Search

X-ray pulsars experiencing extreme mass accretion rates can produce neutrino emission in the MeV energy band. Neutrinos in these systems are emitted in close proximity to the stellar surface and subsequently undergo gravitational bending in the space curved by a neutron star. This process results in the formation of a distinct beam pattern of neutrino emission and gives rise to the phenomenon of neutrino pulsars. The energy flux of neutrinos, when averaged over the neutron star's pulsation period, can differ from the isotropic neutrino energy flux, which impacts the detectability of bright pulsars in neutrinos. We investigate the process of neutrino beam pattern formation, accounting for neutron star transparency to neutrinos and gravitational bending. Based on simulated neutrino beam patterns, we estimate the potential difference between the actual and apparent neutrino luminosity. We show that the apparent luminosity can greatly exceed the actual luminosity, albeit only in a small fraction of cases, depending on the specific equation of state and the mass of the star. For example, the amplification can exceed a factor of ten for $\approx0.2\%$ of typical neutron stars with mass of $1.4\,M_\odot$. Strong amplification is less probable for neutron stars of higher mass. We previously studied the inner crust and the pasta mantle of a neutron star within the 4th-order extended Thomas-Fermi (ETF) approach with consistent proton shell corrections added perturbatively via the Strutinsky integral (SI) theorem together with the contribution due to pairing. To speed up the computations and avoid numerical problems, we adopted parametrized nucleon density distributions. However, the errors incurred by the choice of the parametrization are expected to become more significant as the mean baryon number density is increased, especially in the pasta mantle where the differences in the energy per nucleon of the different phases are very small, typically a few keV. To improve the description of these exotic structures, we discuss the important features that a nuclear profile should fulfill and introduce two new parametrizations. Performing calculations using the BSk24 functional, we find that these parametrizations lead to lower ETF energy solutions for all pasta phases than the parametrization we adopted before and more accurately reproduce the exact equilibrium nucleon density distributions obtained from unconstrained variational calculations. Within the ETFSI method, all parametrizations predict the same composition in the region with quasi-spherical clusters. However, the two new parametrizations lead to a different mantle structure at mean baryon densities above about 0.07 fm^-3, at which point lasagna is energetically favored. Interestingly, spherical clusters reappear in the pasta region. Superbursts of neutron stars are rare but powerful events explained by the explosive burning of carbon in the deep layers of the outer envelope of the star. In this paper we perform a simulation of superbursts and propose a simple method for describing the neutrino stage of their cooling, as well as a method for describing the evolution of the burst energy on a scale of several months. We note a universal relation for the temperature distribution in the burnt layer at its neutrino cooling stage, as well as the unification of bolometric light curves and neutrino heat loss rates for deep and powerful bursts. We point out the possibility of long-term retention of the burst energy in the star's envelope. A self-consistent radiation-hydrodynamics model of an accretion channel of subcritical X-ray pulsars is constructed. The influence of the presence of resonance in the scattering cross-section on the accretion process and radiation transfer is taken into account. It is shown that the efficiency of plasma deceleration by radiation depends on the magnitude of the magnetic field $B$. For $B=1.7\times 10^{12}$ G, the spectra and the degree of linear polarization of the radiation of the accretion channel are constructed. In the obtained spectra, the shape of the cyclotron line depends on the direction of the outgoing radiation. The calculated linear polarization degree of the outgoing radiation is $30 -40\%$ near the cyclotron resonance, whereas it can be small ($\lesssim 5 - 10\%$) at energies significantly lower than the resonant one., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Astronomy Letters, Vol.49, No.10 (2023)

Thermal emission of neutron stars in soft X-ray transients (SXTs) in a quiescent state is believed to be powered by the heat deposited in the stellar crust due to nuclear reactions during accretion (deep crustal heating paradigm). Confronting observations of SXTs with simulations helps to verify theoretical models of the dense matter in the neutron stars. Usually, such simulations were carried out assuming that the free neutrons and nuclei in the inner crust move together. A recently proposed thermodynamically consistent approach allows for independent motion of the free neutrons. We simulate the thermal evolution of the SXTs within the thermodynamically consistent approach and compare the results with the traditional approach and with observations. For the latter, we consider a collection of quasi-equilibrium thermal luminosities of the SXTs in quiescence and the observed neutron star crust cooling in SXT MXB 1659$-$29. We test different models of the equation of state and baryon superfluidity and take into account additional heat sources in the shallow layers of neutron-star crust (the shallow heating). We find that the observed quasi-stationary thermal luminosities of the SXTs can be equally well fitted using the traditional and thermodynamically consistent models, provided that the shallow heat diffusion into the core is taken into account. The observed crust cooling in MXB 1659$-$29 can also be fitted in the frames of both models, but the choice of the model affects the derived parameters responsible for the thermal conductivity in the crust and for the shallow heating., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables, accepted by MNRAS. XMM-Newton observations of the middle-aged radio-quiet $\gamma$-ray pulsar J0554+3107 allowed us, for the first time, firmly identify it in X-rays by detection of pulsations with the pulsar period. In the 0.2-2 keV band, the pulse profile shows two peaks separated by about a half of the rotation phase with the pulsed fraction of $25 \pm 6$ per cent. The profile and spectrum in this band can be mainly described by thermal emission from the neutron star with the hydrogen atmosphere, dipole magnetic field of $\sim 10^{13}$ G and non-uniform surface temperature. Non-thermal emission from the pulsar magnetosphere is marginally detected at higher photon energies. The spectral fit with the atmosphere+power law model implies that J0554+3107 is a rather heavy and cool neutron star with the mass of 1.6-2.1 $M_\odot$, the radius of $\approx 13$ km and the redshifted effective temperature of $\approx 50$ eV. The spectrum shows an absorption line of unknown nature at $\approx 350$ eV. Given the extinction-distance relation, the pulsar is located at $\approx 2$ kpc and has the redshifted bolometric thermal luminosity of $\approx 2 \times 10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We discuss cooling scenarios for J0554+3107 considering plausible equations of state of super-dense matter inside the star, different compositions of the heat-blanketing envelope and various ages., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures. Compton scattering is a key process shaping spectra formation and accretion flow dynamics in accreting strongly magnetized neutron stars. A strong magnetic field affects the scattering cross section and makes it dependent on photon energy, momentum, and polarization state. