Search

Ultra-light axion-like particles (ALPs) can be a viable solution to the dark matter problem. The scalar field associated with ALPs, coupled to the electromagnetic field, acts as an active birefringent medium, altering the polarisation properties of light through which it propagates. In particular, oscillations of the axionic field induce monochromatic variations of the plane of linearly polarised radiation of astrophysical signals. The radio emission of millisecond pulsars provides an excellent tool to search for such manifestations, given their high fractional linear polarisation and negligible fluctuations of their polarisation properties. We have searched for the evidence of ALPs in the polarimetry measurements of pulsars collected and preprocessed for the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) campaign. Focusing on the twelve brightest sources in linear polarisation, we searched for an astrophysical signal from axions using both frequentist and Bayesian statistical frameworks. For the frequentist analysis, which uses Lomb-Scargle periodograms at its core, no statistically significant signal has been found. The model used for the Bayesian analysis has been adjusted to accommodate multiple deterministic systematics that may be present in the data. A statistically significant signal has been found in the dataset of multiple pulsars with common frequency between $10^{-8}$ Hz and $2\times10^{-8}$ Hz, which can most likely be explained by the residual Faraday rotation in the terrestrial ionosphere. Strong bounds on the coupling constant $g_{a\gamma}$, in the same ballpark as other searches, have been obtained in the mass range between $6\times10^{-24}$ eV and $5\times10^{-21}$ eV. We conclude by discussing problems that can limit the sensitivity of our search for ultra-light axions in the polarimetry data of pulsars, and possible ways to resolve them., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures

We present the results of the optical identification and spectroscopic redshift measurements of 216 galaxy clusters detected in the SRG/eROSITA all-sky X-ray survey. The spectroscopic observations were performed in 2020-2023 with the 6-m BTA telescope at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the 2.5-m telescope at the Caucasus Mountain Observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of the Moscow State University, the 1.6-m AZT-33IK telescope at the Sayan Solar Observatory of the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the 1.5-m Russian-Turkish telescope (RTT-150) at the T\"{U}B\.{I}TAK Observatory. For all of the galaxy clusters presented here the spectroscopic redshift measurements have been obtained for the first time. Of these, 139 galaxy clusters have been detected for the first time in the SRG/eROSITA survey and 22 galaxy clusters are at redshifts $z_{spec} \gtrsim 0.7$, including three at $z_{spec} \gtrsim 1$. Deep direct images with the rizJK filters have also been obtained for four distant galaxy clusters at $z_{spec} > 0.7$. For these observations the most massive clusters are selected. Therefore, most of the galaxy clusters presented here most likely will be included in the cosmological samples of galaxy clusters from the SRG/eROSITA survey.

We aim at searching for secular evolution of the orbital period in the short-period binary system WR 127 (WN3b+O9.5V, $P = 9.555^d$). We performed new low-resolution spectroscopic observations of WR 127 on 2.5-m CMO SAI telescope to construct the radial velocity curves of the components suggesting the component masses $M_\mathrm{WR}\sin^3(i) = 11.8\pm1.4$ $M_{\odot}$, $M_\mathrm{O}\sin^3(i)=17.2\pm1.4$ $M_{\odot}$. The comparison with archival radial velocity curves enabled us to calculate the $(O-C)$ plot with accuracy sufficient to search for the orbital period change in WR 127. We report on the reliable detection of a secular increase in the orbital period of WR 127 at a rate of $\dot{P} = 0.83\pm0.14~\mbox{s~yr}^{-1}$ corresponding to the dynamical mass-loss rate from the WR star $\dot{M}_\mathrm{WR} = (2.6\pm0.5)\times 10^{-5}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. The mass-loss rate from WR stars in three WR+OB binaries (WR 127, CX Cep and V444 Cyg) as inferred from spectroscopic and photometric measurements suggests a preliminary empirical correlation between the WR star mass and the dynamical mass-loss rate $\dot M_\mathrm{WR}\sim M_\mathrm{WR}^{1.8}$. This relation is important for the understanding of the evolution of massive close binaries with WR stars -- precursors of gravitational-wave binary merging events with neutron stars and black holes., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Stellar evolution theory predicts the existence of He-core remnants of the primary components of intermediate-mass close binaries that lost most of their H/He envelopes due to the mass exchange. They are expected to be observed as (1-7) solar mass hot He-rich stars located in the HRD between sdO/B and WR-stars. Several thousands of such stars are expected to exist in the Galaxy, but none of them have been identified so far. We aim to provide comprehensive predictions of the numbers and fundamental properties of He-stars and their companions in the Galaxy. This is a necessary first step to guide observations, to enable a comparison between evolutionary models and observed populations, and to determine the feedback of He-stars in the Galaxy. We expanded the previously considered space of parameters describing progenitors of He-stars and applied a population synthesis based on a grid of models computed by the code MESA. The estimated number of Galactic binaries hosting (1-7) solar mass He-stars is about 20000; it declines to about 3000 for mass exceeding two solar ones. The decisive