- Abstract
Neuropsychosocial Integration: A Practical Approach to Discharging Trauma and Recovering the Authentic Self explores the incidence of psychosocial trauma in ordinary life as it persists across generations. For those who have been exposed in some way to adverse lived experiences and/or protracted psychosocial stress, a manifestation of psychosocial trauma is disintegration in the self and in between the body and mind. Integration can be recovered, along with authenticity in the self and well-being in the body and mind, through the toolkit the author presents in the form of the acronym and metaphoric quiverful of SPEARS: Somato-Psycho-Emotional Attunement and Relational Safety. Featuring case studies, this book holds a specific appeal for graduate-student trauma researchers, therapists, and clinicians, as well as lay individuals exploring their own traumas.

- Abstract
This book explores the effectiveness of art therapy as treatment for cumulative trauma survivors.Bringing together case studies, research, and the author's clinical and personal experience, it outlines different clinical approaches as well as numerous art therapy interventions that are processed through somatic, metaverbal, and narrative means. It further aims to answer the question of “how art therapy works,” by pairing aspects of Lusebrink's Expressive Therapies Continuum with Perry's four functional domains (from the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics) to demonstrate how these practices may increase relational capacity and the patient's access to higher level functioning, in turn, decreasing trauma responses.Foregrounding a person-centered and multi-dimensional approach to trauma repair and creative interventions, this book will appeal to postgraduate students in art therapy and counselling, as well as professionals and researchers in somatic work and trauma specialties.

- Abstract
This book is a practical guide to the evidence-based Cognitive Restructuring (CR) for PTSD program, which has been specifically designed to meet the unique needs of people with serious mental illness. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is very common among persons with serious mental illness (SMI). Unfortunately, it often leads to more severe psychiatric symptoms, greater impairment in psychosocial functioning, poorer physical health, and a higher use of acute care services among people with SMI. Yet despite major advances in the treatment of PTSD in the general population, PTSD has remained underdiagnosed and underaddressed among people with SMI, and treatments for this population have been relatively neglected. This practical, hands-on guide gives clinicians the tools they need for screening, detecting, and treating PTSD in their clients with SMI, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and borderline personality disorder. Chapters summarize research and theory regarding the interaction between PTSD and SMI, provide nuts and bolts strategies for implementing the authors'Cognitive Restructuring for PTSD program, and offer guidance for overcoming clinical challenges to trauma treatment such as psychotic symptoms, low distress tolerance, emotion dysregulation, hopelessness, and cognitive impairment. Chapters also feature in-session dialogues with case vignettes that follow three unique clients as they participate in the CR for PTSD program. Handouts and worksheets for delivering the CR for PTSA program are available in the Appendix of the book as well as in printable versions online (https://www.apa.org/pubs/books/treatment-posttraumatic-stress-disorder-serious-mental-illness) under the Resources tab. These online resources also include the educational handouts and worksheets translated into Spanish, a supplemental chapter on The BREATHE Program: A Brief PTSD Intervention for Persons with SMI in Special Settings, and the BREATHE Treatment Program Manual.

- Abstract
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) remains a significant mental health challenge, with a broad range of causes and complex influencing factors beyond traditional war-related trauma. Despite advancements in understanding, there is still controversy surrounding the efficacy of various treatment approaches, including both conventional methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and non-traditional techniques such as yoga and psychoactive drugs. This complexity highlights the need for a comprehensive resource that not only updates professionals on the latest research but also addresses the diverse causes and manifestations of PTSD, including social, racial, and economic factors. Development and Treatment of PTSD offers a solution by providing up-to-date information, theories, and interventions for PTSD. Unlike many existing resources that focus narrowly on specific traumatic events, this book expands its scope to encompass a wide array of causes, triggers, and contributors to PTSD, including interpersonal dynamics and societal influences. By exploring both traditional and non-traditional interventions, the book equips mental health professionals, medical personnel, and counselors with a holistic understanding of PTSD and its treatment options. This book is essential for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, medical personnel involved in trauma care, and professionals working in clinical and school settings. By offering a comprehensive perspective on PTSD, it not only updates readers on the latest research but also provides practical insights and strategies for intervention. Additionally, the accessible writing style ensures that the book is valuable to the informed public, particularly those interested in understanding and supporting individuals affected by PTSD.