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate statistical features of Compton scattering of polarized X-ray radiation in a strong magnetic field. Our analysis is focused on photon gas behaviour well inside the scattering region. We take into account the resonant scattering at the fundamental cyclotron frequency, thermal distribution of electrons at the ground Landau level, and bulk velocity of the electron gas. We show that (i) the photons scattered around the cyclotron energy by the electron gas at rest tend to acquire the final energy close to the cyclotron one with a very small dispersion measure; (ii) the redistribution of photons within the Doppler core of cyclotron resonance differs significantly from the complete redistribution; (iii) the efficiency of momentum transfer from photons to the electron gas is affected by the temperature of electron gas both for photons at cyclotron energy and below it; (iv) the momentum transfer from photons to the electron gas of non-zero bulk velocity is more efficient in the case of magnetic scattering., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.D

Electron conduction opacities are one of the main physics inputs for the calculation of low- and intermediate-mass stellar models, and a critical question is how to bridge calculations for moderate and strong degeneracy, which are necessarily performed adopting different methods. The density-temperature regime at the boundary between moderate and strong degeneracy is in fact crucial for modelling the helium cores of red giant branch stars and the hydrogen/helium envelopes of white dwarfs. Prompted by recently published new, improved calculations of electron thermal conductivities and opacities for moderate degeneracy, we study different, physically motivated prescriptions to bridge these new computations with well established results in the regime of strong degeneracy. We find that these different prescriptions have a sizable impact on the predicted He-core masses at the He-flash (up to 0.01$M_{\odot}$ for initial total masses far from the transition to non-degenerate He-cores, and up to $\sim 0.04M_{\odot}$ for masses around the transition), the tip of the red giant branch (up to $\sim$0.1~mag) and the zero age horizontal branch luminosities (up to 0.03~dex for masses far from the transition, and up to $\sim$0.2~dex around the transition), and white dwarf cooling times (up to 40-45\% at high luminosities, and up to $\sim$25\% at low luminosities). Current empirical constraints on the tip of the red giant branch and the zero age horizontal branch absolute magnitudes do not allow yet to definitely exclude any of these alternative options for the conductive opacities. Tests against observations of slowly-cooling faint WDs in old stellar populations will need to be performed to see whether they can set some more stringent constraints on how to bridge calculations of conductive opacities for moderate and strong degeneracy., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics in press

(abridged version) We present a detailed spectroscopic and timing analysis of X-ray observations of the bright radio-to-gamma-ray emitting pulsar PSR B0656+14, which were obtained simultaneously with eROSITA and XMM-Newton during the Calibration and Performance Verification phase of the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission (SRG) for 100 ks. Using XMM-Newton and NICER we firstly established an X-ray ephemeris for the time interval 2015 to 2020, which connects all X-ray observations in this period without cycle count alias and phase shifts. The mean eROSITA spectrum clearly reveals an absorption feature originating from the star at 570 eV with a Gaussian sigma of about 70 eV, tentatively identified earlier in a long XMM-Newton observation (Arumugasamy et al. 2018). A second absorption feature, described here as an absorption edge, occurs at 260-265 eV. It could be of atmospheric or of instrumental origin. These absorption features are superposed on various emission components, phenomenologically described as the sum of hot (120 eV) and cold (65 eV) blackbody components, both of photospheric origin, and a power-law with photon index Gamma=2. The phase-resolved spectroscopy reveals that the Gaussian absorption line at 570 eV is clearly present throughout ~60% of the spin cycle. The visibility of the line strength coincides in phase with the maximum flux of the hot blackbody. We also present three families of model atmospheres: a magnetised atmosphere, a condensed surface, and a mixed model, which were applied to the mean observed spectrum and whose continuum fit the observed data well. The atmosphere model, however, predicts too short distances. Outer crusts of neutron stars and interiors of cool white dwarfs consist of bare atomic nuclei, arranged in a crystal lattice and immersed in a Fermi gas of degenerate electrons. We study electrostatic properties of such Coulomb crystals, taking into account the polarizability of the electron gas and considering different lattice structures, which can form the ground state. To take the electron background polarization into account, we use the linear response theory with the electron dielectric function given either by the Thomas-Fermi approximation or by the random-phase approximation (RPA). We compare the widely used nonrelativistic (Lindhard) version of the RPA approximation with the more general, relativistic (Jancovici) version. The results of the different approximations are compared to assess the importance of going beyond the Thomas-Fermi or Lindhard approximations. We also include contribution of zero-point vibrations of ions into the ground-state energy. We show that the bcc lattice forms the ground state for any charge number $Z$ of the atomic nuclei at the densities where the electrons are relativistic ($\rho\gtrsim10^6$ g cm$^{-3}$), while at lower densities the fcc and hcp lattices can form the ground state. The MgB$_2$-like lattice never forms the ground state at realistic densities in the