factor that defines the number of He-stars is runaway mass loss after Roche lobe overflow by primary components, resulting in formation of common envelopes and merger of components. He-stars are much less numerous than expected, since a fraction of close binaries with primary masses below (5-7) solar ones produce subdwarfs with masses below solar. Overwhelming majority of He-stars reside in binaries with an early-type companions and can be identified neither by the UV excess nor by emission features. The large periods of a significant fraction of binaries hosting stripped stars (exceeding several hundred days) also hamper their discovery. We report on the results of a Chandra observation of the source IGRJ16327-4940, suggested to be a high mass X-ray binary hosting a luminous blue variable star (LBV). The source field was imaged by ACIS-I in 2023 to search for X-ray emission from the LBV star and eventually confirm this association. No X-ray emission is detected from the LBV star, with an upper limit on the X-ray luminosity of L$_{\rm 0.5-10 keV}<2.9(^{+1.6} _{-1.1})\times10^{32}$ erg/s (at the LBV distance d=12.7$^{+3.2} _{-2.7}$ kpc). We detected 21 faint X-ray sources, 8 of which inside the INTEGRAL error circle. The brightest one is the best candidate soft X-ray counterpart of IGRJ16327-4940, showing a hard power law spectrum and a flux corrected for the absorption UF$_{\rm 0.5-10 keV}$=$2.5\times10^{-13}$ erg/cm2/s, mplying a luminosity of $3.0\times10^{33}$ d$_{10~kpc}^2$ erg/s. No optical/near-infrared counterparts have been found. Previous X--ray observations of the source field with Swift/XRT and ART-XC did not detect any source consistent with the INTEGRAL position. These findings exclude the proposed LBV star as the optical association, and pinpoint the most likely soft X-ray counterpart. In this case, the source properties suggest a low mass X-ray binary, possibly a new member of the very faint X-ray transient class., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables. We present the results of new photometric and spectroscopic observations of WN5+O6 binary V444 Cyg and a detailed analysis of extant spectroscopy and photometry. Using elements of the spectroscopic orbit and assuming e = 0, i = 78{\deg} we determined the masses and orbit sizes of the components of V444 Cyg M_O6 = 26.4 M_Sun, M_WN5 = 10.7 M_Sun, a_O6 = 10.6 R_Sun, a_WN5 = 26.1 R_Sun. Based on new and archival light curves and by applying the Hertzsprung method, we improved the photometrical estimate of secular increase rate of the orbital period in V444 Cyg dP/dt_ph = 0.119+-0.003 s/yr. From the comparison of the new and archival radial velocity curves of V444 Cyg we independently derived the secular orbital period change rate dP/dt_sp = 0.147+-0.032 s/yr, in agreement with the photometrical dP/dt_ph. The obtained secular increase rate of the binary orbital period dP/dt and the mean radii of the components enabled us to estimate the stellar wind mass-loss rate from WR star dM/dt_WN5 = -(6.0+-0.4)*10^-6 M_Sun/yr., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Neutron stars accreting from OB supergiants are often divided between persistently and transiently accreting systems, called Supergiant X-ray Binaries (SgXBs) and Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs). This dichotomy in accretion behaviour is typically attributed to systematic differences in the massive stellar wind, binary orbit, or magnetic field configuration, but direct observational evidence for these hypotheses remains sparse. To investigate their stellar winds, we present the results of pilot 100-GHz observations of one SFXT and one SgXB with the Northern Extended Millimetre Array. The SFXT, IGR J18410-0535, is detected as a point source at $63.4 \pm 9.6$ $\mu$Jy, while the SgXB, IGR J18410-0535 remains undetected. Radio observations of IGR J18410-0535 imply a flat or inverted low-frequency spectrum, arguing for wind emission and against non-thermal flaring. Due to the uncertain SFXT distance, however, the observations do not necessarily imply a difference between the wind properties of the SFXT and SgXB. We compare the mm constraints with other HMXBs and isolated OB supergiants, before considering how future mm campaigns can constrain HMXB wind properties by including X-ray measurements. The European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) and Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) collaborations have measured a low-frequency common signal in the combination of their second and first data releases respectively, with the correlation properties of a gravitational wave background (GWB). Such signal may have its origin in a number of physical processes including a cosmic population of inspiralling supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs); inflation, phase transitions, cosmic strings and tensor mode generation by non-linear evolution of scalar perturbations in the early Universe; oscillations of the Galactic potential in the presence of ultra-light dark matter (ULDM). At the current stage of emerging evidence, it is impossible to discriminate among the different origins. Therefore, in this paper, we consider each process separately, and investigate the implications of the signal under the hypothesis that it is generated by that specific process. We find that the signal is consistent with a cosmic population of inspiralling SMBHBs, and its relatively high amplitude can be used to place constraints on binary merger timescales and the SMBH-host galaxy scaling relations. If this origin is confirmed, this is the first direct evidence that SMBHBs merge in nature, adding an important observational piece to the puzzle of structure formation and galaxy evolution. As for early Universe processes, the