The Tri-Service Microbiome Consortium (TSMC) was founded to enhance collaboration, coordination, and communication of microbiome research among DoD organizations and to facilitate resource, material and information sharing among consortium members, which includes collaborators in academia and industry. The 2023 annual symposium was a hybrid meeting held in Washington DC on 26–27 September 2023 concurrent with the virtual attendance, with oral and poster presentations and discussions centered on microbiome-related topics within five broad thematic areas: 1) Environmental Microbiome Characterization; 2) Microbiome Analysis; 3) Human Microbiome Characterization; 4) Microbiome Engineering; and 5) In Vitro and In Vivo Microbiome Models. Collectively, the symposium provided an update on the scope of current DoD and DoD-affiliated microbiome research efforts and fostered collaborative opportunities. Background and Objective: The data modernization initiative (DMI) is a multi‐year, multi‐billion‐dollar endeavor toward a robust public health information infrastructure. The various DMI projects (interoperability, analytics, workforce, governance) present an opportunity for a learning health system (LHS) framework in public health. The objective is to share an academic‐practice partnership model between the University of Minnesota (UMN) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) in advancing public health informatics (PHI) and its relationship to an LHS model. Methods: The UMN‐MDH partnership was conceptualized in 2018 as a 1‐year pilot with annual renewals through a time/cost‐sharing faculty position with PHI expertise. The partnership focus was decided based on MDH's needs and mutual interests, with the core collaborating faculty (SR) being an embedded researcher at MDH. Responsibilities included supporting electronic case reporting (eCR), interoperability projects, and assisting MDH staff with PHI presentations/publications. The partnership has expanded to PHI workforce development through a national grant and now includes an interest in applying the LHS framework to MDH‐DMI work. Results: The MDH‐DMI team has embarked upon 13 projects for assessment through an LHS approach: systems interoperability projects between MDH and healthcare/local public health (n = 6); systems modernization for MDH programs (n = 5); informatics workforce development (n = 1); and program governance (n = 1). Each project has been evaluated and/or has current/future assessment plans to synthesize learnings and create a feedback loop for iterative improvement. The partnership has been mutually beneficial as it met agreed upon metrics across both institutions. The program's productivity is showcased with shared authorship in 10 peer‐reviewed proceedings/publications, 22 presentations and 16 posters across local/national conferences. Conclusion: The current case report of the UMN‐MDH partnership is a relatively recent exemplar to support tangible LHS demonstration in public health. The 50th annual conference of the North American Thermal Analysis Society is being held jointly with the 8th Baekeland Symposium to bring those communities together. NATAS offers scientists and practitioners the opportunity to explore the frontiers of thermal analysis, rheology, and materials characterization, learn of developments in instrumentation and software, as well as applications in a variety of industrial settings. The Baekeland Symposium has a record of showcasing the latest scientific, technical and industrial innovations in the field of high performance thermosetting polymers. This year is the first joint meeting of the two organizations and is expected to provide opportunities for new collaborations and exchange of ideas. Presentations and posters by renowned scientists and graduate students set the stage for excellent discussions and an ideal environment to learn about state-of-the-art techniques and exciting new developments in thermal analysis and materials research. Background: Increasing students' ability to think critically allows them to engage more fully with psychology material. Objective: The current study used a critical thinking assignment called PsychBusters to examine critical thinking and interest in psychology in two sections of introductory psychology designated for first-year psychology majors. Method: The experimental section completed two PsychBusters presentations including a poster presentation. The control course section also completed poster presentations but did not do the PsychBusters assignment. For both sections, critical thinking skills and levels of interest in psychology were measured at the start and end of the semester. Results: Students in both sections maintained a high interest in psychology across the semester. The section that worked on the PsychBusters misconception assignment had similar critical thinking skills as the control at the start of the semester but had higher scores at the posttest. Conclusion: Assignments that direct students to focus on critical thinking may not improve one's interest in psychology. However, class assignments that hone critical thinking skills should be integrated into psychology courses with the aim of improving students' reasoning. The Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA) 2023 annual meeting started with the trainee symposium. This symposium showcased the exceptional research activities of dermatology and rheumatology trainees in the field of psoriatic diseases (PsDs). The following report is a summary account of the 5 oral presentations and 21 poster presentations that earned the privilege of being featured at our annual meeting. These presentations span a comprehensive spectrum, encompassing basic/translational, clinical, and outcomes research, which collectively underscore GRAPPA’s profound impact on both national and international fronts in the realm of PsDs. Introduction: Primarily used as ultrasound contrast agents, microbubbles have recently emerged as a versatile therapeutic