crystallized regions of degenerate stars. The RPA corrections strongly affect the boundaries between the phases. As a result, transitions between different ground-state structures depend on $Z$ in a nontrivial way. Stellar evolution and numerical hydrodynamics simulations depend critically on access to fast, accurate, thermodynamically consistent equations of state. We present Skye, a new equation of state for fully-ionized matter. Skye includes the effects of positrons, relativity, electron degeneracy, Coulomb interactions, non-linear mixing effects, and quantum corrections. Skye determines the point of Coulomb crystallization in a self-consistent manner, accounting for mixing and composition effects automatically. A defining feature of this equation of state is that it uses analytic free energy terms and provides thermodynamic quantities using automatic differentiation machinery. Because of this, Skye is easily extended to include new effects by simply writing new terms in the free energy. We also introduce a novel thermodynamic extrapolation scheme for extending analytic fits to the free energy beyond the range of the fitting data while preserving desirable properties like positive entropy and sound speed. Near the surface of any neutron star there is a thin heat blanketing envelope that produces substantial thermal insulation of warm neutron star interiors and that relates the internal temperature of the star to its effective surface temperature. Physical processes in the blanketing envelopes are reasonably clear but the chemical composition is not. The latter circumstance complicates inferring physical parameters of matter in the stellar interiors from observations of the thermal surface radiation of the stars and urges one to elaborate the models of blanketing envelopes. We outline physical properties of these envelopes, particularly, the equation of state, thermal conduction, ion diffusion and others. Various models of heat blankets are reviewed, such as composed of separate layers of different elements, or containing diffusive binary ion mixtures in or out of diffusion equilibrium. The effects of strong magnetic fields in the envelopes are outlined as well as the effects of high temperatures which induce strong neutrino emission in the envelopes themselves. A charged particle in a magnetic field possesses discrete energy levels associated with particle rotation around the field lines. A bound complex of particles with a nonzero net charge possesses an analogous levels associated with its center-of-mass motion and, in addition, the levels associated with internal degrees of freedom, that is with relative motions of its constituent particles. The center-of-mass and internal motions are mutually dependent, which complicates theoretical studies of the binding energies, radiative transitions and other properties of the complex ions moving in quantizing magnetic fields. In this work, we present a detailed derivation of practical expressions for the numerical treatment of such properties of the hydrogenlike ions moving in strong quantizing magnetic fields, which follows and supplements the previous works of Bezchastnov et al. Second, we derive asymptotic analytic expressions for the binding energies, oscillator strengths, and photoionization cross sections of the moving hydrogenlike ions in the limit of an ultra-strong magnetic field., Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures. We analyze new XMM-Newton and archival Chandra observations of the middle-aged $\gamma$-ray radio-quiet pulsar J1957+5033. We detect, for the first time, X-ray pulsations with the pulsar spin period of the point-like source coinciding by position with the pulsar. This confirms the pulsar nature of the source. In the 0.15--0.5 keV band, there is a single pulse per period and the pulsed fraction is $\approx18\pm6$ per cent. In this band, the pulsar spectrum is dominated by a thermal emission component that likely comes from the entire surface of the neutron star, while at higher energies ($\gtrsim0.7$ keV) it is described by a power law with the photon index $\Gamma \approx 1.6$. We construct new hydrogen atmosphere models for neutron stars with dipole magnetic fields and non-uniform surface temperature distributions with relatively low effective temperatures. We use them in the spectral analysis and derive the pulsar average effective temperature of $\approx(2-3)\times10^5$ K. This makes J1957+5033 the coldest among all known thermally emitting neutron stars with ages below 1 Myr. Using the interstellar extinction--distance relation, we constrain the distance to the pulsar in the range of 0.1--1 kpc. We compare the obtained X-ray thermal luminosity with those for other neutron stars and various neutron star cooling models and set some constraints on latter. We observe a faint trail-like feature, elongated $\sim 8$ arcmin from J1957+5033. Its spectrum can be described by a power law with a photon index $\Gamma=1.9\pm0.5$ suggesting that it is likely a pulsar wind nebula powered by J1957+5033., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, published in MNRAS

We study the effect of physics input on thermal evolution of neutron stars in soft X-ray transients (SXTs). In particular, we consider different modern models of the sources of deep crustal heating during accretion episodes and the effects brought about by impurities embedded in the crust during its formation. We simulate thermal structure and evolution of episodically accreting neutron stars under different assumptions on the crust composition and on the distribution of heat sources and impurities. For the nonaccreted crust, we consider the nuclear charge fluctuations that arise at crust formation. For the accreted crust, we compare different theoretical models of composition and internal heating. We also compare results of numerical simulations with observations of the crust cooling in SXT MXB 1659-29. We found that the nonaccreted part of the inner crust of a neutron star can have a layered structure, with almost pure crystalline layers interchanging with layers composed of mixtures of different nuclei. The latter layers have relatively low thermal conductivities, which affects thermal evolution of the transients. The impurity distribution in the crust strongly depends on the models of the dense matter and the crust formation scenario. We study heat diffusion after an energy release in a deep spherical layer of the outer neutron star crust (10^7 < \rho < 4 x 10^{11} g/cm^3). We demonstrate that this layer possesses specific heat-accumulating properties, absorbing heat and directing it mostly inside the star. It can absorb up to about 10^{43}-10^{44} erg due to its high heat capacity, until its temperature exceeds T ~ 3 x 10^9 K and triggers a rapid neutrino cooling. A warm layer with T ~ 10^8 - 3 x 10^9 K can serve as a good heat reservoir, which is thermally decoupled from the inner crust and the