measurement would place tight constraints on the cosmic string tension and on the level of turbulence developed by first-order phase transitions. Other processes would require non-standard scenarios, such as a blue-tilted inflationary spectrum or an excess in the primordial spectrum of scalar perturbations at large wavenumbers. We present the results of spectroscopic observations of two eclipsing WR+OB-type systems - CQ Cep and CX Cep, performed in 2020-2023 with a low-resolution slit spectrograph TDS ($\lambda\lambda= 3660-7410$\AA, $R = 1300-2500$) on 2.5-m telescope of the SAI MSU Caucasian Mountain Observatory. For CQ Cep, the radial velocity curves of a WN6 star are constructed, the problem of visibility of spectroscopic traces of an OB star is discussed and the components' mass ratio $q\sim 0.6$ is estimated. For CX Cep, the radial velocity curves are constructed for both the WN5 and O5 components enabling their masses and circular orbit elements to be refined. The comparison of the radial velocity curves of these systems obtained in different epochs allowed us to derive the orbital period change rate $\dot{P}$ by the spectroscopic method, which is found to be in good agreement with estimates obtained by comparing the moments of primary eclipse minima: $\dot{P} = -0.0151\pm0.0013$ s yr$^{-1}$ for CQ Cep and $\dot{P} = 0.054\pm0.009$ s yr$^{-1}$ for CX Cep. The prospects of applicability of the spectroscopic dynamical method for studying the orbital evolution of Galactic WR+OB binaries and related objects are considered. Close binary systems consisting of two neutron stars (BNS) emit gravitational waves, that allow them to merge on timescales shorter than Hubble time. It is widely believed, that NS-NS mergers in such systems power short gamma-ray bursts (GRB). Several mechanisms which could lead to electromagnetic energy release prior to a merger have been proposed. We estimate the ability to observe the possible pre-burst emission with telescopes of Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma. M33 X-7 is the only known eclipsing black hole high mass X-ray binary. The system is reported to contain a very massive O supergiant donor and a massive black hole in a short orbit. The high X-ray luminosity and its location in the metal-poor galaxy M33 make it a unique laboratory for studying the winds of metal-poor donor stars with black hole companions and it helps us to understand the potential progenitors of black hole mergers. Using phase-resolved simultaneous HST- and XMM-Newton-observations, we traced the interaction of the stellar wind with the black hole. Our comprehensive spectroscopic investigation of the donor star (X-ray+UV+optical) yields new stellar and wind parameters for the system that differs significantly from previous estimates. In particular, the masses of the components are considerably reduced to 38 for the O-star donor and 11.4 for the black hole. The O giant is overfilling its Roche lobe and shows surface He enrichment. The donor shows a densely clumped wind with a mass-loss rate that matches theoretical predictions. We investigated the wind-driving contributions from different ions and the changes in the ionization structure due to X-ray illumination. Toward the black hole, the wind is strongly quenched due to strong X-ray illumination. For this system, the standard wind-fed accretion scenario alone cannot explain the observed X-ray luminosity, pointing toward an additional mass overflow, which is in line with our acceleration calculations. The X-ray photoionization creates an He II emission region emitting $10^{47}$ ph/s. We computed binary evolutionary tracks for the system using MESA. Currently, the system is transitioning toward an unstable mass transfer phase, resulting in a common envelope of the black hole and donor. Since the mass ratio is q~3.3 and the period is short, the system is unlikely to survive the common envelope, but will rather merge., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

KQVel is a binary system composed of a slowly rotating magnetic Ap star with a companion of unknown nature. In this paper, we report the detection of its radio emission. We conducted a multi-frequency radio campaign using the ATCA interferometer (band-names: 16cm, 4cm, and 15mm). The target was detected in all bands. The most obvious explanation for the radio emission is that it originates in the magnetosphere of the Ap star, but this is shown unfeasible. The known stellar parameters of the Ap star enable us to exploit the scaling relationship for non-thermal gyro-synchrotron emission from early-type magnetic stars. This is a general relation demonstrating how radio emission from stars with centrifugal magnetospheres is supported by rotation. Using KQVel's parameters the predicted radio luminosity is more than five orders of magnitudes lower than the measured one. The extremely long rotation period rules out the Ap star as the source of the observed radio emission. Other possible explanations for the radio emission from KQVel, involving its unknown companion, have been explored. A scenario that matches the observed features (i.e. radio luminosity and spectrum, correlation to X-rays) is a hierarchical stellar system, where the possible companion of the magnetic star is a close binary (possibly of RSCVn type) with at least one magnetically active late-type star. Employing hybrid population synthesis, a model of the population of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULX) in the binary systems with a black hole (BH) accretors is computed. It is compared to the model of the population of ULX with magnetized neutron stars (NS) that can be observed as pulsating ULX (Kuranov et al. 2020). A model of formation of BH is considered, in which their mass is determined