- Abstract
The authoritative presentation of cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is now in a revised and updated second edition, with an easier-to-use format and a new chapter on conceptualizing treatment. From CPT's developers, the manual includes session-by-session implementation guidelines and extensive sample dialogues. Shaded index tabs in the margins help clinicians quickly navigate to each session. The authors explain the theoretical and empirical underpinnings of CPT and discuss ways to work effectively with specific populations, such as combat veterans, sexual assault survivors, and culturally diverse and LGBTQIA+ clients. Forty-eight reproducible handouts can be photocopied from the large-size book or downloaded from the companion webpage. New to This Edition •Each session now has its own chapter, printed with shaded tabs for easy reference. •Reflects a wealth of new treatment research, conceptual refinements, and feedback from trainings of thousands of clinicians. •Chapter on cognitive case conceptualization. •Discusses additional treatment variations (telehealth, intensive CPT) and client populations (first responders). CPT is endorsed as a best practice for the treatment of PTSD by the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). - Abstract
The loss of a loved one can be very painful, with the mourner losing an important source of safety, connection, and life balance. Even when uncomplicated, bereavement can have a significant impact on the mourner. Traumatic circumstances can intensify the grief and complicate the mourning process. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, an evidenced based treatment for trauma, can help process the trauma of the loss and the obstacles that interfere with the grief and mourning process. In this book, Roger M. Solomon guides the EDMR therapist through the treatment process by understanding grief reactions and the mourning process, providing an overall model of EMDR treatment for grief and mourning, and highlighting how EMDR can help a mourner experience a positive sense of connection through heartfelt, meaningful memories. The author presents an integrative model for EMDR therapy treatment based on the Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP), which guides EMDR therapy. Several models of grief and mourning that inform EMDR treatment and a discussion of the eight phases and three prongs (past, present, and future) of EMDR therapy are presented, with many case examples including transcripts of sessions, to illustrate treatment principles and clinical teaching points.

- Subjects
- Exposure therapy, Brief psychotherapy, Post-traumatic stress disorder--Treatment
- Abstract
This second edition provides readers with valuable tools and strategies to use in their clinical practice with trauma survivors with PTSD. Written exposure therapy (WET) is an effective, evidence-based treatment for PTSD that is easy to implement, affordable, and has lower dropout rates than other trauma interventions. In Denise Sloan and Brian Marx's unique approach, the client writes about a single traumatic event, and the therapist focuses on the client's experiences while writing about the trauma, rather than the event itself. This comprehensive manual provides step-by-step instructions for conducting WET with clients who suffer from PTSD. It contains a scripted protocol for WET, along with detailed guidance for conducting each session. Since publication of the first edition, the authors have modified several important aspects of their protocol based on updated research and evidence. In this edition, the authors describe how to deliver WET over telehealth, in a group format, in primary care settings that typically only permit 30-minute sessions, and when using a language translator. New content shows how providers can manage difficult situations that sometimes arise when delivering WET, with valuable case examples that demonstrate key principles and potential outcomes of the WET protocol. This is an essential resource for trauma care providers, as well as graduate students in clinical psychology, counseling, and social work.

Your definitive trauma-sensitive guide to working the Steps: skills for understanding your addiction, processing your trauma, and navigating your recovery journey—the anticipated companion to Trauma and the 12 Steps. This addiction recovery workbook from clinicians Jamie Marich, PhD, and Stephen Dansiger offers skills to prevent relapse, enhance recovery, and understand how trauma impacts alcoholism, drug dependency, and even other types of addictions. Working the Steps for the first time can feel scary and unfamiliar—and depending upon the experiences you've had at AA or NA, you may question whether the 12 Steps are right for you. Here, Marich and Dansiger help you get to the root of your addiction while offering skills and exercises for an inclusive recovery program. Unlike some 12-Step programs, this workbook is open to all—regardless of your background, history, identity, or spiritual beliefs. It also recognizes that for most of us on recovery or sobriety journeys, each Step isn't made to be worked through only once: this workbook is designed to support your individual needs, whether that's practicing one step on a day-to-day basis, revisiting another at different times throughout your recovery process, or using the exercises as part of a yearly check-in. The workbook begins with a self-care inventory, then moves through each of the 12 steps with prompts, meditations, journaling reflections, and body-based exercises. The authors also offer coping skills and an open-minded approach that acknowledges that your recovery is as unique as you are: one-size-fits-all doesn't apply. Compassionate, trauma-responsive, and grounded in the latest behavioral and neuroscience research, this workbook is your go-to addiction recovery toolkit.

