort or generalised linear models were developed and validated for each cause to project premature mortality rates to 2044., Findings: Over the 25-year period from 1990-1994 to 2015-2019, there was a 44.4% decrease in the overall age-standardised premature mortality rate. This decline is expected to continue, from 162.4 deaths/100,000 population in 2015-2019 to 141.7/100,000 in 2040-2044 (12.7% decrease). Despite declining rates, total numbers of premature deaths are projected to increase by 22.8%, rising from 272,815 deaths in 2015-2019 to 334,894 deaths in 2040-2044. This is expected to result in 1.58 million premature deaths over the 25-year period 2020-2044, accounting for 24.5 million PYLL. Of the high-level cause categories, cancer is projected to remain the most common cause of premature death in Australia by 2044, followed by cardiovascular disease, external causes (including injury, poisoning, and suicide), and respiratory diseases., Interpretation: Despite continuously declining overall premature mortality rates, the total number of premature deaths in Australia is projected to remain substantial, and cancer will continue to be the leading cause. These projections can inform the targeting of public health efforts and can serve as benchmarks against which to measure the impact of future interventions.