by the mass of stellar CO core immediately before the collapse, as well as "delayed" and "rapid" collapse models (Fryer et al. 2012). Possible transiency of ULX due to accretion disks instability is taken into account The parameters and evolution of ULX are computed for the galaxies with constant star formation rate (SFR) and for the ones formed by an instantaneous star formation burst. The maximum number of ULX with BH ($\sim 10$) is reached in the galaxies with stationary $ SFR=10$\msun/yr in $\sim 1$ Gyr after beginning of star formation. ULX which are observed after the end of star formation, are binaries, in which BH and/or NS formed before the completion of star formation, while long-living donors with the mass $\sim$\msun\ continue RLOF or even fill their Roche lobes later. In several Gyr after completion of star formation the number of ULX in the galaxies with mass $M_G=10^{10}$\,\msun\ becomes less than 1 per 10 galaxies, most of them are ULX with NS. In ULX with NS, regardless of the adopted SFR model, dominate persistent sources with the donor overflowing Roche lobe. The number of transient sources is by more than an order of magnitude lower. We model X-ray luminosity functions (XLF) of accreting neutron stars and black holes in $10^{35} \leq L_X \leq 10^{41}$ erg/s range in star-forming galaxies and galaxies with the initial star formation burst. XLFs are obtained by combining a fast generation of compact object+normal star population using the binary population synthesis code BSE and calculation of the subsequent detailed binary evolution by the MESA code. The existence of macroscopic objects from antimatter (antistars) is envisaged in some models of baryogenesis. Searches for antistars has been usually carried out in gamma-rays through hadronic annihilation of matter. In astrophysically plausible cases of the interaction of neutral atmospheres or winds from antistars with ionized interstellar gas, the hadronic annihilation will be preceded by the formation of excited $p\bar p$ and He$\bar p$ atoms. These atoms rapidly cascade down to low levels prior to annihilation giving rise to a series of narrow lines which can be associated with the hadronic annihilation gamma-ray emission. The most significant are L (3p-2p) 1.73 keV line (yield more than 90\%) from $p\bar p$ atoms, and M (4-3) 4.86 keV (yield $\sim 60\% $) and L (3-2) 11.13 keV (yield about 25\%) lines from $^4$He$\bar p$ atoms. These lines can be probed in dedicated observations by forthcoming sensitive X-ray spectroscopic missions XRISM, \textit{Athena, \textit{Lynx}and in wide-field X-ray surveys like SRG/\textit{eROSITA} all-sky survey., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables. During its performance verification phase, the soft X-ray instrument eROSITA aboard the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma(SRG) spacecraft observed large regions in the Magellanic Clouds, where almost 40 known high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs, including candidates) are located. We looked for new HMXBs in the eROSITA data, searched for pulsations in HMXB candidates and investigated the long-term behaviour of the full sample using archival X-ray and optical data. For sources sufficiently bright, a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of their eROSITA data was performed. A source detection analysis of the eROSITA images in different energy bands provided count rates and upper limits for the remaining sources. We report the discovery of a new Be/X-ray binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The transient SRGEt J052829.5-690345 was detected with a 0.2-8.0 keV luminosity of ~10^35 erg/s and exhibits a hard X-ray spectrum, typical for this class of HMXBs. The OGLE I-band light curve of the V~15.7 mag counterpart shows large variations by up to 0.75 mag, which occur quasi periodically with ~511 days. The eROSITA observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud covered 16 Be/X-ray binary pulsars, five of them were bright enough to accurately determine their current pulse period. The pulse periods for SXP 726 and SXP 1323 measured from eROSITA data are ~800 s and ~1006 s, respectively, far away from their discovery periods. Including archival XMM-Newton observations we update the spin-period history of the two long-period pulsars which show nearly linear trends in their period evolution since more than 15 years. The corresponding average spin-down rate for SXP 726 is 4.3 s/yr while SXP 1323 shows spin-up with a rate of -23.2 s/yr. The examination of long-term (1979-2020) photometric observations of SS433 enabled us to discover a non-zero orbital eccentricity of $e=0.05\pm 0.01.$ We have also found evidence for a secular increase in the orbital period at a rate of $\dot P_\mathrm{b}=(1.0\pm0.3)\times10^{-7}$ s s$^{-1}$. The binary orbital period increase rate makes it possible to improve the estimate of the binary mass ratio $q=M_\mathrm{X}/M_\mathrm{V}>0.8$, where $M_\mathrm{X}$ and $M_\mathrm{V}$ are the masses of the relativistic object and the optical star, respectively. For an optical star mass of 10${\rm M}_\odot$, the mass of the relativistic object (a black hole) is $M_\mathrm{X}>8{\rm M}_\odot$. A neutron star in SS433 is reliably excluded because in that case the orbital period should decrease, in contradiction to observations. The derived value of $\dot P_\mathrm{b}$ sets a lower limit on the mass-loss rate in the Jeans mode from the binary system $\gtrsim 7\times 10^{-6} {\rm M}_\odot\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. The discovered orbital ellipticity of SS433 is consistent with the model of the slaved accretion disc tracing the precession of the misaligned optical star's rotational axis., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + Appendix. Context: During the ongoing all-sky survey, the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope on board the SRG observatory should discover new X-ray sources, many of which can be transient. Here we report on the discovery and multiwavelength follow-up of a peculiar X-ray source SRGA J043520.9+552226=SRGe J043523.3+552234 - the high-energy counterpart of the optical transient AT2019wey. Aims: Thanks to its sensitivity and the survey strategy, the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope uncovers poorly studied weak transient populations. Using a synergy with current public optical surveys, we are aiming at revealing the nature of these transients to study its parent populations. The SRGA J043520.9+552226 is the first transient detected by ART-XC which has a bright optical counterpart suitable for further studies. Methods: We have used available public X-ray and optical data and observations with SRG, INTEGRAL, NuSTAR, NICER and ground-based telescopes to investigate the source spectral energy distributions at different phases of the outburst. We report on the results of an XMM-Newton observation of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient (SFXT) IGR J08408-4503 performed in June 2020. The source is composed by a compact object (likely a neutron star) orbiting around an O8.5Ib-II(f)p star, LM Vel. The X-ray light curve shows a very low level of emission, punctuated by a single, faint flare. Analysis of spectra measured during the flare and during quiescence is performed. The quiescent state shows a continuum spectrum well deconvolved to three spectral models: two components are from a collisionally-ionized plasma (with temperatures kT1=0.24 keV and kT2=0.76 keV), together with a power law model (photon index of 2.55), dominating above 2 keV. The X-ray flux emitted at this lowest level is 3.2$\times10^{-13}$ erg/cm2/s (0.5-10 keV, corrected for the interstellar absorption), implying an X-ray luminosity of 1.85$\times10^{32}$ erg/s (at 2.2 kpc). The two temperature collisionally-ionized plasma is intrinsic to the stellar wind of the donor star, while the power law can be interpreted as emission due to residual, low level accretion onto the compact object. The X-ray luminosity contributed by the power law component only, in the lowest state, is (4.8$\pm{1.4})\times10^{31}$ erg/s, the lowest quiescent luminosity detected from the compact object in an SFXT. Thanks to this very faint X-ray state caught by XMM-Newton, X-ray emission from the wind of the donor star LM Vel could be well-established and studied in detail for the first time, as well as a very low level of accretion onto the compact object. The residual accretion rate onto the compact object in IGR J08408-4503 can be interpreted as the Bohm diffusion of (possibly magnetized) plasma entering the neutron star magnetosphere at low Bondi capture rates from the supergiant donor wind at the quasi-spherical radiation-driven settling accretion stage., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables; accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Recent observations of X-ray pulsars at low luminosities allow, for the first time, to compare theoretical models for the emission from highly magnetized neutron star atmospheres at low mass accretion rates ($\dot{M} \lesssim 10^{15}$ g s$^{-1}$) with the broadband X-ray data. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the spectral formation in the neutron star atmosphere at low $\dot{M}$ and to conduct a parameter study of physical properties of the emitting region. We obtain the structure of the static atmosphere, assuming that Coulomb collisions are the dominant deceleration process. The upper part of the atmosphere is strongly heated by the braking plasma, reaching temperatures of 30-40 keV, while its denser isothermal interior is much cooler (~2 keV). We numerically solve the polarized radiative transfer in the atmosphere with magnetic Compton scattering, free-free processes, and non-thermal cyclotron emission due to possible collisional excitations of electrons. The strongly polarized emitted spectrum has a double-hump shape that is observed in low-luminosity X-ray pulsars. A low-energy "thermal" component is dominated by extraordinary photons that can leave the atmosphere from deeper layers due to their long mean free path at soft energies. We find that a high-energy component is formed due to resonant Comptonization in the heated non-isothermal part of the atmosphere even in the absence of collisional excitations. The latter, however, affect the ratio of the two components. A strong cyclotron line originates from the optically thin, uppermost zone. A fit of the model to NuSTAR and Swift/XRT observations of GX 304-1 provides an accurate description of the data with reasonable parameters. eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) instrument onboard the Russian-German `Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma' (SRG) mission observed the Her X-1/HZ Her binary system in multiple scans over the source during the first and second SRG all-sky surveys. Both observations occurred during a low state of the X-ray source when the outer parts of the accretion disk blocked the neutron star from view. The orbital modulation of the X-ray flux was detected during the low states. We argue that the detected X-ray radiation results from scattering of the emission of the central source by three distinct regions: (a) an optically thin hot corona with temperature $\sim (2-4) \times 10^6$ K above the irradiated hemisphere of the optical star; (b) an optically thin hot halo above the accretion disk; and (c) the optically thick cold atmosphere of the optical star. Bulk of various astronomical observations of black holes