PenCraft Book Awards 2023 Non-Fiction Runner Up The world has long misunderstood trauma. Now, leading experts in the field have a radical new understanding of post-traumatic stress... and a surprising new treatment to reverse it could have profound implications for medicine, mental health, and society. Despite its prevalence, post-traumatic stress, PTSD, is often seen as an unbeatable lifelong mental disorder. However, top trauma doctors and neuroscientists now understand that the result of trauma is not a disorder, but rather a physical injury—and while invisible to the naked eye, the posttraumatic stress injury (PTSI) can now be seen on a scan. Most importantly, the effects of PTSI are reversible. Meet Dr. Eugene Lipov. His research and partnerships have led to an amazing discovery that all trauma has at its root a single piece of human hardware: the sympathetic nervous system, controlling the fight-or-flight response. Anyone who has endured trauma, including long-term microdoses of emotional stress, can have this injury. Dr. Lipov has pioneered a safe, 15-minute procedure that reverses the injury, relieving mild to extreme symptoms of PTSI—irritability, hypervigilance, anxiety, insomnia, and more—for survivors to combat soldiers to the everyday person. Weaving hard science with moving human stories, The Invisible Machine reveals how this treatment was developed. It also tells the incredible story of the unlikely team, including the doctor, an artist, Special Forces leadership, and a sheriff, who are working together to change our understanding of post-traumatic stress and why it matters to society. Coauthored by artist and innovator Jamie Mustard and in collaboration with writer Holly Lorincz, The Invisible Machine weaves hard science with moving stories of warriors, prisoners, and ordinary people to provide a stark new understanding of the human condition. The implications for a better, pain-free world are astounding—and that world could be nearer than we think.

New York Times best-selling author Dr. Mike Dow and Ronan Levy, founder of Field Trip, the world's largest provider of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies, offer ways to integrate ketamine into treatment for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. It's been described as the most important breakthrough in mental health since the introduction of Prozac in 1986. And though once considered taboo, the psychedelic compound, ketamine, is experiencing a spectacular therapeutic comeback. When combined with psychotherapy, ketamine, which has been described as the being possibly the “most important breakthrough in antidepressant treatment in decades,” has the potential to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other debilitating mental illnesses—and change lives.Unlike antidepressants, which merely mask the pain, psychedelics that heal the brain are the future. Instead of putting Band-Aids on the brain, with Ketamine Assisted-Psychotherapy, you can actually repair the neurological damage caused by stress, anxiety, neglect, and abuse. In this book, best-selling author Dr. Mike Dow and Field Trip co-founder Ronan Levy provide a broad overview of where KAP came from, how it works, who it works for, and what to expect. More importantly, The Ketamine Breakthrough gives specific protocols for both practitioners and patients to follow in their work with KAP.This book contains hope for those diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression, plagued by trauma and frozen by fears. Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy has also proven effective for people with drug, alcohol, and behavioral addictions, existential depression, grief, and just feeling stuck. People with unresolved resentments, anger, and the everyday anxieties of modern life will also benefit. Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy has been enormously helpful with couples, groups, and veterans, which will be addressed in the book as well. This is the go-to manual for therapists and anyone who wants to learn more about Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy. For those undergoing this revolutionary protocol, it includes a session-by-session Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Workbook to enhance and deepen the treatment.

- Abstract
First published in 1997. Although the fields of thanatology and traumatology have received robust attention during their parallel development, little effort has been made to address their overlapping territory. This volume is the first attempt to do so. Specifically, the purpose of this book is fourfold. First is to provide a theoretical bridge between the two fields by providing conceptual terminology, such as defining normal versus dysfunctional bereavement and the meaning and range of death-related PTSD. The second confirms and illustrates the identical patterns of reactions between those who survive the death of a loved one and those who survive other traumatic events. Next the book applies the most useful theoretical models to the bereavement experience, and in turn acknowledges the utility of generalizing bereavement models to other traumatic experiences; in doing so, the two fields can enrich each other. Similarly, the volume's final purpose is to identify and apply the most useful and effective approaches in traumatology literature to the study, diagnosis and treatment of traumatic stressors other than death.