stellar core for a few months. We present a toy model to explore the heat diffusion within the heat-accumulating layer, and we test this model using numerical simulations. We formulate some generic features of the heat propagation which can be useful, for instance, for the interpretation of superbursts in accreting neutron stars. Ages and thermal luminosities of neutron stars, inferred from observations, can be interpreted with the aid of the neutron star cooling theory to gain information on the properties of superdense matter in neutron-star interiors. We present a survey of estimated ages, surface temperatures and thermal luminosities of middle-aged neutron stars with relatively weak or moderately strong magnetic fields, which can be useful for these purposes. The catalogue includes results selected from the literature, supplemented with new results of spectral analysis of a few cooling neutron stars. The data are compared with the theory. Magnetars are believed to host the strongest magnetic fields in the present universe ($B\gtrsim10^{14}$ G) and the study of their persistent emission in the X-ray band offers an unprecendented opportunity to gain insight into physical processes in the presence of ultra-strong magnetic fields. Up to now, most of our knowledge about magnetar sources came from spectral analysis, which allowed to test the resonant Compton scattering scenario and to probe the structure of the star magnetosphere. On the other hand, radiation emitted from magnetar surface is expected to be strongly polarized and its observed polarization pattern bears the imprint of both scatterings onto magnetospheric charges and QED effects as it propagates in the magnetized vacuum around the star. X-ray polarimeters scheduled to fly in the next years will finally allow to exploit the wealth of information stored in the polarization observables. Here we revisit the problem of assessing the spectro-polarimetric properties of magnetar persistent emission. At variance with previous investigations, proper account for more physical surface emission models is made by considering either a condensed surface or a magnetized atmosphere. Results are used to simulate polarimetric observations with the forthcoming Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). We generalize our earlier work on neutron stars (arXiv:1903.04981), which assumed spherical Wigner-Seitz cells in the inner crust, to admit the possibility of pasta phases, i.e., non-spherical cell shapes. Full fourth-order extended Thomas-Fermi calculations using the density functional BSk24 are performed for cylindrical and plate-like cells. Unlike in our spherical-cell calculations, we do not include shell and pairing corrections, but there are grounds for expecting these corrections for pasta to be significantly smaller. It is therefore meaningful to compare the ETF pasta results with the full spherical-cell results, i.e., with shell and pairing corrections included. However, in view of the many previous studies in which shell and pairing corrections were omitted entirely, it is of interest to compare our pasta results with the ETF part of the corresponding spherical calculations. Making this latter comparison we find that as the density increases the cell shapes pass through the usual sequence sphere $\to$ cylinder $\to$ plate before the transition to the homogeneous core. The filling fractions found at the phase transitions are in close agreement with expectations based on the liquid-drop model. On the other hand, when we compare with the full spherical-cell results, we find the sequence to be sphere $\to$ cylinder $\to$ sphere $\to$ cylinder $\to$ plate. In neither case do any "inverted", i.e., bubble-like, configurations appear. We provide accurate fitting formulas to all our essential numerical results for each of the three phases, designed especially for the density range where the nonspherical shapes are expected, which enable one to capture not only the general behavior of the fitted functions, but also the differences between them in different phases., Comment: 16 pages, 14 tables, 8 figures, accepted by Phys. We study long-term thermal evolution of neutron stars in soft X-ray transients (SXTs), taking the deep crustal heating into account consistently with the changes of the composition of the crust. We collect observational estimates of average accretion rates and thermal luminosities of such neutron stars and compare the theory with observations. We perform simulations of thermal evolution of accreting neutron stars, considering the gradual replacement of the original nonaccreted crust by the reprocessed accreted matter, the neutrino and photon energy losses, and the deep crustal heating due to nuclear reactions in the accreted crust. We test and compare results for different modern theoretical models. We update a compilation of the observational estimates of the thermal luminosities in quiescence and average accretion rates in the SXTs and compare the observational estimates with the theoretical results. Long-term thermal evolution of transiently accreting neutron stars is nonmonotonic. The quasi-equilibrium temperature in quiescence reaches a minimum and then increases toward the final steady state. The quasi-equilibrium thermal luminosity of a neutron star in an SXT can be substantially lower at the minimum than in the final state. This enlarges the range of possibilities for theoretical interpretation of observations of such neutron stars. The updates of the theory and observations leave unchanged the previous conclusions that the direct Urca process operates in relatively cold neutron stars and that an accreted heat-blanketing envelope is likely present in relatively hot neutron stars in the SXTs in quiescence. The results of the comparison of theory with observations favor suppression of the triplet pairing type of nucleon superfluidity in the neutron-star matter., Comment: 16 pages, 2 tables, 14 figures. We report a 72 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Be/X-ray pulsar (BeXRP) RX J0812.4-3114 in quiescence ($L_X \approx 1.6 \times 10^{33}~\mathrm{erg~s^{-1}}$). Intriguingly, we find a two component spectrum, with a hard power-law ($\Gamma \approx 1.5$) and a soft blackbody-like excess below $\approx 1~\mathrm{keV}$. The blackbody component is consistent in $kT$ with a prior quiescent Chandra observation reported by Tsygankov et al. and has an inferred blackbody radius of $\approx 10~\mathrm{km}$, consistent with emission from the entire neutron star (NS) surface. There is also mild evidence for an absorption line at $\approx 1~\mathrm{keV}$ and/or $\approx 1.4~\mathrm{keV}$. The hard component shows pulsations at $P \approx 31.908~\mathrm{s}$ (pulsed fraction $0.84 \pm 0.10$), agreeing with the pulse period seen previously in outbursts, but no pulsations were found in the soft excess (pulsed fraction $\lesssim 31\%$). We conclude that the pulsed hard