suggest that virtually all observed black holes can be of primordial origin. A modified mechanism of the primordial black hole formation is described. The Transient Double-beam Spectrograph (TDS) is designed for optical low-resolution observations of non-stationary and extragalactic sources with the 2.5-m telescope of Caucasus Mountain Observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute. It operates simultaneously in a short-wavelength (360--577 nm, reciprocal dispersion 1.21 A/pixel, resolving power R=1300 with a 1 arcsec slit) and long-wavelength (567--746 nm, 0.87 A/pixel, R=2500) channels. The light is split by a dichroic mirror with a 50% transmission at 574 nm. In the "blue" channel, the automatic replacement of the grating by a grism with a double resolving power is possible. Two CCD-cameras use E2V 42-10 detectors cooled down to $-70^\circ$C with a readout noise of 3 $e-$ at a readout rate of 50 kHz. The spectrograph is equipped with a back slit viewer camera and a calibration unit allowing to record a comparison spectrum from a hollow cathode lamp for wavelength calibration or from an LED source with a continuous spectrum (the "flat field") to take into account the vignetting and uneven slit illumination. The throughput of the entire optical path without slit loss is 20% at the zenith in the "blue" and 35% in the "red" channel. Excluding the atmosphere and the telescope, the efficiency of the TDS itself reaches a maximum of 47% and 65% respectively. The spectrograph is permanently mounted in the Cassegrain focus of the 2.5-m telescope of CMO SAI MSU sharing the port with a wide-field photometric CCD-camera. The spectrograph is fed by the light from a folding mirror introduced into the optical path. A model of population of ultraluminous X-ray sources with magnetised neutron stars (NULX) in a spiral galaxy with the star formation history similar to that in the thin disc of Milky Way is computed using a hybrid approach. First, applying analytical approximations (code BSE) we construct the ensemble of close binaries (CBS) which can be potential precursors of NULX. Next, evolution with accretion onto magnetised neutron stars (NS) is computed by the evolutionary code MESA. Accretion rate onto NS and X-ray luminosity are calculated for the models of sub- and supercritical discs and for the discs with advection. During accretion onto magnetised NS, super-Eddington luminosity $L_\mathrm{X}>10^{38}$ erg~s$^{-1}$ is attained already at the subcritical stage, when the energy release at the inner boundary of the disc defined by the NS magnetosphere is sub-Eddington. It is shown that standard evolution of CBS with an account of the peculiarities specific for accretion onto magnetised NS allows us to explain quantitatively observed characteristics of NULX (X-ray luminosities, NS spin periods, orbital periods and masses of visual components) without additional model assumptions on the collimation of X-ray emission from NS with high observed super-Eddington luminosity. In a model galaxy with star formation rate 3--5 $M_\odot {\rm yr^{-1}}$ there can exist several NULX. Discovery of a powerful wind from NULX with $L_{\mathrm X} \sim 10^{41}$ erg~s$^{-1}$ would be a signature of super-Eddington accretion onto magnetised NS., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures. The X-ray binary Her X-1 consists of an accreting neutron star and the optical component HZ Her. The 35-day X-ray superorbital variability of this system is known since its discovery in 1972 by the Uhuru satellite and is believed to be caused by forced precession of a warped accretion disk tilted to the orbital plane. We argue that the observed features of the 35-day optical variability of HZ Her can be explained by free precession of the neutron star with a period close to that of the forced disk. The model parameters include a) the X-ray luminosity of the neutron star; b) the optical flux from the accretion disk; c) the tilt of the inner and outer edges of the accretion disk. We report the discovery of a nearby massive white dwarf with He-H atmosphere. The white dwarf is located at a distance of $74.5\pm0.9$ pc. Its radius, mass, effective temperature, H/He ratio and age are $R=2500\pm100$ km, $M=1.33\pm0.01$ $\rm M_{\odot}$, $T_{\mathrm{eff}}=31200\pm 1200$ K, ${\mathrm{H/He}}\sim0.1$ and $330\pm40$ Myr, respectively. The observed spectrum is redshifted by $V_{\mathrm{r}}=+240\pm15$ km s$^{-1},$ which is mostly attributed to the gravitational redshift. The white dwarf shows a regular stable photometric variability with amplitude $\Delta g\approx0.06^{\mathrm{m}}$ and period $P=353.456$ s suggesting rapid rotation. This massive, hot and rapidly rotating white dwarf is likely to originate from the merging of close binary white dwarf system that avoided explosion in a thermonuclear type Ia supernova at the Carboniferous Period of the Earth history., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, submitted