vector that can be 'burst' to deliver payloads in the presence of suitably optimised ultrasound fields. Ultrasound‐stimulated microbubbles (USMB) have recently demonstrated improvements in treatment outcomes across a variety of clinical applications. This scoping review investigates whether this potential translates into the context of radiation therapy by evaluating the application of this technology across all three phases of radiation action. Methods: Primary research articles, excluding poster presentations and conference proceedings, were identified through systematic searches of the PubMed NCBI/Medline, Embase/OVID, Web of Science and CINAHL/EBSCOhost databases, with additional articles identified via manual Google Scholar searching. Articles were dual screened for inclusion using the Covidence systematic review platform and classified against all three phases of radiation action. Results: Overall, 57 eligible publications from a total of 1389 identified articles were included in the review, with studies dating back to 2012. Study heterogeneity prevented formal statistical analysis; however, most articles reported improved outcomes using USMB in the presence of radiation compared to that of radiation alone. These improvements appear to result from the use of USMB as either a biovascular disruptor causing tumour cell damage via indirect mechanisms, or as a localised treatment vector that directly increases tumour cell uptake of other therapeutic and physical agents designed to enhance radiation action. Conclusions: USMB demonstrate exciting potential to enhance the effects of radiation treatments due to their versatility and capacity to target all three phases of radiation action. Medical students are increasingly seeking out research opportunities to build their skills and network with future colleagues. Medical student-led conferences are an excellent endeavor to achieve this goal. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons student chapter at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell designed an in-person medical student research symposium alongside the Northwell Health Department of Neurosurgery. Postconference feedback forms were sent out digitally to student attendees to evaluate event planning and execution and responses were given on a scale of 1–5 (5 being the highest score). In December 2023, the Northeast Medical Student Research Symposium was held with over 80 participants and 52 medical student presenters. Keynote speakers delivered lectures geared toward students interested in neurosurgery and neuroscience research, followed by an interactive poster board session and resident/attending networking dinner. After the conference, students affirmed that they learned more about neuroscience research after the event (mean: 4.3), were more inclined to attend other neuroscience research events in the future (mean: 4.7), and would attend this event if held next year (mean: 4.8). The poster sessions (mean: 4.75) and keynote lectures (mean: 5) were the highest rated events, while the resident/attending networking dinner (mean: 3.6) was a potential area for improvement. Regional in-person conferences are an excellent way to foster interest in neurosurgery and neuroscience research, network with like-minded peers, and prepare students for presentations at national meetings. Purpose of the Study: After two years of virtual meetings, the Barrels Meeting resumed to an in-person format on 10 and 11 November 2022 in La Jolla California. Materials and Methods: The meeting focused on the rodent sensorimotor system, with a focus on integrated information from the cellular to the systems level. A series of invited and selected oral presentations were delivered in addition to a poster session. Results: The latest results in the whisker-to-barrel pathway were discussed. Presentations included how the system encodes peripheral information, motor planning, and is disrupted in neurodevelopmental disorders. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is increasingly adopted globally, including in Taiwan's educational initiatives, yet challenges remain in implementing effective CLIL practices, such as pedagogy and curriculum design. This study investigated the effectiveness of multimodal task designs, combining hands-on learning with poster presentations, in enhancing oral communicative competence within CLIL contexts. Employing a mixed-methods, quasi-experimental design with a comparative case study framework, the study assessed English oral communicative competence in four intact fourth-grade Taiwanese CLIL Social Studies classes. The hands-on learning group (EG, n = 40) engaged in activities like Chinese Dumpling Making, Bird's Nest Building, and Succulent Pot Designing, while the non-hands-on learning group (CG, n = 34) used traditional worksheets on the same topics. Both groups proceeded to poster presentations within their multimodal task design, where students' oral communicative competence was assessed using rubrics developed based on Coyle's 4Cs dimensions, focusing on Content, Communication, and Cognition. Additionally, students' cultural knowledge related to the hands-on topics was evaluated through written tests. To complement the quantitative data, qualitative data from self-reported reflections and video recordings documenting interventions were collected for the assessment of oral communicative competence within a CLIL framework. Results demonstrate that integrating hands-on activities significantly enhanced procedural content, communication (i.e., sentence complexity, pronunciation accuracy for target vocabulary, presentation fluency), and cognitive abilities, confirming the efficacy of multimodal learning approaches in fostering linguistic and cognitive engagement. Post-test comparisons show the EG's superiority in cultural knowledge acquisition across all three hands-on topics. Student reflections endorsed the enrichment of learning experiences through multimodal task design. Video analysis