component suggests low-level accretion onto the neutron star poles, while the soft excess seems to originate from the entire NS surface. We speculate that, in quiescence, the source switches between a soft thermal-dominated state (when the propeller effect is at work) and a relatively hard state with low-level accretion, and use the propeller cutoff to estimate the magnetic field of the system to be $\lesssim 8.4 \times 10^{11}~\mathrm{G}$. We compare the quiescent thermal $L_X$ predicted by the standard deep crustal heating model to our observations and find that RX J0812.4-3114 has a high thermal $L_X$, at or above the prediction for minimum cooling mechanisms. This suggests that RX J0812.4-3114 either contains a relatively low-mass NS with minimum cooling, or that the system may be young enough that the NS has not fully cooled from the supernova explosion., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of an XMM-Newton observation of the slowly rotating ($P = 3.4$ s), highly magnetized ($B \approx 3 \times 10^{13}$ G) radio pulsar PSR J0726-2612. A previous X-ray observation with the Chandra satellite showed that some of the properties of PSR J0726-2612 are similar to those of the X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars (XDINSs), a small class of nearby slow pulsars characterized by purely thermal X-ray spectra and undetected in the radio band. We confirm the thermal nature of the X-ray emission of PSR J0726-2612, which can be fit by the sum of two blackbodies with temperatures $kT_1 = 0.074_{-0.011}^{+0.006}$ keV and $kT_2 = 0.14_{-0.02}^{+0.04}$ keV and emitting radii $R_1 = 10.4_{-2.8}^{+10.8}$ km and $R_2 = 0.5_{-0.3}^{+0.9}$ km, respectively (assuming a distance of 1 kpc). A broad absorption line modeled with a Gaussian profile centred at $0.39_{-0.03}^{+0.02}$ keV is required in the fit. The pulse profile of PSR J0726-2612 is characterized by two peaks with similar intensity separated by two unequal minima, a shape and pulsed fraction that cannot be reproduced without invoking magnetic beaming of the X-ray emission. The presence of a single radio pulse suggests that in PSR J0726-2612 the angles that the dipole axis and the line of sight make with the rotation axis, $\xi$ and $\chi$ respectively, are similar. This geometry differs from that of the two radio-silent XDINSs with a double peaked pulse profile similar to that of PSR J0726-2612, for which $\xi \sim 90^\circ$ and $\chi \sim 45^\circ$ have been recently estimated. These results strengthen the similarity between PSR J0726-2612 and the XDINSs and support the possibility that the lack of radio emission from the latter might simply be due to an unfavourable viewing geometry., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 10 pages, 10 figures

The role of the symmetry energy on the internal constitution and the global structure of a cold nonaccreted neutron star is studied using a set of unified equations of state. Based on the nuclear energy-density functional theory, these equations of state provide a thermodynamically consistent treatment of all regions of the star and were calculated using the four different Brussels-Montreal functionals BSk22, BSk24, BSk25 and BSk26. The theory of the nuclear energy-density functional is used to provide a unified and thermodynamically consistent treatment of all regions of cold non-accreting neutron stars. In order to assess the impact of our lack of complete knowledge of the density dependence of the symmetry energy on the constitution and the global structure of neutron stars, we employ four different functionals. All of them were precision fitted to essentially all the nuclear-mass data with the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method and two different neutron-matter equations of state based on realistic nuclear forces. For each functional, we calculate the composition, the pressure-density relation, and the chemical potentials throughout the star. We show that uncertainties in the symmetry energy can significantly affect the theoretical results for the composition and global structure of neutron stars. PSR B0943+10 is a mode-switching radio pulsar characterized by two emission modes with different radio and X-ray properties. Previous studies, based on simple combinations of blackbody and power law models, showed that its X-ray flux can be decomposed in a pulsed thermal plus an unpulsed non-thermal components. However, if PSR B0943+10 is a nearly aligned rotator seen pole-on, as suggested by the radio data, it is difficult to reproduce the high observed pulsed fraction unless magnetic beaming is included. In this work we reanalyze all the available X-ray observations of PSR B0943+10 with simultaneous radio coverage, modeling its thermal emission with polar caps covered by a magnetized hydrogen atmosphere or with a condensed iron surface. The condensed surface model provides good fits to the spectra of both pulsar modes, but, similarly to the blackbody, it can not reproduce the observed pulse profiles, unless an additional power law with an ad hoc modulation is added. Instead, the pulse profiles and phase-resolved spectra are well described using the hydrogen atmosphere model to describe the polar cap emission, plus an unpulsed power law. For the X-ray brighter state (Q-mode) we obtain a best fit with a temperature kT~0.09 keV, an emitting radius R~260 m, a magnetic field consistent with the value of the dipole field of 4x10^12 G inferred from the timing parameters, and a small angle between the magnetic and spin axis, $\xi$=5. As a first step toward a multi-phase equation of state for dense water, we develop a temperature-dependent equation of state for dense water covering the liquid and plasma regimes and extending to the super-ionic and gas regimes. This equation of state covers the complete range of conditions encountered in planetary modeling. We use first principles quantum molecular dynamics simulations and its Thomas-Fermi extension to reach the highest pressures encountered in giant planets several times the size of Jupiter. Using these results, as well as the data available at lower pressures, we obtain a parametrization of the Helmholtz free energy adjusted over this extended temperature and pressure domain. The parametrization ignores the entropy and density jumps at phase boundaries but we show that it is sufficiently accurate to model interior properties of most planets and exoplanets. We produce an equation of state given in analytical form that is readily usable in planetary modeling codes and dynamical simulations (a fortran implementation can be found at http://www.ioffe.ru/astro/H2O/). The EOS produced is valid for the entire density range relevant to planetary modeling, for densities where quantum effects for the ions can be neglected, and for temperatures below 50,000K. We use this equation of state to calculate the mass-radius relationship of exoplanets up to 5,000M_Earth, explore