Trauma and the exposure to traumatic events is part of life, making the need for current and informed social work research and training in this area essential. Trauma, Spirituality, and Posttraumatic Growth in Clinical Social Work Practice highlights unique and diverse circumstances throughout a client's lifecycle where trauma is experienced, how one's spirituality is awakened or activated, and how this experience can intersect with interventions toward posttraumatic growth (PTG). More than just a primer on trauma effects, the book offers social workers insights into how to properly assess current resources and individual levels of distress. It also provides practical strategies on how spirituality and spiritual practices can be integrated into psychotherapeutic interventions at various levels of social work practice. Addressing the impact of trauma-related events and emphasizing the importance of spirituality, the book will inspire and provide transferable knowledge that social workers can use to meet the unique needs of the clients, families, and communities they serve.

- Abstract
Experiences of violence, sexual abuse, accidents, disasters or deaths of close relatives or friends, and other extreme situations can lead to trauma-related disorders. Since 2018, the World Health Organization has distinguished four such disorders in its classification list:'classic'and complex post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as prolonged grief disorder and adjustment disorder. These long-term effects are described in detail in the book. In recent years, a variety of interventions have been developed to effectively treat these disorders. This 5th edition has been largely reorganized due to the groundbreaking innovations in which the editor played a decisive role on an international level. Among the innovations are the chapters on: - Complex post-traumatic stress disorder - Childhood violence and its consequences - Low-threshold and innovative interventions - Methods of cognitivebehavioral therapy - Psychodynamic approaches The handbook on psychological trauma-related disorders.

- Abstract
The experience of traumatic events is a near-universal, albeit unfortunate, part of the human experience. Given how many individuals are exposed to trauma, it is interesting to question why some individuals are resilient in the face of trauma while others go on to develop chronic post-traumatic stress. Throughout the relatively brief history of the psychological study of trauma, a number of themes have consistently emerged; many of these themes remain essential elements within our current study of traumatic stress disorders, as summarized within this volume. The Oxford Handbook of Traumatic Stress Disorders addresses the current landscape of research and clinical knowledge surrounding traumatic stress disorders. Bringing together a group of highly-regarded experts, this volume is divided into six sections, together summarizing the current state of knowledge about 1) classification and phenomenology, 2) epidemiology and special populations, 3) contributions from theory, 4) assessment, 5) prevention and early intervention efforts, and 6) treatment of individuals with post-trauma mental health symptoms. Throughout the volume, attention is paid to identifying current controversies in the literature and highlighting directions that hold promise for future work. In this new second edition, experts on traumatic stress contribute chapters on topics spanning classification, epidemiology and special populations, theory, assessment, prevention/early intervention, treatment, and dissemination and treatment. This expanded, updated volume provides research updates and highlights areas that need continued clarification through additional research. With new chapters on adverse childhood experiences, suicide following the experience of trauma, and evidence-based treatments, the second edition provides an up-to-date and valuable resource for clinicians and investigators with interest in traumatic stress disorders.

- Abstract
The second, completely updated edition of this book offers an evidence based guide for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists and other clinicians working with trauma survivors in various settings. It provides easily digestible, up-to-date information on the basic principles of traumatic stress research and practice, including psychological and sociological theories as well as epidemiological, psychopathological, and neurobiological findings. However, as therapists are primarily interested in how to best treat their traumatized patients, the core focus of the book is on evidence based psychological treatments for trauma-related mental disorders. The full range of trauma and stress related disorders is covered, including Acute Stress Reaction, Complex PTSD and Prolonged Grief Disorder, reflecting important anticipated developments in diagnostic classification. Each of the treatment chapters begins with a short summary of the theoretical underpinnings of the approach, presents a case illustrating the treatment protocol, addresses special challenges typically encountered in implementing this treatment, and ends with an overview of related outcomes and other research findings. Additional chapters are devoted to the treatment of comorbidities, special populations and special treatment modalities and to pharmacological treatments for trauma-related disorders. A novel addition is the chapter on Innovative interventions to increase global mental health. The book concludes by addressing the fundamental question of how to treat whom, and when.

- Abstract
This accessible, evidence-based book provides readers with a practical framework to understand, formulate, and treat PTSD using the cognitive model while creatively adapting for complexity.Cognitive therapy for PTSD is a highly effective treatment, but aspects of clinical complexity can complicate treatment and limit its effectiveness. Trauma memories themselves can be complex, the associated meanings can resist change and people may struggle to engage with them without feeling overwhelmed. Problems that commonly arise alongside PTSD add to clinical complexity, such as comorbid psychological or physical disorders, social problems, and ongoing risks. Bringing together the science and art of therapy, this book demonstrates how to approach these issues by holding firm to the principles of CBT, whilst flexing and creatively adapting techniques for each unique circumstance. Rich case studies, top tips, and frequently asked questions are used throughout to demonstrate the approach.Written by clinicians for clinicians, the book synthesizes the latest research into a practical treatment manual to help readers overcome obstacles in PTSD treatment and ‘supercharge'their therapy skills.