of both groups' interventions revealed that despite significant engagement and autonomy, EG students commonly utilized general English rather than target vocabulary, a pattern similar to that observed in the CG. These findings highlight the potential of diverse modalities in CLIL to enhance English content learning and oral skills, shaping future pedagogy and language strategies in Taiwan. The study also emphasizes the role of embodied learning, the interplay between physical actions and cognitive processes, to facilitate deeper understanding and engagement with subject matter within CLIL settings. The Center of Excellence in Marine Biotechnology, Sultan Qaboos University had successfully organized the "Third GCC Marine Biotechnology Conference: Emerging opportunities and future perspectives". This conference was held virtually from 8 to 9 December 2021. The main objectives of the conference were to share scientific results between researchers and promote marine biotechnology in the region. In total, 27 oral and 12 poster presentations were delivered during the conference. The conference had 40 participants from different countries. The 36th International Mammalian Genome Conference (IMGC) was held in a hybrid format at the Tsukuba International Congress Center in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan, for 4 days from March 28 to 31, 2023. This international conference on functional genomics of mouse, human, and other mammalian species attracted 246 participants in total, of which 129 were from outside Japan, including Europe, the United States and Asia, and 117 participants were from Japan. The conference included three technical workshops, keynote lectures by domestic researchers, commemorative lectures for the conference awards, 57 oral presentations, and 97 poster presentations. The event was a great success. Topics included the establishment and analysis of disease models using genetically engineered or spontaneous mutant mice, systems genetic analysis using mouse strains such as wild‐derived mice and recombinant inbred mouse strains, infectious diseases, immunology, and epigenetics. In addition, as a joint program, a two‐day RIKEN Symposium was held, and active discussions continued over the four‐day period. Over the past decade, there has been a growing appreciation of metascience issues in psychological science. Using data collected from 2615 posters presented at the 2021 biennial meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development, this article examines the use of transparent research practices to increase rigor and reproducibility as well as generalizability through greater inclusivity of diverse samples. Research presented through poster presentations was heavily skewed toward quantitative studies featuring American researchers using Western hemisphere samples. Sharing of data/materials, preregistrations, and replications were uncommon. During a time when governments are increasingly requiring more open practices and access, this research provides an important baseline by which developmental science can benchmark progress toward the goals of greater inclusivity and openness. The 10th International MDM2 Workshop was held at the National Cancer Center Research Institute (NCCRI) in Tokyo, Japan, from October 15 to 18, 2023. It attracted 166 participants from 12 countries. The meeting featured 52 talks and 41 poster presentations. In the first special session, six invited speakers gave educational and outstanding talks on breakthroughs in MDM2 research. Three keynote speakers presented emerging p53‐independent functions of MDM2/MDM4, functional association of MDM2/p53 with cancer immunity, and drug discovery targeting the MDM2/MDM4‐p53 pathway. Additionally, 19 invited speakers introduced their new findings. Twenty‐one presenters, many of whom were young investigators, postdocs, and students, were selected from submitted abstracts and reported their exciting and unpublished results. For poster presenters, outstanding poster awards were given to the best presenters. There were many inspiring questions and discussions throughout the meeting. Social events like a welcome party, a workshop dinner, and an optional tour enabled further scientific interactions among the participants. The meeting successfully provided an exciting platform for scientific exchange. On behalf of the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology, we are pleased to present the Abstracts from the 2024 Annual Conference, titled "Building Hope: Integrating Sustainable, Innovative and Accessible Care in Psychosocial Oncology". The Conference was held in Calgary from 6 June 2024 to 7 June 2024. This conference brought together key stakeholders including multidisciplinary professionals from nursing, psychology, psychiatry, social work, spiritual care, nutrition, medicine, rehabilitation medicine, occupational health and radiation therapy for both adult and pediatric populations. Participants included clinicians, researchers, educators in cancer care, community-based organizations and patient representatives. Patients, caregivers and family members presented abstracts that speak to their role in managing cancer experiences and care. Over one hundred (150) abstracts were selected for presentation as symposia, 20 min oral presentations, 10 min oral presentations, 90 min workshops and poster presentations. On behalf of Cell Therapy Transplant Canada (CTTC), we are pleased to present the Abstracts of the CTTC 2023 Annual Conference. The conference was held in-person, 31 May–2 June 2023, in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the Westin Nova Scotian hotel. Poster authors presented their work during a lively and engaging welcome reception on Thursday, 1 June, and oral abstract authors were featured during the oral abstract session in the afternoon of Friday, 2 June 2023. Twenty-three (23) abstracts were selected for presentation as posters and four (4) as oral presentations. Abstracts were submitted within four