temperature effects in ocean and wet Earth-like planets, and quantify the influence of the water EOS for the core on the gravitational moments of Jupiter., Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures. We study the relative importance of several recent updates of microphysics input to the neutron star cooling theory and the effects brought about by superstrong magnetic fields of magnetars, including the effects of the Landau quantization in their crusts. We use a finite-difference code for simulation of neutron-star thermal evolution on timescales from hours to megayears with an updated microphysics input. The consideration of short timescales ($\lesssim1$ yr) is made possible by a treatment of the heat-blanketing envelope without the quasistationary approximation inherent to its treatment in traditional neutron-star cooling codes. For the strongly magnetized neutron stars, we take into account the effects of Landau quantization on thermodynamic functions and thermal conductivities. We simulate cooling of ordinary neutron stars and magnetars with non-accreted and accreted crusts and compare the results with observations. Suppression of radiative and conductive opacities in strongly quantizing magnetic fields and formation of a condensed radiating surface substantially enhance the photon luminosity at early ages, making the life of magnetars brighter but shorter. These effects together with the effect of strong proton superfluidity, which slows down the cooling of kiloyear-aged neutron stars, can explain thermal luminosities of about a half of magnetars without invoking heating mechanisms. Observed thermal luminosities of other magnetars are still higher than theoretical predictions, which implies heating, but the effects of quantizing magnetic fields and baryon superfluidity help to reduce the discrepancy., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures. In particular, we describe recent progress in modeling partially ionized atmospheres of central compact objects in supernova remnants, which may have moderately strong fields $B\sim 10^{10}-10^{11}$ G. We construct new models of outer heat blanketing envelopes of neutron stars composed of binary ion mixtures (H - He, He - C, C - Fe) in and out of diffusive equilibrium. To this aim, we generalize our previous work on diffusion of ions in isothermal gaseous or Coulomb liquid plasmas to handle non-isothermal systems. We calculate the relations between the effective surface temperature Ts and the temperature Tb at the bottom of heat blanketing envelopes (at a density rhob= 1e8 -- 1e10 g/cc) for diffusively equilibrated and non-equilibrated distributions of ion species at different masses DeltaM of lighter ions in the envelope. Our principal result is that the Ts - Tb relations are fairly insensitive to detailed distribution of ion fractions over the envelope (diffusively equilibrated or not) and depend almost solely on DeltaM. The observed rapid cooling of the Cassiopeia A neutron star can be interpreted as being caused by neutron and proton transitions from normal to superfluid and superconducting states in the stellar core. Here we present two new Chandra ACIS-S Graded observations of this neutron star and measurements of the neutron star mass M and radius R found from consistent fitting of both the X-ray spectra and cooling behavior. This comparison is only possible for individual nuclear equations of state. We test phenomenological superfluid and superconducting gap models which mimic many of the known theoretical models against the cooling behavior. There is observational evidence that central compact objects (CCOs) in supernova remnants have moderately strong magnetic fields $B\sim10^{11}$ G. Meanwhile, available models of partially ionized hydrogen atmospheres of neutron stars with strong magnetic fields are restricted to $B\gtrsim10^{12}$ G. We extend the equation of state and radiative opacities, presented in previous papers for $10^{12}\mbox{ G}\lesssim B \lesssim 10^{15}$ G, to weaker fields. An equation of state and radiative opacities for a partially ionized hydrogen plasma are obtained at magnetic fields $B$, temperatures $T$, and densities $\rho$ typical for atmospheres of CCOs and other isolated neutron stars with moderately strong magnetic fields. The first- and second-order thermodynamic functions, monochromatic radiative opacities, and Rosseland mean opacities are calculated and tabulated, taking account of partial ionization, for $3\times10^{10}\mbox{ G}\lesssim B\lesssim 10^{12}$ G, $10^5$ K $\lesssim T\lesssim 10^7$ K, and a wide range of densities. Using 1D and 2D cooling codes we study thermal emission from neutron stars with steady state internal heaters of various intensities and geometries (blobs or spherical layers) located at different depths in the crust. The generated heat tends to propagate radially, from the heater down to the stellar core and up to the surface; it is also emitted by neutrinos. In local regions near the heater the results are well described with the 1D code. The heater's region projects onto the stellar surface forming a hot spot. There are two heat propagation regimes. In the first, conduction outflow regime (realized at heat rates $H_0 \lesssim 10^{20}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ s$^{-1}$ or temperatures $T_\mathrm{h} \lesssim 10^9$ K in the heater) the thermal surface emission of the star depends on the heater's power and neutrino emission in the stellar core. In the second, neutrino outflow regime ($H_0 \gtrsim 10^{20}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ s$^{-1}$ or $T_\mathrm{h} \gtrsim 10^9$ K) the surface thermal emission becomes independent of heater's power and the physics of the core. The largest (a few per cent) fraction of heat power is carried to the surface if the heater is in the outer crust and the heat regime is intermediate. The early 21st century witnesses a dramatic rise in the study of thermal radiation of neutron stars. Modern space telescopes have provided a wealth of valuable information which, when properly interpreted, can elucidate the physics of superdense matter in the interior of these stars. This interpretation is necessarily based on the theory of formation of neutron star thermal spectra, which, in turn, is based on plasma physics and on the understanding of radiative processes in stellar photospheres. In this paper, the current status of the theory is reviewed with particular emphasis on neutron stars with strong magnetic fields. We study the impact of plasma correlation effects on nonresonant thermonuclear reactions for various stellar objects, namely in the liquid envelopes of neutron stars, and the interiors of white dwarfs, low-mass stars, and substellar objects. We examine in particular the effect of electron screening on the enhancement of thermonuclear reactions in dense plasmas within and beyond the linear mixing rule approximation as well as