Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Consortium is developing the new generation of ground observatories for the detection of ultra-high energy gamma-rays. The Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) is participating to the R&D of a possible solution for the Cherenkov photon cameras based on Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) detectors sensitive to Near Ultraviolet (NUV) energies. The latest NUV-HD SiPM technology achieved by the collaboration of INFN with Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) is based on $30\mu\mbox{m}\times30\mu\mbox{m}$ micro-cell sensors arranged in a $6\times6\;\mbox{mm}^2$ area. Single SiPMs produced by FBK have been tested and their performances have been found to be suitable to equip the CTA cameras. Currently, INFN is developing the concept, mechanics and electronics for prototype modules made of 64 NUV-HD SiPMs intended to equip a possible update of the CTA Prototype Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (pSCT) telescope. Abstract

By using an experimental setup based on thin and thick double-sided microstrip silicon detectors, it has been possible to identify the fragmentation products due to the interaction of very high energy primary ions on different targets. Here we report total and partial cross-sections measured at GSI (Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung), Darmstadt, for 500 MeV/n energy $^{12}C$ beam incident on water (in flasks), polyethylene, lucite, silicon carbide, graphite, aluminium, copper, iron, tin, tantalum and lead targets. The results are compared to the predictions of GEANT4 (v4.9.4) and FLUKA (v11.2) Monte Carlo simulation programs., Comment: 10pages, 13figures, 4tables

Abstract

The subsystems of the CMS silicon strip tracker were integrated and commissioned at the Tracker Integration Facility (TIF) in the period from November 2006 to July 2007. As part of the commissioning, large samples of cosmic ray data were recorded under various running conditions in the absence of a magnetic field. Cosmic rays detected by scintillation counters were used to trigger the readout of up to 15\,\% of the final silicon strip detector, and over 4.7~million events were recorded. This document describes the cosmic track reconstruction and presents results on the performance of track and hit reconstruction as from dedicated analyses.

Abstract

This note describes the organization of the mechanical assembly of the nearly 4000 silicon microstrip modules that were constructed in Italy for the Inner Tracker of the CMS experiment. The customization and the calibration of the robotic system adopted by the CMS Tracker community, starting from a general pilot project realized at CERN, is described. The step-by-step assembly procedure is illustrated in detail. Finally, the results for the mechanical precision of all assembled modules are reported.

During summer 2006 a fraction of the CMS silicon strip tracker was operated in a comprehensive slice test called the Magnet Test and Cosmic Challenge (MTCC). At the MTCC, cosmic rays detected in the muon chambers were used to trigger the readout of all CMS sub-detectors in the general data acquisition system and in the presence of the 4 T magnetic field produced by the CMS superconducting solenoid. This document describes the operation of the Tracker hardware and software prior, during and after data taking. The performance of the detector as resulting from the MTCC data analysis is also presented.

Abstract

The Tracker system of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment, will employ approximately 40,000 analog fibre-optic data and control links. The optical readout system is responsible for converting and transmitting the electrical signals coming out from the front-end to the outside counting room. Concerning the inner part of the Tracker, about 3,600 Analog Optohybrid circuits are involved in this tasks. These circuits have been designed and successfully produced in Italy under the responsibility of INFN Perugia CMS group completing the volume production phase by February 2005. Environmental features, reliability and performances of these circuits have been extensively tested and qualified. This paper reviews the most relevant steps of the manufacturing and quality assurance process: from prototypes to mass-production for the final CMS use.

Abstract

A pre-production of 50 analogue opto-hybrid (AOH) circuits to be used in the front-end electronics of the CMS tracker was extensively tested before the incoming start of the massive production. A total of 4000 AOHs are required for the tracker inner barrel (TIB) and inner disk (TID) construction. The electrical response of the TIB/TID AOH pre-production was tested at 25°C both for the static and dynamic behavior. A subset of five AOHs was cooled and tested at -10°C and -15°C. A passive thermal cycle test from -20°C to 25°C was done on a sample of 22 pre-production AOHs, including the previous subset, to measure the mechanical response at possible variations of the nominal tracker temperature of -10°C. Four AOHs from the subset were also kept at -15°C for 20 hours in order to check the long-term stability of the response. The measurements were obtained with the automatic test equip ment (ATE) built for the fast qualification during the massive AOH production and with a custom setup dedicated to the additional tests foreseen only in the pre-production phase. Results of the tests at 25°C are reported and show the very good agreement with the specifications required for the AOH circuit. No mechanical stress, nor electrical response variations were observed after the passive thermal cycles and the AOH behavior at low temperature was also very good and stable.

Different CMS silicon microstrip detectors equipped with the APV6, APV25S0 or APV25S1 readout chips have been exposed to a 350 MeV/c pion or proton beam at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Villigen, CH). We compare the performance of irradiated and non-irradiated silicon sensors as well as the APV6 and APV25 behavior. Various analysis algorithms have been implemented.

Abstract

We have studied the behaviour of a single-sided, 50 micron pitch, AC-coupled, poly-resistor biased silicon detector, processed at CSEM ( Neuchatel, Switzerland) after having been irradiated with a fluence of 10^13 neutrons/cm2 . The irradiation has been performed simulating the CMS silicon tracker data taking environment, with the detectors under bias and the temperature at 0 C. During the july 1996 test beam period we tested the detector at different temperatures ( -10,-5,0,+5,+20 C) as a function of the bias voltage up to 200 V, with the 120 GeV pion beam of X7 area at CERN. On these conditions we measured a S/N ratio of 12-14, efficiency of 98-99 % and a spatial resolution of 11-13 micron.

Abstract

In March 2007 the assembly of the Silicon Strip Tracker was completed at the Tracker Integration Facility at CERN. Nearly 15% of the detector was instrumented using cables, fiber optics, power supplies, and electronics intended for the operation at the LHC. A local chiller was used to circulate the coolant for low temperature operation. In order to understand the efficiency and alignment of the strip tracker modules, a cosmic ray trigger was implemented. From March through July 4.5 million triggers were recorded. This period, referred to as the Sector Test, provided practical experience with the operation of the Tracker, especially safety, data acquisition, power, and cooling systems. This paper describes the performance of the strip system during the Sector Test, which consisted of five distinct periods defined by the coolant temperature. Significant emphasis is placed on comparisons between the data and results from Monte Carlo studies.

Abstract

By using an experimental setup based on thin and thick double-sided microstrip silicon detectors, it has been possible to identify the fragmentation products due to the interaction of very high energy primary ions on different targets. Here we report total and partial cross-sections measured at GSI (Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung), Darmstadt, for 500 MeV/n energy $^{12}C$ beam incident on water (in flasks), polyethylene, lucite, silicon carbide, graphite, aluminium, copper, iron, tin, tantalum and lead targets. The results are compared to the predictions of GEANT4 (v4.9.4) and FLUKA (v11.2) Monte Carlo simulation programs., 10pages, 13figures, 4tables