categories: (1) Basic/Translational Sciences, (2) Clinical Trials/Observations, (3) Laboratory/Quality, and (4) Pharmacy/Nursing/Other Transplant Support. The top four (4) oral abstracts and top four (4) poster abstracts were selected to receive an award. All of these were marked as "Award Recipient" within the relevant category. The ninth annual international G-CAN research symposium was held in La Jolla, CA on the 7th and 8th of November 2023. This hybrid meeting, a live face-to-face and virtual live symposium, was attended by 191 participants. Over 20 research abstract submissions were received from early-career investigators, for plenary oral and poster presentations. Here, we present the 20 accepted, lightly edited abstracts from the early-career presenters consenting to have their materials published. The Swiss Journal of Geosciences has published a special issue on the 15th Emile Argand Alpine Workshop, which took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2022. The conference aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the peri-Mediterranean orogenic system and the processes shaping the orogens. The workshop included field trips, invited speakers, and presentations on various geological topics. The special issue includes five articles, four of which focus on the transitional area between the Alps, Dinarides, and Western Carpathians. The articles cover topics such as tectonic complexities, geochronology, volcanic rocks, and structural analysis. The communication of scientific findings often concludes the research experience, but few science programs include explicit undergraduate curricula for practicing oral science communication. While course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) can provide opportunities for students to practice science communication, few studies describe or assess authentic oral science communication activities within CUREs, and fewer do so under pandemic conditions. Little evidence exists describing how science communication activities impact students' science identity and science communication self-efficacy, specifically regarding research posters. To address this topic, we collected students' quantitative and qualitative perceptions of science identity and science communication self-efficacy in a face-to-face (F2F) CURE and collected students' qualitative perceptions of presenting their research at a F2F poster symposium during the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that students' science identity and science communication self-efficacy improved significantly, and we identified benefits and complaints about presenting research F2F during the pandemic—namely, a stimulating presentation atmosphere, face coverings as communication barriers and comforts, and audience type informing presentation confidence. The study on burnout among parents of children with complex care needs found that it is characterized by long-term and recurring stress, a deterioration in physical and cognitive health, and a constant state of heightened alertness and control. The 2nd International FEBS‐IUBMB‐ENABLE Molecular Biosciences PhD and Postdoc Conference was held from 23rd to 25th November 2023 in Cologne, Germany. Over 240 participants from 31 different countries came together at the University of Cologne to follow the two‐day scientific symposium and the career day. This year's topic was "The emerging challenge – environmental impacts on human health". In four different sessions, eight renowned keynote speakers presented their current research. By offering flash and short talks, 39 participants were able to present their work in front of a big audience. Scientific exchange and networking were encouraged during the two poster sessions, during breaks, and the conference dinner. On the Career Day, a career fair was held and participants could attend workshops as well as career chats to improve their job prospects. The success of the series will be continued during the next conference edition: "Artificial Intelligence – Reshaping biomedical and healthcare research", which will take place 4th to 6th December 2024 in Singapore. The use of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) for treatment of pediatric hydrocephalus has higher failure rates in younger patients. Here we investigate the impact of select perioperative variables, specifically gestational age, chronological age, birth weight, and surgical weight, on ETV failure rates. A retrospective review was performed on patients treated with ETV - with or without choroid plexus cauterization (CPC) - from 2010 to 2021 at a large academic center. Analyses included Cox regression for independent predictors and Kaplan-Meier survival curves for time to-event outcomes. In total, 47 patients were treated with ETV; of these, 31 received adjunctive CPC. Overall, 66% of the cohort experienced ETV failure with a median failure of 36 days postoperatively. Patients aged < 6 months at time of surgery experienced 80% failure rate, and those > 6 months at time of surgery experienced a 41% failure rate. Univariate Cox regression analysis showed weight at the time of ETV surgery was significantly inversely associated with ETV failure with a hazard ratio of 0.92 (95% CI 0.82, 0.99). Multivariate analysis redemonstrated the inverse association of weight at time of surgery with ETV failure with hazard ratio of 0.76 (95% CI 0.60, 0.92), and sensitivity analysis showed < 4.9 kg as the optimal cutoff predicting ETV/CPC failure. Neither chronologic age nor gestational age were found to be significantly associated with ETV failure.In this study, younger patients experienced higher ETV failure rates, but multivariate regression found that weight was a more robust predictor of ETV failure than chronologic age or gestational age, with an optimal cutoff of 4.9 kg in our small cohort. Given the limited sample size, further study is needed to elucidate the independent role of weight as a peri-operative variable in determining ETV candidacy in young infants. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate whether the changing associate professorship criteria makes a difference in the scientific presentations in terms of author number, presentation type and scientific research type in The Turkish National Congress of (ORL-HNS). Material and Methods: The Turkish National Congress of ORL-HNS held in the 3 years before and after the change of criteria for associate professorship were included in the study. For evaluation, past congress proceedings books on the website of the Turkish Ear-Nose-Throat Head and Neck Surgery Association were used. Results: When oral presentations were evaluated according to the number of authors per study, the number of study by a single author was 50 (8.7%) in the period after the change in criteria and 10 (2.0%) in the period before. When oral presentations were evaluated according to the type of study, the number of retrospective studies increased significantly after the varying criteria compared to before When the poster presentations were evaluated according to the number of authors per study, there was no statistically significant difference in the number of studies by a single author between the 3 years before and after the change of the criteria (p=0.338). Conclusion: The findings of our study do not show that the studies after the changes in the criteria are scientifically less valuable or there are ethical problems in the studies. Background: The nomenclature surrounding the 'flexor digiti minimi brevis' muscle prompts deliberation concerning its accuracy and potential variations. Addressing this uncertainty entails expunging the term 'brevis' from nomenclature references to the muscle, opting instead for the term 'flexor digiti minimi.' This nomenclatural adjustment currently being advocated raises inquiries about the necessity for descriptors denoting the muscle's specific placement along the upper or lower extremities. This study was conducted with a dual objective: to illuminate this topic and consolidate existing research on this issue. Research encompassing the terms 'flexor digiti minimi' OR 'flexor digiti minimi brevis' was screened within this field. The inclusion criteria involved original articles, case reports, case series, relevant books, and book chapters. Excluded from this review were articles mentioning 'flexor digiti minimi' and 'digiti minimi' that were unrelated to the subject, as well as poster presentations, proceedings, conference materials, abstracts, and atlases. Short conclusion: In summary, changing the name of the muscle enhances anatomical understanding, promotes clarity and precision in communication, facilitates research efforts, and helps prevent confusion in medical education and clinical practice. The global nonprofit organization PATH hosted the third Vaccines Against Shigella and Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VASE) Conference in Washington, DC, on November 29 to December 1, 2022. With a combination of plenary sessions and posters, keynote presentations, and breakout workshops, the 2022 VASE Conference featured key updates on research related to the development of vaccines against neglected diarrheal pathogens including Shigella , enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), Campylobacter , and Salmonella. The presentations and discussions highlighted the significant impact of these diarrheal pathogens, particularly on the health of infants and young children in low- and middle-income countries, reflecting the urgent need for the development and licensure of new enteric vaccines. Oral and poster presentations at the VASE Conference explored a range of topics, including: the global burden and clinical presentation of disease, epidemiology, and the impact of interventions; the assessment of the value of vaccines against enteric pathogens; preclinical evaluations of vaccine candidates and models of enteric diseases; vaccine candidates in clinical trials and human challenge models; host parameters and genomics that predict responses to infection and disease; the application of new omics technologies for characterization of emerging pathogens and host responses; novel adjuvants, vaccine delivery platforms, and immunization strategies; and strategies for combination/co-administered vaccines. Objective The North American Skull Base Society (NASBS) multidisciplinary annual conference hosts skull base researchers from across the globe. We hypothesized that the work presented at the NASBS annual conference would reveal diverse authorship teams in terms of specialty and geography. Methods In this retrospective review, abstracts presented at the NASBS annual meeting and subsequently published in the Journal of Neurological Surgery Part B: Skull Base between 01/01/2011 and 12/31/2020 were collected. Variables extracted included year, type of presentation, and author names and affiliations. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS V23.0 with p -values less than 0.05 considered significant. Geographic heat maps were created to assess author distribution, and a network analysis was performed to display authorship collaboration between geographic regions. Results Of 3,312 published abstracts, 731 (22.1%) had an author with an affiliation outside of the United States. Fifty-seven distinct countries were represented. Three-hundred twenty-four abstracts (9.8%) had authorship teams representing at least 2 different countries. The top five US states by abstract representation were Pennsylvania, California, New York, Ohio, and Minnesota. A majority of authors reported neurosurgery affiliations (56.7% first authors, 53.2% last authors), closely followed by otolaryngology (39.1% first authors, 41.5% last authors). No solo authors and very few (3.3%) of the first authors reported a departmental affiliation outside of otolaryngology or neurosurgery. Conclusions Authors from many countries disseminate their work through poster and oral presentations at the NASBS annual meeting.