the corrections due to quantum effects at high density. Context. A unified equation of state (EoS) should describe the crust and the core of a neutron star using the same physical model. The Brussels-Montreal group has recently derived a family of such EoSs based on the nuclear energy-density functional theory with generalized Skyrme effective forces, fitted to the available mass data. At the same time, these forces were constrained to reproduce microscopic calculations of homogeneous neutron matter based on realistic two- and three-nucleon forces. Aims. We represent basic physical characteristics of the latest Brussels-Montreal EoS models by analytical expressions to facilitate their inclusion in astrophysical simulations. Methods. We consider three EoS models, which significantly differ by stiffness: BSk19, BSk20, and BSk21. For each of them we constructed two versions of the EoS parametrization. In the first version, pressure P and gravitational mass density \rho are given as functions of the baryon number density n_b. In the second version, P, \rho, and n_b are given as functions of pseudo-enthalpy, which is useful for two-dimensional calculations of stationary rotating configurations of neutron stars. In addition to the EoS, we derived analytical expressions for several related quantities that are required in neutron-star simulations: number fractions of electrons and muons in the stellar core, nucleon numbers per nucleus in the inner crust, and equivalent radii and shape parameters of the nuclei in the inner crust. Results. We obtain analytical representations for the basic characteristics of the models of cold dense matter, which are most important for studies of neutron stars. We demonstrate the usability of our results by applying them to calculations of neutron-star mass-radius relations, maximum and minimum masses, thresholds of direct Urca processes, and the electron conductivity in the neutron-star crust., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 10 tables. We develop an analytical equation of state (EOS) for magnetized fully ionized plasmas, which cover a wide range of temperatures and densities, from low-density classical plasmas to relativistic, quantum plasma conditions. This EOS directly applies to calculations of structure and evolution of strongly magnetized white dwarfs and neutron stars. We review available analytical and numerical results for thermodynamic functions of the nonmagnetized and magnetized Coulomb gases, liquids, and solids. We propose a new analytical expression for the free energy of solid Coulomb mixtures. Based on recent numerical results, we construct analytical approximations for the thermodynamic functions of harmonic Coulomb crystals in quantizing magnetic fields. The analytical description ensures a consistent evaluation of all astrophysically important thermodynamic functions based on the first, second, and mixed derivatives of the free energy. Our numerical code for calculation of thermodynamic functions based on these approximations is made publicly available. Using this code, we calculate and discuss the effects of electron screening and magnetic quantization on the position of the melting point in a range of densities and magnetic fields relevant to white dwarfs and outer envelopes of neutron stars. The goal of this work is to develop a simple analytic description of the emission properties (spectrum and polarization) of the condensed, strongly magnetized surface of neutron stars. We have improved the method of van Adelsberg et al. (2005) (arXiv:astro-ph/0406001) for calculating the spectral properties of condensed magnetized surfaces. Using the improved method, we calculate the reflectivity of an iron surface at magnetic field strengths B \sim (10^{12} - 10^{14}) G, with various inclinations of the magnetic field lines and radiation beam with respect to the surface and each other. We construct analytic expressions for the emissivity of this surface as functions of the photon energy, magnetic field strength, and the three angles that determine the geometry of the local problem. Using these expressions, we calculate X-ray spectra for neutron stars with condensed iron surfaces covered by thin partially ionized hydrogen atmospheres. We develop simple analytic descriptions of the intensity and polarization of radiation emitted or reflected by condensed iron surfaces of neutron stars with strong magnetic fields typical for isolated neutron stars. This description provides boundary conditions at the bottom of a thin atmosphere, which are more accurate than previously used approximations. The spectra calculated with this improvement show absorption features different from those in simplified models. The approach developed in this paper yields results that can facilitate modeling and interpretation of the X-ray spectra of isolated, strongly magnetized, thermally emitting neutron stars., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures. We study the plasma correlation effects on nonresonant thermonuclear reactions of carbon and oxygen in the interiors of white dwarfs and liquid envelopes of neutron stars. We examine the effects of electron screening on thermodynamic enhancement of thermonuclear reactions in dense plasmas beyond the linear mixing rule. Using these improved enhancement factors, we calculate carbon and oxygen ignition curves in white dwarfs and neutron stars. The energy balance and ignition conditions in neutron star envelopes are evaluated, taking their detailed thermal structure into account. The result is compared to the simplified "one-zone model," which is routinely used in the literature. The equation of state (EOS) for partially ionized carbon, oxygen, and carbon-oxygen mixtures at temperatures 3\times10^5 K <~ T <~ 3\times10^6 K is calculated over a wide range of densities, using the method of free energy minimization in the framework of the chemical picture of plasmas. The free energy model is an improved extension of our model previously developed for pure carbon (Phys. Rev. E, 72, 046402; arXiv:physics/0510006). The internal partition functions of bound species are calculated by a self-consistent treatment of each ionization stage in the plasma environment taking into account pressure ionization. The long-range Coulomb interactions between ions and screening of the ions by free electrons are included using our previously published analytical model, recently improved, in particular for the case of mixtures. The data from all observations of RBS 1223 (1RXS J130848.6+212708) conducted by XMM-Newton EPIC pn with the same instrumental setup in 2003-2007 were combined to form spin-phase resolved spectra. A number of complex models of neutron stars with strongly magnetized ($B_{pole} 10^{13}-10^{14}$ G) surface, with temperature and magnetic field distributions around magnetic poles, and partially ionized hydrogen thin atmosphere above it have been implemented into the