Seventeen years of hard X-ray observations with the instruments of the INTEGRAL observatory, with a focus on the Milky Way and in particular on the Galactic Centre region, have provided a unique database for exploration of the Galactic population of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). Our understanding of the diverse energetic phenomena associated with accretion of matter onto neutron stars and black holes has greatly improved. We review the large variety of INTEGRAL based results related to LMXBs. In particular, we discuss the spatial distribution of LMXBs over the Galaxy and their X-ray luminosity function as well as various physical phenomena associated with Atoll and Z sources, bursters, symbiotic X-ray binaries, ultracompact X-ray binaries and persistent black hole LMXBs. We also present an up-to-date catalogue of confirmed LMXBs detected by INTEGRAL, which comprises 166 objects. Last but not least, the long-term monitoring of the Galactic Centre with INTEGRAL has shed light on the activity of Sgr A* in the recent past, confirming previous indications that our supermassive black hole experienced a major accretion episode just ~100 years ago. Possible models for the generation of electromagnetic (EM) radiation during the coalescence of neutron star-black hole binaries are considered. The mass of the remnant disk around the black hole during the coalescence of neutron stars and black holes is calculated by taking into account the equation of state for neutron stars and the rotation of the binary components before the coalescence. The parameters of binary systems before the coalescence (the mass ratio, the component rotation, the neutron star magnetic field) are calculated by the population synthesis method. The derived mass of the remnant disk around the black hole after the coalescence is used to estimate the kinetic energy of the relativistic jet launched by the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. A disk mass of more than $\sim 0.05 M_\odot$ required for the formation of short gamma-ray bursts is shown to be obtained in no more than 1-10\% of the coalescences (depending on the equation of state). Less efficient common envelopes (a large parameter $\alpha_{CE}$) lead to a noticeably larger percentage of events with astrophysically interesting EM energy release. For binaries with a large mass ratio, in which a magnetized neutron star is not subjected to tidal disruption before the coalescence, the possibility of the formation of an electrically charged rotating black hole (Wald charge) is considered and estimates of the maximum EM power released by such a black hole after the coalescence are made. The conversion of the emitted gravitational waves into electromagnetic ones in the relativistic lepton plasma generated in coalescing pulsar-black hole binaries at the pre-coalescence stage is discussed., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

Available data on the chirp mass distribution of the coalescing black hole binaries in O1-O3 LIGO/Virgo runs are analyzed and compared statistically with the distribution calculated under the assumption that these black holes are primordial with a log-normal mass spectrum. The theoretically calculated chirp mass distribution with the inferred best acceptable mass spectrum parameters, $M_0=17 M_\odot$ and $\gamma=0.9$, perfectly describes the data. The value of $M_0$ very well agrees with the theoretically expected one. We model the Galactic population of detached binaries that harbor black holes with (0.5-1.7) solar mass companions -- the remnants of case B mass-exchange that rapidly cross Hertzsprung gap after the termination of the Roche-lobe overflow or as He-shell burning stars. Several such binaries can be currently present in the Galaxy. The range of black hole masses in them is about 4 to 10 solar ones, the orbital periods are tens to hundreds day. We report on the results of a NuSTAR observation of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient pulsar IGRJ11215-5952 during the peak of its outburst in June 2017. IGRJ11215-5952 is the only SFXT undergoing strictly periodic outbursts, every 165 days. NuSTAR caught several X-ray flares, spanning a dynamic range of 100, and detected X-ray pulsations at 187.0 s, consistent with previous measurements. The spectrum from the whole observation is well described by an absorbed power-law (with a photon index of 1.4) modified, above 7 keV, by a cutoff with an e-folding energy of 24 keV. A weak emission line is present at 6.4 keV, consistent with Kalpha emission from cold iron in the supergiant wind. The time-averaged flux is 1.5E-10 erg/cm2/s (3-78 keV, corrected for the absorption), translating into an average luminosity of about 9E35 erg/s (1-100 keV, assuming a distance of 6.5 kpc). The NuSTAR observation allowed us to perform the most sensitive search for cyclotron resonant scattering features in the hard X-ray spectrum, resulting in no significant detection in any of the different spectral extractions adopted (time-averaged, temporally-selected, spin-phase-resolved and intensity-selected spectra). The pulse profile showed an evolution with both the energy (3-12 keV energy range compared with 12-78 keV band) and the X-ray flux: a double peaked profile was evident at higher fluxes (and in both energy bands), while a single peaked, sinusoidal profile was present at the lowest intensity state achieved within the NuSTAR observations (in both energy bands). The intensity-selected analysis allowed us to observe an anti-correlation of the pulsed fraction with the X-ray luminosity. Modern astrophysical methods of determination of spins of rotating stellar-mass black hole in close binaries and of supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei are briefly discussed. Effective spins of coalescing binary black holes derived from LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave observations are specially addressed. We consider three types of coalescing binaries: double black holes, black hole-neutron star binaries and primordial double black holes. The effective spins of coalescing astrophysical binary black holes and black holes with neutron stars are calculated for two plausible models of black hole formations from stellar core collapses (without or with additional fallback from the stellar envelope) taking into account the stellar metallicity and star formation rate evolution in the Universe. The calculated distributions do not contradict the reported LIGO/Virgo observations. The low luminosity, X-ray flaring activity, of the sub-class of high mass X-ray binaries called Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients, has been investigated using XMM-Newton public observations, taking advantage of the products made publicly available by the EXTraS project. One of the goals of EXTraS was to extract from the XMM-Newton public archive information on the aperiodic variability of all sources observed in the soft X-ray range with EPIC (0.2-12 keV). Adopting a Bayesian block decomposition of the X-ray light curves of a sample of SFXTs, we picked out 144 X-ray flares, covering a large range of soft X-ray luminosities (1e32-1e36 erg/s). We measured temporal quantities, like the rise time to and the decay time from the peak of the flares, their duration and the time interval between adjacent flares. We also estimated the peak luminosity, average accretion rate and energy release in the flares. The observed soft X-ray properties of low-luminosity flaring activity from SFXTs is in qualitative agreement with what is expected by the application of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability model in accreting plasma near the neutron star magnetosphere. We revisit the determination of binary mass ratio in the Galactic microquasar SS433 based on recent GRAVITY VLTI measurements of mass and angular momentum outflow through a circumbinary disc. The new observations combined with the constancy of the binary orbital period over $\sim 30$ yrs confirm that the mass ratio in SS433 is $q=M_\mathrm{x}/M_\mathrm{v}\gtrsim 0.6$. For the assumed optical star mass $M_\mathrm{v}$ ranging from $\sim 8$ to 15 $M_\odot$ such a mass ratio suggests a low limit of the compact object mass of $M_\mathrm{x}\sim 5-9 M_\odot$, placing the compact object in SS433 as a stellar-mass black hole., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted in MNRAS, Main Journal

Cyclotron lines, also called cyclotron resonant scattering features (CRSF) are spectral features, generally appearing in absorption, in the X-ray spectra of objects containing highly magnetized neutron stars, allowing the direct measurement of the magnetic field strength in these objects. Cyclotron features are thought to be due to resonant scattering of photons by electrons in the strong magnetic fields. The main content of this contribution focusses on electron cyclotron lines as found in accreting X-ray binary pulsars (XRBP) with magnetic fields on the order of several 1012 Gauss. Also, possible proton cyclotron lines from single neutron stars with even stronger magnetic fields are briefly discussed.With regard to electron cyclotron lines, we present an updated list of XRBPs that show evidence of such absorption lines. The first such line was discovered in a 1976 balloon observation of the accreting binary pulsar Hercules X-1, it is considered to be the first direct measurement of the magnetic field of a neutron star. As of today (mid 2018), we list 36 XRBPs showing evidence of one ore more electron cyclotron absorption line(s). A few have been measured only once and must be confirmed (several more objects are listed as candidates). In addition to the Tables of objects, we summarize the evidence of variability of the cyclotron line as a function of various parameters (especially pulse phase, luminosity and time), and add a discussion of the different observed phenomena and associated attempts of theoretical modeling. We also discuss our understanding of the underlying physics of accretion onto highly magnetized neutron stars. Based on our new NuSTAR X-ray telescope data, we rule out any cyclotron line up to 60 keV in the spectra of the high mass X-ray binary 4U2206+54. In particular, we do not find any evidence of the previously claimed line around 30 keV, independently of the source flux, along the spin pulse. The spin period has increased significantly, since the last observation, up to $5750\pm10$ s, confirming the rapid spin down rate $\dot \nu=-1.8\times 10^{-14}$~Hz s$^{-1}$. This behaviour might be explained by the presence of a strongly magnetized neutron star ($B_{\rm s}>$ several times $10^{13}$ G) accreting from the slow wind of its main sequence O9.5 companion., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, Main Journal

The phenomenon of fast radio bursts (FRBs) was discovered in 2007. These are powerful (0.1-100 Jy) single radio pulses with durations of several milliseconds, large dispersion measures, and record high brightness temperatures suggesting coherent emission mechanism. As of time of writing, 32 FRBs were recorded. There is also one repeating source from which already hundreds of bursts have been detected. The FRB rate is estimated to amount up to several thousand per day over the sky, and their isotropic sky distribution likely suggests a cosmological origin. Since the discovery, different hypotheses on the possible FRB nature have been proposed, however up to now the origin of these transient events remains obscure. The most prospective models treat them as being related to a bursting emission from magnetars -- neutron stars whose activity is due to their magnetic field dissipation, -- or as being analogs of giant pulses observed from several radio pulsars . We briefly review main observational properties of fast radio bursts (FRBs) and discuss two most popular hypothesis for the explanation of these enigmatic intense millisecond radio flashes. FRBs most probably originate on extragalactic distances, and their rate on the sky is about a few thousand per day with fluences above $\sim$~1~Jy~ms (or with fluxes larger than few tenths of Jy). Two leading scenarios describing these events include strong flares of magnetars and supergiant pulses of young radio pulsars with large rotational energy losses, correspondingly. At the moment, it is impossible to choose between these models.