- Abstract
For those who have experienced trauma, life may sometimes feel hopeless, full of feeling too much or too little, and the world can feel like a terrifying and dangerous place. This can be especially true for those hurt by people they loved, trusted, or relied on. To escape the pain, many trauma survivors disconnect from themselves and the world, including in ways that are risky or unsafe. The good news is that survivors can heal, recover from trauma, and grow. The Finding Solid Ground Program Workbook is an invaluable guide through this important, meaningful work, providing a step-by-step approach at a pace designed to feel safe. In this workbook, which can be used independently or in the context of psychotherapy, expert authors guide readers step by step along the path of healing from trauma, and offer specific exercises to practice daily that will help survivors feel safer and develop a grounded, worthy sense of self. This book includes the Information Sheets and Exercises that are the foundation for the Finding Solid Ground program; the companion book for therapists, Finding Solid Ground: Overcoming Obstacles in Trauma Treatment provides the theoretical, clinical, and research rationale for the program. Therapists will find that this program breaks recovery into practical and manageable steps that can be immediately implemented. Participation in the Finding Solid Ground program in the TOP DD Network study was linked with improved ability to manage emotions in healthy ways and reduced dissociation, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and self-injury.

Even seasoned clinicians can struggle when trying to help to highly traumatized and dissociative patients. This book and its accompanying workbook for patients provide an evidence-informed, pragmatic, and compassionate approach to the stabilization and treatment of complex trauma and dissociation. These books will help clinicians immediately begin assessment and treatment with traumatized individuals using a comprehensive therapeutic program that includes session-by-session information sheets and exercises developed through decades of clinical experience, studies, and feedback from individuals living with trauma-related disorders. Finding Solid Ground: Overcoming Obstacles in Trauma Treatment offers guidance on how to use the program in individual and group contexts, expert recommendations for assessing dissociation, and clinical vignettes that focus on how to overcome common challenges in trauma treatment. The companion workbook includes the patient-facing Information Sheets and Exercises that are the foundation of the Finding Solid Ground program. - Abstract
For decades, his family rescued lost and forgotten donkeys in the Irish countryside. He had no idea that one day, the donkeys would rescue him.Patrick Barrett grew up on the back of a donkey. In the small village of Liscarroll, the young boy helped his family run a sanctuary for abandoned and abused donkeys. Struggling in school, Patrick only felt truly accepted in the presence of these funny, fuzzy, touching animals. It was like magic, how he and the donkeys understood each other. He became a true “donkey whisperer”—reading their body language, communicating with them in ways they could understand, and teaching himself how to “speak” in their distinctive calls. But when Patrick was of age, he shipped out with the Irish Army and encountered unimaginable wartime horrors in Lebanon and Kosovo. In the aftermath, he returned home a broken man, sinking into the depths of PTSD and addictions. He believed nothing could save him. But he hadn't counted on the donkeys.Sanctuary is the remarkable true story of how faith turned one lost man's life around with the help of the rescue animals who loved him. It's an antidote to despair and a call to hope, revealing the beauty and wonder of Ireland as you've never seen it before.

- Abstract

A road map for dismantling the fear and shame that keep you from living a free and authentic life.In the aftermath of stress, disappointment, and trauma, people often fall into survival mode, even while a part of them longs for more. Juggling multiple demands and responsibilities keeps them busy, but not healed. As a survivor of sexual assault, racism, and evacuation from a civil war in Liberia, Dr. Thema Bryant knows intimately the work involved in healing. Having made the journey herself, in addition to guiding others as a clinical psychologist and ordained minister, Dr. Thema shows you how to reconnect with your authentic self and reclaim your time, your voice, your life. Signs of disconnection from self can take many forms, including people-pleasing, depression, anxiety, and resentment. Healing starts with recognizing and expressing emotions in an honest way and reconnecting with the neglected parts of yourself, but it can't be done in a vacuum. Dr. Thema gives you the tools to meaningfully connect with your larger community, even if you face racism and sexism, heartbreak, grief, and trauma. Rather than shrinking in the face of life's difficulties, you will discover in Homecoming the therapeutic approaches and spiritual practices to live a more expansive life characterized by empowerment, healthier relationships, gratitude, and a deeper sense of purpose.