X-ray spectral fitting package XSPEC for simultaneous fitting of phase-resolved spectra. A Markov-Chain-Monte-Carlo (MCMC) approach is also applied to verify results of fitting and estimating in multi parameter models. The spectra in different rotational phase intervals and light curves in different energy bands with high S/N ratio show a high complexity. The spectra can be parameterized with a Gaussian absorption line superimposed on a blackbody spectrum, while the light curves with double-humped shape show strong dependence of pulsed fraction upon the energy band (13%-42%), which indicates that radiation emerges from at least two emitting areas. A model with condensed iron surface and partially ionized hydrogen thin atmosphere above it allows us to fit simultaneously the observed general spectral shape and the broad absorption feature observed at 0.3 keV in different spin phases of RBS 1223. It allowed to constrain some physical properties of X-ray emitting areas, i.e. the temperatures ($T_{p1} ~ 105$ eV, $T_{p2} ~ 99$ eV), magnetic field strengths ($B_{p1}= B_{p2} ~ 8.6x10^{13}$G) at the poles, and their distributions parameters ($a_{1} 0.61, a_{2} 0.29$, indicating an absence of strong toroidal magnetic field component). In addition, it puts some constraints on the geometry of the emerging X-ray emission and gravitational redshift ($z=0.16^{+0.03}_{-0.01}$) of RBS 1223., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics accepted

We explore the thermal state of the neutron star in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant using the recent result of Ho & Heinke (Nature, 462, 71 (2009)) that the thermal radiation of this star is well-described by a carbon atmosphere model and the emission comes from the entire stellar surface. Starting from neutron star cooling theory, we formulate a robust method to extract neutrino cooling rates of thermally relaxed stars at the neutrino cooling stage from observations of thermal surface radiation. We show how to compare these rates with the rates of standard candles -- stars with non-superfluid nucleon cores cooling slowly via the modified Urca process. We find that the internal temperature of standard candles is a well-defined function of the stellar compactness parameter $x=r_g/R$, irrespective of the equation of state of neutron star matter ($R$ and $r_g$ are circumferential and gravitational radii, respectively). We demonstrate that the data on the Cassiopeia A neutron star can be explained in terms of three parameters: $f_\ell$, the neutrino cooling efficiency with respect to the standard candle; the compactness $x$; and the amount of light elements in the heat blanketing envelope. For an ordinary (iron) heat blanketing envelope or a low-mass ($\lesssim 10^{-13}\,M_\odot$) carbon envelope, we find the efficiency $f_\ell \sim 1$ (standard cooling) for $x \lesssim 0.5$ and $f_\ell \sim 0.02$ (slower cooling) for a maximum compactness $x\approx 0.7$. A heat blanket containing the maximum mass ($\sim 10^{-8}\,M_\odot$) of light elements increases $f_\ell$ by a factor of 50. The X-ray spectra of some magnetized isolated neutron stars (NSs) show absorption features with equivalent widths (EWs) of 50 - 200 eV, whose nature is not yet well known. To explain the prominent absorption features in the soft X-ray spectra of the highly magnetized (B ~ 10^{14} G) X-ray dim isolated NSs (XDINSs), we theoretically investigate different NS local surface models, including naked condensed iron surfaces and partially ionized hydrogen model atmospheres, with semi-infinite and thin atmospheres above the condensed surface. We also developed a code for computing light curves and integral emergent spectra of magnetized neutron stars with various temperature and magnetic field distributions over the NS surface. We compare the general properties of the computed and observed light curves and integral spectra for XDINS RBS\,1223 and conclude that the observations can be explained by a thin hydrogen atmosphere above the condensed iron surface, while the presence of a strong toroidal magnetic field component on the XDINS surface is unlikely. We suggest that the harmonically spaced absorption features in the soft X-ray spectrum of the central compact object (CCO) 1E 1207.4-5209 (hereafter 1E 1207) correspond to peaks in the energy dependence of the free-free opacity in a quantizing magnetic field, known as quantum oscillations. To explore observable properties of these quantum oscillations, we calculate models of hydrogen NS atmospheres with B ~ 10^{10} - 10^{11} G (i.e., electron cyclotron energy E_{c,e} ~ 0.1 - 1 keV) and T_eff = 1 - 3 MK. Such conditions are thought to be typical for 1E 1207. In the X-ray spectra of most X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs) absorption features with equivalent widths (EWs) of 50 -- 200 eV are observed. We theoretically investigate different models to explain absorption features and compare their properties with the observations. We consider various theoretical models for the magnetized neutron star surface: naked condensed iron surfaces and partially ionized hydrogen model atmospheres, including semi-infinite and thin atmospheres above a condensed surface. The properties of the absorption features (especially equivalent widths) and the angular distributions of the emergent radiation are described for all models. A code for computing light curves and integral emergent spectra of magnetized neutron stars is developed. We assume a dipole surface magnetic field distribution with a possible toroidal component and corresponding temperature distribution. A model with two uniform hot spots at the magnetic poles can also be employed. Light curves and spectra of highly magnetized neutron stars with parameters typical for XDINSs are computed using different surface temperature distributions and various local surface models. Spectra of magnetized model atmospheres are approximated by diluted blackbody spectra with one or two Gaussian lines having parameters, which allow us to describe the model absorption features. Some of X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDINS) and central compact objects in supernova remnants (CCO) show absorption features in their thermal soft X-ray spectra. It has been hypothesized that these features could be due to the periodic peaks in free-free absorption opacities, caused by either Landau quantization of electron motion in magnetic fields B<10^{11} G or analogous quantization of ion motion in magnetic fields B>10^{13} G. We briefly review analytic approximations of thermodynamic functions of fully ionized nonideal electron-ion plasmas, applicable in a wide range of plasma parameters, including the domains of nondegenerate and degenerate, nonrelativistic and relativistic electrons, weakly and strongly coupled Coulomb liquids, classical and quantum Coulomb crystals. We present improvements to previously published approximations.
